Fantastic! We picked this place on a whim looking for one of the best brunch spots in Baltimore and we were very happy with the selection. Once we arrived, we saw how much acclaim Miss Shirley's has received, such as from Restaurant Hospitality Magazine and Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. I can see why! To start, I really enjoyed the pimento cheese biscuit and the Shirley's Crush cocktail was quite refreshing. For my main, I went with the Southern Slammer Sandwich, which already sounded good but I couldn't pass up a winner of the best breakfast sandwich in America according to Restaurant Hospitality Magazine. Absolutely delicious. I loved the simple ingredients yet their flavor together was unforgettable. A great sandwich and not overly heavy in my opinion. The stone ground grits were incredible as well. I had such a great experience at Miss Shirley's! I ordered the pancakes and eggs and absolutely loved it. The pancakes were fluffy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked, and the eggs were just right. You can really tell they focus on quality and consistency. I also ordered the mimosa and my goodness... it was strong...but tasty! The overall atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the service made the experience even better. It's definitely a spot I'd go back to when I want a really satisfying, comforting meal. I came here for Sunday brunch and it was crowded. They don't take reservations, but the wait wasn't too bad for our party of 5. I got the chicken and waffles ($22) and I have to say the chicken itself was not seasoned and the waffles were pretty dry. I was very disappointed in my dish as it had no flavor. I also tried the crab hash eggs Benedict ($32). There was a decent amount of crab meat, which I appreciated. However, the poached egg was not runny at all as it should be. The spicy Bloody Mary ($15) was pretty good. They don't have Tito's vodka, they only have Three Olives vodka. The garnish was nice. It came with okra, a stuffed olive, a lemon and lime wedge, and a slice of green tomato. The Sunrise Mimosa ($12) was okay not the best. Not sure what kind of champagne they used, but personally, it wasn't to my liking. The service was a bit slow, but our server, Tara, was very kind and knowledgeable. It did take a while for us to put our order in, but as mentioned before the restaurant was crowded. Unfortunately, if you need to use the restroom, you need to take the elevator to the third floor to the sky lobby because they do not have one at the restaurant. Wow they are busy!!! Unfortunately we were seated outside after our 50 minute wait, because we said we wanted the first available. There were fans but no breeze. 5 star service, 4 star menu, 3 star food Went here for the first time in a couple of years and was really feeling the ambiance location. Service was friendly and helpful, and the latest menu looked pretty good (although there were missing my all-time favorite menu option of bbq Mac&cheese). Where things really fell down was the food itself. I got the bbq grilled cheese sandwich which was much more of a warm sandwich on toasted bread. Nothing like the buttery grilled cheese would have expected. The bread was basically dry toast, and the cheese wasn't melted and the bbq was basically room temperature. Flavors were fine, just a bit disappointing. My wife got an omelet that was impressively large, but also impressively bland. Hot sauce helped a lot, but the chicken in the omelet had zero seasoning on it, and the veggies didn't help much. Again, not inedible, and dramatically improved with hot sauce, but not something we would order again. I do want to re-state how good the service is. For such a busy place, they really go out of their way to look after you. read more

Been coming here for years and can't believe I never left a review. This is a gluten free breakfast haven! Honestly, not much has changed in 10+ years in terms of how hard it is to find a solid gluten free breakfast. BUT Miss Shirley's gives you a little bit of everything and I could not be more grateful for that! I don't think anyone offers the options they do. The menu for GF folks is ample, marked right on the standard menu so no need to ask for a special menu or struggle to figure out what you can and cannot have. I branched out a little this time and tried the Breakfast Tower I think, has plain GF pancakes (although the flavored ones are amazing!), grits, bacon, deviled eggs, and a delicious strawberry mocktail. It was pretty quiet start to the Sunday when we got there which is great because it can get packed! Has some good ol' Motown playing and a nice breeze on the outside side patio. read more

Went there on the Friday morning before the Army Navy game. The place was packed but somehow they got us in without a wait. Our server was great. She was very helpful with the menu options and attentive when we needed something. LOVE the practice of bringing a box full of tea varieties when you order hot tea. I had the shrimp and grits. It was spectacular. Brother ordered the blueberry pancakes. He unfortunately didn't like them. I am not a pancake guy but I thought they were undercooked. Might not order those again but there are a lot of things I would like to try. With all the pictures and autographs on the wall, this place seems to have a very storied past. While in Baltimore, I did some research on Yelp (of course), and found this staple. I was really impressed with the history behind the name. The service was absolutely nothing less than perfect,, the food was fresh, tasty, and unique. If we're ever back in Baltimore, we would definitely stop by Ms. Shirley's again. Once we got our table, we were crammed in to a table of 4. We barely had any space on our table once we got our food. Don't order the coffee! It was watery and sour and they charged us $5 a cup for a tiny cup!! I ordered the shrimp and grits on fried green tomatoes. It was tasty and I would order again. But they shortchanged me a shrimp. A friend got the same dish and he had 6 shrimps. :( The portions, apart from my dish, were big. You can definitely share an entree between 2 people. Not a huge fan and apparently, this was my second time here though I have no recollection of the first time. Chose Miss Shirley's due to the vegan menu for my wife and the gluten free options for me. It's a nice comfortable diner ish place and the service was fine. Nothing to rave about and nothing to complain about. I got their breakfast bowl with added turkey sausage and a second egg. First, while I get things cost more these days it is outrageous to charge $20 for a breakfast bowl that's mostly corn and one egg and no other protein. Mine ended up being almost $25 with the add ons. As for taste, it was meh. Needed a lot of salt and pepper. The turkey sausage was good but everything else was bland. I also got a short stack of their gluten free blueberry pancakes. While I appreciate the offering, these were dry and mostly tasteless. Desperately needed the butter and syrup. In this case, I chose it because it was close to the hotel of some visiting friends, but I also wanted to give them tasty options since we were meeting at lunch. Presentation was great but there was nothing to die for... Ambiance was cool. Typical of a southern-style restaurant with a Baltimore accented theme on the menu, anchoring the decor in true MD pride. I should have known by the photos in the booth though and the lack of any down-home Southern faces in the space that this was not what I thought. I ordered the "Get You Grits" with Blackened Salmon and Fried Green Tomatoes. It had a remoulade-like based, also. While this dish had so much potential, it fell flat with overcooked salmon, grainy grits and soggy fried green tomatoes. This is not your mama and 'nems Southern fare but it was edible.My mimosa was good. Servers were cool. Luz was very attentive and handled our service with care. I will note that the restrooms are not in the restaurant but in the adjoining building. The wait was not long and we were seated with 20 minutes. We are, we drank, and we left. The hot honey deviled eggs were really good -- a little under seasoned but made for a good bite. Entrees, although a large portion, were underwhelming. I got the caesar wrap which tasted like romaine tossed in lemon juice, and my boyfriend got the pulled pork grilled cheese which was decent, but one note flavor-wise. The hubby ordered their pancake special which was caramel. The portions are HUGE! Honestly, it's the best stuffed French toast I've ever had. I loved the coconut cream filling. It is very rich but so good! Hubby liked his as well. I easily could have been persuaded to return the next morning but alas we gave another place closer to our hotel a try.
