Holy moly the food is hot. Mirch: That is a hot pepper, I get it. The food lives up to its name. It was also very tasty. Sometimes it is ok to suffer a little while eating super spicy food. The nose runs, your heart beats just a bit quicker, every bite feels like it might put you over the edge. But really, it can't get any hotter in there: the mouth is already an inferno and your job is to make your brain realize there is more to the food than heat. And to drink water. Such was my adventure at Mirch Masala while friend told us that she chose this place over another because the other made really hot food. LOL. We ordered vegetable biryani, palak paneer, and other vegetarian dishes and they were all very good. I would not say exceptional as they were a little bit on the greasy side, but very tasty. The waitstaff was kind and competent and the food came out quickly. The ambience was bright and bustling but not chic or cool in any way. Good enough for a quick meal after long travels. I would likely want to try a different restaurant in the future, but I think this place is a solid four stars. read more

Normally food is nice and customer service good . I normally order samosas by delivery through ubet eats . Samosas are quite nice . Cheap and cheerful, this is definitely a great find for an authentic spicy dish along the curry river that is Tooting High Street. (Umm, yuck. Possibly the most visually disgusting sentence ever written on Yelp.) They stepped it up with fast service, fresh food and the most liberal of BYOB policies, allowing us to pull out the whiskey + lemonade combo we were coveting. Long story short, a young couple was drawn to my Spiderman hoodie while waiting for the 44. We got to talking and during the bus ride, the young couple invited me, my girl and her sister to join them for curry. Another stranger (who was not joining us for curry but happened to overhear us talking) recommended Mirch Masala. The place is BYOB and everyone from the waiters to the chef to the owner are friendly. I don't eat Indian food often so take my review with a grain of salt, but the food here is really good. Who needs Brick Lane, when Tooting has some of the best curry houses in London. Amid such intense competition, I would have to say that this place does the best curry in Tooting. Mirch Masala is always busy (a good sign) and reasonably priced. All food is freshly prepared in the open kitchen towards the back, with diners given a choice of how hot they would like the curry (when they say hot they mean hot). This has been endlessly recommended to me, but then by now, so have most places in Tooting. Each one has something different to offer, I find. We chose Mirch because we wanted a slightly smarter-than-canteen (ruling out spice village and lahore karahi, both excellent) setting, and the BYOB was a bonus. Mirch has to offer: excellent chicken wings (made famous by the review stuck in the window, which I used as leverage to make my party order them), not very meaty but full of flavour. 'Proper' popadoms (not greaseballs). Onion bhajia which is actually like spicy onion rings and deliciously bad for you. Beautifully cooked meat, lovely flavours, huge range of dishes. It also has in my experience pretty poor service - mango chutney received ten minutes after we ate all the popadoms (so we had some more, of course), a refusal to take away dirty plates so we had to re-use them, and an announcement they'd run out of okra for my main just after they'd served the other 5 people their dishes.... I was perfectly happy with mine in the end (lamb to die for), and I've learned to expect this kind of service as it's sort of standard 'let everyone be' stuff - we did sit for over 2 hours. But it still grated when we ate too much chilli and had to share a single glass of water! A friendly and lively Saturday night crowd and no hurry atmosphere make it a good choice though. 'Meh, I've experienced better' about sums this place up. Not worth writing home about. Standard Indian food, but just not particularly good. I took several curry loving mates a while ago. I figured that with Tooting's large Asian population, then it would be the place. This place (and Lahore Kebab House) had the best reviews. However we were left disappointed. There's not much of an abience, but I can forgive that. The food was just not very good. We ordered several dishes and they only varied in heat. The food was bland and much of a muchness. My Jalfreizi was OK, but not much more. I would not go back. That says it all really. Though I have not tried many, there must be better curry houses in this part of London. read more

Came here on a late Saturday night after the races to grab a quick curry before heading home. The waiters were friendly and quick to bring out the starters. I ordered the chicken biryani mild and some keema naan on the side. The two paired really well, and luckily I got to steal some tikka masala off my friend - which was great as well. The portions are generous, and none of us could finish our food, even though we had been yelling and screaming for the past 3.5 hours and had worked up quite an appetite. This Mirch Masala is probably the grottiest one. It could really do with being redecorated! Service is standard fare for authentic punjabi cuisine and the food is pretty good but not as good as it used to be. I used to rate this as Tooting's best but I think it's been overtaken by Spice Village in terms of quality and service. read more

This place is the bees knees for authentic home style Indian curry in London. You must know the addage about a good place to eat? The idea is you go somewhere that is busy with people from the country of the style of food means it must be good? Well Mirch rocks this one. It is jam packed with people almost always and many of them are Indian families not wishing to do the cooking and cleaning up tonight. I had a reccomendation a couple of years back from an Indian guy I used to drink with who told me 'it was the only food better than his mum's". Now i havent had the pleasure of having his mum cook for me, but Mirch Masala is so good it won the tiffin cup for the best curry in Tooting a couple of times. This is a REAL accolade! It has been rated in loads of cheap eat guides, best 50 restuarants in broadsheet papers and even my little brother who I took here loved it so much he offered to pay. It was only about 20 quid for the two of us, but still he is not often that free with his money. Other than that Gry is right about everything she wrote, but i would add they have another (quieter) branch in Norbury and you can bring in your own booze therefore...i love it too! read more

Decent food but not much else to say. Our server was new and not trained so she struggled, but got some minor assistance from the other guys, who probably should have been supervising her better. Good lamb dishes, but the naan wasn't great, the mango lassi was kind of gross, and there were a couple chicken dishes that we didn't like that much. This Indian restaurant does curries to die for for very cheap, with prices for a main course starting at something like 4.50 (possibly less for vegetarian courses). It's become something of a tradition for me and a group of friends to come down here for a meal on a Friday night before we hit the town. Although this place is in big demand (you might have to queue for a bit) we've never had a problem getting a table for a big group of people, and I've always found service fast and efficient. It tends to get a bit loud and lively here, so it's better suited for a group of friends than a romantic dinner for two. I'd say it serves the best curry south of the river! read more

I came here with a friend of mine during the week. We are both asian and know our food very well. The place was pretty empty when we went so we had a selection of tables. The food was not nice at all !!!!!!!!!!!! The kebabs were raw and we found a piece of glass in the plain rice. We asked to speak to the owner and was told that he wasnt there. We didnt finish our meal as were "put off" with the whole thing. We will never return there again. I suggest you stay away aswell. read more

I was surprised by how spicy the lamb chops and chicken wings were but they were delicious and smoky (though I still prefer Tayyab's tandoori lamb chops). Prawn rolls were the least interesting of the starters. Then mains started pouring out - kahari ghosht (lamb), kahari chicken, kahari ginger chicken, kahari chicken keema, dal, kahari fish, kahari aubergine, kahari paneer, rice and loads of different naans. All delicious with very vibrant spices - the ginger chicken had lots of fresh ginger, the lamb was tender, the fish was flaky and the dal was lovely and creamy. read more

The restaurant is always hugely busy, and there's one reason for that - great curry at a reasonable price. Having commented on it's busy-ness, we have always gone in large groups and been able to get seated. They also take reservations if there are lots of people coming. The service certainly leaves something to be desired - some dishes turning up at different times, requests for extra drinks being ignored or forgotten about, and a repeat request for some mango chutney with starters being totally dismissed, until about a minute after everyone had finished eating their main course... But service is not what you go to Mirch Masala for. It's the range, quality and price of the dishes on offer that makes so many people come back, again and again. Onion Bhajia at the start of the meal could be the start of a heart-attack but are crunchy, crispy and delicious. Meat Samosa and Pakora are good, and the lime pickle with complimentary poppadoms are great (as is the onion salad, yum). Notable things to try are the paratha (not as greasy as many I've tried, and more wholewheat), Bhindi Gosht (Lamb and Okra - amazing, amazing, amazing), along with the Ginger Chicken, and try some Karahi Keema Corn with that as well. Lassi is tasty too. The restaurant is also Bring Your Own with no charge for corkage - amazing! While the restaurant doesn't seem new, that clean or the most amazing place to eat, the food more than makes up for all of the down-sides. Definitely recommended. read more

I was not impressed with this restaurant at all. The food was average, nothing to rave about, although the chicken kebabs were nice. The service was really bad, and this was on a quiet day! Felt like the waiters were doing you a favour! The toilets were disgusting, which made me think what the other areas would be like! On a busier day, I observed some people getting preferential treatment!!! As a result will not be going here again. I would reccommend Spice Village. I feel like the reviews here that criticise the food are almost like daggers to my very heart! I think it's about the dishes you try. Make sure you try the chicken wings to start, they are simply awesome. My favourites are the jeera wings, hardly available anywhere else they are an addictive USP. Then try deigi gosht as a main, it's very flavoursome and I think some of the faves (like jalfrezi and tikka masalas) are done better elsewhere. Now re-review it! read more

Awful food and service, would agree with another reviewer that Norbury is so much better. This outlet insults the Norbury branch. The staff act as though they are doing you a favour and the food is sub-standard. Had the chicken wings and they were the worst chicken wings I have ever had. My wife seemed to enjoy some of the veg dishes. I don't understand why all the branches are not standardised, surely that is the point of having a brand.
