I almost didn't write this review because I am selfish and want to keep Mingle to myself... My husband's friend recommended Mingle, so I made a reservation on their website (very easy, they even send you reminders before your appointment which was helpful.) Yuriwas my stylist and she started off my appointment asking what I was looking for- I explained that my hair felt really heavy and that I wanted to get a nice crisp/clean haircut, but was still easy to maintain because I hate spending time on my hair, especially blow drying it. With my awful, vague explanation of my expectations, Yuri WORKED MAGIC, Y'ALL. First, she washed my hair (is it just me, or is this the best part of a haircut?) and then sat me down in the chair- clip clip clip and there was a storm of hair falling around me. And just like that- she made my request into a reality! At the end, she even asked if she should trim anything else- I really appreciated the gesture because it shows she wants me to be fully satisfied with the cut. She was amazing. My second review for this wonderful salon. You can't go wrong coming here. I have been with Saori Abe for over a year now. She does a phenomenal job every time. She works to ensure you get done only what is correct for you. I kept hemming and hawing over bangs and for a while she talked me off the ledge. Sunday I showed her a different type of bang and we went for it...perfectly executed and I'm beyond happy. She has restored my hair health, helped me gain length, and made me look so much better. Highly recommend getting your hair cut/styled here! Really enjoy the service of all the staff. As for current times during the pandemic, they have taken a number of precautionary measures. They require everyone to wear a mask, take your temperature when you enter, have hand sanitizer, disinfect the seats/hair cutting stations, have space between each client, and for shampoo and conditioning have a shower curtain up between each seat. Definitely felt safe while I was there! I've had Tao cut my hair twice - once in December and again today! My hair badly needed TLC and to get thinned out and shortened in this humidity. Tao was very attentive to my hair and helpful with giving me suggestions on what style of hair I should get. I'm a low maintenance type of girl so really appreciated her input. My hair is also slightly frizzy so appreciated tips she gave me back in December on how to have sleeker looking hair. I think they have promo pricing going on right now. I agree with the negative comments on the receptionist. She is rude, as a Japanese I really sorry about it. She speaks English and Japanese well but looks down on the customers who don't have a lot of money. My experience was good when the stylist finished her work. The stylist is good. However, at the reception, I paid, but after that, she forced me to pay tips. My first offer is too small, I agreed. However, I did not have enough money to begin work after finishing school, so I moved to NYC to start work and had 3 dollars for tips. I offered it, but she refused, this shop set $55 so, 10% is the minimum to 20% or 25 %, the credit card is acceptable, so I requested 10%, but she deducted $11 from my credit card without saying anything. And ordered me to pay directly to the stylist with physical money by picking up physical money from the register. It was odd! My friends in NYC told me that tips are just showing thankfulness if you don't have 10% to 20%, lower than 10% is OK, and you can pass on to the staff what you have, and what you want to pay. The receptionist might think that I was a beginner Japanese in NYC or look down on me; she might thought she taught American rule to Japanese. My honest comment is that she forced customers her (or the salon's) tip rule. I will try back to former salons (JKU etc. ) that accepted my irregular tips. Sometimes I have money, sometimes not, I pay a lot for tips but sometimes not that is my life, so far. I hope I always have a lot of money and decide to do so. Therefore, I accept small tips from unaffordable customers when I am a seller. I noticed that some Japanese in the US tend to be fixed rules, and are not flexible. Trying to introduce that is the US rule, but Americans say there is no rigid rule. Rules are alive. Regarding tips, if a customer offers 10% for beauty service, it is appreciated. But the receptionist forced a customer to pay more without saying anything when she deducted money from my card. My American friend says it is a terrible story. According to her, the US is shifting no-tip culture now. She sometimes does not pay tips. Japanese people are not flexible, they tend to follow old styles. So, they will continue their style, I guess. The stylist was nice, but the receptionist destroyed her nice work. read more

Micho is a genius. I've been depending on his expertise for at least 10 years and every time I am amazed at how brilliant his technique and style is. I have super fine short hair. For the last 5 years I've lived outside of NYC so have had to rely on other stylist and while their cuts may look good initially, they NEVER grow out well. Never an issue with my Micho cuts. I just move back to NYC with what I thought was a good San Francisco hair cut...but started to look like a stereotype middle age grandmother (which I am), Micho to the rescue (two weeks ago), the change is subtle and significant, I know look like a chic New Yorker. And, I'm always amazed he doesn't charge more, very reasonable for NYC. He also does fabulous men's cuts. read more

Made an appointment with Jimmy for a consultation for perm. He was very patient and explained how my hair would respond to the different types of perms. He ended up recommending keratin treatment and I'm very happy with the finished results! He took his time and was extremely meticulous, making sure he got each strand of hair. The front desk person did not acknowledge my presence. I had to speak to him first. That was an odd experience. I did not get my hair done there that day. However, I will not be returning there. Badly needed a haircut after not getting one for many many months due to COVID-19. She's so personable, professional, and offers great styling advice. She cares about her customer and is very helpful. One of the many reasons I like Ami is that she listens well. I've had hairstylists who just like to do whatever they think it's appropriate. Ami also takes very good care of her clients. I highly recommend having her as your hair stylist. The salon is nice, clean, looks organized, and has great staff in every position. I always feel welcomed here. Most importantly they use quality hair products. Mingle is my go to hair salon, for YEARS. I have done a lot of soul searching when it comes to hair salons/hair stylists, and nothing has competed to Mingle. Sheila is my stylist, and I plan to switch to no other. I switched off to other salons for one year, and that was a big mistake. She is always on point with what I ask, and sometimes the results are unexpectedly better than what was in mind. It is a higher end, pricier salon than some, but they are all professional stylists with a lot of experience. While I could personally go a more affordable route, Mingle is always worth it. I have had botched hair jobs at other salons, only to waste more money in the long run. I have done pretty much everything, from trims, to haircuts, hair coloring, highlighting, ombre, single-process, etc. and results are consistently wonderful. I highly recommend Sheila if you are looking for a great stylist with an equally great personality. Salon space itself is clean, and I appreciate the staff and overall tone of the salon business is far from pretentious, a problem I have had at some other expensive salons. I asked for two things - make it long enough to put in a pony tail and make the shortest pieces of my face frame longer than my chin. I now have uneven side bangs. Just to set the record straight, DO NOT take off everything when they ask you to change... because I did. It's embarrassing but also very hilarious. Regulars know how to do Mingle. Just take off your shirt and put the robe on. I LOVE the setting. White and bright with bursts of color. Oh, if i remember correctly, cash only for tip. So, I got a LivingSocial deal for $60 (normally $120 for a haircut) that included shampoo, haircut, keratin treatment, and style (well, I think it included styling). The shampoo girl was amazingggggg. Well, her massage was. I never got this kind of treatment at home in New Orleans because I always went to $ places. Anyway, my stylist was Sayuri, and she was simply the best. The change was very subtle, but she made it dramatic when she styled my hair with Japanese hair products. She kind of took a while blow drying my hair, but in the end, I looked and felt SO FABULOUS! And the thing is, she said that I could come in any time to trim my bands. Man, I wish I lived in NY! If you want a haircut done by a true master, you have to ask for Shige. He came highly recommended by friends of ours who come out to see him quarterly, from FLUSHING! So living in Manhattan myself, I took the short trip over and I absolutely love my new haircut!! A lot of stylists have tried adding layers, which look awful in a few days and take ages to grow out. I had been looking for a stylist who really understood the texture of my hair, and could just make me look pretty! I booked an appointment with Hiroshi, and I could not have been more thrilled- he was so meticulous and careful, and listened carefully to how I wore my hair. I decided to chop some bangs, and I have never gotten so many compliments! I just booked an appointment to come back for a trim, and I think Hiroshi's work is an amazing value for the price. They are not well suited for men's haircuts. They botched the side of my hair pretty badly. I believe in second chances, so I went back to have them fix it and they sent me to the same lady who made it even worse. I asked them to have someone else fix my hair and mid-way through they told me they were charging me. I ended up walking out and going across the street. I highly recommend going elsewhere. I made an appt with miho and so happy that I did. the consultation was great, I was able to talk to her openly about what I like and don't like, how my morning routine usually is, etc. I showed her pictures and she recommended one that would work. And off we went. Overall great experience, nice place, not stuffy. Love my hair cut, exactly what I originally wanted. SAYURI was such a RIP-OFF. I visited this salon several times just because price is reasonable but it's not worth it. Sayuri was keep trying to sell hair treatment EVERY TIME which was way too much and annoying. One day I color my "roots" however she charged me full hair color price. I asked a cashier it must be a mistake but Sayuri said that it's more than half inch so it's full price which was totally bullshit. If you were going to charge me full price she should have tell me and I will do full hair color. All she does is raise up your bill and get more tips. I don't mind spending money for it but I do mind getting rip-off. That was my last time I visited this place. Other staff may be good but definitely don't recommend Sayuri. read more

Two days ago, I went to Mingle and had Ami as a hair stylist. In a word: impressive! I wanted a short bob which doesn't usually go well with a thick, wavy, head of filipino hair like mine. But I went for it anyways (I'm a risk taker like that sometimes), and absolutely love the way she cut it. No regrets! Ami is a master at her craft. Went here for the first time back in January and I must say that I had a really nice experience. I met Ami at a friends party and decided to come check her out at the salon so she could cut & style my hair. The salon has a nice atmosphere and I like how you are allowed to change into the robe so hair won't get on your clothes. The shampoo + massage is great and more importantly Ami is an amazing stylist.
