A friendly and funky art space, bar and restaurant, Mirkwood offers an alternative to the stodgy and predictable culture of Arlington, with delicious food and exciting music and events. The atmosphere is fantasy-themed and incense-y, the service is prompt and helpful. Bar menu and specials are surprisingly unfocused and un-intriguing in such a creative place, but the taps are ok. Missing star for ill-kept restrooms. A solid three star place, but the engaged and upbeat service and local music give them that fourth star and my glad recommendation. Over a decade ago I was here for a magic event, and I liked the staff and food. the service was polite abd super professional. it's been hella long and I remember thiking I'd eat the food again, which I renember involving sweet potato fries. I love the high ceilings and stage, it's a very comfortable experience for eating, games, or music. The cards were in a room in the back and weren't a main thing for the venue. The only downside of my exlerience there was the other patrons there for the tournement, never have I seen a more wretched hive of scum and villiany. I chose this spot because Yelp! reviews said they had good vegan choices. When we entered, my friend and I loved the eclectic nature of the place. It's almost impossible to describe. There's some Victorian flare, some nature, some steampunk... all in a dark, mysterious-type background. There's a barber upstairs and a tattoo shop beneath the restaurant/pub. It was mid-afternoon, so the bartender/hostess/waitress (wearing all hats) didn't expect to be serving lunch but she was sweet and attentive, nonetheless. I was disappointed when I saw zero vegan options on the menu but, when I asked about them the waitress was able to list several vegan sandwich patties they serve and, when I ordered and said: "No mayo or cheese," she said, "I have Veganaise and vegan cheese..." I went for the Saturday Drag Brunch and had such a blast. The queens and king were absolutely brilliant, had great audience interaction, and put on an incredible performance. One of the queens did Live Singing (some covers and original songs) and I literally got shivers up my spine during a few of her sets from how good she was. As for food I got French Toast, a Blueberry Muffin, and the Hobbit Platter. Everything was great! The Hobbit Platter was the best of the bunch and was a ton of food - everything was piping hot and delicious. I shared it with several other people and it was polished off quickly. I definitely plan on coming back in the future and would definitely recommend coming here if you want a fun brunch outing or just want to enjoy a good drink in a fantasy setting. read more

We came to this venue on a Saturday night. I can't believe I am the first to yelp about it. Not much can be found about this place. The history about is very interesting. It was orginally a church? This "Alamo" looking bar/restaurant/tattoo parlor has its funkiness. FYI..$10 cover on live music night --wish it was free if you buy food or drinks. We knew two of the three bands that were playing that night, hence was why we were there, so we paid the $20 cover. Personally I hope the bands got most if not all of the cover. For a Saturday night, it was a small crowd--mostly the family and friends of the 3 bands. Very dark and intimate small venue on the main entrance. Restaurant and bar #1 is located on this main level. Upstair is the tattoo parlor (no pic because I didn't go up there.) The 21 only downstairs has another bar with a lounge and two pool tables. Food was okay. Come for the live music or karaoke night...eat before hand. Good funky artistic vibe...waiting service was also good..food was at below par in my opinion. read more

Such a cool Venue for live music! The atmosphere is very eclectic! Food is good and much more than a bar menu!

We tried the Mirkwood for the first time over the weekend and unfortunately it will probably be our last. I ordered the alfredo and my mom ordered the french dip. We waited just under an hour for our food with no explanation at all! We both had garden salads (VERY plain, but as described on the menu, not docking points) which may have helped alleviate some of the wait if they'd been served to us before the main dishes, but they were brought out with our entrees (again, almost an hour later!) The restaurant was empty aside from one other table (who came in after us) for most of the time, and the waitress still couldn't keep track of her orders, confusing multiple dishes between ours and the one other table. When the right food finally made it out to us, all of it was cold! I'm actually sad because I think if the food was served hot, it would have been good! We were starving and after the already long wait, we weren't about to send our food back and wait even longer! Also, my alfredo was supposed to come with sauteed mushrooms and there was not a single mushroom in sight. Not a big deal at all if they're out, we're flexible and have come to expect things like that these days, but I wish it would have been communicated. Trying to make sense of our wait, we actually wondered if the cook went on break after breakfast (which would have been understandable) but that was never actually told to us and it doesn't explain why our food was cold when it eventually made it to us so we're really just grasping at straws at this point. I hate to feel so negative about a small, local business but considering the restaurant was nearly empty, the service and food we received here were unacceptable. A hot, tasty meal would have made us more forgiving of the service and great service would have made us more forgiving of the cold food but since we didn't receive either, I really don't have anything positive to say. The only reason for two stars is the food had the potential to be good. read more

Fun vibe, friendly staff, great drinks, the best Bleu Cheese Dressing around and lots of different types of entertainment. We have been a few times and everything we have eaten is very good! First time here and my wife and I found the atmosphere interesting to say the least. We were the only other people in the place having lunch besides another table where it seemed like an employee was eating. The menu had plenty of choices and when I wanted to order the street tacos, I was told that they were out of carne asada. So, I had the french dip. It was good, but it's hard to mess up french dip. My bread could have been toasted a little more. My wife had the BLT, she said that the sourdough bread seemed like it had been cooked on the grill. I noticed that the bread was done on one half but not the other. The fries were natural cut fries and they were cut big like long steak fries, which I like. The waitress/bartender was very nice and personable. I don't think that it is a place we will go back to. read more

The Mirkwood was interesting... The boyfriend and I came here last Friday night to see a band that knows. The ceilings are tall, the decor is pretty cool, the music is loud. Cover was 5$ Chocolate Panette 8$ to share The Panette was ok. Curbed my chocolate craving, but not anything I would go back for. The inside tasted like a chocolate cake with a cinnamon dough covering. I think the chocolate center was too much. We ate around it. I would like to go back and try some regular food. Bilbo's breakfast sounded pretty good. The seating is either up front, or in the back blocked by the sound booth. You have to stake out a place pretty early if you don't want either of those places. read more

Very limited parking. Besides the few parking spots in front, there are only a few on the side, and a lot of spots that specify no Mirkwood parking. So we drove around a few blocks and found some public parking, then had to walk a couple blocks to come back. We were confused once we got inside because there were several people setting up a merchandise table at the entrance and they were blocking any way to get through. We'd never been here before so we stood there thinking maybe they worked at the restaurant - they didn't. They asked if we were there for the show, and we said no because we only wanted to get dinner (didn't even know what show they were talking about). The man who asked kinda shrugged and gestured for us to go figure out how to get a table. They finally let us through and we walked back to what looked like a bar area. Still nobody acknowledged us, so we left. It would have been nice if there was a sign indicating where to park and also maybe a sign indicating "wait here to get seated" or something. I imagine we weren't the only people who left out of sheer confusion last night, or maybe this place prioritizes whoever is doing a show. I don't think we'll be back. read more
