Situated on a quiet street in the Jewelry District, Mirabar is Rhode Island's oldest continually operating gay bar. Though it could use a bit of a refresh, the interior is filled with lots of charm and queer energy. The space is huge- boasting a long bar, dance floor & go-go stage, a coined pool table, and plenty of bar top and lounge seating. My friends and I went on a Saturday night around 8pm and there was no cover. The drinks were cheap, bartender was kind, and we had a fab time. My "ride or die' back in the day. Back when I was first starting out with this crazy nightlife, I found Mirabar. We danced, chatted, flirted and waited for guys to buy us beers because we were young and broke, but handsome and popular. Are people not nice there? IDK about now. I loved hanging out smiling at everyone dancing, pushing the hopeful divas off the box and pulling all the geeks on! We were truly fun, loved to have it, loved to share it. I'll always love Mirabar. Mirabar is beautiful! They have a really nice leather couch in the back to sit on and relax, the music is always great, it doesn't usually get too crowded so it's a wonderful place to meet people and be able to hear yourself talking to them. Highly recommend read more

Place is great for day drinking like I'm doing currently!! Rundown though. My spot to drink because it's never busy, so you never have to wait for drinks! Pool table isn't as good as Eagles, but at least you never have to wait to use it read more

This is a great place to get a drink on the weekends and have a good time with an awesome crowd. I went on a Friday night with two friends for a couple drinks on our "bar crawl" and had a fabulous time! It was mostly a male crowd. They have plenty of places to sit and a huge bar. They also have lounge style seating on the far end of the bar. The dance floor is massive with strobe lights everywhere. I personally enjoyed the music as it was mainly 80s-90s tunes, which I don't think will gear towards the younger crowd unless that is their style of music. The only real gay-oriented dance club in Providence. The landmark business has recently moved to a new location, a bit down the street from the last one, but still in the same area. The bartenders serve up strong cocktails at good prices while guests dance around the newly polished hardwood floors and strut their stuff on the "box". They have special themed nights that keep the good times going all through week. Retro night on Wednesdays. Grilled Cheese Thursdays with strip poker hosted by Kitty Litter. Possibly the saddest place I've ever visited in a bar. I've been here on four or so occasions and can say that the only time I had fun was on Sunday afternoon. But that was once, and a long time ago. Actually, a funeral is more fun than this place. The atmosphere is dour. It is a nice space, but the vibe is depressing. You can't even eek out a smile from the bartenders. We went on a Saturday night around 11pm got one drink and left, just felt really awkward considering we were the youngest guys by about 10 years, strong drinks, but at one point I did over hear a group of what it seemed regulars say don't you know this is a 50 plus gay bar referring to us after we first sat down . My disclaimer is that we did not actually get in. Yes I am a New Yorker, a woman, and love to go dancing with my gay boys. They are the best kind of boy really-they get me, give me tons of affection, think I'm stunningly beautiful even in scrubs when I wake up in the morning, and expect nothing but my unconditional adoration. We came to Mirabar with the intent to dance the night away amongst beautiful men, but helas, we were ushered into a line on the left wall of the entrance and just stood there for 10 minutes. The place was NOT packed, and it just seemed arbitrary to me. We waited with no prospect of entering the venue, while other people cruised by on our right, and started to shake their booties. Growing up, I always thought the name of this place was Mirror Bar. (Well, I guess not growing up - more like when I was in high school.) I started going here when I was way too young, and I am half-proud, half-ashamed to admit that I can't remember if the current location is the location that I used to frequent when I was a kid. (Can anybody help me on that?) I learned many things during that period in my life at Mirabar, including how to tie a cherry stem in a knot with my tongue. Apparently, I learned many things here EXCLUDING sharpening my sense of direction. Anyhoo, I like Mirabar in its current form. It's clean, it's spacious, and there are two floors and several nooks and crannies where one can hide out. It's not super-swanky, but it is definitely not gross or scary. Downstairs is dance party heaven complete with mostly-nekkid shot boys, and upstairs (where I spend most of my time) is a little more upscale. Dark wood, mirrors, and high-top tables make for an amazing backdrop to what I think is the best karaoke night in Providence. Hit up the top floor at the Mirabar on Friday nights, and you will witness some of the most passionate deliveries of Celine Dion ballads, the sloppiest Brittney Spears voice-mimicking homages, and some of the most fabulously-trained musical theatre voices in the state. One night that I was in attendance, I watched a VERY handsome man sing an incredibly heartfelt and well-practiced rendition of "Bed of Roses" by Bon Jovi that literally had me and all my friends crossing our legs longingly. If I remember correctly (admittedly, it is quite hazy), I think one of my friends ended up crawling to this talented gentleman on her hands and knees. He was GOOD. We all prayed he was straight. He wasn't. Shocking. Drinks are strong, shot boys are cute, karaoke selection is wide, the lightshow on the dance floor is great, and constant thumping bass is definitely provided from the DJ. Mirabar is everything that a gay club should be. Plus (and this is a nice bonus!) they're super nice to straight ladies like me who love gay boys. read more

Since Mirabar moved to the new location, business has fallen apart. There are some staff members there that inappropriately touch and fondle the customers and other staff at the bar. The music has become awful. The place overall has really just become a dumping grounds for those who don't know where else to go. The management and some staff members need to just go. If it keeps up the way it has been, the establishment is out the door. Personally, I'd recommend going to somewhere else where the staff treats it's customers and staff with respect. Mirabar was the first bar I went to when I visited providence. I'm not going to lie though, I miss the old location. That being said, I still usually enjoy myself when I go. Henry and Jack are always a hell of a lot of fun and I happen to be friends with many of the gogo dancers and shot boys. I wish they would do more events though. I know the new location is somewhat out of the way but as everyone saw on New Year's Eve with the appearance from Andrew Christian, they can still pull a crowd. Keep it going!! read more

The trash factor is through the ROOF here!! First time ever was the friday after Thanksgiving. I needed to dance off my turkey and stuffing. Perfect. As I sauntered down the street...i was beyond confused as to where the fuck this place was. A door was opened, we went up the stairs, i felt like I was in some mafia scene. However then i heard P!nk playing and knew I was in good hands. At first glance, this place looked like a converted barn....with christmas lights. Much like a scene out of White Christmas...but homosexual. The drinks are STRONG and cheap. I loved it. Totally beats the prices anywhere in boston and SF. When you have great music and strong drinks...you end up with me on a box dancing. Needless to say it was a fun night. To top it off the boys walking around with the shots are very fun. Hands down, my favorite place to go out drinking and dancing. The Boston gay scene is cold, expensive and full of self-importance, I can barely bring myself to go anywhere in Boston, whereas Mirabar has got it all: cheap drinks, better music and people you can actually hold a conversation with, no matter how many $4 vodka cranberries you've had. I'm always brining new people, gay or straight to Mirabar, and everyone always wants to go back. Retro night's are a good time, but honestly, I've never had a bad time here, no matter what night of the week. Mirabar isn't the classiest of joints, but that's why it's so great. What can I say, I came here as a tourist with some locales.... Mirabar was my first taste of the scene in Providence, and it won me over. The music was excellent and I was dancing (which is something that I do not normally do). The drinks were okay, but what won me over was the 3rd floor lounge area. The pool table and piano was placed perfectly. I met some great new people in Providence and played a good game of pool with locales. So... I usually give favorable reviews. Actually, truth be told, I rarely post reviews. But the ones I do post are most often favorable. That being said... This place is nothing special... like really. I liked the music (some fun dancy pop remixes and a few house songs), so that's why it merited three stars. The elevated mini-stage on the dance floor is kinda fun too. However, the guys were a bit creepy. One too many daddies (and not the Patrick Dempsey types). The building itself seems dirty--gives off the vibe that boys of nights past have contracted Hep b in the dark corners. At least that's how it made me feel. Some might say the venue has historic charm... all I have to say is that I would not want to see the place with the lights on. The drinks were whatever. (My "of-age" friend shared a couple with me when no one was looking.) As a side note, if you're under 21, you have to check your ID at the door. At the end of the night, when you go to retrieve it, just know that they may breathalyze you if they believe you have been drinking. Apparently, if you have alcohol on your breath, they won't return your ID to you (presumably until the next day... but I'm not totally sure). So, overall, this club was okay. Nothing more, nothing less. (Actually, maybe a little less than okay). But they played my favorite Selena Gomez remix, so I shouldn't hate on them too hard. read more

This place is really cool. It's 3 levels of fun!! Never been to a gay bar in Providence so this was a bit unexpected. The place has "shot boys" roaming the premises in their underwear. The bottom level has a center stage that everyone wants to be a part of. Everyone wants to shake their tits on it even though it's already soo packed. The middle level has a bar and it overlooks the center stage. It gives prowlers a place to pick out their next victim. I actually thought the setup is very useful. I like Mirabar because it attracts both boys and girls. The building's old charm and upper deck vantage of the dance floor below make it a great place for seeing the whole place at once. I was out with my niece for a night on the town and Providence. We first stopped at platforms dance club on poe realizing that that was not a place for her. I wouldn't of minded hanging out there but her Comfort level was not accommodating and receptive to that. So we moved on I haven't been out doing the Providence nightlife in probably a decade G Spot was Julius place that we enjoyed period So we found mirabar pack the car walked in it's created by the door people check their ID gave us our wristbands prior to going in I called them ask him a few questions about if there was a DJ with the theme was dress code exedra whoever was on the phone was very rude he says we're really busy we're really busy okay that's how you hung up so we go and walked around the block we walk in there's only a maybe probably 9 or 10 people in there at the bar could you imagine if he had a real crowd to tend with. Suicide of rudeness being confidence level was right there too. So we step up to the bar to order a drink but it looks at me funny one gentleman turns around to the other with something and they start laughing I didn't find it too freaking funny so we turned around so let's get out of here before I end up hurting one of these punks pukes. So it's well The Wristband off threw it in the trash and walked out never to return again we got over to the dark lady we realize that the dark lady was the New Providence Eagle who's no longer owned one one of my friends Rob b. So after walking in additional lock to the end of the street and find in the dark lady we're very pleased with the layout the new location was really nice and accommodating everybody was really friendly there was a decent crowd the music was pumping the dance Flo was good everything was really nice. After talking to a few of the patients they had some of the stuff they said that yes the marabar in fact was not what it used to be. I guess it depends on what you are looking for... Are you looking for cheap drinks? This is the place for them. I can't really talk of the quality of the drinks because I just had beer. We never did figure out how to get to the second or third floors and were too afraid to ask. I think there is a cover later on in the night but we went at about 9pm on a Saturday. Mirabar club is not that great but is not that bad nether. Falls in between, a regular gay dancing club to shake your bom bom and drink with friends and maybe if you are lucky get some attention. So this place is like a pillar of gay life in providence, it's true there are other bars, but like Irene said, this is the only one that can really be considered a club (oh yick I forgot about the Eagle, but you'll be better off if you do too), and it's also all gay all the time, woot. So the music is gay, duh, that's what you get at gay bars. It's all house remixes of various gay/pop songs, whatever if it has a beat I'll beat it. Nights during the week are touch and go, tuesday used to be the good weekday night to go, but now it's wednesday, because retro will always be chic. And despite what little miss Merri L. says, they don't stop the music mid song, ever, or play the same song twice. Thats what you get for listening to a girl about a gay bar. So, ya if you're a twink, you will fit nicely in with the crowd, and probably get laid if you want (you naughty little minx you), AND if you're looking for twinks this is where you should go. One of the newer things about mirabar is the addition of the third floor piano bar. Barry Russo rocks it out multiple nights a week playing all sorts of songs you just want to sing along to (or slur, oh man I love sweet caroline). I guess I don't see the reason for a $7 cover, maybe to pay fines for having underagers in there? Oh wait, this is Buddy Cianci land, so I guess maybe to fund the third floor piano bar installation. OK so Mira bar is fun on occasion! Not every night. I love Wednesdays because it is all old school 70's 80's and 90's music and its not too packed where you can't dance, like on the weekends. You have a mixed crowd of people, the usual, some new people, random people, etc. It is definitely the best night to go. Otherwise Friday nights are fun but still a little packed. They play generally good music downstairs but the best part is their Karaoke on the third floor. It is a good environment and people have a generally good time. Its nice to have the nixed settings of the upstairs and the downstairs. Saturday I do not recommend because it is way over packed there will most likely be a line to get in and its filled with the typical "club boys." Stay out of the bathrooms on Saturday!
