I was very pleased with Mint. While they aren't a holistic dental practice, they did accept emergency dental care, which I really appreciated. I am new to the city and needed emergency dental care. They were able to take me in right away and took excellent care of me. They explained what was going on and made recommendations for what I should do. They even provided a detailed treatment plan for me to review. Overall, they are amazing! If they were a holistic dental practice, I would definitely choose them. They deleted my previous review so I'm subtracting one star. The new way of places having you sign documents is so bizarre to me. They want you to blindly sign a screen to something that they have on their separate screen that you can't see, but even if you see it or they print it they could steal your signature or you could actually be signing something you have no intention to sign. You spend your whole life being told to be cautious of this and yet now this wack process is becoming more and more frequent. And not only do they not read the document, they just sum it all up. Loved the dental hygienist and staff past the door. But be warned that unlike other dental admin offices, they don't schedule appointments based on what your insurance covers and their charges are only estimates that are not pre-authorized by your insurance. You must ASK THEM to get pre-authorization BEFORE your appointment or else you may end up with costly charges weeks/months after - on top of what you already paid. I learned this the hard way. They scheduled a dental cleaning without telling me it wouldn't be covered by insurance and only informed me of that fact after it was too late to cancel without paying a $50 fee. Their office staff made me feel like an idiot for not knowing all of this b/c they said it's listed on the endless paperwork you fill out at check in/out. I take some accountability but boy, it's the first time I've ever had this experience with a dentist office. Also wasn't a fan of the $10 protective equipment fee they charged during COVID per appointment. Time for a new dentist with more empathetic, less self-righteous office staff... read more

The office is really nice. The staff is really friendly. Almost everything was perfect. I went in to get my wisdom teeth removed, the procedure went by without anything major. There was just one thing, a few months later after everything is healed and the swelling goes down it turns out they went at it on my mouth like a bunch of 19th century miners. They have always been good to me here. Friendly and helpful staff who are happy to explain what the hell they are doing in your mouth. The dentist is sweet and warm and good at what he does. They aren't trying to up-sell you on any thing or use fear tactics: "you need dentures/ a bridge/ a crown, etc" if there is no need. In fact- the last time I was in I walked with a clean bill of health! Aww yeaa. The building is beautiful and LED certified. The place is clean and cozy AND the dentist chairs are also massage chairs. Yes that is what I said. They offer you a buckwheat and lavender heated neck pillow to relax you and I am not even kidding. Only downside is she would not elect to clean the teeth of an alligator unless it was sedated. Dental staff in the back is buoyant and relaxed which is great. After my ongoing experiences at Mint through 2016, I will never return to them as a patient. It has taken me two years to write this review (writing now in 2018) because my final appointment there felt like assault, and I haven't wanted to tell anyone or talk about it. Still don't, frankly, and hoping they don't respond to me here on Yelp because, after what happened, the last thing I want to do is interact with them again. The good: The office is clean and bright. The hygienist I saw for routine cleanings was gentle, patient, and kind. The first dentist I saw, Dr. Shepard, was kind and compassionate -- sadly, he moved to Hawaii while I was a patient at Mint, so he is no longer on staff there. The front desk staff are welcoming and professional but not totally on the ball with records transfer requests. The bad: 1. New patients must go through two separate appointments before Mint will actually clean your teeth. Irritatingly, they don't tell you this when you schedule your appointment as a new patient. It was not until I was getting x-rays that the hygienist told me (very apologetically!) that I would not be getting a cleaning that day, that it was "office policy" that they perform a comprehensive exam before scheduling a cleaning, which would be a separate appointment I needed to schedule at the front desk when x-rays were done. I have seen dozens of dentists over my lifetime and have never experienced this "two appointment" nonsense before. Despite this irritating lack of respect for my time, I continued to see Mint for my regular cleanings. 2. This item is harder to recount. I went in for a filling in 2016, during which they used their torturous "isolation device," which was far too big for my jaw (I'm a petite female). For whatever reason, the first dose of anesthesia wasn't working well. Dr. McMillan administered a second dose, but the needle hit a nerve in my gum, and I shrieked out in pain and raised my palms in a "please stop!" motion. HE KEPT GOING. He did not stop, adjust, remove the needle, or apologize. He kept the needle exactly where it was and forcefully, angrily injected the rest of the syringe contents. A hygienist was in the room with us and did/said nothing. I walked out of that appointment and sobbed in my car. I felt assaulted, humiliated, scared, and robbed of my bodily autonomy. I was so ashamed that I didn't even tell my husband. That's why it has taken me two years to write this review. My gums and teeth were sore for three months afterwards. Anyway, after that horrific appointment, I started seeing a different dentist who is much more compassionate and sensitive to the patient experience. I'm happy for the folks who have positive experiences at Mint. But I also think people should know what happened to me while I was a patient there. read more

I had been a patient of Dr McMillan for the past 5 years and have referred other people to his office but am no longer happy with his services. He attempted to fix an older implant that I had but the attempt failed. I not only lost the implant but an additional tooth in the process. I trusted him through this costly experience but when it came to helping me reduce some of the costs to repair the damage, he only offered to supply me with less service. I have really mixed reviews on this clinic. I went to Mint after 15 years with a different dentist because I wanted to stay closer to home. Upon arrival, the dental hygienist took me to a dental CT machine. I expressed concern because my previous dentist had films on me and Mint had requested my records and I really like to limit my radiation exposure. The hygienist insisted that all patient's new to Mint need updated x-rays. Not understanding the difference between CT imagine and a regular x-ray, I begrudging agreed. In retrospect, I should have refused to have this imaging done. A month after an appointment, I was reading an article in Nutrition Action and ways to cut down on breast cancer risk. One of the suggestions is to avoid CT scans as they expose the body to 400 times more radiation than a standard chest x-ray. I cringe to think of that additional radiation in the head. After a quick google search about the dental CT machines, I found a bunch of articles including a recent one in the NY Times and come to find out these machines are very controversial. It is really frustrating and irresponsible to insist new patients have this type of imagine - for this reason alone, I would not recommend this office. The dentist himself, Dr McMillan did spend a good amount of time with me which I appreciated and the reason I am giving them 2 starts. He did send me to an ENT based on the CT results which resulted in a fairly large waste of time, although I can't say that I begrudge him for being careful. I won't be going back to this office and if anything, should now write a 5 star Yelp review for my previous dentist who I felt guilty about cheating on in the first place and who does not use these dangerous machines. I guess if one good thing came from my visit to Mint, it's more knowledge on these scans - if a dentist or orthodontist even gets close to my kids with one of these, we will run for the hills. By the way, the kid in the picture on their Yelp posting scares me a bit -hope they are not pushing these CT scans in their younger patients. read more

I'd give this place six stars if I could. Nothing but great things to say about these folks. I came to Mint after years of neglecting and abusing my teeth. My teen years and early 20s were filled with 64oz sodas, candy, awful dental hygiene, and zero visits to the dentist. I've cleaned up my act since then, but still had all this tooth damage left over and an incredible fear of getting myself into the dentist's chair again. About 2 months ago I started getting this horrible pain in one of my teeth. So bad that I knew I couldn't ignore this problem any longer. After getting some recommendations from friends, I finally decided to go in to see Dr. Delong. My initial appointment ended up being quite lengthy, as the staff took all my X-Rays and proceeded to discover my 13 different cavities and 4 wisdom teeth that needed to come out ASAP. Literally, thirteen cavities. As horrible as my situation was, they were not the least bit judgmental about my situation, and spent plenty of time going over all my various issues and creating a very detailed treatment plan. Every treatment appointment I have had since then has been great. Warm neck pillow, massage chair, AND I get to put on headphones and watch Netflix while I get my teeth fixed up! This is a major perk. Dental work is infinitely better when accompanied by episodes of Futurama, or whatever it is you like to watch. No more listening to bad office music and drilling sounds. Dr. Delong has now pulled out all my wisdom teeth and filled most of those cavities. He is able to administer the anesthetic in such a way that I often don't even feel the needle, and he's very conscientious of my comfort level throughout the process. My teeth are on their way to full recovery and I couldn't be happier with the way this whole process has gone. I now have zero feelings of fear or dread when I have an upcoming dentist appointment. Oh yeah, and he also put a crown on one of my teeth! They have what is basically a tiny CNC mill in the back of the office, and I got to watch this thing turn a little block of material into my new tooth! While it was super cool watching that, it also saved me from having to get a temporary crown, making multiple appointments, and waiting for some 3rd party to make my crown for me. I have not written any postings for awhile as I have been reeling with the information I received from the good dentist, Jason McMillan DMD, at Mint Dental Works. Despite giving me the news every parent dreads hearing (no, not the one about any unplanned pregnancy) I am thrilled to have found a dentist within easy commuting distance, a sustainable/green practice, and a great staff. Here's the kicker: all 3 boys will need braces...it appears I will not be quitting my day job just yet. The office is conveniently located, has a superb staff, top of the line equipment, is very sensitive to dental apprehensions (ie, they have music, videos, etc to take your mind off any procedures). Our insurance (Delta Dental) is accepted & their office handles all the billing. Dr. McMillan takes his time & is very kind & was amazing with all 3 boys. They are even brushing & flossing like never before! Unfortunately, Santa's still bringin' 'em orthodontia this year... I highly recommend this dental practice. Once I recover from my new-found state of dental shock, I myself, will be engaging in a bit of spit & polish on the oral hygiene front. Check this office out & I think you will be duly impressed. I had a 10AM appointment. They called and asked me to reschedule for 9:30AM. I showed up at 9:15 to fill out paper work and was seen at 10:30. Why? So, that's why the -1 star. They misquoted what my insurance is supposed to cover too, so we'll see how that goes. Dr. McMillan and his assistant were both great. They were very thorough. It's been a long time (or maybe this was even a first) since a dentist has gone through and examined each individual tooth. They get 5 stars! After spiders and needles my third greatest fear is the dentist. With that said, I love Dr. McMillan and his fabulous staff. Since going to the dentist is not optional, you should definitely come here. The office itself is beautiful, LEED certified and not your typical feel for a dental office. It's open, airy and bright. All of my experiences thus far have been positive. The hygienists are kind and gentle and Dr. McMillan is such a nice guy in addition to being a great dentist. If you have dental anxiety, this is place for you. I've been going to Dr. McMillan for the past 10 years, even before he moved into the new Mint Dental Works building. He and his staff have always provided top notch dental care - I have no complaints whatsoever. They provide warm neck pillows and massaging chairs on request; and the building is bright, modern, and comforting. My last few visits I've been seen by Dr. Delong instead of Dr. McMillan. I have only needed routine cleanings the past few years, but today I needed a filling repair. Despite my initial bout of nerves, Dr. Delong made me feel completely at ease. He recognized my anxieties and talked me through each step. His assistant Anna was also very helpful in explaining the process. The procedure itself was efficient and relatively pain free, except for a bit of discomfort during the initial anesthesia shot. Bonus: the filling itself is imperceivable from my actual tooth. Let's face it: nobody likes going to the dentist. The most you can hope for is minimal dreading. Dr. McMillan and his staff take as much pain out of going to the dentist as possible. They have a beautiful office, state-of-the-art equipment, friendly, attentive staff, massaging chairs and they play movies on a screen over your head while you're having procedures done. I've had nothing but positive experiences here at Mint. The staff is always friendly, professional, and helpful. The location is very conveniently located on SE Morrison, and has parking right out front. When you walk inside and see how fresh, clean, open and cutely decorated this dentists office is, you forget that you're (sadly) only there to get your teeth worked on, which is most cases is no fun. However, Mint offers you a variety of DVD's that you can watch while you have your appointment! I got to watch Planet Earth while I had my filling, and I was amazed at how quickly the time went by. I'll start off by saying that I'm super claustrophobic. The dentist is one of my biggest obstacles as a person living with claustrophobia. I've been to a lot of dentists that disregard this fact when I tell them, leading to me usually never going back to that dentist again. But for the last year I've been working with mint dental, Dr. Rask in particular. He is an amazing dentist, super patient, understanding, and more interested in your comfort in his chair then he is in getting you out of it. It's hard not to get caught up in the clean, modern feel of Dr. McMillan's office. From flat screen monitors that are used for charting to the massaging exam chairs to the double-flush toilettes in the restroom, all of the details point to a first class experience. But we all know that the quality of care and lack of misery is what you want from a dentist's office... Mint has that too! I have had my first two lengthy dental procedures and Mint in the last 12 months. I have always been impressed with how thorough and careful Dr. McMillan is. He always has a great attitude and makes me feel better about being in the chair. His staff of assistants and hygienists are very attentive to the patient's comfort level. The technology in the office is definitely more beneficial than impressing the patients. Mint uses newer equipment and methods than my previous dentist did. OK, and I'm not complaining that the fancy charting monitor doubled as a movie screen during when I had a crown put in. Yeah, they gave me cordless headphones too. Today I had the best teeth cleaning of my life. Which makes me sad. Because temporarily, we have to switch to Kaiser dental, and I'm very sad to let this gem go, if even for a year. You see, I am one of those people who might fit into the category of "denta-phobes". After years of lots of dental work, starting with having nine teeth pulled as a child, I have developed a dislike of the sounds, sights, and multiple Novocaine injections that occur in that dreaded chair. But I finally found a place where I can relax, and as Dr. McMillan says, that's as good for them as it is for me. Apparently a more relaxed patient is easier to work on, and anesthetic is more effective without extra stress. How do they make this magic happen? With warm neck pillows, massage chairs, soothing tea, and not terrible music. The massage chair is quite amazing. They also provide movies if you want (and good looking dentists don't hurt). Last time I needed some drill work, I mentioned that I was a breastfeeding mama and wanted to avoid anything that could affect my milk, and also that I didn't respond well to novocaine and usually needed multiple shots. We decided to try it without anesthetic. So great! Much less painful than administering the anesthetic, and with no annoying after effects. They really value your needs and opinions, which is more than I can say for most dentists I have visited. OH, AND THEY ARE A GREEN BUSINESS! LEED certified building, eco-friendly, low flush toilets, and products that are safer and more healthful. Check them out! They are covered by most insurance. read more

My wife and I went to Mint for a couple years. No longer. Initially, the warm neck pillows, stylish and clean office, modern technology, the ability to watch Netflix while they work on your teeth all made for a very comfortable cleaning. But their dentists started recommending more and more dental work. They discovered multiple "cavities" in both of our mouths. Having only ever had one cavity in my life, I pushed back, so they brought out a device that scans your teeth and spits out a reading that's meaningless to the patient and told me this device eliminated one spot they wanted to fill, but I definitely needed to fill the others. So like other Yelp reviewers have now mentioned, they put us on expensive treatment plans with multiple fillings each. I went in for my fillings, and it was a disaster. They used an uncomfortable "isolation device" to hold my mouth open - this was too large for my jaw and put my jaw out of its socket but they insisted on using it. They didn't set up suction properly and I gagged on the pool of water in the back of my throat for over an hour. My teeth hurt for several weeks after the fillings. Hard to believe I went back for my next cleaning with them after that experience. But during my next appointment the dentist identified another filling for my treatment plan. My wife (who had also gone forward with her first round of recommended fillings) was also told she needed more. Needless to say, we found another dentist. Our new dentist examined the teeth Mint wanted to fill and found no cavities, no real problem areas to keep an eye on, nada. Mint appears to recommend expensive and unnecessary dental work, and when you push back they give you the hard sell. There are plenty of good dentists to choose from in Portland, these guys don't deserve your business. But we will miss the warm neck pillows. read more

Mint Dental Works is the country's "first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-certified dental office." That was the selling point for me when I starting coming here 4 years ago. The selling points now also include the massage chair and the warm neck pillow I get before I say "Aaaah" - it's not quite a day at the spa, but I can totally appreciate where they're going here. This is such a friendly and positive environment, you really can't help but be relaxed. I have gone through a few procedures here, not just your basic cleaning, and there has been nothing traumatic about them. I don't know if I would go so far as to say "enjoyable" but I never dread going back. Check them out. These folks are high-tech, professional, and really know their stuff. I have never had a dental experience as fantastic as those I've had at Mint Dental. From the initial phone call to make an appointment through my third visit everyone has been more than accommodating and so dang cheery. This dental office is sublime!! They have back massaging dental chairs, warm aromatherapy neck wraps, movies to watch while they are working on your mouth. The first visit was solely getting the basics done (x-rays and such) and making a dental plan. No cleaning, no rushing, just a genuine desire to know the patient. Imagine that? Not at Willamette Dental folks! Another item that attracted me to this office was the LEED certification and commitment to sustainability. That sort of devotion goes straight to my heart. For the first time in my life I am not dreading going to the dentist. Dr. McMillan and his staff are the reason why. We, my spouse and I, have been Mint Dental Works patients from the beginning of time. That wouldn't be the case if this wasn't a wonderful experience all around. Crazy maybe, but the ambiance of the place makes a difference....modern, yet so tastefully decorated that it gives the feeling that these folks care about the patient's experience. Friendly and welcoming space and people. And music and video to overcome any anxiety about a dentist visit. We actually LIKE coming to Mint Dental! Fancy that. But the treatment is what matters in the long run, and Dr. McMillan and the staff couldn't be more professional. Several difficult situations have been handled with total professionalism and care, and that Dr. McMillan is one amazing perfectionist, that's for sure. Plus the array of modern equipment, like making perfect crowns on site, usually in one visit, says that these folks value both quality and efficiency. I read a comment about pushing people into treatment that might not have been needed. (I think that was due to an associate who is no longer affiliated with Mint.). Never happened with us! Sure, cleanings might identify some trouble spots, and those will be documented, and follow up appointments to address those issues are available. But the patient is always in control. And the business folks at Mint have been totally accommodating to manage our appointments and payments to work for us. Pressure? No way! Hope this helps newcomers decide to try Mint Dental, and see if you, too, won't completely change your mind about what a trip to the dentist can be. I went here over 4 years ago and I am STILL thinking about how the dental hygenist said, i think you have a cavity, yea that must be a cavity i think. Then schedule me to come in for a filling next time and i never went back, feeling scamming--like she really didn't know what she was talking about but definitely knew that meant more $$$. I have gone to 3 other dentists since then and no one has mentioned any cavity. The dentist also highly recommended gum grafting to me which is very intense and not needed for the mild recession I have. I'm guessing i am NOT the first or only patient that they are overprescribing and "guessing" diagnosis in the favor of getting work done vs actually doing what is right for the patient. If you want to go here, please get a second opinion before blindly agreeing to any procedures recommended by these people. Dentists need to stop the up-selling business model and prioritize patience over cashflow. Shame on you. read more

I love it here! Thanks to the affordable care act I will be under my parents'insurance till the end of 2014. At the end of 2012 I decided I needed to find A dentist and stop avoiding the work I needed done. I have bad genes combined with poor hygiene habits that have lead to me having cavities in almost every tooth. I need 4 crowns and a lot more fillings. My insurance only covers up to $1200 a year, leaving my estimated contribution at upwards of $5,000 that I do not have at all. Needless to say I had a lot of anger and dread that, combined with surprise at the first bill, caused me to be totally rude to the front desk staff. I really hated it there at first, but it's literally 2 blocks from my house so I stuck with it and I am glad I did. First let me list the negatives: you have to pay the full cost of each visit immediately afterward, they will not bill later. Bill later usually is better for me because my parents help with the cost. They can get pretty busy so scheduling can be difficult too. Now the positives!: The staff is not only skilled but they are very personable, when I go in I feel like they genuinely care about me and they understand that payment is very stressful for me. I told the dentist that I would probably need to go to a dental student to get the rest of the work done after insurance is gone. He was supportive and offered to send them copies of my x-rays and treatment plan. They don't just want to rip me off, which was my initial fear. Now a year later I love going here, I've seen a lot of dentists in my short life and the work I have had here has been the best and least stressful experience so far. Mint dental works begs to ask the question just because you can, does that mean you should? I've had regular cleanings every six months at a different dentist with no problems so I was shocked when I was "prescribed" a treatment plan costing $1,000. I was quickly ushered to the treatment plan specialist where she started setting up appointments and payment plans for me. I politely declined and was met with some resistance. I was also told the dentist I just saw was moving to Maui. Upon a second opinion at a different dentist, I was given a spot fluoride treatment and some fluoride toothpaste instead, total cost $11. I have no doubt that if I wanted to pursue their treatment plan I would have been treated with the best of care. The office is great and the staff is nice and they offer tons of extras like tea, high tech equipment and lip balm. However, it's very easy to nit-pick and just because you could have dental work done, doesn't necessarily mean you should. Also, someone has to pay for that tea and move to Hawaii. read more

I recently broke a tooth and have only been in the Portland area a short time. I found Mint dental on Yelp and I decided to give them a try. I am so glad I did! I ended up needing a crown and luckily for me, they do that in house so there was no need for a two appointment saga. They are so focused on your comfort there it is amazing. Right when I get there they gave me a heated neck pillow to help relax me. I get really nervous going to the dentist so I really appreciated that. They also have a big screen so you can watch Netflix while they are working on you which also takes your mind off things. Both Dr. Mcmillan and Dr. Justice were great! So professional and personable. I had literally NO pain at all during my filling and crown procedure. I was also happy that no other items were tried to be 'upsold' to me. I will be recommending this office to everyone I know who needs a dentist. I had a positive with everyone I worked with, the front desk staff, the dental assistants, everybody. I actually look forward to going in for a cleaning, now THAT is saying something! read more
