How have I not reviewed yet this place yet? I love the adorable vintage aesthetic, decor, and stylists. Their front counter also contains vintage jewelry for purchase. Every time I've been here has felt relaxed, and not busy/loud like other places I've tried On all my visits here I've always had Briana as my stylist. Friendly, fashionable, and listens to my issues. I came in initially because another stylist had given me a very disappointing dye job. I was really frustrated because my "ombre baylage" looked more like tiger stripes. She blended and softened and did a little color correction. I was so very pleased with the outcome. And it didn't cost me my first born child like most salons. She recommended some color-helping products and I am glad I splurged for salon quality products to go with my new great dye job. The color still looks great weeks later. The full name of this place is "Miss Laura's at Cla-Mar." The owner, Laura, also owns Honeypot next door. My friend Kristin couldn't say enough nice things about this place, so I went. I'm so glad I did. Walking past, it looks like it's closed... like maybe it went out of business years ago (maybe because the door is covered by a steel screen). Inside, the decor is kitchy, retro, and somewhat cluttered. It is filled with old, dusty boxes of old hair products and beauty shop memorabilia. There are two hairdressers there: Laura and Dominique. The latter did my hair. Both hairdresser's are chatty and engaging. While I was there, an old lady was getting an old-fashioned set and several colorful characters came in to say hello or got great haircuts before my eyes. There was lively conversation going on the whole time I was there. To my delight, there's a little WiFi creeping in at the front of the store, so I got to do a little surfing while I waited for my foils to take. About the hair. This is the best color I've gotten in a long while. Dominique really listened to me and told me that was something Laura really stressed when she started there. She knew exactly what I was asking for, asked the right questions to understand what I meant, then made suggestions and checked them out with me. The cut is great, too. Perfect for my hair. I needed some layers to thin it out a bit, and layers I have. I have naturally dark ash blonde hair, and she wove in 2 colors for a perfect blonde with depth. I'm a happy camper. Can I just say that this place makes me SO happy. This past month I split up doing the highlights and cut (I wanted the refreshed colour for the wedding but needed the full length). Full foil highlights were $90 a few weeks ago. I can handle that. My cut and blow dry was $30 this weekend. Just - Wow. In Back Bay I paid $50 JUST FOR A BLOWOUT!! Scarlett makes my life complete. After several horrific experiences with many hairdressers all over Cape Cod, I ventured to Boston after this place came highly recommended by my best friend. The salon is tucked away and is full of history! From the old hairdressing chairs, to the antique scissors hanging on the wall, I immediately fell in love with the atmosphere. As if that wasn't cool enough, the people that work there are some of the most interesting, fascinating and eclectic people I've ever met. You can tell that everyone in the shop is more like family and you instantly feel apart of that when your chatting along with them. On top of the EXCELLENT atmosphere and people there, they all somehow managed to fix my hair! (It took the whole salon standing around me, going... "uhhhh, what happened here?") Scarlett put me at ease as she patiently took hours to correct my horrible hair and her magic worked! My hair hasn't looked this great, or felt this good in years! She and the other fabulous women there, single-handedly restored my hope in hairdressers and now, they are the only place I will go to. I have gone back once more since my first visit and only fell more in love with the place, the people and the price, which is exceptionally reasonable for a boston salon. Just got my 2nd haircut here, and I'm a huge fan. A few reasons: 1. They give you a great haircut. These ladies know their stuff inside and out. I love how my hair looks when I leave- and when it grows out. 2. They're really super nice. 3. They give you the haircut that you want, but better. I've had a number of hair stylists people be like, "We're going to make you look edgy!". To which I respond, "No, I don't have an edgy job, please don't make me look edgy." And then I walk out with some asymmetrical shenanigans that I explicitly said I didn't want. These ladies are cool and hip and have purple hair, but they don't try to give you purple hair if you don't want purple hair. 4. It's affordable. AND, they don't try to upsell you on overpriced junk you don't need, which I love. Plus, since the price isn't crazy, I can get my haircut more often, which is better for my hair. 5. The hours are great. 8:30 on a saturday? Late on Thursdays? This stuff matters. read more

For the first time ever I have finally felt comfortable in a hair salon. The decor is incredibly cozy, not the usual sterile salon feel. The hairstylist I had was Dominique and I basically came in with one stipulation, I didn't want my hair to be cut short. She accomodated accordingly with a suggestion of layering my hair to make my waves come out. She also listerned when I told her that I didn't blowdry my hair or use product and she didn't use any on my hair which most salons end up doing without asking. The conversation and music was very good. A very mixed crowd comes here which makes the experience all the more interesting. The cut is amazing, without using product or blowdrying my wavy/frizzy hair turns out really nice. read more

Before I even begin to write a review, I must say that I do not know Miss Laura (at least I think I don't). The only person I know are Miss Laura's is my stylist and I think she and the salon are amazing. It is unfortunate that these postings have seemingly become personal, beginning with comments alluding to a desire for age discrimination. I don't typically write reviews or get involved in someone else's confrontation, but I feel compelled to share my experience. I have visited many salons, some of which have had great reviews, but I left each stylist's chair outraged or mildly unsatisfied. I learned about Miss Laura's through a friend of a friend. Ever since my first cut, I have never sat in another stylist's chair. This place has the patience to deal with indecisive (but picky) people like me. If I think my cut is not short enough, they cut more. If I think my hair needs some thinning sheers, they use them. If I think my hair is too short, I give the cut a day or two, typically receiving an abundance of compliments. I am a quiet person, but I'm not afraid to discuss the direction or outcome of my hair cut at Miss Laura's. Even when my hair is cut in a way I did not expect, the experience and the outcome are always pleasant. I realize that an individual recently had a bad experience at this salon, but I do not think this is a reflection of the establishment as a whole. I am not giving Miss Laura's a five star rating because my hair always comes out the way I imagine it, but because the stylist is amazing and patient, my hair comes out great and I love the accepting and diverse atmosphere. read more

Scarlett did my hair, and she added a wonderful touch to it. She listened patiently to me when I told her how so many stylists had gone color-happy with my highlights, eventually turning them a yellow-y bleach blonde color. I'm pale and freckly, so this isn't the best look for me. Scarlett said, "Let's add more of a gold color to it." I agreed, but wondered if in the back of my mind, I might come out looking like an Emmy statue. NOPE. She pulled the color off fantastically, my hair now looks warm and bright, and the old yellow highlights mix perfectly with my natural color thanks to the dash of honey tone she put in. She also gave me some advice on getting my hair to feel more soft and less dry. I followed, and it's working really well. Much appreciated! On top of all of that, this place is fun and welcoming. Everyone was talking to each other and no one was afraid to jump in to a conversation. It's so talkative even, that I'd say its welcoming to those types who don't feel like chatting up the stylist the whole time. Background: I had THE WORST balayage highlights done to my hair at the salon I go to in my hometown (regular stylist was on vacation and I used one of the younger girls). I came back to Boston freaking out because I knew I wouldn't be home again until July and these highlights were brassy and basically made me look like I had two months of growth. There was ZERO blending. I live in JP so I started looking around and saw the good reviews for Miss Laura's so I just walked in and told them my sob story. Laura sat me down and told me how it could fixed and called over Emily to ask her opinion. I ended up booking an appointment for partial highlights and a toner with Emily and she is fantastic. She got my blonde to the EXACT shade I was imagining and blended everything expertly. It looks incredibly natural and I love it. I absolutely cannot say enough about how happy I am with the finished product. Also their prices compared with literally anywhere else are fantastic. Less than $100 for partials AND toner. I didn't need my hair trimmed so I can't attest to their cutting prowess but for color Emily is amazing. read more

SO. I had a 7pm appointment last night, and managed to get myself SO lost coming from Mattapan over that I didn't find the place until 730 (and I left at 630 just in case!!). Miss Laura was WONDERFUL, at first we had rescheduled for Saturday since she had another client coming in, but then she suggested I just go grab a bite at the sushi place down the road and come back in a bit. I did and it was well worth it! I have long wavy hair and didn't want to part with the length, Miss Laura was able to bring the va-va-voom back without loosing the length. She's amazing. I went to this place based on these reviews, but I was very disappointed. However, I have to say that the reviews are true: They are extremely nice and they take the time to listen to what you want and look at your hair to make recommendations on which style is best for you. I liked the cut, but really hated the blow-dry. I think they need more experience working with curly hair. Also, they gave me a price over the phone ($25) and I asked again to verify, but when the time came to pay, I ended up paying $40 while having to redo the blow-dry again at home! I would recommend this place to those with straight, easy hair, but not for girls with wavy/curly hair wanting to have a nice blow-dry. read more

Sometimes when you see all the great reviews you go, "Do they really need one more?" Well Miss Laura's is taking my Yelp virginity away - this is the first thing that came to mind to review because: 1) I've consistently gotten great haircuts there 2) I laughed for almost the entire hour of my most recent trim 3) They did not hold it against me that I came in with some odd strain of ebola I recognize that the thought of someone walking into a hair salon with ebola would deter you from frequenting said establishment, but whatever. It wasn't really a virus, it was my tooth that was f-d up (see next review...) so know that Miss Laura's is a healthy, sanitized, and highly fantastic place to relax and be cared for, or at least have your hair cared for. They don't work on teeth so much. Not that I know of. I don't even think they really get into waxing. Or tanning. Or nails. Juuusssst HAIR. End story, the hair cut was so good that the next day my co-workers were able to overlook my sad-in-pain face and go, "Wow, your hair looks great!" and go book appointments for themselves. I'M LEAVING MY ORIGINAL REVIEW INTACT simply so that --- should anybody have had a similar experience in the now distant past --- you might identify with what I wrote, and I'd want you to know that YOU MUST GO BACK. Whatever originally drew you to this place is real, and if there was some funkiness (not the good kind) for a bit, it's funk-free now ('cept for the good kind.) When I wrote my original review, my understanding is that the namesake was gallivanting all over the world---- okay, maybe just to one country for a few months as family career path necessitated it -- but she's back. Indeed, from that other country, it appears one Miss Laura was so attentive and intuitive to how her near-and-dear-to-her beauty shop was doing that she followed up with me here on Yelp. Not to try to change my review, but to say sorry if that was my (our) experience, and that it's not the way she would have wanted things to go, and to invite me (us) back for another try upon her imminent return. He went back, was really happy with the haircut AND the vibe at the place, got me to go back with him the next time, TWO happy campers now, and, well, the bad review at this point should be for my lack of speed getting this addendum locked and loaded. I have huge respect for somebody who can truly hear the words of a disappointed customer and address them, and that's what Miss Laura did. Now, it's all about the hair again. So if you have some, and you need it cut, read the reviews, and know that good cuts from stylists who listen at affordable prices in a great-looking shop are attainable. I stated coming here about 6 or 7 years ago after paying WAY too much money for a highlights that I hated (my highlights were like Garfield orange) at a "Best of Boston" salon where a haircut was setting me back $75-$100. Realizing the error of my ways I turned to Yelp and as a resident of JP stumbled upon the great reviews of Miss. Laura's Consistent excellent job with hair cuts and highlights. Salon atmosphere is not fancy, this means you are not paying for this in the cost of your services and prices are super reasonable. Has a very funky vibe consistent with JP, always have great conversations when I am sitting for my partial foil. They take Visa/MC for payment but you can't add your tip to the CC charge so bring cash for your stylist. read more

I'd never heard of/been to this place until last week. I was thinking about making an appointment at Station 8 but had a hankering for something new. Emily was my stylist. She mixed the perfect shade of reddish brown for my hair and I loved the cut. I was pretty vague about what I wanted, so I'm not quite sure how she managed to give me the best cut and color I've ever had. I also really enjoyed her sense of humor and the chit-chat. I hate small talk and will actually delay haircuts and dental work to avoid it, but I really enjoyed talking to Emily. She's awesome. This place has a lived-in feel, which I like. Too many of the fancy salons I've frequented have had these sterile, intimidating environments that make getting a hair cut feel like a medical procedure. Here, I liked the old-school hair dryers and chairs and random knick-knacks. I liked that it was small and that the rear door didn't have a screen. It was comfy and chilled-out, the clientele was diverse, and they played Pink Floyd. Will definitely return. And I paid around $80 for a cut, "virgin" color, and blow dry. Which is the best deal ever and enabled me to tip Emily what she deserved an still come out ahead. read more

Oh, Miss Laura... After scouring this city for a cheap hair cut (read: under fifty dollars), I had turned to Floyd's barber shop. I never asked for a tricky hair cut...just a bob. Long in the front, short in the back. No layers. I had reference picture after reference picture. But somehow, with every person I saw, I got a completely different hair cut. How hard is a bob? Its like, a standard cut, guy. Finally, one day in August, I got the worst hair cut imagineable. I looked like a (no offense to readers), a very butch lesbian. The cut was not flattering. It was too short. I felt awful. I stuck it out until November when I finally decided to give Miss Laura a try. My boyfriend had previously lived in JP right down the street, and I had walked by it so many times. My studio manger at my college was also a friend of Miss Laura's. All signs pointed to yes. I made my first appointment before Thanksgiving. The shop is adorable. Very punk rock. Straight out of a John Waters movie with all sorts of vintage furniture and knick-knacks and vintage hair dryers straight out of the fifties. Gorgeous! Miss Laura is very kind and listens to what her clients want. She's been in the game forever and really knows how to interpret a lay person's idea of a hair cut. Laura also has a great sense of humor. Just tonight, when I was in the shop, she was talking with another client about how her new puppy was eating its own doo doo. Laura is also really great at gauging the kind of person you are and what sort of sense of humor you have. My sense of humor has always been honest and crass, and we were got along almost instantly. But with older clients, I feel that she is a bit more respectful and her remarks are never aimed at anything but my split ends. Laura's great. Oh and my hair? Perfect. Laura cuts a mean, MEAN bob. She listened to what I wanted and was very conscious of how to maintain my hair, as well as smoothing out the little imperfections (like this weird cowlick bit i have at the end of my hair on the left side. She thinned it out so it wouldn't flip so much). I've referred two other clients to Miss Laura and they've both been totally satisfied. Oh and their hair is mad sexy. Your search is over! Yes, another review! I found Miss Laura's through yelp, and was not disappointed. Let me start out by saying I have thick, out-of-control, curly/frizzy hair. I'm terrified of getting it cut, because it so often turns out horribly, horribly wrong. (See the mullet given to me in Arkansas.) The reviews I read gave me the confidence to give the salon a try. I was a little disappointed at first that I couldn't get an appointment with Dominique and instead saw Katie. I was totally calmed down by talking with Katie. She sat me down, glanced at my perpetual I-give-up-on-my-hair ponytail, and started talking with me about my wants and needs. She listened, and encouraged me to go a little shorter than I'm used to. Gulp. She swore it would make the curls come alive. I took the plunge and said, "Okay, I trust you." I was incredulous, but it came out great! About halfway through the cut, Katie kind of jumped up in down in excitement and said, "Oooh! This is going to be a good cut!" Which made me feel good. She also talked me through my concerns about maintaining the look, and 3 weeks later, was right on the money. So - way to go Katie! The only reasons I didn't give 5 stars are pretty minor. A) I had to wait a week or so to get an appointment. B) Katie talked on her cell phone while cutting my hair... if she hadn't been doing such a great cut, I would have really objected. It did make me nervous. C) They didn't actually sell the hair products they recommended, and I had to go down the street to get them. D) Their hours are kind of unusual, which made it hard to get a hold of them to make an appointment. But overall, I'd highly recommend them! read more

I am just going to start this review by telling you that both myself and my grandmother go to Miss Laura's. Never in my days would I think that Nana Walsh and I would go to the same salon!! Dominique is such a great stylist and I always know that I can trust her when I say, "just do something different and fun". She picks really great colors, understands how to tame my cow-licks and is really fun to talk to. She also has the best tattoo ever that she got for "her ladies". I think my grandmother fits into that category. Clearly the stylists at Miss Laura's can do just about anything when it comes to hair! I really wanted to like Miss Laura's at Cla-Mar. It has this interesting funky vibe. Cheap. Great reviews. Thought I would leave with a fun, sassy haircut. After the first visit, I was a little disappointed, but thought "Hey, maybe this is just growing pains" as I get used to a new place. The cut wasn't quite what I asked for, but it wasn't awful. I actually did get complimented at work. Thought I should try a second time. Different season, different stylist. Wrong again! This time, not only was it not at all what I asked for, but it was just was not ME. After a shower, I found I had to play with the look a lot to suite my taste. I still cringe a bit. I suppose I should have mentioned my dissatisfaction immediately so she'd have a chance to fix it, but I was a bit afraid for her to go any further. I went here this past weekend, and I have to say this was the best experience i've had at a hair salon in awhile! walking in was like walking into a retro- 1960's hair salon complete with old hair salon items, packaging and styling...really cool and inviting decor. Laura, the owner, was running a little late, but she is the one who worked on my hair...I went in for a color and a cut, and she gave me a book of colors, gave me plenty of suggestions, and told me I had free reign to do whatever i wanted...and really listened to what style i was going for! I wound up choosing a red tone and goldish/blondish highlights..she also covered up my old highlights and re-colored them a darker hue for better contrast... ...it took about 45 minutes to dry and when she finished she gave me a great, simple chic haircut that I wanted.!!!!..she cut off all my dry/split ends and my hair is healthy and soft again..I absolutely adore it! my hair was kinda all over the place before and now it feels a lot more cleaner and easier to manage in the AM! There was another stylist there that day named katie who was also really friendly and bubbly and helpful. I brought along a friend and Laura was great. She told me my friend could come and sit and talk, while she worked on me and we all had great conversations about random stuff..she cracked me up soo many times...Laura is really laid back and cool, I would def. recommend coming here...I paid a total of 70 bucks which isn't bad, considering I had 3 types of foils done and a great haircut.. and i'm sure if u went anywhere else it would be double that price and prob more, if you had more than one color. she also told me if I went home and I didn't like something, that I could come back and she would fix it at no cost. I really felt comfy here..I don't know if they take credit cards, since I paid by cash, but I did see someone pay by check...so you might want to bring some cash with you...I don't know if there are any atm's within' walking distance. You also are better off making an appointment at least a week in advance...a lot of walk-ins came in and she couldn't take them because her schedule was full! A very unique place, a refreshing change from all the other salons out there. The girls who work there are young, vibrant and cater to all crowds. You can probably get anything from a traditional layed cut to a red faux-hawk, quite honestly. The price is CHEAP as heck for the quality, and it's only a quick bus ride from the Orange line. I tried Miss Laura's after some so-so experiences at a salon down the street and I am in love. (Thanks Yelpers for the tip!) I've gotten 3 cuts from Dominique -- all terrific -- and my last time there we finally went for it and I have BANGS, which I adore and I can't believe I lived without for so long. Dominique always takes the time to talk about my hair with me and make sure that I'm cool with whatever we're doing in terms of upkeep, daily styling, etc. And you can't beat the price (although I must admit that the salon is not particularly swank, which I imagine is how they keep costs low). After my favorite Dellaria hairdresser left, I was very much in need of a haircut but uncertain as to where I could find a good one for a reasonable price. I agree that this is one very special place, so comfortable and homey. I enjoyed talking with Dominique while she cut my hair which looks soft and natural, She was running a little late so I went across the street to Harvest Co-op to do some shopping, returning with my groceries. I love Miss Laura's! I have been going to Katie to get my hair cut for a few years now. I was new in town, needed a haircut, and happened across a Yelp review of this place so I decided to check it out. Going to Miss Laura's makes you feel like you are part of the cool group of kids. The place can be pretty easy to miss if you are not sure where you are going. The interior is decorated in a funky style and there are fun things for sale in the front. There is also always some hilarious conversation going on. I have curly hair which can be difficult to deal with, but Katie handles it just fine. I went in for a haircut last week with no real idea of what I wanted, no picture, just a vague notion that I wanted things 'shorter.' Katie somehow managed to interpret my mumbles and gave me the most FANTASTIC cut! It is truly amazing and I love love love it to death. I have gotten more compliments on this style than I can remember ever getting. Not only is the JP location great, the price is unbeatable. Plus they now accept credit cards! This is the most fun I've had at a salon, hands down. These women are talented, funny, and, naturally, give a great cut! And I must say, it's the best price in town for a new 'do. I'm very grateful that this rockabilly palace of beauty culture is in my neighborhood. Whether you need a trim or a nice set, they do it all. I only had to walk by with my dog who stopped to ponder for a few seconds to provoke an employee around 1PM on 3 March 2020 to bark at me from inside of the store to "curb my dog" and stop his peeing, though he nor we had done nothing wrong. (He didn't pee or do anything besides look inside) Nothing could make me want to pay money to a business whose employees are so hostile and so demeaning that they will insult your dog through the mailbox hole in their door. read more

Emily did an amazing job with my hair. I have curly hair and I decided to go super short. Emily listened to my ideas and gave me an amazing short cut that is super low maintenance. Not to mention, they are kid friendly and incredibly easy going. I am so impressed with Emily's ability to give me a cut that not only fits who I am, but makes me feel super hip too. I've found my new hair salon. I went in today to get my over-grown bob cleaned up and Miss Laura, herself, did the "do". She was meticulous and I have a great haircut to show for it. The environment is relaxed and the staff is completely friendly. read more

I had to think about this for a minute but Laura of Miss Laura's has been cutting and coloring my hair for at least 25 years. Laura came to my rescue after another stylist turned my hair bright baby duck yellow instead of blond. Laura has been doing right by me ever since. She started working on my hair when I was in my 20's so we have tried all kinds of cuts and colors together from pixies and bobs to crew cuts and blond ,blue and numerous shades of red.She always listens to what I have to say and always works hard to give me what I want. She has, on occasion , re cut and made adjustments when I wasn't 100% happy. All you have to do is ask.Clearly this is an art not a science. The atmosphere at Miss Laura's is unpretentious and friendly and free of that ridiculous snobbery so common at a lot of salons. I just got another great cut a few days ago,and i couldn't be happier. read more

I got a haircut here about 6 weeks ago. I forgot the name of the girl who cut it but she did a great job. It was just a trim so it wasn't difficult. Why 5 stars? The ambiance was great, very 1950s beauty shop vibe. They even sell vintage jewelry at pretty low prices. And the most important reason. My trim was around $20.00. read more

I work all night and mistakenly scheduled an appointment to get my haircut early in the morning. I walked down to MIss Laura's completely dazed. This was my first experience at Miss Laura's and it was super dreamy. Katie, my stylist, understood me as I inaudibly and sleepily slurred my requests. Katie gave me the perfect haircut while she kept me laughing with her hilarious entertaining stories. I do not remember a time when I walked away from a salon feeling so satisfied and with such a sassy mane. I am going to have to start taking hair growing vitamins just so I have an excuse to return very soon. read more

I absolutely love getting my hair cut and dyed here. Dominique is an incredible colorist and I think she especially loves to go wild on my hair when I ask for pink and purple. Basically, I had been looking for a salon that was cheap but with amazing quality, and Miss Laura's exceeded my expectations. Maybe it is because I love how Dominique has been styling my hair, but I do genuinly love the friendly, old school vibe they have going on. I keep going back even when my hair isn't ready for a cut because I just like going OK! Oh, That must be why my hair has gotten so short ;) read more
