I have not needed to see Dr. Chwu for about seven years but when I required another root canal I absolutely wanted to return to him. Omg, all the reviews are true. I went to Dr. Chwu with a pain I've had for weeks and with a lot of fear of getting a "root canal". Especially being referred, I've never had prior contact with Dr Chwu until my procedure day. So there was definitely some initial doubts. However, from the moment he answered the phone to the moment he greeted me at his office, he was nothing but an angel. I must say it's one thing if a dentist is nice and can't really do a good job but Dr. Chwu is just perfect and definitely a pro at what he does! I mean he's only done root canals for 20 something years.. But Wow, thank you so so much for making me feel so comfortable during such a fearful procedure. I had a tooth infection and needed a root canal in an upper front tooth. After decades of going to dentists, for me the worst pain of this procedure is the initial injection of to numb the area. Dr. Chwu, made this with less pain and discomfort by injecting the drug in very short multiple shots. This took a little more time, but was worth it. By the last shot everything was painless. More dentists should adopt this technique. read more

Dr. Chwu (pronounced "Chu") is a fantastic endodontist. He is very friendly and even takes the time to explain the different steps in the procedures while performing them. I was a bit unsure about choosing Dr. Chwu because I could not find any reviews or information about him, but I decided to visit him for a consultation. The consultation fee was $80 and applied towards the final procedure. Turns out Dr. Chwu is UCLA trained and even teaches in the field. The best thing about Dr. Chwu other than his bedside manner is his pricing. I called several endodontists in the area and they were all about $500 to $1,000 more expensive for the same treatment and their consultation fees were also inflated. Found this specialist on Yelp & took the word of the few awesome reviews. This Doctor is wonderful! He was very straight forward & had a fresh sense of humor. It almost makes me want to return to have a cup of tea with him & the staff. Every step of the procedure was explained to me before beginning, so I was at ease the entire time. When the other reviewers say they didn't feel any pain, they really meant they didn't feel a thing. It was as though I had my mouth hanging open for no reason because he was so gentle it seemed his hands or instruments never went near my face. All the dental work was done with magic. I visited his office for a root canal consultation ($80). I was referred to him by my dentist. Dr. Chwu is one of the honest dentists I have found. He gave me a straight opinion. In my case, he said my best chance was to see a specialist (Periodontist) rather than have him do the root canal procedure. He could have worked on me and not succeeded. I was referred to Dr. Chwu, a root canal specialist, by my dentist. This was my first root canal, so I didn't know what to expect. I just imagined it being a long, painful surgery. But, lucky for me, Dr. Chwu turned out to be highly skilled at his profession. He easily explained the procedure and that put me at ease. I was amazed at how quick & efficient he worked. Both him & his assistant were finely tuned & synchronized. When he said he was done, I couldn't believe it. He uses a microscope and has some pretty fancy tools of the trade. The office is comfortable & air conditioned. To my relief, the whole procedure was entirely painless. I was soo happy. This damn toothache rocked me. I went to Dr. Chwu for what I thought would be a root canal, as he was highly recommended. I have never had a root canal and was a bit reluctant about the whole thing. I must have called the office 8 times or more before my appointment with questions about the procedure, the equipment they have etc. Each time I was given detailed responses with respect and understanding and thorough explanations. Dr. Chwu is very confident and very thorough in his discourse without being arrogant and while giving you the options as well as the pros and cons of each. I really appreciated this. I did not feel pressured and felt he wanted me to understand my options. He spent a good amount of time with me discussing everything and in the end, we decided he would refer me to an oral surgeon to discuss non-root canal options. The office is very clean and the support staff are pleasant and accommodating. He is great chairside which instantly put me at ease. He has a wonderful personality which I found very refreshing. I highly recommend this place because of Dr. Chwu's honesty, cleanliness, fair price, and nice office staff. I left his office feeling he wanted the best for me even if it meant he would not be billing for a procedure that day. I love this guy! Nobody likes root canals but if you had to have one, Dr. Chwu is the go to. I have had 2 before and this one was the quickest, most desirable experience of all. Dr. Chwu explains everything to you on your first visit and as things are happening when they are happening in your mouth. I have to be honest, I felt very relaxed through the whole experience. In at 1:15, out by 3:15 or sooner. The next morning I felt like there was an electrical storm in my mouth so I messaged Dr. Chwu who called me within 15 minutes to explain all of the things that I was feeling was normal and not to worry. If I didn't feel better in a couple days to let him know. That's all I really needed to know is that what I was feeling was normal. I don't remember having any of that kind of feeling after the other two root canals but every one is different. Right now less than 48 hours after my BIG day and I feel pretty good! Still tender but what would you expect when they must dig a ditch around the "bad tooth" to work on it? This doctor has a great sense of humor and tells it the way it is. I had two root canals done with Dr. Chwu. In both occasions, I waited until the pain were unbearable before I checked in with Dr. Chwu. Twice. He squeezed me in on his tight schedules and did the root canal operations. The best thing was both operations did not hurt at all. Dr. Chwu is, hands down, the most talented dental professional I've ever had the good fortune to have work on my teeth. I was referred by my dentist for a root canal. The first time I went in, Dr. Chwu drilled and cleaned out my tooth. He explained everything that was happening, took breaks to talk to me and show me what was going on, and made me feel safe and respected. He is deft and confident and artistic. I know that "artistic" isn't a natural word to use for an endodontist, but it fits Dr. Chwu. He uses his myriad little files like a sculptor. It's really impressive. He has also taught endodontics at UCLA. When I came in for the second appointment he told me that, unfortunately, the tooth had cracked and would have to be extracted. Since I'd already paid him for the root canal, he rewrote the claim as an "emergency visit" and sent me a refund of the difference promptly, so not only is he highly skilled, but he's honest as well. He is also a master with the anesthesia. I had only local shots for this procedure and not only did I not feel any pain (or any anything, for that matter) while he was working on me, he managed to inject the anesthetic into my nerves without the injections even hurting. While we were waiting for the anesthetic to take effect he sat and talked to me about all kinds of things. The guy is charismatic, interesting, and funny as hell to talk to. Feb, 18, 2015 had appt with Dr. Chwu due to a problem with a lower tooth. Dr. Chwu was extremely pleasant and so was his staff. Very kind gentleman asked me about the tooth I was having a problem with and explained he needed to take some pictures of my tooth once that was complete he found that I had an infection and that I needed a root canal. Asked when I would need to come back and he said he was ready now if I was. It would take couple of hours so I said lets do it. He explained every little detail that he was going to do which made me feel good know what was going to happen. I normally dread going to see the dentist, but Dr. Chwu makes going to the dentist seem easy and (dare I say it) almost fun. Not only is he very professional, but he also has a very easygoing personality. I had my consultation about a month ago and he was very honest and transparent about what work I needed to get done. I went in just last week to get two root canals done and I never thought a dental procedure could be so painless! The procedure was done both quickly and thoroughly and he made sure that every last bit of my choppers was cleaned out properly. He explained the entire process step by step and even let me examine my incisor pulp upon request (sorry if that grossed you out).
