We are Mission BBQ Junkies. We've literally been to half of the locations in the chain. The reason why we come here is because we always find consistency and the same great taste no matter where we are while we are traveling. For some reason this location seems to fall a bit short. We've been here two times now and both times we had the same experience. The barbecue here does not stand toe-to-toe with more than a dozen other locations that we've been to. I'm not sure why but it seems to be the case here. However, in Roanoke we're finding quality barbecue can be a chore this location is still worth coming to. You'll find a large, roomy dining area and friendly staff that go out of their way to make you feel wanted. On the other hand we come for meat and the last few times it's been just okay. We always go with three meat combos so we can try several meats and decide which one we like best for the next time. Well the turkey was good we can't say the same for the pulled pork or the brisket. Both were extremely dry and overcooked. Normally, these meats are excellent at this now fairly large chain. We also tried the baby back ribs and they were way over cooked nor did the meat fall off the bone. This is not what management expects from this chain. The sides weren't off. The baked beans were well below average and the normally awesome french fries were mushy. This is a major disappointment because they have absolutely amazing seasoning for their french fries. I'm hoping this is just bad luck and we hit it on a bad day. However having visited twice in the several months span while driving through it seems like it's the norm. Don't get me wrong the barbecue is going to be better than places like Dickey's and Smokey Bones but compared to what this chain normally serves this location is falling short. I ate lunch at Mission BBQ while working in Roanoke in August 2019. Had an AWESOME experience. This place is all about honoring military and first responders. The decor is rustic all American, with tons of military, Sheriff, Police and Fire memorabilia, pictures, patches, and items. Almost like a Heroes museum. I really enjoyed just looking at all the items. This is a cafeteria style restaurant. Order your food, pick it up when it's ready. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The food was awesome. I had a thin sliced turkey sandwich and my friend ordered some BBQ. Best turkey sandwich I ever ate. All of the sides were also awesome. We had a banana pudding desert was incredible. Portion size was huge, and the prices low, especially considering the amount of food and quality. Mission BBQ is reason alone to plane a trip to Roanoke. I travel for work and regularly look for local bbq spots. The food here was absolutely delicious. I'm not much of a sauce person, but if that is your thing they have literally every style of sauce you could imagine. This location had the absolute best service I have had at any restaurant ever. Jody the manager was so friendly and went out of his way to check on everyone. He sat and chatted with me periodically while making his rounds. The ribs are excellent. 5ribs is a good size. 10 ribs you can split for about $18. All sides are good. On each table is 6 different sauces to choose from. Each is good. I combined a few and made my own combo. Not a bad idea. They support veterans so for an extra $2 you get a bigger drink and can keep the cup. Not the best, but not the worst either. I had their brisket sandwich with a side of mac and cheese and lemonade which came to a total of about $12. I don't think the price was equivalent to the food given, but perhaps location does drive the price a bit. The meat was kind of dry, but they do provide you 6 kinds of different sauces to try out. You have to order at the cashier and then you wait for a short period of time (about 10 minutes or less) and they call out your name and your food is ready. Environment was clean and the constant service-driven restaurant was refreshing to see. They picked up your trays when you're done with your food. The sweet tea and lemonade is delicious. Y'all could fool me that this is a chain in a dozen states. It tastes like great local BBQ. Plus it stands for a good cause. Plus there doesn't appear to be any tipping (man, I really hope I got that right, or I'll be embarrassed), which means they pay their employees decent wages. These are all good things. I had a combo of burnt ends and pulled pork. Both were a bit dry and flavorless, but hey, I love slathering my food in sauce, and here you have six! to choose from. I can't say any of them were oh wow! favorites, but there were some good ones. There's even a bottle of "NC vinegar" on the table if that's your thing. The cheesy potatoes side was a great choice. I should have passed on the collard greens - I was expecting meat, and they didn't seem to have any. Of course, I didn't ask, so shame on me. The sweet tea is the Southern truly sweet kind. The one downside I found was limited dessert selection. You can get a brownie, or whatever their dessert of the week is (in this case, coconut cream, which doesn't do it for me). They don't have any standbys, whether pecan pie or banana pudding. Really, it shouldn't be hard to keep a tub of banana pudding on the menu. Oh well. I go to BBQ for the meats, and the meats are working hard here. On a recommendation from a local, and he really sang their praise, I stopped into Mission BBQ for lunch. It was a lot of hype and not only did they live up to it, but went above and beyond on everything! Read on to see how. Located in the upper section of the Towers shopping center is the Mission BBQ. They are indeed on a mission! The lower entrance to the shopping center is marked by a 50's space age sign that still stands. Really cool to see. Outside the restaurant is a huge former military vehicle painted flat black, sporting a vanity plate that says bambam2! There is plenty of parking and plenty of room to move. There is some outdoor seating too. Inside you will find rustic decoration and a heavy military theme. You go down a long hallway type area to order, and then pay. The menu board is on the wall behind the cashier. The place was super clean, all around. As I had never been here before I was a little unsure of the system. A cashier came out from behind the counter, waved us down, explained the menu and ordering system with a smile and to the point. Super friendly service. The choices are simple. You can get a plate or sandwiches with your choice of meat, smoked in house. Then a choice of combos for side items. The menu board was easy to read and super simple. My choice was the beef brisket plate, 2 side combo with fries and mac n cheese. It cost $14 with a drink and tax. I head down to fill up my drink from the cool retro fountains, and find a toolbox with straws, lids, and other items! How cool! In no time flat my name was called and the food was ready! There were huge slabs of beef brisket, a pile of fries, cornbread, and a small bowl of mac n cheese, all loaded on a military style metal tray. They have an assortment of sauces on every table so you can find one that suits your flavor. The meat was tender, flavorful, with just enough smoke. It was indeed tender enough to cut with a plastic fork! The mac n cheese was also excellent. Nicely done, creamy and rich, with crumbles on top. The fries were cooked up nice with seasoning salt on top for a little bite. Cornbread was fluffy and also pretty tasty. Portion sizes are large, and I enjoyed every bite! Several times someone came by and asked me if everything was ok, or if I needed anything. Service was amazing. But thats not the end... My friend ordered food and his card was declined. We've all been there. Meanwhile his food was fixed and out front. He informs me of the problem. I offer to pay. He refuses. So he sits down without the food. A few minutes later the manager comes out and says "Here's your food. I've had the same thing happen to me. I'm not worried about that. Go ahead and eat, and next time you're in the area you can pay then. Even if that's a year from now. Its ok. Enjoy your food." Talk about service. Man. Hats off to this place. In this day and age who tells you to have food when you dont have money, He's not worried about it?? I was beyond blown away by this place. 5 stars plus 5!
