I had Mission Auto Care, 823 Mission St, Santa Cruz, perform a routine Smog Check on my vehicle today. They charged me $80.00. When I returned home, I looked up California law. A Smog Check service cannot charge over $50.00 for a routine Smog Check, however they are allowed to charge more for the certificate, like around $10. Mission Auto Care will rip you off if they think you are distracted or uninformed. Unfortunately I was both when I brought them my car. read more

Had my 1997 Toyota Tacoma Smog Checked here a while ago and they were fast and friendly (no appointment needed). Just called to have a different vehicle Smog Checked and wanted to use the "coupon" listed on the Yelp page but was told that they do not honor the coupons. These guys re built my engine on my 2007 Subaru Forester. They hooked me up with a good price and texted me updates the whole time . They explained the problems they were fixing really clearly and kept the old parts in a box so I could see what they replaced . I like these guys despite their limited English and strong accents makes it a little challenging to communicate. They have been doing my smog check and oil change work for a few years now. They always try to fit me in right away, and the work gets done fast. My repair mechanic is all the way over on the East Side so I bring my car to these guys for anything small. Shady garage. Don't take your car there. I stopped by to get a smog, the guys working there seemed nice. But then they talked in their own language behind my back. Felt odd and uncomfortable. They then proceeded to smog test my car. Their computer failed to communicate with my truck, it came back saying invalid data from the ODB. I had no check engine light and the truck runs excellent. They ran the test a couple more times, hooking odd things to the car battery, bringing other ODB2 readers over that showed my car had no error codes. They then said they can't test my vehicle. They said if I want to pay $90 they can run a diagnostics on the car. I said, that's a possibility. I then said is it ok if I drive around and come back and re-test. I also wanted to pull the battery, reset the computer on my car, and drive the car to try and help the test. They said that was ok and to come back later in the day. I then drove home, checked my ground connection on my battery and made that better. Seemed a little loose. I also found online at the CA Smog board that my particular vehicle was known to have issues with the smog machines, that they are to just ensure that the check engine light works on the car and it does not stay on after the engine is running. So with that I brought my computer and car back to Mission Auto Care to have it retested. I talked to them and said that my vehicle is identified in the CA Smog bulletin as a known vehicle that has issues with connecting successfully to the smog test computer and to just follow the CA Smog Board's recommendation of checking the check engine light and going from there. They said they did, and that was where it was having the problem. I questioned that since the light illuminates with key on and goes off after the car runs, showing that its working. No codes are given when the computer is read, so I questioned this. I said could you please re-run the test, I made the grounds better and feel It might go through and run this time. They then said they will have to charge me now, and made up some BS saying that each time they fire up the machine they get charged for it which is total BS! There is a screen that says upload the results, I've had other shops test until the issue is resolved. Some say these machines update often and won't work on cars that they use to. In my case the CA Smog Board noted my vehicle was not ODBII compliment with their tests hence the errata that they wanted the inspector to move on to the check engine light / check engine "bulb test". Anyways I've just taken my truck to another garage who are competent with cars. I discussed what happened, showed them the online errata from the CA Smog Board talking about my vehicle having issues, he said he has dealt with these types of issues / cars before and knows how to run the test correctly. With that I would question Mission Auto Care's expertise with working on your car. It appears they can not operate a simple smog machine that has prompts to follow, nor to follow up on simple erratas released to professionals to do their job properly. Mission Auto Car also wasted my time. | Beware. read more

The workers are friendly, yes they're multilingual and will probably speak their native tongue around you so try not to take it so personally. read more

*1 YEAR UPDATE* owner contacted me in attempt to scare me into removing this review. He claims that they performed services on my car for FREE when I have the receipts to prove it was not. He also said I was compensated more than my car's worth (which is a lie) so I should take the review down. Is this the type of mechanic you want to entrust your car with? I KNOW I WOULDNT!!! NEVER AGAIN. DO NOT USE THIS SHOP!! MY CAR WAS STOLEN WHILE BEING REPAIRED AT THIS SHOP ON DECEMBER 15TH 2016!! Let me let you all know that I am an avid yelper! The yelp reviews were what initially drew me to this shop but where do I even begin. Well to start, my car had a check engine light problem along with an overheating problem. I took it into this shop and paid $222 to fix the issue. I tried to drive the car when the repair was done and it was still overheating! So I took it back to Mission Auto and then the next day, I get a call from the owner saying that my vehicle was stolen! The mechanics left my keys in the ignition and due to their negligence, a thief was able to run right into the car and drive off! The car hood was still open and all. I don't believe for a second that they were watching my car carefully otherwise this would not have been able to happen. The car was stolen in BROAD DAYLIGHT (around 12 in the afternoon) and this repair shop is on a busy street!! INCREDIBLY CARELESS MECHANICS. Their insurance is also a pain to deal with! To top it off, THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED EVENT. I had a friend who's car was ALSO STOLEN FROM THE SAME SHOP! PLEASE reconsider and use a different auto shop! read more

I was on my way to head back home from santa cruz and my car was over heated. Luckily i can find this place right off the corner. They told me the problem is the radiator and tell me to come back in 2hrs. So i walked to the beach and come back in 2hrs. Mission Auto Care is awesome!! The guys here are great mechanics and provide top notch service. I just brought my Audi in for a smog check at 4:30pm on a Friday (after being turned away from another place because it was "too late") and luckily these guys were happy to help me out. Super grateful to find this hidden gem of an auto shop on the Westside (conveniently located right on Mission, just a few mins from downtown, attached to a gas station). And another lady came in after me to get her oil changed, and when she realized they were closing in less than 30 minutes, she said that she might be able to keep her car there overnight so they could work on it in the morning- but they said "don't worry, we'll do it for you right now!" which I thought was super cool and nice of them. And back to the smog check- it couldn't have gone smoother or been any easier! They hooked up the Audi as soon as I arrived, Tony ran the tests, and I was done in about 20 mins- for $58, an extremely fair price, especially considering the convenience of being able to go in on a Friday afternoon right after I called them and then walking out with a smog certificate, all within less than a half hour time span. The gentlemen that work at this place are the tops! They are so kind, patient and respectful, but best of all they are really knowledgeable. They worked hard to get my old car to pass the smog tests over the years. Many years ago, they advised me to get certain items fixed (inexpensively) but of course I ignored their advice. It cost me a lot more money at another shop and I believe the repairs would have been done better at Mission Auto Center. So thankful we happened upon this shop! On a road trip to the beach, my car broke down in the intersection right next to the shop. Without hesitation (even with a ton of traffic nearby and as the shop was closing, forcing them to stay late!) one of the mechanics helped us push my car into the station. We are so lucky we broke down here because they allowed us to keep my car (and our kayaks on the rack on top) in their garage for safe keeping overnight. The diagnosed and fixed the problem promptly the next day. Tony was the mechanic who worked on the car and took a lot of time to explain the problem and how he fixed it when we picked it up. Went to these guys because of their good Yelp reviews, but they ended up wasting three days of my time. They were completely taking shots in the dark and were replacing parts for my car that didn't need to be replaced. They told me to come test drive my car and when I showed up and my van was completely dismantled and when I asked for some communication about what's going on with the car the mechanic flat out told me "don't worry about it". Also, they all around are terrible at communicating with you. Found out from the younger worker that it's under new ownership now. Must be why the Yelp reviews are misleading all speaking of mechanics that are no longer working there. They even tried to send me off with a car that still had problems and tried to blame my driving rather than the engine (my car was stalling while driving). THREE days of work and I ended up having them put all my parts back into my car so I could go to a new shop, they were at least cool about giving me a full refund. Went to another shop and had it fixed in 5 hours and I was on my way home after being stuck in Santa Cruz 4 days longer than planned. read more
