Recently visited this place, first time eating in, and i must say i like the appreciation they show for law enforcement, first responders, etc. Based on the pictures and historic memorabilia thats distributed across the walls of the establishment. I love food and that's no lie. I especially love BBQ and that's no lie. I am a true patriotic American and that's no lie. I have seen the location in ILM and up in Jacksonville and it was finally time to try out Mission BBQ. I was happy and that was no lie! I will say walking in I was a bit overwhelmed looking at the menu. There is a lot going on. I ordered a two meat plate, with pulled pork and lean brisket. I also added mac and cheese and a slice of cornbread came in accompaniment. They have a great line-up of sauces for any BBQ lover! Sweet to Spicy, you name it. I had the Texas Twang and it was perfect! I just moved here this last year from Texas. So, I consider myself having had really gotten a good diversity of BBQ from living there and traveling around the US. The brisket was so unbelievably moist. It fell apart. I was shocked! It was moist and delicious, just the way brisket should be. It had the distinct smokey flavor come through. Wow is all I could think! The brisket alone = 5 Stars! The pulled pork was delicious too. It was a little dry but, still had great flavor and with a little of the Texas Twang, I was much satisfied. The mac and cheese was so gooey and had so much delicious cheese on it. It needed a little more seasoning on it but, it delivers on the cheesy goodness you expect from a legit side. The cornbread was very traditional. I was on the run and got my order to go. So, make sure you grab some butter or honey to go with it. On it's own, it can be a little dry. The inside is a complete rustic American vibe and they support the USO and military branches. As a military family, I sure appreciate this. I look forward to going back to try their ribs and other sides. The atmosphere was very clean and had a great warm welcome to it. Service was flawless and so FAST! I love that they do legit BBQ and the place is so clean! Much appreciated! It was a bit expensive. My meal came out to just over $15. You can't complain though when its great BBQ. I would maybe love to see a lunch special for the price conscientious foody. I'll be back for sure! They also cater too! I landed in Wilmington right around lunch and knew my first meal in NC had to be BBQ. As a KC native, this was my first chance to try some authentic regional food. Holy moly, did this place deliver. First and foremost, the space is awesome. Ample parking, organized ordering process, plenty of seating, and interesting decorations. Mission refers to our armed forces, so the restaurant is filled with stunning memorabilia. We took time to look around after we'd had our meal. But the food -- wow! We had pulled pork sandwiches the first day with beans and potato salad. The meat was flavorful and tender, the entire product unique (you won't find anything like it where I'm from, especially with those vinegar and mustard sauces). You know they don't take shortcuts here. We enjoyed it so much, we came back the next day when we came to Wilmington for beach supplies. We had sausage and sliced brisket (my favorite) and it was the right amount of lean. The corn was stellar this time, too! Follow that up with the fact that we had frienfly service both times, and you have yourself a winner. If you ever want to expand out to Missouri, I'd happily be the first in line! read more

Stopped into Mission the other day and was presently surprised by how good the BBQ and service are here. This place is no thrills really good BBQ with great fixings on the side. Another high point is all the sauces they have, whatever your taste, from Carolina to Georgia, to Memphis, they really do have something for everyone, including a sauce called Alabama White....yes, white BBQ sauce. You really do get the feeling that when it comes to BBQ they have thought of everything, there are quite a few options from plates to sandwiches, as well as multiple types of BBQ, including ribs- even the brisket comes in 2 styles, dry and wet, I prefer the wet but the dry is good and smokey too! Hello Wilmington, hello BBQ! On my last trip to Wilmington I went to two events that were both catered by Mission BBQ. I love me some BBQ, but twice on one short trip? I want variety whilst on vacation, damnit! Boy oh boy was I proven wrong. Screw variety when the food is this good! Now, I'm from Orlando, not the first place you think of for BBQ, I know, but we have a local spot, Four Rivers, that is out of this world! Mission BBQ definitely equals my 4Rivers in Orlando and might even surpass it after more time in business. And like 4Rivers, Mission BBQ has a wonderful background and purpose; to serve those who serve us, including men and women of the military, police force, firefighters, and first responders. Nobel. On to the food! The meats were so tender and juicy and the sides tasted homemade and fresh. OMGTHEMACANDCHEESE! (Throw a hashtag in front of that and BAM, you have yourself a trend. You're welcome.) Another item I was raving about was the BBQ sauce. Their Kansas City Classic was bold and a little spicy, in other words, perfect on a bun with pulled pork and coleslaw! I decided to give Mission BBQ out with an open mind and not based on any of the Yelp reviews. Unfortunately, I have to side with the negative reviews. I tried the brisket and mac & cheese combo. The brisket lacked any flavor at all honestly and most of the pieces were, as Anne Burrell says, "cooked to within an inch of its life". I had to literally smother it in sauce to attempt to bring any moisture and flavor into it. The mac & cheese was mediocre. It was a step up from Kraft, but honestly tasted like Velveeta with some fresh shredded cheese mixed in. I will say that their cornbread and sauces were good. Their employees were also very nice and the service is great. The overall theory/mission statement is great too. Those are the only reason I'm giving it a 2 star. I had definitely hoped for better from a BBQ place here in the south, but definitely can say I was far from impressed. read more

Well, I had great expectations for this place. Not only the service was incredibly slow, and with only one person ahead of me, but the flavor was not good. I ordered the 5 ribs with green beans and baked beans. The only flavor I tasted was from the baked beans. Unfortunately, the ribs and the green beans were almost flavorless. It's a great concept and who wouldn't want to support a business that donates money to our Veterans. That being said, I can honestly say it's not the worst BBQ in Wilmington. Avoid the macaroni and cheese unless you prefer a commercial cheese sauce with elbow macaroni thrown in. I ordered the 2 meat sampler and a side of Mac and cheese, with a drink my total for lunch was right at $15. Stopped by this location just randomly as I was in the store next to it doing some shopping. After a quick yelp check I decided to go in and get 10 bone spare ribs, brisket and some mac n cheese to go. Got a variety of BBQ sauces with it as well. First the location wasn't very busy but it was a Sunday and mid-afternoon so wasn't sure if that had something to do with it, but the shopping center was bustling and with the amount of staff on hand I suspected they were waiting for the storm to hit. Out of everything I got the Ribs were the best part of the meal, very tender and good size ribs too. Nice pieces of bark on it too. The Brisket was just average, I have had better from places like harris teeter but it was in no way bad. I mean I did eat it all. The Mac-N-Cheese was good, but I suspected it was much better when I actually got it, that side dish tends to dry up when you are taking it to do and don't get to eat it for 60-90 minutes. I wouldn't get it again unless I was eating at the restaurant. I will for sure eat here again when and if I am in the area. Need even more reason to try this out? Wow! What a surprise! Soft bbq chicken with great flavor, great coleslaw which is hand made with a half mayo half vinegar base. I didnt like the corn bread or whatever that came with it, but the baked beans with brisket was awesome. Highly recommended. read more

Sometimes it's a 5. Sometimes it's 3. I gave it a four on average. The restaurant is clean and open. The staff is helpful except for the snarly girl who always seems to be on the corner register. The sides are almost always good. The best part of the meal is the six different sauces on the table. Because this is not sloppy, soupy East Carolina barbecue, sauces are required, and they are delicious. The meats are uneven. The best is the pulled pork, but the worst is the pulled pork when they didn't pull it enough and left large hunks of fat in it. The brisket and chicken are more consistent, but they can run dry so be aware of that. The ribs? This isn't Memphis, so they really aren't ribs. Folks in Wilmington love this place because it's the closest thing to real barbecue in town. If you've had BBQ in Nashville, Memphis, KC or Texas. you'll know this place couldn't compete, but hey, when you need some barbecue, close is good enough. read more

My coworker and I stopped by for lunch yesterday and as always the customer service was great and the food was really good. I got the Carolina pulled pork sandwich with fries and baked beans and everything was great,my coworker got the meat sampler with Mac and cheese and pork and beans and he said that the food was ok but not great. Nothing new to say that I haven't said in the past so give mission a chance, it's really good for a chain bbq restaurant. read more

Mission BBQ is not my favorite BBQ place in Wilmington. It's a chain. It capitalizes on patriotism which is a good business model. The food: the BBQ is just alright. Not the worst and not the best. It is however the BEST mac and cheese Iv ever had! They have 7 different BBQ sauce choices and I don't really like a single one of them! The ambiance: like I said, they're American patriots at mission BBQ. They have war stuff and baseball and football gear. It's casual. Lots of seating which is good bc it gets busy in there. The service: service is probably the best part of the whole experience. They're fast, courteous and really helpful. You're allowed to try the BBQ and brisket before you commit to a dish so that's nice. All in all, I don't think I'll be back. I've put a lot of meat from Mission BBQ into my body over past few weeks. THE FOOD: I'm a fan of Mission's brisk & turk. Their turkey is moist and tender with good flavor. I always order the brisket served moist, but you have the option of requesting a lean cut. At your table you'll find 6 sauces, if you're the type who gets sauced at dinner. THE BATHROOMS: The men's bathroom at Mission has been clean during my visits. You have a sink, a urinal and one private stall. The bathroom is decorated with pin-up girl posters. There is one picture that depicts a Friend's era Jennifer Aniston sitting on a couch, it doesn't really go with the theme. Directly above the urinal is that famous Farrah Fawcett poster, placed on the wall so that her erect nipple is at eye level if you're 5'11 man like I am. THE WAITRESSES: While Mission doesn't have real waitresses, they do have young ladies taking your order and some patrolling the dining area busing tables. I have to say that I've never seen any gross ones here, whoever does the hiring is doing a great job at screening out the ghouls. read more

Amazing food, service, and staff! The bbq ribs and brisket were amazing! They have a ton of sauces to try, my favorite was Memphis belle. It came with cornbread and coleslaw which were also in point. I love what this restaurant stands for! They are huge supporters of our military and wounded warriors!!!! The BBQ is very good as well. I had the pulled pork very yummy. I also liked their Cole slaw and Mac n cheese. My husband had the brisket and sausage and was very happy with both. I am a huge fan of their Alabama white sauce and Georgia mustard. The atmosphere is a very typical Texas BBQ joint (right down to the ice drink bucket as you walk in) just not quite as good as the real Texas thing, but hey, we're in eastern NC which has its own unique style. He the 3 meat combo, Brisket, Turkey and Ribs... All very tasty each with a nice smokey flavor. The sauces are great too and my personal favorite is the Smoky Mountain. Tried it out last night. I had the meat sampler plate. The moist brisket was quite good, pulled pork was not bad, baby back ribs delicious. Cold slaw was very tasty and not overly filled with mayo, crisp and fresh. Sampled the Brunswick stew and that seemed good. Peach cobbler was excellent! Atmosphere is not where I would typically eat but I was kind of digging it considering the proximity to the military population. The only reason to give it 4 stars was the meat needed a bit more smoke and flavor. Sauces were OK but could be perked up a little and couldn't make for lack of smoke. All in all a solid feed, reasonably priced for the portions and I probably will go back if I stay in the area. read more

I went here with my girlfriend and the we got the chopped brisket and the pulled pork sandwhiches and both were excellent. The mac & cheese and fries were also well above average. The staff was nice, the service was fast, and the prices were very reasonable. Additionally they serve beer and I was able to get a pbr as park of my combo. Finally, part of what really makes this place stand out is the dizzying array of sauces. They have bbq 6 sauces, 1 vinegar, 1 malt, 1 mustard, and 1 ranch type sauce, all homemade. This was in addition to catchup, hot sauce and old bay seasoning. All in all a very good dining experience that I would repeat and reccomend. read more

Very tasty, but so overloaded with flavor that I couldn't eat it all. I got wicked heartburn after about 20 minutes, which lasted for hours. I was visiting Wilmington and saw an opportunity for authentic southern bbq. Mission was recommended by a friend of a friend so we gave it a try. I got the babyback ribs and they were just OK. No bark to speak of and no rub flavor that I could detect. From a texture standpoint it seemed like even if they had started in a smoker they were finished in an oven.
