I knew very little about this BBQ restaurant named Mission BBQ, but by the time I went in and came out, I not only was full of having eaten an amazingly delicious BBQ meal, but of the knowledge of what this restaurant is all about. The mission of Mission BBQ is "To serve authentic barbecue and honor those who serve the country." They believe that barbecue is a quintessential American food. And they serve their food to honor those who protect and serve this country. When I arrived at the restaurant I was thrilled to enter its doors and when I did I discovered something that is rarely seen. Their Mission Statement was coming alive through the patriotic decor of the restaurant and through the "servant's heart" of their employees. It is said that actions speak louder than words. Well this is the case with this business, through all the things they do to appreciate and support the military, firefighters, police, and first responders; as well as their families. Through how their employees treated me, I could honestly say that they truly put people first. They put the needs of others above their own; and this is the heart of what customer service should be all about and of the American Spirit. I walked to the ordering counter and a young lady warmly greeted me with a smile and when she found out this was my first time there she gladly explained to me about the restaurant, its food, and how to order. She not only made me feel at home, but made me feel proud to be an American. I ordered a plate with Pulled Pork and Brisket with fries, and a Dr Pepper to drink. As soon as my order was ready, my name was called and I went to pick it up. In the meantime I walked around the restaurant observing all the photographs, momentos, and tributes of many local servicemen who had proudly served their country and passed away. Who I think was the manager observed me and came by to meet me and say hello. He too was very friendly and explained to me the restaurant and how their food is prepared daily, and gave me a tour of some of the tributes on the wall explaining who they were. Now as to the food, it was amazingly delicious. I enjoyed the soft and moist pulled pork, the brisket, and the corn bread, together with all the sauces available to try and put on your meats. Since this was my first time there the manager also gave me some other items to try: a little piece of the chicken, the soft brisket, the rib, and to end a Blueberry Cobler. The chicken was moist and tasty, the soft brisket was even better than the regular one and tastier, and the rib was so tender that the meat just rubbed off. I even found out their secret to how they cook their ribs to come out this good. And the Blueberry Cobler; I've had different Coblers before, but this one was out of this world! I highly recommend this restaurant to all those who are reading my review and encourage you to view my photographs because a picture is worth more than a thousand words. Go try this restaurant out, that when you do, you too will become believer!

Stopped here for lunch on our way home. I always enjoy good BBQ and Mission BBQ is one of my favorite places. I always order the yard bird ( 1/2 BBQ chicken) which is so tender and perfectly seasoned. My sides were coleslaw and green beans which were extra. Tender cornbread comes with the meal. Of course many other menu items but the chicken is my favorite. A bunch of different BBQ sauces on the table to choose from. The staff is friendly and accomadating. The atmosphere comfortable. As a matter of fact everyday at noon, patrons are asked to rise and sing the Star Spangled Banner. A very patriotic moment. Prices are reasonable and the BBQ is just great.

I've debated coming to Mission BBQ before on Thanksgiving to find out they're closed which I find odd. The turkey is good but not close to the green beans no contest. They don't really have napkins they have some strange school paper towel. The wall is decorated with photos of people who served if you look close enough I'm on the wall.

God Bless the USA!!! Wish we had this in Greensboro!!!! Our cashier was a little, well, Bless her heart. But the rest of this place was amazing! The story behind the place, the managers, the staff walking around just checking on us , and the the food... The food: Let us give thanks that these poor animals made their way here to fulfill their destiny and become such delicious treats! Thank you food!!! The pulled pork was great! Pulled not chopped. Looked like Pig spaghetti and with the Honey Heat sauce it was.... Wait.... I need a moment.... The Brisket was as good and Juicy as any I've had with a perfect smoke ring and beautiful bark. The sausage I would skip. Tasted like a big stick of slim Jim. However, cover anything here in enough of their sauces and it's pretty yummy. Sides- we had the potato salad!!!!! Mac and Cheese and Peach Cobbler. Paula Dean wishes she has anything this good on her menu. Thank you from a Veteran! You guys make us proud!

Great place! Fast service & tasty food. Great choice of bbq souses. The style is very patriotic honoring veterans, military, and law enforcement while also can feel strong connection to the local community.

Brisket and brisket sandwich.

The brisket is very good. The sandwiches have a lot of meat. It comes with one tiny piece of corn bread. I didn't care for the buns or the cornbread. The soda machines are thick syrupy and splatter all over your hands when dispensing. And they charge around $5 per normal size drink...YIKES! For half a pound of brisket, a brisket sandwich, and two regular drinks came out to $35. It's definitely expensive. It's delicious but on the high side.

Straight to the point, if you want some good bbq, you've come to the right spot. No wonder this restaurant is rated 4.7 stars over 1700 ratings. The food is great compared to a lot of other competing BBQ restaurants. The bbq meat is juicy and doesn't taste dry. They have a wide selection of sauces ~8 and even have a promotion going on for Veterans on Veteran's day, thank you to all who have served and are serving members. Their cornbread, might I add, tastes amazing. This restaurant would have gotten a 5 star review from me if it just had a bigger portion size, the meats pictures totaled to about $11.50, not bad. Last but not least, the atmosphere is very comfortable and homebody-like and the employees are friendly and down for a chat! Taste: 4.5/5 Atmosphere: 5/5 Employees: 5/5 Price: 3.8/5 Final: 4.6/5

The restaurant gives portions of the proceeds to veterans. If you like barbecue, there are lots of choices. Our group tried lots of items. I got a salad, Mac & cheese and greens. The restaurant sells various condiments, which you can try. It was too windy to eat outside. We had fun sitting inside. Vets get free meals. Our friend was in the air force. You can have your photo taken by the tank outside. The staff will print a copy.

Came here recently to pick up some BBQ for the ride home after hiking. We do not live in the area, but really love Mission BBQ. Unfortunately, there is just not one near us in Charlotte. Service during this COVID time was great. Went right in and ordered for take out and they were fast, considering how busy they were in the middle of the afternoon. They had people coming and going with takeout orders, but I never felt unsafe. What we got: 1 1/2 pound pulled chicken - this is our favorite, very good and properly seasoned. Pulled pork - not my favorite pulled pork, but it is still very good Cheese Sausage - love the cheesy sausage, which is good because it has a nice spicy kick to it. Pork Ribeye - meh, I was disappointed in this. Just needed more. Luckily it is only a seasonal item so we know not to get this one again. Potato Salad - what is this crack seasoning? This potato salad has some sort of seasoning that is so amazingly good! Wish we got a larger portion, but we had not had their potato salad before. Mac and Cheese - I love mac and cheese and while I've had theirs before and would continue to get it, it is not the best. It is not bad either, it's just like the pork in this instance. I've had much better elsewhere, but I can still enjoy it here. Peach Cobbler - AMAZING! I wish this were not a seasonal item, but I love the peach, love the gooeyness of the filling, and overall sweetness of this dessert. We've had it before, so we stocked up to bring some home to freeze. We should have gotten more... Love Mission BBQ, not my favorite BBQ place, but they know how to compete and give some great tasting food items.

Inside, it's all worn wood tables, checkered paper, and the low hum of conversation over country music. The walls might have a few local photos or license plates, but nothing fancy--this place lets the food do the talking. The pulled pork sandwich is the star. It comes piled high, the meat slow-smoked for hours until it practically falls apart. Each bite hits with that perfect balance--smoky, tender, just a little crispy on the edges. Then there's the sauce situation. You've got options lined up on the table--sweet and sticky and tangy vinegar-based. Half the fun is mixing and matching until you land on your perfect combo. On the side, golden hush puppies arrive hot and crisp--crunchy on the outside, soft and slightly sweet inside. The fries are perfectly salted, and just begging to be dipped in leftover sauce. And dessert? Banana pudding, served cold in a simple cup with layers of creamy vanilla pudding, sliced bananas, and soft vanilla wafers that have soaked just enough to melt into everything. It's rich without being heavy--the kind of dessert that feels like it came straight from someone's grandmother's kitchen. It's not fancy, it's not trendy--but it's exactly what you want when you're craving real, honest BBQ.

When doing my research for this review I found out that the long-time Roanoke residents, Whit and Lauren Ellerman, the owners of Crystal Spring Grocery, are also the owners of the River and Rail Restaurant, located on the same block as Crystal Spring Grocery. The Ellermans clearly have an eye for recognizing the possibilities of vacant buildings and the talents of others and a vision of how they can come up with something as wonderful as this establishment. Gourmet grocery store and Cafe is a short definition of what Crystal Spring Grocery Company is all about. But I must go more in depth of what makes it so special and unique beside being gourmet. First of all I was very impressed with the interior design of the building space. Simple yet beautiful in its simplicity. I particularly loved its shiny whitish gray floors, and the green furniture and design, throughout the Grocery as well as Cafe. Also, I was very impressed with the windows and lighting treatment of the place. Second, I was very impressed with the quality and organization of the food items and wines, in the Grocery area. It was very significant to me because as I was growing up I learned to eat Okra from my grandmother's home cooking. And I can't think of no better way to describe this place as this. After being awarded the Triad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, I decided that it would be appropriate this year to go back to this restaurant and write a follow-up review, since my initial review was one of my reviews that contributed to me obtaining this highly esteemed Award. Pok-E-Joe's has become one of the most loved BBQ restaurants in Vinton, Roanoke, and nearby cities and towns. And key to its success is their quality meats and slow smoking cooking process that lasts for hours, turning their meats into award-wining Southern culinary masterpieces. Today, when I arrived a friendly young lady greeted me at the Host's station and after giving me a warm welcome, and inquiring as to where I wanted to be seated, took me to a comfortable booth next to the window. There I enjoyed looking over the menu with all the unique and delicious Southern BBQ foods such as the Pulled Pork, the USDA Prime Brisket, the Smoked Sliced Turkey, and others. Not long afterwards, my very friendly server, Jessica, came by with a big smile to greet me and take my order. I ordered an Iced Lemonade to drink. And to eat I ordered the Build Your Tray. I first asked for the Brisket Tips, which I had heard so much of, but they didn't have any today. So I picked my meats for the tray 1/4 lb of Pulled Pork and 1/4 lb of USDA Prime Brisket. For my sides I ordered Fried Okra, a Side Salad with Blue Cheese dressing, and Straight Cut Fries. The tray also included 3 Hushpuppies. I also wanted to include in this review their Pok-E-Cuban Sandwich, so I also ordered this with the idea of taking home the leftovers to eat tomorrow. My server Jessica did an excellent job taking my order, seeing that it was delivered, and checking on me at the right times. Everything was to good to the point of being exquisite. The flavor of the meats were out of this world, and they were so tender and juicy. The Salad was made with fresh ingredients and tasted refreshing with the Blue Cheese dressing. The Fried Okra and Hushpuppies were magnificent. And the Fries were the perfect cut and fried to perfection. As to the Pok-E-Cuban Sandwich, it surpassed all the others that I have had, with the slow smoked Ham and Pulled Pork, pickles, Swiss Cheese, and their house-made Spicy Mustard. All this, and at a very reasonable price. The ambiance of the restaurant was clean, warm, and relaxed. And contributed to the amazing diving experience. For dessert I had a Chocolate Chip Cookie Bowl Sundae. It was the dessert of the day and tasted amazing. Even the quality of the Vanilla Ice-cream was tops and creamy. This restaurant is very detail oriented, with fine food, cooked the right way, and provided with excellent customer service. And this makes for an extraordinary dining experience.
