Background: My mom visited the Moon Salon in earlier this year in June 2019 to get her hair done in…read morepreparation for my younger brother's middle school graduation that took place a few days after. This review is in her words, translated to English and posted on my Yelp account because she does not have one. This review is for a hair treatment my mom went to Moon Salon for and not a review on a hair cut. My mom wanted to get her hair permanently straightened, as she's been getting this done for years at various other salons whenever her hair has grown out. She's driven past this salon on several occasions and wanted to try the place out. She did not make an appointment prior to coming in but was the only customer there and Moon helped her with her hair needs. Moon placed the straightening treatment on my mom's hair and placed her under the heat dryer chair. Moon set the timer for 45 minutes then that's when other customers started coming in. There were 2 or 3 other customers and she was helping them with their hair needs when the timer she had set for my mom went off. Moon came to reset the timer for another time and proceeded to help these other customers. When she was finally done with these 2 or 3 customers, she returned back to check on my mom. Keep in mind, the time that has passed was 45 minutes and then some. She took my mom to rinse off then blow dried her hair and flat ironed it before sending my mom off home. During this process of washing off and styling, my mom felt mild pain but did not think anything of it, thinking it was a side effect of the treatment. When my mom got home, she combed her hair and noticed a lot of hair falling off. She then started patting the top of her head and it felt incredibly prickly to the touch. The next day my mom went back to the salon to talk with Moon and let her know that her hair was falling off and burnt to a crisp. Moon, at first denied any part, saying my mom's curly hair was the reason. This is far from the truth as we are Asian women with normal, straight hair. Moon did not want to return my mom's money so she gave my mom an oil treatment but to everyone's disappointment, that didn't help. With nothing else left to do, my mom returned home with her crispy hair. My mother just wanted pin straight hair and ended up with her hair being burnt off. A lot of her hair broke off and in some places, she had bald spots. Where her hair parted, a lot of hair missing as well. In short, she fried my mom's hair off to the point that it all frizzled, sizzled, and broke off. 2 months later, the hair that's fallen off has started to grow back and it is evident as it sticks out like cow licks. I am saddened to this happened to my mom as it was the mistake on Moon's part to leave her in the hair dryer for longer than needed just so Moon could work on other people's hairs. My mother wanted me to write this to let others know to be aware when coming to Moon's salon for hair treatments. She did, however, say that Moon cuts hair beautifully -- her hair treatment services are what others should be wary of. Photos will be posted along with this review so that those searching for a salon has all the information when taking this salon into consideration.

Moon (the owner) cut my hair, nothing special about the cut, it was rushed, fast, and sloppy. Jenny is always friendly and kind and listens to what I want, and then does that. She remembers me from one time to the next so she knows what I want, but if I want something different I ask and she does that instead. I like that I can walk in any time and there's usually not much wait, or no wait. Plus on weekends I can pop by the free place (Free Oakland Up) and pick something up for free. She spoke with my in Cantonese about the length of my cut n color. I wanted to cut my hair to shoulder length with a bit of layers, and dye my hair back to my original color. My caramel balayage hair got long and brassy. My hair kept falling out and was very snarly. So it was time for a new hairstyle for the holidays. Joanna did a good job trimming my hair to the shoulder length, with layers the cut is a bit shorter than shoulder length. My hair grows very quickly so my new haircuts tends to cut shorter than I expected. I didn't mind that. Joanna cut my hair very quickly like 10-15min, she even used a hair straightener which is very different from other stylists I've been to. It's very interesting how fast she trims it and accurate the cut is. After my haircut, Joanna's colleagues took over and dyed my hair. Joanna instructed them to just dye it over my caramel balayage since I wanted to dye the rest of my hair the same color as my roots. So they did and took their time to get every dye into my hair. Waited like 25-30min for the color to sit, then they washed my hair with shampoo & conditioner. After the wash, she blowdry my hair and styled my bob to curve inwards. Then Joanna continued to trim the layers of my bob and used a straightener to help her cut it. Overall I think they did a fair job with my hair, it's a bit shorter than I expected but my hair grows out quickly. That's not an issue. I prob need to buy a hair straighter now to style my hair for work. What surprised me the most is the price. My cut and color costed $50, the last time I got my hair done was in Pasadena LA and it costed over $100. The price for a new hairstyle in Oakland is way cheaper!! I'll definitely come back for a quick trim as my hair grows out.

I've never had a wait going here, but they do a decent haircut for the price. Parking can be tricky because this place is in the heart of Oakland's bustling Chinatown. I usually park a few blocks eastward. As long as Laney college doesn't have classes in session, I can usually find a space without an issue. Its always a pleasant walk through Oakland's Chinatown.
