This hole-in-the-wall ice cream window has been recommended to me many a times over the past few years. With the big NJ heatwave, I thought it best to give it a try now. The parking is inconspicuous and in the back shop. Make sure you dont miss it and turn into the realtor parking nextdoor. While they do have a shop, their actual store front was closed, which was a huge disappointment as we were trying to hide from the heat, but there are benches in the front of the store facing the street for some immediate seating options. The servers are your typical friendly-enough highschool/college-aged workers. They were sure to answer any questions I had and provided a requested sample, but I felt a bit disconnected and shut out from the screens and doors they are behind while you are trying to ask them questions. I get it may just be a cost-saving measure with the AC, but it made the whole interaction a bit sketchy to be honest. Oh well, all that comes with a hole-in-the-wall joint! In our urgency to escape the heat, we ended up downing the ice cream before I got pics~ I got the chocolate chip cookie dough and caramel cold brew, which was an AMAZING combo with chocolate chips in both ice cream flavors, and generous heaps of cookie dough. My friend got the cinnamon churro, and chocolate and peanut butter swirl, and he highly recommended the peanut butter swirl! Overall, they have some delicious and plentiful ice creams and they are generous with the portions here. If you are stopping by for a summer evening, I do believe its worth a try. read more

Let me start by saying that I love that they have infant sized cups. So thoughtful for parents. Had a traditional soft serve ice cream with sprinkles. And my husband had a peach flavored ice cream. We both weren't fans. Not sure how they make their soft serve but it was so thin. It was like the texture of cool whip. It was a little off putting. Although the service was friendly & efficient I was disappointed that Milltown Ice Cream does not serve homemade ice cream, instead there's a large menu of selections from Jack and Jill. This is more of a commercial brand rather than homemade and just does not have that creamy richness to it. We ordered from the window at the side of the building. There are a few seats on the front and some picnic tables behind the parking lot in the back. I think the picnic tables belong to the adjacent park. Ice cream is good but not homemade it's Jack and Jill. The place is filthy, it turns your stomach to eat your ice cream there. The benches and side walk is crusted thick with ice cream and syrup. They really should invest in a power washer and clean it everyday. It's very unsanitary. read more

You can find unique flavors here and they serve generous scoops of delicious ice cream at very reasonable prices. My personal favorite is the peanut butter ripple! The ice cream isn't too overly sweet either which I appreciate. They definitely don't skimp on the scoop sizes and the baby/small scoop (1 scoop/1.5 scoops) would be more than enough for most people! There was a line on a weeknight, with the wait around 10-15 minutes, which is typical when the weather warms up. There were only two employees working the shop. Been coming here for years and it's still a great place to come for ice cream. However, last time I went there was no line and portions are significantly smaller than what they use to be. They are still cash only and prices have definitely increased. Still tons of flavors to choose from, a lot of reduced fat no sugar options. They also have Italian ice and froyo. Very good Ice Cream, my family loves coming here. Our only issue is the line. It doesnt matter if there is 5 people in front of you or 15, the wait is at least 30 minutes. There's two windows to serve customers but they're not as efficient as other ice cream places. The staff is very nice and friendly though, They do their best, I just wish there was a way to speed the line up. Especially nowadays where time is of the essence, people have things to do and people to see and can't spend an hr just to get ice cream. One of the best Ice cream places I know. They recently just changed locations to a shop. The shop can only hold a couple of groups of people and there is only about 3 or 4 tables inside for people to sit at. The parking is behind their store. This was the go to hang out place for me and my friend's during our college summers, and for good reason! Awesome prices and awesome ice cream. Food: There are so many flavors that you can choose that you will most likely find something that you would enjoy. I usually get Mint Chocolate Chip and/or Strawberry Cheesecake. The flavors I get usually aren't too sugary and are pretty unique. Environment/Service: They used to be near the Milltown train tracks, but they recently moved across the street to an indoor building. The inside seating is a little limited, but there's also spots in front you can sit and a park behind the building for when the weather is nicer. The servers are all really nice and friendly with helping you pick out flavors. Price: This is where this place really shines. For three dollars, you get a monstrous serving of ice cream. I haven't been to anywhere else that gives you this much ice cream for this low of a price. A small, easy-to-miss, hidden gem of an ice cream shop in this area. Milltown Ice Cream Depot has a very basic white exterior and interior, but makes up for it with their fantastic ice cream. Though I am not a fan of it being cash-only and the very limited seating both inside and outside the shop, I cannot give enough love to this place. I'm so used to the crazy prices of Cold Stone and The Bent Spoon with such small servings that the serving sizes you get here for only $3-4 is a breath of fresh air. Though the Baby and Small sizes are only 1 and 1.5 scoops respectively, the staff are very generous with the sizes of these scoops. Most people will be satisfied with just the Baby size. Besides the sizes of the scoops, the ice cream itself really kills the game. All flavors I have tried are super creamy and do not melt rapidly. You'll be content with being basic for Chocolate or being adventurous with trying Moose Tracks (Vanilla with Chocolate Swirl and PB Cups). I enjoy the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough flavor a lot as there are plenty of cookie dough pieces within the massive scoops. My other go-to flavors are Moose Tracks and Sweet & Salty Caramel Pretzel. I underestimated the size of Small last time, which took me a whiiiiile to finish, so I'd stick to Baby size usually. Lines can get crazy when the weather warms up, even with the window for an outside line in addition to the inside cash register. Over the summer, I've waited at least 10 - 15 minutes. However, it's honestly worth waiting for this ice cream. Sure you could go to another chain where you pay $5.00 or more for a hella small scoop, but waiting for and eating this creamy delicacy on a beautiful summer day while chilling with friends seriously hits differently. Blown away by the amazing birthday cake Milltown Ice Cream Depot made for my daughter's birthday. The only thing I asked for was a unicorn cake that a 6 year old girl would like- and when I saw their creation, my jaw dropped. It was SO much better than I expected. Milltown Ice Cream Depot is a must-do during the summer. I'm not a huge soft-serve fan, am kind of over the fro-yo craze, and really just appreciate an ice cream shack that will serve me an old fashioned cone with a hard scoop of cookie dough (my fave). The depot does exactly that, and they do it flawlessly. They've got a pretty wide selection of ice cream and topping flavors to choose from. I'm a creature of habit and only ever order cookie dough or pumpkin. They actually also serve pumpkin all year round which is rare to find, but exciting for all pumpkin lovers like myself. The ice cream isn't homemade unfortunately, but it's still pretty damn tasty and very underpriced. You get so much bang for your buck that even a small is too big for me. I normally go with the baby which comes with a huge scoop for 2.50. A small is 3.50 and comes with at least double the amount. If you're looking for an ice cream fix with a quaint small town feel then the depot is definitely worth a visit. Delicious ice cream at a good price. The "baby" is 3 bucks and plenty generous. What a refreshing change from a lot of overpriced ice creameries, especially in the city. The pistachio icecream was the best ice cream I've had in a long time. Not too sweet and full of pistachio flavor. The crunchy pistachio nuts in it enhanced the experience. They were delicious and not stale. Other good flavors I tried were the cookies and cream though it was a bit too sweet and the strawberry soft serve, which was really creamy and delicious. Probably my 2nd favorite here behind the pistachio. There was a big line to get ice cream with only 2 cashiers but it moved. We waited maybe 10 minutes. The stand area was full of little gnats and that was my one complaint. I think the people working could obviously see the issue but nobody cleaned it up. I took a couple napkins and wiped away maybe 15 bugs to make the atmosphere a little better. Also I didn't want those bugs flying into my precious ice cream. We are with Milltown Ice Cream Depot for about five years now and what can I say?- these guys never disappoint with their great variety of flavors, overload of richness of the ice-cream they sell and always friendly atmosphere and smiles (those are always free but SO valuable) Expresso Chip has those amazing chips inside of a real chocolate and Green Tea are our all time favorites but I'm sure I'll find smth that pleases you taste buds.
