Our son has attended Mires martial arts for almost one year now. Sensi Geoff is a fantastic teacher that helps to motivate the children and encourage them appropriately. He encourages focus and dedication to grow in karate, and sees the students for who they are and is able to meet each one individually as well as the group. He includes philosophy in his classes and has older students help to demonstrate more sophisticated katas and help the younger students as well. Mires Martial Arts is a great dojo for you to learn karate and life skills. The schedule is very convenient as the dojo offers several times each day to accomodate multiple schedules. My daughter and son both joined and have learned much more than karate. They were challenged to work hard to earn their belts and stripes never given anything but earned it by practicing and taking feedback. They both are more confident with their self defense but also with handling confrontations, what to do in specific situations, and how to deal with difficult feelings and people. All of that in a fun welcoming setting. My son is learning new weapons and has partaked on the beach session. Sense Geoff has a fun teaching method to engage participation and creates an environment that brings enthusiasm and engagement in learning. He is always maintaining a safe environment for every student and also pushes them to challenge themselves to be their best. He has a great sense of humor making learning fun while he still maintains discipline over the group. He is building confident and respectful students that will benefit from his teachings for a long time. We've been having a great experience with Sensei Geoff and the dojo! A few months in and my son is progressing fast through his stripes. Sensei Geoff is great with the kids, creating a fun and approachable atmosphere while balancing the discipline of karate. My son (9yo) has quickly made friends and enjoys going to class everyday, eager to make progress on his belts. When we were considering dojos, we sat in on a few classes around town. Five minutes into observing Sensei Geoff's class, my son turns to me and says "this is the one". The kids obviously have a great time. Sensei Geoff is patient but firm. Sensei Geoff and his family are amazing. Our son went there for a few years and when we moved to another State, we were upset that our son wouldn't be taught by Sensei Geoff. He had Parents Night Out once a month. You could drop your child off and they had pizza and watch a movie. Our son loved it and looked forward to it. My son has been going here for about 2 years and absolutely loves it. Sensei Geoff challenges the kids while also making it fun. He will not give you your stripe/ belt unless you earn it. He is at the dojo 5 days a week and even hosts a monthly "Parents Night Out" where you can drop off your kids from 5-9pm and they order pizza and watch a popular kids movie while the kids adults get to go do whatever they want. I signed my niece up a few years back, she loved it and Geoff was so patient with her. She didn't keep up with it but she still talks about how she used to do karate! Now my son goes to Sensei Geoff and he's been with him since he turned 5 last year! He used to call it ninja school! He has learned so much and loves going to karate. Sensei Geoff has a lot of patience with my son, he's very talkative and asks tones of questions! (Sometimes his questions are nothing about karate) He has learned a lot. And even with the pandemic he continues with his karate. Speaking of the pandemic, Sensei Geoff goes above and beyond to keep the dojo and class sizes safe. He is constantly cleaning/sanitizing. He takes temps at the door. Everyone wears masks. And he cleans in between classes and does a big clean and sanitize at the end of the day. I feel safe having my son come to class. He also send updated emails constantly, keeps everyone informed with classes, events and just updating the community! This is a great place to bring your kids. They will love Sensei Geoff! I absolutely love Mires Martial Arts. After trying out larger martial arts schools who's cost were excessive and one on one attention minimal we decided to try this smaller dojo. Sensei Geoff runs a wonderful program. My son Jaxon, who is not typically in athletic boy, has fallen in love with martial arts. I feel like the sensei knows all of the kids well and gives ample opportunities to climb up the ranks in belts if the students are motivated. The dojo itself feels like a family with holiday events and wonderful communication from the owner. Because this is a smaller dojo ran by one main sensei, there are times when classes must be canceled for a week or so due to family emergencies or events but somehow this just adds to the family feel that the dojo has. So happy that we stumbled upon such a wonderful place so close to our home. Not to mention the fact that this particular martial arts school is much more affordable than many others I've encountered. I really don't understand why the owner runs a 3 year old class, when he clearly has no business teaching small children. The first time we were there, he looked right at my 3 year old daughter and told her she was driving him insane. (Not a way I would ever speak to my child). Fast forward to the third time we came. While siting waiting for her turn she scratched the mat with her finger after the class had been told not to, and when she stood up so excited for her turn, he told her "you don't get a turn, you need to leave and go home, now." I've never seen a child get sent home. Children don't always listen the first time. SHE IS THREE! I felt uncomfortable by the way he spoke to all the children each time we were there. Now I have a very sad little girl who keeps asking why he was so mean to her. When I told him we wouldn't be back, he laughed at me. Avoid this place at all cost. read more

I recently joined with Mires Martial Arts. Because my age and size I didn't think I could join, but Sensei Geoff had no problems with me joining. Wonderful class to be in, great people, great all around environment. My 6yr old niece also goes there. She is now an orange belt. Karate is for adults too! I checked out Karate schools and various types of martial arts schools for a long time and I think Mires Martial Arts is the best for the following reasons: 1) Awesome instructor. He's very knowledgeable and experienced without the attitude. He's funny, supportive and he make class really fun. He's intuitive and has really good communication skills. A lot of teachers, in various fields, don't have that. It really is a dojo with a sense of humor. Class isn't run in a militaristic style. I'm 50 and too old for that. It is fun, you train hard, and laugh a lot. 2) No contract. In this day and age with the job market etc., being as insecure as it is no one can really commit a year plus. He gets this concept and therefore has no contracts. But, most people wind up sticking around for a lot longer than a year. 3) $80 a month is cheap for adults. Most Karate schools will charge $100- $125.00 + for twice a week, at least. Here you can pay $80 a month and go about 4-5 times a week. That's very unusual. I went to a martial arts school in Concord that wanted $271 a month for no contract and that was several years ago. 4) Very clean dojo with mats. Some places will have you training on hard floors or ply wood! I've seen it. This place has clean mats which is better, at least if you're over 30, it's lower impact. 5) It's heated in the winter and air conditioned in the summer. A lot of place aren't. Karate is for adults too and this is the place to go for adults and kids!!!! FYI- I don't work there and I'm not getting paid to write any of this. It's just the truth. read more
