I'd never had Mission BBQ before, so I ordered a brisket sandwich. After tax, it came out to about $15. The sandwich had three decent-sized pieces of brisket, but the largest piece was an end piece that was overcooked, even though I asked for the moist option. Half of the sandwich was literally like trying to eat a hockey puck. The flavor was mediocre at best and nothing really memorable, when you're paying $15 for a moist brisket sandwich and it's not moist at all, it's pretty outrageous. I was visiting from out of town for work and found this place. OMG, the food was so good. I tried a meat sampler with pulled pork and the jalapeño cheddar sausage and add Mac n cheese and baked beans, everything was fantastic and flavorful. All the sauces available were also really good and authentic for the region it was from. Additionally, the staff was super friendly and gave recommendations and made sure I was happy. First time here, and was really impressed for chain BBQ. They take great pride in their product and are willing to offer descriptions, samples and answer any questions. This is an order at the counter type of place with different meats and sides to choose from. The employee explained that everything is made fresh and prepared from scratch. They don't have microwaves or freezers on the premises. The brisket was delicious. As was the sausage, chicken and macaroni and cheese. The stand out for me was the pulled pork which was the style I like- well charred, pulled to perfection and served WITHOUT sauce. Ok, so a cafeteria style bbq place is not exactly a 5 star restaurant--but for what they do and what we had--5 star for sure! I don't like fatty meat, but I love brisket, here, you have a choice of lean or 'moist' and I choose lean. Not one once that I needed to trim off, but it wasn't dried out--it was well seasoned and DELICIOUS!! Mac n cheese was great and the Cole slaw was fresh and a generous portion. From the moment walking in the door to walking out, was probably one of the best dining experiences we've had! It was our first time here and we were unfamiliar with the ordering process. Brady was awesome explaining everything and taking our order. Our order was up before we got our drinks. Everyone raved about their selections! And we're completely satisfied. It didn't end there, Corey while clearing our tables engaged in conversation, telling us about the business and other menu items. When he found out it was our first time here, he said he wanted to do something special for us. He came back with blueberry cobbler, (which was outstanding) and cards for a free sandwich on a return trip. MISSION BBQ opened its doors for business on September 11, 2011 by 2 friends honoring soldiers and first-responders. It's a serve-less dining style. We were greated as soon as we walked in and asked if we needed any assistance. I like that you have the option to customize/add-on to your meal. So I got the 2 meats, cornbread (didn't try) with one side and a drink. My side was macaroni and cheese. My friend had a coupon for a sandwich and fries so ordered their pulled pork. We choose our seats. Our food was ready less than 10 minutes. On the table there are 6 different sauces and vinegar. My favorite was the Tupelo Honey Heat. All the meats we ordered weren't hot but they were moist. Unfortunately the mac n cheese was a fail. I also tried my friend's cole slaw. Another fail. I was just eating to eat not excited like I should be. A employee kept coming around to ask if everything was ok. Which was nice. She was surprised when she asked me if I wanted to wrap up the mac n cheese/slaw and I said no. All the while there my focus should have been on the food but honestly it wasn't. The whole restaurant is decorated with law enforcement/military pictures and paraphernalia and I could not get over the lack of diversity that was displayed. This is a one and done for me. I wanted to come back and update my review for the better. I have eaten here a few more times since my last review and I have to say, they were better experiences. My most recent visit I had a pork BBQ sandwich that was piled high with moist, delicious pork. And the cheesey potatoes?! TO DIE FOR!!! I actually bought the largest container I could to take home. I've tried other Mission BBQ locations before, so we decided to give this one a try since we were in Wilkes-Barre. Convenient hours and location near a lot of shops with a lot of parking. Service was friendly and fast. I'm a big fan of the chopped brisket and pulled pork with the Memphis sauce. My wife usually gets the salmon or turkey with the Alabama sauce (white). I was looking for a quick tasty meal while traveling for work. I found this place on yelp and it looked really good so I asked the ladies at the hotel desk if it was any good and they said yes and it was close to the hotel so I figured I would give it a shot. It was exactly what I was looking for. I ordered the two meat platter so I could try the brisket and sausage. I was asked if I want my brisket moist or lean and I chose moist because I like my meat fatty. I chose regular for the sausage but they offer a jalapeño as well. For a side I got the cold slaw. The platter also includes tasty corn bread. My food was ready in under two minutes. I asked if they had a horseradish sauce for my brisket and they did. This is behind the counter so make sure you ask for it. At the table there were 6 sauces to experiment with. I liked the KC Classic and Smoky Mountain. While I was eating the manager Mike stopped and asked how everything was. I told him I have never been to a mission BBQ and he asked how I was enjoying my experience and recommended a few of his favorites for the future. A couple of minutes later he brought me a delicious banana pudding dessert and a coupon for a free sandwich on the house and thanked me for trying mission BBGQ! Outstanding job Mike. The shuttered Dickey's BBQ was just down the road from Mission BBQ. I thought Dickey's was OK but I was never too compelled to visit very often and apparently everyone else felt likewise. Neither of these counter-service fast-ish food joints is going to give you anything resembling a gritty down-south BBQ experience but you don't expect the Elmer's Glue-encased pasta at Olive Garden to replicate Tuscany either. Mission BBQ's transparent and wholly pandering branding shtick centers on "honoring" military types and a host of adjacent positions like cops and firefighters and first-responders in general. It's a bit creepy and crass even if they hedge their bets a bit and somehow refrain from putting up a picture of Donald Trump over the counter. I never met anyone in the military who was all that crazy about the orange one but I'm more than willing to sidestep politics if Chik-Fil-A has something decent to offer. (The first Mission BBQ opened its doors on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 by savvy marketers from Under Armour and Outback Steakhouse. If you don't think there is some boss-level crass exploitation going on here, you are much less cynical than moi.) All that aside, Mission BBQ was surprisingly good. My first visit, I got a brisket entree and fries. The ten dollar brisket portion was not overwhelming but in retrospect, it was more than enough when paired with a big pile of decent fries. There are some impressively gargantuan Chevy van-sized ovens in the open kitchen and that must mean some serious stuff is going down. The service was friendly and snappy and we got our grub quickly. The space is bright and clean and the tables sported a variety of sauces and condiments. Like General MacArthur, I shall return. Just stopped in to Mission BBQ Wilkes Barre, PA. I always have a tough time finding places that have gluten free items. I was thrilled to find that not only do they have gluten free items but they have a whole menu online with many gf items from which to choose. When ordering I started by telling the woman that I was ordering gluten free. She not only indicated gf while entering the order into their computer system she also verbally called it out to the kitchen staff. She also made sure to tell me that all the BBQ sauces were gf EXCEPT the TEXAS TWANG. So stay away from that one! For those of you who are GF and crave french fries...this place has got your back! Their fries are GF since they have a dedicated frier which is used solely for french fries! Hurray!!!! They were excellent!!! I ordered the 2 Meat Sampler in which I chose the brisket and the sliced turkey...both were very good! I also added two sides which were the cole slaw (also dairy free) and the baked beans. My husband had the pulled pork sandwich, mac & cheese and the fries. I shared his fries. Everything was excellent! So happy to add Mission BBQ to the list of places I can safely eat. With the recent closing of Dickey's BBQ in Wilkes-Barre we thought we'd try the new face on the block when Mission opened on Mundy St. I'd like to start by saying I enjoy BBQ food of all varieties but Mission is not going to be getting my business anymore than that one visit. I got the food to go and though the wait wasn't too long, when I ate it I could understand why. The food was way too expensive for the portions and the quality of the food. The meat was alright, I tried the turkey, brisket and pulled pork definitely not what you'd expect from a place that exclusively sold BBQ food. The sides were also fine, nothing to write home about, the corn bread and the fries were good but that's about it. The sauces were also disappointing, I thought since they had five or six sauce options that I'd at least find one that I'd like, but no they were all disappointing too. If you said their normal barbecue sauce was just colored ketchup I'd believe you, it had no flavor besides an overwhelming ketchup taste. The underwhelming taste of almost all of their products plus the overwhelming bitter taste of shelling out $50 for two people to have dinner and be hungry three hours later is why I will not be going back. Just wow! This place hits it out of the park on so many levels. Service is welcoming and friendly. Atmosphere is warm and comfortable. And the food (refer to the first line of this review). Amazing. I've got a serious weakness for barbecue in general and brisket specifically. Unfortunately I've spent much of the last 20 years repeatedly disappointed by places that promised brisket heaven but delivered a dry, sad substitute. So I approached Mission BBQ with a fair deal of scepticism. This place gives you the option of lean or moist brisket. Their moist brisket is simply the best brisket I've had in 20 years. And the runner up isn't even close. Absolutely melt in your mouth. I've been back three more times to test the consistency (I should keep testing this a few times a week) and every time it is dynamite. If it was only the brisket that was this exceptional they would have gained a customer for life. But, so far, everything I've tried has been exceptional. I've had the mac and cheese with big chunks of brisket in it, pulled pork, sausage, ribs, green beans, cornbread etc. Mission BBQ goes out of their way to honor veterans of the armed services, law enforcement, emergency personnel etc. They found out I had been in the service and, halfway through my meal, showed up at my table with a complementary cobbler to thank me for my service. If you are anywhere near this amazing restaurant you owe it to yourself to indulge in some of the best barbecue you will ever eat. read more

My wife and I and my step son stop in here yesterday. It is a cool place inside it is military themed. My wife had the brisket sandwich and step son had the turkey sandwich and I had ribs and my wife and I had the Mac and Cheese. My wife's brisket was good as I had a bit. He said his turkey was good. And my ribs were good fall off the bone what I like. Our Mac and Cheese i think the star of the show. I was very happy with that wish it was bigger. Now the sauce I really didn't care for. Great atmosphere, good food, horrible work staff. I entered the establishment about an hour and a half prior to closing time. The employees were too busy cleaning up and joking with each other to greet me. The cashier was singlehandedly the rudest and least inviting human I have ever came into contact with. Received burnt, cold crumbs of French fries. The employee cleaning the dining room took our plates without asking if we were done eating.
