This is a sad review for me. The last time we will ever dine at this fine establishment. When I found out it was closing I was extremely upset. This became a place that was a regular rotation for me. From taking visitors from out of town, reuniting with my friends here, spending Sundays watching Bills football, even if they aren't my team, or introducing this place to my partner in crime after our first Fridays after 5 together. It will always hold a special place in my heart. I'll miss the magical Mac & Cheese, the fantastic beer selection, and the vaulted ceilings that made the whole place loud as hell. Came here on Friday July 4th mid day and it was pretty empty. It got busier after 5pm. This place has a variety of IPAs and draft beers. The fried pickles were salty and hot. Be sure to come check this place out! read more

Pretty much same experience as last time except I wouldn't say the staff is rude, more they are just understaffed. Our server was really nice and the bartenders are typically nice too. We sat as a table of 5 and it took over an hour for brunch to come out. The wait was just kinda ridiculous. No manager stopped by to say anything.. That being said the food was decent. Their shrimp lemon orzo is amazing. Not sure I'd be back for brunch but it's a solid spot downtown if you're in the area. Lots of beer selections obviously. read more

We came here for a Friday night, wedding weekend activity, so a bunch of friends and family of the bride were present. I love the idea of having everyone that came in from out of town have a place to get together to see the couple/family in a less serious environment, to be able to relax and enjoy each other ahead of the big day. South Street Brewery was the perfect spot for this! Everyone was able to order however much or little they wanted. The menu is vast! They do flights, so we decided to just get 2 flights to be able to try the entire menu! The NE IPAs were my favorite and the pilsners were his. We also had some wings which were very yummy! It's in a great location with lots of other shops and restaurants around. This was nice and close to our downtown hotel, which was especially grand considering they wouldn't let us check in. It was a quick walk across the railroad tracks and we were told to sit anywhere we wanted. We picked a booth. I gotta say I'm not a fan of the bar code/phone thing to look at a menu, but no big deal. Then it was off to the counter (end of the bar) to order. Note: they did have menus up there. Loved that they had a local chardonnay from Dave Matthews winery. Husband found an Amber he liked. I carried our drinks to the table and the guy was nice enough to bring my water and silverware. Both our burgers were terrific! I got the single Hangover burger, which was plenty big enough with the addition of the egg. It was perfectly seasoned and balanced flavors. Husband loved his double. Almost every time we are in the Charlottesville area, we will swing by South Street. Their beer is on point, especially Satan pony, a long time favorite. The food is really good. I had the jumbo pretzel and it truly was jumbo. Very soft and great taste. My friend got the Steak Frites and for 22 bucks its a steal! Was able to walk in at 6 pm on Sat and pick out table. It did get busier and there were a few folks waiting for tables as we left around 7. Typical pub atmosphere. Was a little dark for me and a little cool. Service is a little strange. We have to order everything at the bar. They hand you single beers and bring flights, drinks, and food to your table. Flights were also a little strange. You have a choose of six on the left side of the menu (lighter), six on the right side (darker), or all 12. There is no picking and choosing. I went with a right side flight since I like darker beers. Beers were good. Elderberry mule was also good. Food was okay. Sandwiches were good but the fries and tots were very greasy. Also seems like a small portion of tots for the price. All in all, I'd go again, just know what to expect. read more

Stopped in for a quick bite and was pleasantly surprised to find out this is a Buffalo Bills bar (former upstate NY resident here). Love the Bills gear all over the restaurant. To order, you scan the QR code to view the menu and then order via the bar. Our food came out quickly and our food runner was kind. Had to try the Beef on Weck - it was pretty good. The beers are delicious - I often hear that Satan's Pony is a favorite of many. Parking was a little hard to find but there are plenty pay to park lots or if you are lucky, two hour spots available a block or two away. read more

Decent place to grab a beer and bite to eat if you're Downtown Mall. This brewery/restaurant has a pretty welcoming atmosphere with tons of tables, a bar area, and a mini lounge with couches and board games to play. If you decide to sit at the couch like we did, you need to place your order at the bar and your food will be brought to you. From the beers on draft (about a dozen), I decided on the Water Street Wheat. Went down pretty smooth and was pretty light. Also tried some of the shrimp from their Shrimp Basket. The shrimp were fairly large and I liked how they were not overly breaded. Fries were standard, but I did enjoy the jalapeno-corn coleslaw. The beers were very good. We liked that you can get a full pour or a small sample (about 2oz) to try several. All were well brewed and enjoyable...we tried 6. They also do flights but you can only choose from one side of the chalkboard per flight, unless you get a giant flight of all the beers. The building has plenty of seating at tables, booths, and at the bar. Old building ambience with wood beams, lots of brick, and I'm sure a lot of history. Our server was very nice and checked on us regularly. We were there for lunch and it wasn't too busy. We loved our ginger-miso-glazed salmon quinoa bowls. There was more lettuce (spring mix) than quinoa, I did not mind but hubby was expecting more quinoa and less lettuce. Still, a very good dish and I'd order it again. The onion rings were top notch. Seasonal veggie of the day was Brussels sprouts. These were not the crispy yummy ones I'd hoped for. They had a seasoning but were either steamed or boiled, I can't be sure, but they were warm and soft. This is the type of Brussels sprouts that give them a bad name in the eyes of many. Also they had a bit of an ammonia type smell/taste which I'm guessing means they are a bit old? The onion rings more than made up for the Brussels sprouts. Our server was amazing! But the food was not so great. The burger came out medium well instead of medium rare, and the tots were really salty. The Reuben was not bad but it was so greasy it left oil on the plate. The fries were dark brown, almost burnt, and the kitchen allowed this to be served. The beer was run-of-the-mill. Cool spot worth a stop, especially you Satan's Pony fans! We came to South Street for a flight and a quick lunch. I really loved the quick service, and the food had massive portions. We got the cheese curds to share, which were really nicely coated and a great snack. We also ordered the "Breakfast for Dinner" - egg biscuit available any time of day! That was a great menu hack and I loved the sandwich. The table also loved the wonton nachos and the fish and chips, both of which could easily be shared. I was underwhelmed by the beer selection. Of course we had both the classic Satan's Pony and the Imperial Satan's Pony on the flight, but there were only a couple other standouts. When I return, I'll likely get just one beer instead of the whole fight to sample. read more

For the flights, you can only order on one side of the menu or the other; you cannot mix and match; The interior is a pretty extensive area with a bar, booths, 2-6 seater tables, a fireplace, and seats by large windows. They have paid parking across the street. We ordered at the bar, and they brought it to the table. Music was playing, but thankfully not loud. The mango margarita is strong but excellent!; imperial satan's pony was my husband's favorite beer; He said there was an odd metallic taste for the Aisling stout. Ambience is warm with a fire in the fireplace but the reduced staff at least at lunch meant it lacked the human touch. We were disappointed that they no longer use grass fed beef for their burgers. They've done a great job changing how they operate during COVID - the process is definitely requiring more effort from the staff there - they hustle and work so hard to get their jobs done. They sanitize, they wipe down menus and pens, they do so much....and the are still so friendly. If you've worked in the service industry, you know how hard it is in "normal" times. Cue the pandemic and try serving guests, sanitizing, policing distancing, all while wearing a mask, etc...and not losing your mind. Well, they've seemed to master it! Maybe all that great beer helps! They offer beer flights so we tried 7 beers on the menu - they were all solid offerings. I enjoyed them all. I ended up settling in with the gourd - a chocolate pumpkin imperial ale (yum). My boyfriend went with Satans Pony - an Amber ale which he really liked. We actually made this place a destination after having lunch at the Blue Wing Frog because we tried Satans Pony there. We enjoyed the boneless wings too - huge portion and so tasty! They have a lot of beers to choose from. I'd recommend sipping through a flight to find which beer you enjoy most and then hanging out to enjoy. We left after 2 beers to see what else was around the area. Wish we would have stayed !! We just didn't find any other place in the general area with great beer selections and that was as inviting. We really enjoyed our experience at South Street Brewery for our friend's rehearsal dinner party! To our surprise there is a full bar in addition to their extensive craft beer offerings, they even offer a small selection of wine. The food prepared was excellent! Our dishes were well seasoned and everything on the plate had a purpose. The goat cheese pasta with chicken was really well prepared and had a generous portion of fresh vegetables. Most pasta dishes highlight the pasta and sauce over the fresh vegetables, this dish was a great marriage of all ingredients. For beverages, we really enjoyed our variation on "The Last Word" cocktail which was made substituting the Green Chartreuse (French Liqueur) for St. Germain (Elderflower Liqueur) and using Casamigos Mezcal instead of Gin. Awesome spot for events with friendly staff, a great Floorplan and a solid AV (audio/video) system for any sort of social/corporate function. read more

Amazing stop for drinks before dinner! They had a lot of fun brews on the menu. I was in the mood for something light and refreshing and found a lot of fruity options. Our little group went to South Street Brewery after a nice hike in Shenandoah! It was easy to get to off of 64, and had a lot of parking close by. It was relatively busy, but there was enough room for us to grab a table. The space was well lit with large windows. As a guest you had to order at the bar and the food was delivered to your table. We ordered the chili tatchos to start off. They were delicious! We ate every last bite. For dinner, I had the fish fry. It was a battered haddock with fries, coleslaw, and tarter sauce. It melted in my mouth. It is definitely something I will be craving in the future. My husband and friend liked the beer! read more

Our experience for our first time visiting here from out of town was an awesome one. The food came out hot and fresh. The beer selection they had was great, especially with their stout/darker beer selection-- which did not disappoint. Had the Anastasias chocolate fantasy beer which tasted great and bartender recommended. The staff overall were pretty friendly and attentive as well. The place overall was nice. Plenty of seating and they also had games you could play, which we enjoyed a game while eating our food and drinks. The parking situation was different than we were used too compared to our hometown but it wasn't too bad! The parking lots next to the brewery can be a little tight when parking!
