Before leaving and while on our way, we checked their website a few times and their closing time was listed as 4:00 p.m. Do you think anyone from inside could've popped out to explain the mix-up? My husband was so initially turned off upon ordering that he just ordered an English muffin and a side of bacon. I got an iced coffee and it tasted strange. I only had a few sips. It was gross. I have dined here twice now. As others have mentioned you order at the registers, and then someone brings your food to your table. Since you don't have a dedicated waitress, it's a little hard to flag someone down when you need something . At our last visit, I tried to get an egg white/eggbeaters omelette, and that was not an option. Used to be such a great spot to go with the kids, it was a weekly visit for us!! We loved to go grab a later breakfast and get candy on the way out. However ever since the C-vid times, their need to make a buck outshined the food and nothing has returned to the quality it once was. Traveling back home we decided to call in a breakfast sandwich as we had a schedule to follow. We were 5 minutes away and the sandwich and home fries was ready just as we arrived. They packaged it well and even had ketchup without having to ask. I generally do not eat breakfast sandwiches but I have to say it was amazing- it was all fresh and the pot home fries were great too! I wish I could break this up into two reviews. The food was 5 stars which Is the only reason I gave 4 stars. First off, they do not/will not make an egg white omelette which honestly I haven't heard that since 1996. Our server was really quite awful. Perhaps they were just having a bad day. So as she took our breakfast order, we pointed this out and she said she couldn't bring the coffee until she put our order in. Ok??? We finally see her behind the counter quite a while later and my husband waves to her and says "coffee" while pointing at his cup in an almost forgiving tone, like sorry to bother you. She has a little freak out and grabs a coffee cup from a stack very abruptly and almost knocks over a bunch of cups and angrily half fills it and slams it on our table and mumbles "I was trying to take care of my customer at the counter". Mind you, everyone else had their drink for over 10 mins and it wasn't busy. I saw our 4 plates come out and watched them sit under the heating lamp for about 10 mins. Tristan seemed to not want to deal with them. She bagged up a to go order and the people weren't even there yet to pick it up. She then served another order that came out after ours. She finally serves us andThe food was very good! Some of the best home fries I've ever had!! She never came back to check on us until we were almost done. My husband ordered beans and asked her about it and she gets snippy and looks on her little notebook and flips though if and says no you didn't order beans. There's 4 of us we all heard him order beans. No apology, just a no you didn't order beans. No would you like some beans. Just needed some salt. Everyone else seem to enjoy their food which included a ham and cheese omelette and bacon/american cheese omelette. I can't believe I'm writing this to be honest. I've been visiting Miss Wakefield with my family for as long as I can remember. I have never had a problem there until today. I admit I haven't been up to the mountains since about 2017, so expecting things to be the same isn't quite realistic. Nevertheless, this place has gone so far downhill that it is absolutely astounding. I came here with my partner and was ecstatic to show him this place as it was a big part of my childhood. I noticed they changed the entrance and you now enter through the country store. OK, no big deal. I almost automatically went and sat down like I'd always done as a child, only for one of the serving staff to inform us (not so kindly) that we have to order food through the country store and pay ahead. I was super embarrassed and apologized for assuming. When we backtracked to the store to order, they directed us to paper menus on the counter to look through. I ordered my usual grilled cheese and was happy to see they still have glass bottles of soda. But I was really disappointed with the lack of homemade pie and lack of service. Not to mention my grilled cheese was served on a paper plate with approximately 3 pickle slices and nothing else. No fries, chips, etc. Nothing. The sandwich was just like I remembered, don't get me wrong. My partner also enjoyed his meal and it was at least served on a real plate, but I am sorely disappointed with the turn this place has taken. This used to be a staple during my visits to the White Mountains on the way to and from, but I honestly don't think I'll be back. (Also, they expected a tip for doing almost nothing. I drive by the Miss Wakefield Diner every weekend at about 4AM when I am on my way to the mountains. Sadly, it's too early. Finally, I woke up late and got there when they opened. I couldn't wait to give it a try. The waitress was super nice and brought me coffee immediately. In fact, the coffee was great- rich and fresh! It really hit the spot. The menu at the Miss Wakefield is so huge that I couldn't really decide what to try. After some thought, I went with the biscuits and gravy. It was probably not the best decision. The biscuits themselves were good and the scrambled eggs were cooked perfectly. Fortunately, my waitress kept up with the coffee and entertaining chat, probably since I was one of only three people in the restaurant at this early hour. The 4-star rating is definitely her doing! Unfortunately, the gravy was quite pasty. Many people my think that all sausage gravy is pasty, LOL, but this was exceedingly so. My other disappointment was with the home fries. I was expecting a flavorful tender potato chunk, but these were bone dry with no residual grease or oil on them. They looked almost like some packaged frozen steak fries were cut into 1/2" pieces and baked dry. They were also completely bland, without any spice visible at all. Strange. I really wanted to love it here. Still, the delicious coffee, adequate eggs, and nice waitress are good enough reason for me to re-visit the Miss Wakefield. On the first visit, my sandwich bread was so hard that it was not even chewable. It was like weapons-grade rye. We had breakfast here on our way home to Massachusetts. The people are friendly (staff and patrons). There are clearly some regulars who come in there. But we are not local and were made to feel very at home. The servers were great, they were accurate with our orders (is that too much to ask these days?), and super friendly. I really got a kick out of the wooden moose in front of the diner. Unfortunately, some morons let their children HANG on the moose antlers, and they broke off. Not smart! So there are different stages of repair going on. C'mon, people. This is a wooden structure that is the signature of this diner. Someone made that! It took someone a long time to make that. And $$! Does everything have to be a jungle gym because you probably need to keep your kid on a leash? Wait, that's mean. Maybe a leash should be used on the parents. Anyway, the food was fine. Diner food. I love this place! My family has a house in Acton, ME, and we always make a point of driving to Sanbornville to the Miss Wakefield when we're up there. I order the same thing every time I come here- chocolate pancakes, home fries, and a Diet Coke. DELICIOUS! The food is really cheap, and the service is pretty fast. I love the little attached gift shop as well- I always end up buying something really adorable (that I don't even remotely need). Also- I love the moose out front!
