They really support local farmers and other small businesses by pushing for Vermont products, which is honestly phenomenal. Can that get a tiny bit pricey, yes- but you are helping our local economy with shopping local! Not to mention everything Jim creates in the deli is more than worth it. I ordered our Thanksgiving dinner from the Mill Market when I was asked to host it at the last minute. They had amazing selection and beautiful preparation. All I had to do was stick the food in the oven for a short time and we had a gorgeous dinner. I couldn't be more pleased. Microwave till no moisture is present 3. overdo salt and pepper 4. cook sausage in sandwich press 5. remove when resembles bbq potato chip 6. don't toast muffin. Stopped by around 5pm to buy cider donuts. I asked a couple employees -- nobody knew whether their donuts were made that day or from a previous one. Freshness aside, the donuts aren't what I remember getting here as a kid. They taste like an industrial dessert -- soft cake molded into a donut shape. Really disappointing sandwich experience. Reuben was the smallest I've ever seen, w/scant evidence of sauerkraut or thousand island dressing - - for $9! Husband's roast beef had bitter onions, no horseradish - awful -- also $9. Although I appreciate the store's effort to stock locally-sourced items, a "deli" has to do much better than this. read more

At one point, I was the only person in the place. I realized this while I stood at the cash register waiting nearly 7 minutes for someone to ring me out. I get that it is not the Kwik-E-Mart but the sole employee in the place should not go for a short walk in the middle of his shift. The store itself is not bad. They have a unique selection of beer, a decent selection of wine, and not a very good selection of anything else. I'd probably go here periodically if I lived within walking distance but if I am in my car I can find what I need by driving just a little farther. Nothing against the place. It just doesn't come to mind when I have to run out in my car for something they have. read more

I absolutely love how true to Vermont this place is. It's a quick stop for some groceries, local beverages or outstanding cider donuts. And don't get me started on their deli, it's phenomenal. Ok so we pass this place all the time going into or out of Burlington and never stopped. But we had a coupon for a creemee and we were out driving. We thought well let's get a sandwich and take it to Shelburne beach. There was almost no one in there and it took over 15 minutes to even take our order and then another 15 to make it. The sandwich itself was so so just ok nothing special. While they made the sandwich I noticed the rather large black fly flying around inside the deli case. The salads looked old and tired. The place looked old and tired. The creemee was so so. Wish we had something better to say. The bottled water was good! read more

This is a repeat listing. See the Mill & Deli for more information and reviews. Here's what I wrote for my review there: I live near this place that looks like a factory on the outside. The building is very old and looks run down, but the inside is really nice. I was impressed by the selection of wines (some of which is local), but my favorite is the maple goodies. By that I mean good old maple candy and maple cremees! I usually go just to get a kids size maple cremee which is absolutely delicious. It's not expensive. I heard their ice creams are really good too. For those not from around here, a cremee is just soft serve. It's a perfect place to stop by in the summer time. There are some benches on the outside. I like to go on my way home or when I go for a bike ride. Just wish they could make the outside look a little better but otherwise no complaints. Nice place to grab a sandwich if you're heading towards the outskirts of South Burlington. I haven't tried the food, but they look very good and I'm totally going to at some point. read more

I am the eternal optimist. I give "two strikes" to every establishment where I purchase a meal; that is, two chances to impress me before I decide to never set foot there again. Rarely does a place turn me off so badly on the first visit that I do not want to return. In the case of The Mill, I should have listened to my instincts. My first visit to The Mill--granted, it was at least a year ago-- left such a sour note in my mouth that I have hesitated to return. The food was decent, as I recall, however the customer service was non-existent and one man was just plain rude. I never waiver in my cheerful demeanor and polite mannerisms, however I still remember the individual working there that day, whom not even I could win over with my kindness. Today I found myself driving nearby and decided to give The Mill a second chance. Its last chance, as things turned out. The one star I am giving the place is for the good sandwiches and beer selection. But those two positive elements, even combined, cannot overshadow the negative. My wife and I placed an order for two sandwiches, ordered off of the board behind the counter where the names of the sandwiches and their contents are listed. It was a slow time and there was nobody ahead of us in line and the staff did not appear busy. The young man making the sandwiches was working directly underneath the aforementioned sign, yet somehow he managed to add things to my wife's sandwich that both she does not like and which are not on the menu. Not one item was added, but two. I might be able to explain this as perhaps some slight confusion, however there were no other sandwiches with similar names nor lists of ingredients, leading me to conclude that the employee probably does not care enough about his customers to pay attention and make the food properly. Could it get any worse? I asked for my sandwich with no onions. I felt reassured when the young man repeated my order back to me. Surprise, surprise, there were onions on my sandwich! Of course, we live half an hour away so we did not realize the discrepancies until we were home. How difficult is it to screw up a simple sandwich? When traveling. I have often stopped at Subway locations inside gas stations, staffed by teenagers who are too nervous to make eye contact, yet they have never made a mistake with any of my orders. Come to think of it, none of the numerous simple restaurants and food vendors I have been to in my life have made more than a small mistake in one isolated instance. Yet The Mill, which for all appearances is a reputable and respected local business, cannot even give me good service on the two visits that I chose to give them my business, with simple sandwich orders? Something is really wrong and it is blatantly obvious that the employees do not care about their customers. Suffice to say that the owners must not care either, as I doubt I am the only person to have such experiences, and surely the owners have been made aware of the level of service that people receive. The icing on the cake was how The Mill had a cashier working who could barely speak English. I could understand employing that person in a function that has minimal contact with the public, but when the face of your business is someone who cannot communicate, I do not know what the management was thinking. The family in line in front of us was asking the cashier some simple questions. I don't know how they were misunderstood, but the cashier gave very odd answers that had nothing to do with the questions being asked. This happened about three times before the woman speaking to the cashier appeared to get very frustrated and left. Then it was our turn. The cashier seemed confused at the concept that we ordered two full, complete, different sandwiches, and kept attempting to price them based on each being half of a sandwich. We repeatedly said the names of the sandwiches we ordered and the prices, but it never seems that our explanations were understood. All in all that was one of the more bizarre checkout experiences of my life. Last but not least, the positive aspects of The Mill. The sandwiches were tasty, the ingredients fresh, and the combinations of meats, cheeses, and extras was well-executed. I appreciate how the menu includes some unique takes on common sandwiches, such as the nearly-complete turkey dinner on bread. The beer selection here is a hidden gem, which I would have loved to continue to enjoy. Lots of single servings in the cooler, so one can sample from the numerous microbreweries represented by the selection. Plenty of New England beers plus some special surprises from some of the larger breweries. read more

Overpriced sandwiches for what you get, $5.99 for a tiny half sandwich. BLT had nearly raw bacon, one small piece of lettuce, a slimy slice of tomatoes, no cheese when I asked for it, and 3 measly banana peppers. For a Boars Head deli, I was expecting a fuller more impressive sandwich. Service was mediocre, no one went out of their way to be friendly, but they weren't overtly rude. At the counter, check out was slow, the lady didn't seem to know how to fix the credit card paper. And when I asked if they had bags of ice, she looked at me confused and said she'd have to check. I had a horrible time in there. The guy who made my sandwhich was not very friendly in his tone, it was a bald guy and he might have been the owner. After I ordered my sanwhich it took nearly 15 minutes! I then proceded to check out and the kid who checked me out was a super friendly kid who was wearing a Cubs hat, who chatted me up about sports while I waited for my lunch. He is the only reason why I am giving this place two stars. Wont recomend for a week of food shoping. I then ate my sandwhich and it was all mushed and soggy. Eh read more
