OK folks this falls into the chain BBQ restaurant. I would put this up against Dickies BBQ if you like that chain then this is worth a shot. I got the turkey, brisket (moist), and Mac n cheese...Moist or lean? Excuse me what? I've never been offered a choice of brisket cut before at a chain. So this moist brisket was amazing! I got 2 pieces with the bark still attached and another moist piece. The turkey was also smoked really well and moist. The Mac n cheese was stringy and decent. The sauce list will surely include something you will find tasty. Overall great experience. I have to rate the brisket the winner of my meal. I like their hand cut salty fries. I pour a mix of the mild and spicy sauce over them and it's better than any Canadian poutine. Plus their lemonade mixes perfectly with Sierra Mist for a refreshing spritzer of a drink. read more

I ordered the 2 meat platter-pulled chicken and pulled bbq. Sides are ordered separately -Mac and cheese; potato salad. Meats were in point! Smoked and seasoned to perfection! Our dinner party really enjoyed the array of bbq sauces on the table from each state. Now I'm going to be honest about that potato salad..everyone can't make potato salad and they definitely missed the mark for me. Bubble guts in a bowl! But the Mac and cheese was different! Good flavor and texture...overall the entire table loved it!!! Which is rare! Hands down the best BBQ in ILM...in my opinion. Service was great...my tea glass never went lower than the halfway mark! The pulled pork was a generous portion; perfect for sampling the SEVEN sauces on the table. My fav was the sweet Memphis sauce! Food was great. I had ribs and had plenty to share. Wife had brisket and was delicious. Fries were fresh and crispy. Coleslaw nice and fresh. Been hard to find good coleslaw around here. Guys cooking your food checked to make sure you were happy. Girls on the cash registers happy and smiling. Works for me. I've seen reviews that were lower but they mentioned the fact that the restaurant has a theme. It does the honor vets and the military. Thinking the low reviews were politically based? Hands down some of the best BBQ. The cornbread lacked, but I can overlook it. The restaurant decor was awesome. They obviously support the military from the looks. Places that support the military usually give a discount to military personnel, but when asked I was told, "I can get the manager to explain why we don't." Obviously I wasn't the only one to make this assumption and apparently they have drawn fire from vets. BUT, like I said pretty darn good BBQ. read more

Good food at a reasonable price. Kid friendly and they love to honor not only our military but also any who serve in law enforcement and fire fighters. The pulled chicken was tender and moist. An impressive experience from start to finish. This was our first foray into the world of Mission BBQ, while visiting Wilmington on vacation. We were greeted the moment we entered and were given a thorough tutorial of all things Mission BBQ (the menu, ordering, sauces, etc.). After sitting down to our meal, the community outreach manager, Robin, again broke down the 6+ sauces and some background on the restaurant. Robin was immensely informative and presented generous tastings of the seasonal dessert and fries. Our party was beyond impressed with the experience and would undoubtedly visit again on our next Wilmington/Carolina Beach/Wrightsville Beach excursion. P.S. My family had such an excellent time here! Everything we ordered was exceptional. The brisket was moist and seasoned perfectly. The traditional pulled pork didn't need any of the homemade sauces they offer. The staff even brought around samples of the strawberry short cake. Everyone was very friendly. Place was okay. Maybe a little overpriced for what it really it is. I mean,from the outside in, everything looks like you should be expecting something really good but when you get it and you taste it, it's just okay. Nothing real special. And the whole patriotic thing which I'm sure is well intended just sort of feels forced and sort of gimmicky. If you are selling your food and doing it honor of the people that are serving you better make damn sure that that food lives up to its name. It has to be more than just okay sort of bland sort of too heavy on the smoke sort of mediocre food that this place is trying to pass off as the best bbq in Wilmington. Nuff said. read more

On vacation here and didn't know what to expect from a fast-food version of BBQ. Was pleasantly surprised by the numerous order takers who guided us through the simple menu options. Made our drinks and sat down - within minutes our order was hot and ready from the carving stations. The two of us shared a three meat sampler of sausage, brisket and pulled pork with smoked corn on the cob, freshly cut french fries and mac and cheese. The smoky mountain BBQ sauce was my favorite of the six bottled choices at the table. The sweet tea was fantastic. Excellent authentic Carolina Bbq! The place looks great and the staff was very friendly!

My wife and I had lunch here today, our first time through the doors. Placed our order with a lady that had the patience needed for first timers. Jimmy brought our order to us and explained all the sauces. I had ordered fries and slaw with my brisket and my wife ordered the collards, not knowing or chancing the other sides. Jimmy brought my wife a vinegar sauce for the collards. It was great. I had made a mistake with getting the slaw. I experimented with the different sauces until Jimmy brought us a special 7th sauce. THAT was THE one. Then, with Jimmy knowing that it was our first trip to Mission, he brought to us a sampler of the other sides. Even though the fries were great, I now know that I need to make another showing to order a meal of sides. The beans with pieces of brisket. The best mac and cheese on the planet. The potato salad to die for. The sample of turkey was as tender and juicy as the brisket. The brisket was scrumptious and so tender that I wondered why there was a knife on the plate. The beef brisket was very tender and flavorful. My wife had the turkey which was also very flavorful and tender. My only complaint is that they should price their plates with a side order. I mean who orders only barbeque and a piece of corn bread. So you order beef brisket $7.99, cole slaw $2.00 and baked beans $2.00 and a drink $2.00. Now you are looking at $14.00 for a basic meal. I got a full rack of ribs, they were fast, they were friendly, the ribs tasted good and they gave me 3 different sauces to take with me. The fries were terrible. I've been nauseous all night. So, although they tasted good, they also made me sick, if I had to guess, I would say they weren't cooked enough but who knows. They have a lot of good reviews so maybe it was just that one time I got unlucky, I've been eating out a lot lately so it's bound to happen, but I wouldn't risk it again. read more

I will say the owner is a very sweet lady, as she came out to greet us and seemed very friendly. Husband and I stopped in for lunch. He ordered a rack of babybacks and ordered two sides. I ordered what was described as as oven fried chicken with a delicious coating. Nothing about this meal thrilled either one of us. The ribs were very tender but way too much rub was used. So much so that you really couldn't taste the pork. I tried the baked beans and the first thought that popped into my head was " Cajun seasoning". My husband liked them ok but I didn't. The potato salad: undercooked potatoes are always a downer, and these were under cooked. And again a spicy seasoning was used. Why? I love spicy, but not too excess, and not in potato salad. Copy Red, Hot and Blue's recipe and you might have something. Now to the "Ricky Bobby" chicken. Sigh. I got 4 pieces, two legs, two thighs. Seriously? Can't I just get half a chicken? The way God intended? And the delicious coating appeared to be just plain ol panko bread crumbs with ZERO seasoning of any kind. Bland bland bland. Given the military theme of this place, they better step it up or the mission will be FUBAR. read more

Beware of eateries on a mission. This chain barbecue restaurant is ok, but there's no real standout, aside from the noise level, which is near deafening. MBBQ tries to be all things BBQ and that's where it falls down. It's also ex-pen-sive! Hit the Piggly-wiggly for Smoke Risin ribs, Jackson Big Oak for pulled pork sammiches (and Tyler's in Amarillo if you can get there), but don't set your expectations too high and you'll do okay at Mission. read more

There are not enough good words to describe this place. From their mission statement and what they stand for, to the heart and soul that goes into smoking all their delectable meats; this place shines on all stars! I walked into this place after a simple "bbq" search on yelp; and left an enthralled, ecstatic, and devoted customer. Granted I can only speak for the sampler plate I ordered but I will be back! As far as the food is concerned: The BRISKET IS BUCKIN FOMB! Easily the best brisket I have had the pleasure of sampling on this eastern coast. The babyback ribs follow suit as they are well smoked, fall off the bone tender. While I prefer my ribs to be slathered in bbq sauce towards the end of the cooking period, these are not touched by sauce at all. Granted, they provide plenty of sauce options on the table to decorate your food as you please. The last meat I partook of was some pulled chicken. While it was seasoned wonderfully, it was slightly dry once it got to your seat. Im sure the half bird would be the way to go if you were ordering chicken. If you get the XXL combo then you can choose two sides. We tried the mac&cheese and potato salad. Both were exceptional! So nice to find some real "baked-style" m&c instead of that gross soupy stuff. The potato salad is seasoned with what appears to be a cajun style seasoning that gives it a nice spin. overall a 10/10 experience that is hard to find in this over saturated world of food! read more
