If only the crab ragoons were being rated, it would be a 5 out of 5 review. It's the only thing about my experience that I really liked. I ordered vegetable curry and was given a chicken dish. We had to leave the table to find our server because they never checked on us. Also, bussing here consists of wiping food onto the floor and leaving it there. I assume at the end of the night they vacuum, but sitting in a restaurant surrounded by food on the floor as I was trying to eat was....interesting. read more

We ordered take out off the lunch menu. It was okay nothing special. However they did not give us all items we paid for. The food wasn't labeled and we recieved the wrong meals. I called to tell th them they forgot the soup they argued with me and told me the lunch special does not come with soup (which was weird to begin with). I informed them I paid extra for the soup, they have all my money, and they continued to argue with me. The food quality and poor service don't justify wasting my lunch break to get food from here when there are higher quality options in town. This place was so horrid it inspired me to create a yelp account. Ate here with my boyfriend while we were in the Keewenaw. Went there just before 12:00pm on a Sunday. Had two buffets and a Coke. Price was $27.53....almost $30 for LUNCH????? I feel like I got robbed. I asked the cashier about lunch prices and she said Sunday is all day dinner. Then why the F are they open from 11-9 on Sunday? Business hours should be 3-9 if they are going to try to get away with that. Who is eating dinner before 3pm on a Sunday? They are crooks! And by the way, the food is very gross. They must know it too because they avoided asking me how our meal was or if everything was okay. I can say with near certainty that the food on the buffet was left over from the night before. Worse still is that it was tended to with complete negligence. There was no white rice available on the buffet and the fried rice was nearly gone and stuck to the bottom of the pan. Many patrons refused to eat it. The rice was not refilled in the time I was there. Completely unacceptable. A total garbage establishment. I should have followed the lead of the guy sitting next to us. He got one plate, left it full of food then got up and left. He didn't pay. Good on you, dude. You had the right idea. read more

How can anybody complain about this place? It seems to me like complaining about Ming's, or complaining about Chinese buffets in general, is just the "trendy" or "hip" thing to do. Sure there are some bad dishes on the buffet... usually something that looks really great but turns out to be sickeningly sweet. But there are so many choices, and if something is empty, just come back in a few minutes. I have never felt the buffet was understocked or not kept hot enough, and I've eaten here many times over several years. I always find something good on the buffet, and my only problem is eating too much. Look, I've been to China, twice. I've been to Korea. I've been to the Philippines. I've lived in Japan for years on end. Yet I can't tell you that Ming's is or is not "authentic." All I can tell you is, if you can't scrounge a decent meal off this buffet, it ain't the buffet's fault. read more

Let me qualify my experience as to this review. I grew up in So Cal and have eaten Chinese food my entire life, and have been to 100s of places, and tried almost all dishes, even actual Chinese (not american style). My wife and I have done buffets for 20 years and again MANY places and states even. Ok...with all that said, let's talk about Ming's. I read all the reviews before coming here, and was skeptical. I told my wife what I read, and being desperate for a Chinese buffet, we tried it. We have been three times so far, and overall...I like it. Some staff is friendly, some not so...depends on the day I guess. Same with the food...some days amazing, some just okay. The selection has always been at least 75% filled, and I always manage to find at least 3 dishes excellent on any given visit. Yes....they are not always the same every time, so roll the dice. Let me say that almost ALL Chinese buffets are never perfect every time...I could provide examples but will skip that. Lets just say anything can happen. I like the decor, and yes many of these places are not squeeky clean, and this one is not bad. The plates and tables are clean. As to the dishes themselves...I will give credit in that they do NOT all taste the same, although there are similarities. American Style Cantonese dishes tend to be mild, and are subtle in flavor, so many folks may not be used to that. It is not Szechuan style, which will be more dynamic and spicy. This place could use a couple spicy dishes to kick it up. The soups are good. The eggrolls have been good. The black pepper chicken is always great ( my fav so far) as well as the Thai Peanut chicken. Yes, there are a lot of chicken dishes, this is where they save money. It is not easy or cheap to run a buffet every day, especially when the place is not filled, so I give them leeway on some dishes not being as exotic. I have seen MANY buffets fail and change owners every couple of years only to see them fail as well.... I hope this one stays afloat as it is worth it. Sometimes I get tempted to want have a talk with them and help tweek the dishes a little bit, but that may be overreaching for a customer...we will see....I may actually do that soon. Yes, my own Asian cooking is stellar...no, its true. Will we go back? You bet we will. I always find stuff I like, even love. There is a lot to choose from. I suggest just a spoonful of as many dishes as you can to start, and then pick the ones you like from that. Then you are not throwing away plates of food and feeling frustrated. Take my experience...for Chinese Buffet, this is far from the worst and actually quite good on the right day...haha. read more

So, this has to be one of the best Chinese Buffet's I've ever eaten at. There's always an enormous amount of selections, the wontons are great and the asparagus chicken is just plain yummy (if it's being served). For those wondering what else is on the menu: it's a Chinese Buffet. You've got all of your standards, rice, soups, wontons, chicken with broccoli, beef with broccoli, etc. etc. If you're looking for fine-dining Chinese, this isn't it. But the place doesn't sell itself that way. But if you're looking for a fantastic Chinese Buffet in Houghton, Michigan - this place is it! PS - Another Chinese restaurant called "Ming Garden" used to exist just up the street from the current location. Ming Garden was a sit-down restaurant and was one of my all-time favorite Chinese restaurants. A lot of people think that Ming's Asian Bistro is in the same vein as the former Ming Garden, hence my callout above about the fact that this new restaurant is a Chinese Buffet (Ming Garden is now sadly closed). read more

I got beef and boccoli, chicken and broccoli, vegetarian delight, and House Lo Mein from the menu over the weekend as take out. It was delicious ! It was just $45.00 and 7 people ate and there was left over for dinner. I'm still thinking about it, I think I will go to lunch right now. read more

Decent food, but stupid policies.....as Forrest Gump says, "stupid is as stupid does". Tried to use $25 certificate to buy $20 in lunches....did not want any change back, just use wanted to use the certificate....lady informed me that I could only use it for two $12.50 dinners.....stupid. One time while visiting Ming's there was a fly deep-fried into my boyfriend's sweet and sour chicken. He alerted the waitress who gave him his meal for free; I still had to pay for mine even though I refused to eat anything else but a couple green beans and some soft-serve ice cream. I guess it didn't bother me that much seeing as I went back once or twice since then. They have a pretty large buffet for the Keweenaw but it's fairly expensive ($9 for lunch, $11 for dinner last time I was there) and more and more of the dishes are American (Who serves bacon-wrapped cocktail wieners at a Chinese restaurant?). As long as you don't have high expectations, you won't mind Ming's. read more

They offer two options for food, the buffet (which is 7.99 before 3:30 and 10.99 after) serving coke products and authentic Chinese food along with some American food for the picky youngsters. Not much got the buffet way of life? Try the menu, the options are large and the food is all freshly made. (Lunch specials are my favorite). Servers work hard and most are very kind. Ate here to celebrate Valentine's Day because my husband was off and the place we wanted to go was closed. The owner/waiter just tossed straws on the table. The steam tables were not hot. Honey chicken was only thing I got that was hot so it was probably fresh. But the crab Rangoons, one of my favorite things, tasted off, as in had gone bad or something. The egg roll was not crispy. The littles dessert cakes were alright. But then my stomach didn't feel great the rest of the day. Won't go back. A disappointment. read more

Ming's at one time was the highlight of a weekend out on the town. When you could order 7 stars around the moon, or their other specialty platters It was a delight to eat.. The chef was an artist. Sad that he decided to retire. Now since they moved from the cozy place now known as bambu, to the corner store next to Roy's bakery, they have seriously fallen in the standards department. The waitstaff have serious issues with not knowing what is appropriate or inappropriate . The food is either over cooked, over oiled, or just not cooked properly at all. I loved them 10 years ago, but now, As much as I crave Chinese food on Thursday nights. Never again, unless a new restaurant opens up. read more

OK, city slickers. Here's the situation. You're in the Michigan Upper Peninsula and you crave Chinese food in a town where about 50% of the residents are of Finnish descent. Impossible you say? Well, I say go to Ming Garden, in the same general area as the giant Wal-Mart store, just to the side of the hill. It even has a Chicago connection. I met the owner and he was originally from Lincoln Park before moving to Houghton for the peaceful life up north. Inside, it is a nice, clean Chinese buffet, offering the noodles, chicken dishes and other fare you take for granted living in Chicago. Here you find the ethnic oxymoron of Yoopers trying Chinese food. This place would hold its own even among Chicago's Chinese restaurants. read more

I compare it to the context of the U.P. IMO if judged by city standards it's score would be lower. A student from China preferred Mings because it's cuisine was most similar to Jaingsu Province a more sweeter taste. The food lacks full flavor but the quick service makes up for it. Having been to Ming's a few times over the past few years, starting in 2008, I can definitely say they have gone downhill quite a bit (I didn't see any recent reviews out here, so I figured I'd update a bit). Every 6 months or so, my kids beg to go to the buffet here and every time I walk out wishing I hadn't caved to their demands. People who last visited the place years ago say their menu items are good, but I haven't heard that at all recently. We've had the buffet each time and I can say with certainty that it's progressively gotten worse. Overall restaurant cleanliness is among the worst in the area--everything is coated in sticky dirt and goo. Even the tables are sticky! The buffet often has lukewarm foods that make me question their bacteria content. Everything, EVERYTHING is saturated in grease and is relatively low on flavor. The beef in beef entrees is nearly all gristle and the vegetables are uniformly soggy and bland. The only thing I care to eat routinely are their garlic green beans and jello cubes (a little childhood nostalgia). I have made a strong mental note that we will not be returning. Every other Chinese/Asian restaurant in town is a better choice. *Updating this to note that the MSG content must be pretty darn high here, too, as everyone in the family had the craziest dreams last night and two woke up with headaches. Ok, so it looks like no one on here has figured it out yet: THERE'S A SEPARATE MENU THAT HAS THE REAL FOOD ON IT. Do -NOT- order the buffet if you're looking for good food. Don't even order off the menu they hand you if you ask for one. Ask for the "other menu" - be patient, you may have to work through it as some of the staff doesn't speak much English, but make sure you get the REAL menu. That's where you'll find the good stuff: sichuan boiled beef (amazing), an assortment of soups (amazing), even things like pork stomach (amazing). Last time I was there only about half the menu was translated into English, but even with half a menu you can get some great items. Note: the soups are priced as "per person," and they do require at least two people for an order of it. read more

This is the worst Chinese restaurant I've ever experienced. The food was cold and disgusting. The crab rangoon wasn't cooked, the hot and sour soup was cold and had carrots in it - it wasn't spicy at all. The service was terrible (was given water and the waitress never came back) and when I was given my bill, I was charged for 2 meals. When I went to pay, I told the cashier there was only one person. She then asked how everything was and I told her terrible - she didn't respond. She then asked me if I wanted to add a tip to my payment and when I said no, she cranked her neck to see if I left a tip on the table (I didn't). DON'T EAT AT THIS PIT! Good services, dining atmosphere, and great selection of dishes. Taste the real Chinese food from the menu (highly recommended).
