Walleye Chunks Basket - This is delicious! The fries are cooked just right with good seasoning. The only drawback was that I found a few bones in the fish chunks, you just need to be extra careful when eating this tasty, regional treat. Visiting Bemidji to see the famed Paul Bunyan statue, I heard about the Minnesota Nice Cafe. I was unsure how to find it but lucky for me, Bemidji isn't that huge so I found this ordinary looking restaurant. Inside, the decor is nicer. Local artwork, such as paintings of wildlife and landscapes, are on display. But how does the food stack up? It stacks up excellently! The selection is varied, even boasting gluten-free offering and iced coffee! I went with the country fried steak which was topped with country gravy and came with eggs, potatoes (I chose hash browns) and toast (wheat). The food was on a small plate, but was more than sufficient for me. Don't pass this place up. Anyone visiting Bemidji needs to eat here! read more

This was recommended by the gentleman at the Bemidji visitor center, a nice walk from the center, about 5 blocks, and lots of nice downtown shops to browse on the way there or back. My husband had Minnesota Eggs Benedict, made with their corned beef, it was not clear on the menu that it was corned beef-said brisket-so a bit of a surprise, different and not for me, but he enjoyed it. Served with a red potato fry up, that was very good. I had my usual burger, be warned, it's HUGE. I had to send it back for a bit longer on the grill, too rare for me. The burger was good, although I could only eat a fourth of it. Mike ate the rest of my meat and said it was very good. All in all a good local cafe, good service and the food was fine. read more

MN Nice Cafe catered our wedding shower on Friday! We couldn't have been more pleased and thankful. We had their French dip, coleslaw, and strawberry Bavarian crepes! The French dip blew us away. I thought it would have been the standard shaved small cut roast beef you get at the deli, nope; it's was slow cooked pot roast which was absolutely amazing! I usually don't care for Bavarian creme but it was delicious and not over powering. Thank you MN Nice Cafe, you made our wedding a little more special. read more

On the plus side this restaurant has really great food. It doesn't come out of a premixed, frozen container and it's super cheap so I really enjoy coming here! I also love the servers all of them have been really nice. On the downside I don't like the way the managers here treat their employees. Every time I have gone in there I see one of the higher ups chewing out the servers and I've gotta say it's pretty disdainful. So a 5 for the food and a 3 for the poor management. read more

Stopped here for brunch with my family on a Sunday. We knew it was busy and we are relatively patient, but we ended up waiting around an hour for our food! My wife and I have always liked this place. Great food and servers and reasonable prices. However, I will probably never go back. Today we had breakfast..the Lumber Jill. Our server asked if wanted any jelly for our toast and we said yes and also some peanut butter please. Well, we were charged 25 cents each for a small tub of the stuff. This wasn't prepackaged..it was their PB and maybe a tablespoon of it. I know it's not much but it's the principle of the thing. We asked our server and she said that they are told to add a price for "anything not normally included" in a breakfast. Since when is PB not a normal part of toast? I have never heard of this being done anywhere and we eat out a lot and all over the US. If you must recover that cost, add a nickel to cost of everything on the menu. No one will notice or care. We stopped here as a family after hitting up a nearby museum. I think we came in the last hour they were open of the day... and it takes us at least an hour to get our circus seated and fed... but they were still super nice. I got a burger which was simple but good, we also ordered the chili with cornbread.... which both went over well even with the 2 year old (who loves beans). Staff was friendly and attentive. Amazing breakfast! Darla, the woman who works at the Bemidji Welcome Center, recommended this restaurant, and specifically, the wild rice omelet. I ordered this omelet with baby red potatoes and home made whole wheat toast. My husband ordered the wild rice &veggie omelet, and whole wheat toast. My omelet came topped with hollandaise sauce ...soooo good! Everything is made from scratch. Nothing we had was disappointing. The staff works so hard. Wasn't the greatest. Ordered my food to go was told 15-20 minutes I got there about 10 minutes, the food was already sitting there waiting. When I got it home it was cold I had to microwave it. I ordered biscuits and gravy, hash browns, and bacon.The biscuit was this heavy biscuit with what looked like frozen sausage patty chopped up and thrown in- super gross, it's kinda hard to mess up biscuits and gravy and they totally messed it up. It was one small biscuit as well. The hash browns probably barely filled a tea size plate and were crunchy on one side and undercooked on the opposite side. The bacon was 3 slices and I was able to eat about half of each slice because it was so fatty. I paid 15$ and change for this which is so pricy for our area and the quality of the food did not match the price. I won't be back. What a sad attempt at cafe food. Save money and go down the road to Raphael's, red Stu, or anywhere else. This place was so disappointing. read more

Have given this place 4-5 chances but only once was I pleased with what I had. The last time was the last straw. I asked for walleye chowder because I had had it the time before. They said they were out, but came back and said they found some in the refrigerator. Whatever it was, it wasn't walleye chowder. Loaded with ham and not very warm, it was the last straw for me after a bunch of mediocre to poor meals. And giving people something they didn't order, that's a good way to really take someone with food allergies by surprise, with grave consequence. I won't return. read more

We walked in half an hour before closing, which I always hate doing just out of courtesy for the employees, but we were greeted by friendly employees and to our surprise more people walked in fifteen minutes after we'd been there. Food came in a timely manner, bathrooms were clean, and food was tasty. I eat a mainly vegetarian diet and ordered the caramel apple French toast, which was very good. The menu said it came with a side of bacon, which I didn't want, so I asked if I could sub it for hashbrowns, and was told I couldn't. Although I understand not subbing things, especially for price's sake, I can't imagine a world where potatoes would cost more than bacon? Regardless, I just gave the bacon to my sister and all was fine and good. Our drinks were consistently refilled and we were very tempted by the dessert case, but decided to pass on dessert. Only downside other than the bacon thing was I felt like my portion was a little small compared to everyone else at the table, but I was also the only person who ordered breakfast, so it could just be something related to that. read more

Hands down, best restaurant I've ever been to! I'm originally from New England and must confess, the owner makes a corn chowder that tops them all! She is a sweet lady and gave me ( a perfect stranger) a hug after I presented my verdict on the chowder. I have eaten many breakfasts and lunches here. Every one is served at the proper temperature and in a timely manner. I would say I have had about 30 meals here and have NEVER been displeased, or had a single bad experience! The wait staff is fantastic! It's a dead giveaway that they really enjoy serving the customers. They treated me so "nice" I felt almost like family. The dining room is nicely decorated with a northern theme and with relaxing music. It's just a nice "down home" place you should make plans to visit if you're in town , or just passing through. Wow what a great place. Got there for lunch on a Tuesday and they had Goulash for a lunch special!!! There's so many versions of Goulash, so we were have to try. Unbelievable flavor, different noodles mixed together with a sprinkling of cheese. And it was quick and hot. We told the server how much we enjoyed it and she said she would tell her mother in law, because she's the one who made it. Within minutes she was at our table.
