Mission Skateboards is a solid skate shop.There is quite a skateboard scene in the Mission as have been to the skate parks here. I used to surf back in the day & skated a bit yet the ocean was more thing yet still have respect for skateboarding. I remember Mike McGill & Tony Hawk in the day. Skateboarding gets kudos for me for if you wipe out hitting the cement is no joke so definitely takes a daredevil to do this. In Mission Skateboards is Dying Breed SF Streetwear Clothing. Mr. 5 year old has been asking to learn to skateboard. After trying it out at an SF Recs and Park Mobile Recreation event, little guy was ready to commit (props to SF recs and park!! it was fun and they had staff on hand to teach him). We signed him up for skateboard camp with Shred N Butter (another awesome organization!) and they recommended Mission Skateboards to us. Guy in there was chill, friendly, showed us what's good for little guy. And we were walking outta there with a newly fitted board. We just bought two boards here from y daughters, 10 and 13 and had a great experience with the store and the owner, Scott. After I asked a bunch of questions and the girls looked at some possible boards, we ended up with an Enjoi and Stevie Perez. The best parts: This place is damn local. Scott was patient with this newbie dad who had a bunch of questions. Prices seemed in line with other places and the quality seems high. We paid about $100 per board, so they are not cheap, but I trust that these will last a while. If your middle schooler has a 3.0 or higher, with a report card you get 20% off. Fair warning, if you are looking for Target, REI or Sports Basement atmosphere, this is not the place for you, nor does it seem like they want to be that. There is not a HUGE selection of things and if you want gear like helmets and pads, this is not the place. It is clear that this is a true skateboarder's skateboard shop, so if you are going to try and fake it . . . good luck with that ;-) Overall, I would highly recommend Mission Skateboards in order to get high quality equipment as well as to support a local business who is very much integrated in the community. read more

I was helped 1 on 1 with one of the guys behind the counter, who asked all sorts of questions like my experience and what kind of skating I wanted to do. From there, he walked me through all the steps of getting set up with the right parts. He explained why he was choosing each piece and gave me lots of options. Then he set it all up for me! Cost me around $130, which was right around the price point I was hoping for. I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a board. So I've been watching a whole bunch of skate vids online the past few months. I first got exposed to some to of the "underground" skaters through the Epicly Later'd show on Vice Magazine's sister site vbs.tv. Even though I surf, I never really skated - just used it to get from point A to point B. After watching all these hardcore skaters launch themselves over ledges, rails, banks, and the like , I'm now inspired to finally learn how to ollie and with luck, maybe even bust a kick flip. Unfortunately, I went to the local shop in my hood but they're more into longboards and they didn't have much of what I was looking for. So, thank the lord for Yelp. After doing a search, I found Mission Skateboards... Scott - one of the shop guys at Mission- hooked me up with a great deck, trucks, and wheels! Put it all together in a jiffy too. I was additionally stoked to see him interact with a young street rat that was hanging about the shop. Scott was totally cool with the kid - they talked while he put my board together. So thanks Mission Skateboards - and special props to Scott - for getting me started on my latest obsession, skating. Step-son did a search on yelp and found MIssion Skateboards reviewed as a pretty cool skate shop. So my wife and I went with him to get a new deck at Mission Skateboards. As soon as I walked in the shop I knew it was going to be a good experience. The shop is happily reminiscent of all of the early skate shops that I remembered from the 80's and was a positive trip back in time. I was greeted with a Cabellero and a Rob Roskopp hanging on the wall which made me 12 years old again in and even I started considering my own setup to commute back and forth to work. The owner and his wife were amazing and accommodating. The owner's attention and interest that he shared with all of us, but most especially my step-son, felt very genuine. He was very patient with us as we spent about 45 minutes in his shop. It was great to see the staples of the rolling stick when I was a kid still rocking it. The owner's setup of the deck was perfect for my step-son, who is an avid skater. We were so impressed we also purchased a new Thrasher hoody for me and Mission Skate trucker cap for the wife. Of course we got some old school stickers for our very stereotypical Mac laptop. All in all, we all felt it was a great experience and I am certainly going back for my own selfish needs as soon as I get a moment to indulge them. read more

This board shop is great! Oswaldo was very kind to let me in the shop even though he was about to close the gate. He assembled my board quickly and gave good customer service and at the same time he was very knowledgeable. They have a good selection when it comes to boards and etc. My Indy trucks, bones reds bearings, spitfire 54 mm classic wheels, and bones medium bushings ride, sound, and feel like a dream. read more

(Some background: Short Asian female who wanted to buy a skateboard after wanting to try it my entire life...I pretty much suck and can't even ollie but I enjoy the occasional pushing around and face planting in my living room...ok maybe not the last part) Right after I walk in, I couldn't help but feel that they were giving me strange looks. I look around the store for a while until the owner asked me if I needed any help. I told him that I wanted to buy a skateboard. He then asked me what kind of skating I do...I told him I wanted to learn how to push and maybe some tricks here and there. I got a 7.75 Adrian Williams deck with thunder trucks, 53mm atm wheels, some unbranded bearings and hardware (if I'm not mistaken), + grip. Really wanted to put it together myself but I thought it would probably be better to leave it to the professional (I regretted it later and took the entire thing apart and put it back together). The owner was super nice and gave me a couple pointers on how to tictac and recommended some skate spots where I live (though they were all knobbed). Overall really nice experience and the people there were really welcoming to newbies like me. It is a pretty small shop and they have alot of cool stuff that they make themselves. After having a nice breakfast last Saturday I was in a great mood and strolled into this shop with my girlfriend. I actually had a great experience with the owner who built me a custom board that he personally road a year ago. Mine was stolen out of my car, so I wanted to replace it. The guy who was working (whaldo, not sure on spelling) basically had a "why are you bothering me attitude" This was our dialogue... Me: I'm looking for a board like that one on the wall, do you have one? Whaldo: no we don't... Me: okay, can you order one? Whaldo: no I can't, we get them when they come in Me: you know when that will be? Whaldo: not sure. Me: okay what can we do? I'd like to buy a board today Whaldo: I don't know what to tell you This later escalated into profanity being used by whaldo as I walked out. Long story short this place was a great spot with good vibes when the owner is there, but his staff could care less and seem like 30 year olds who want to act cool in front of teenagers. read more

So I have to admit that I was pretty nervous getting back on the board. It had been a few years (try 10) and I wasn't quite concerned about cracking my skull in those old days of barreling down hills and bailing in ditches. I tried to play it cool as all the skater kids came in and loitered. I was concerned about shelling out a lot of cash when I wasn't even sure if I could even stand on the damn thing anymore, so the guy hooked me up with an old deck, old trucks, and even old bearings (I had to sort through the box myself on those), all for FREE! I just bought some nice street wheels, a screw/nut kit, and he set the entire board up for me. It was pretty ridiculous. He even offered to bring me some of his old stuff lying and give it to me. So basically if you're a casual rider, or looking to get started without a big investment, check out what decks and trucks they have and see how cheaply they can set you up. You'll walk out with a board that's already got some street cred. You're still gonna bust your ass though. They can't help you with that. read more

My experience wasn't quite as stellar as the other reviewers. I went in on a Sunday afternoon with my ten year old girl. We were on boards. Simple skate needs, so I thought: a cool skate helmet for her, and a few bearing spacers and speedrings to fettle a board at home. Meh. We have just one sort of crash hat, stashed away in the corner, and no we don't have any choice of sizes .... About the common skateboard parts you need, no all we have is stuff in this glass case, you see, and did you know that you can only buy spacers and washers if you buy whole boxes of bearings .... Lots of cool t-shirts, though. We left empty-handed, and irritated. read more

My favorite part is that they have girly skate apparel and boards. A close second is how this store has become a little epicenter for hipster skate boarders. I haven't bought much stuff here, but it has a very nice, friendly vibe. half of it is a bicycle shop and I felt OK, although I'm afraid of hardcore fixie bicycle people, I'm always saying a bicycle part name wrong and getting this weird, disapproving look. The bike people seemed chill here even though I have a total fear of the bicycle world. There's a great selection of skateboarding magazines. I had a very tough time not staring at the autographed skateboard decks on the wall, among them a Cardiel. It was really hypnotic and almost sacrilegous. There is no real logical reason why being near an autographed skateboard deck would make me skate in a wonderful way instead of a massively pathetic way. My version of reality is too performance based to include such solutions. However, the human mind is built on magic, and perhaps it's a placebo and placebos work! read more

I went here to buy my 10 yr old son a beginners board. The guys were very nice and helpful. He built the skateboard with the specs of my son's size and gave him free stickers to decorate his board. Went in here a while back for my first board and the owner totally helped me out. Super nice dude, and setup a board for me that I've been loving. Patently explained a lot of the parts, considerations, etc. He was also a super nice dude when I rolled in the other day and just sort of shot the shit about skating for a while and glanced at some shoes. Awesome customer service. Only reason I am knocking off one star is for the selection of parts / shoes. Some other places in town have a pretty decent selection, but this is a smaller shop. Great local skateshop in the Mission District and probably in SF. The guy working there is very chill, answered all my questions, and put together my board! I bought a complete deck with cruise wheels and it was only $125, which is pretty cheap for a quality deck! Also, it only took about 15 mins for him to set up the whole board which is other +1 for quality service. I will definitely go back there for replacement parts or another deck. read more

I went here to purchase my first ever skateboard. It was open later than usual but I had no problem and everything went smoothly. I asked plenty of questions to the owner there who was very helpful in giving me insight on skateboarding. He explained everything thoroughly and even let me open a new delivery package that was delivered that day. I chose a girl/chocolate board that was very cool. It fitted the halloween/Giants world series theme that day as the Giants were having a parade at that moment. After deciding and picking all the equipment, he set up my board perfectly! In the end, the owner gave me some beginner tips like how to step on the board and even recommend me a great place to practice, in Golden Gate park where there are tons of space and the pavement is relatively flat. Overall, I had a wonderful experience. The atmosphere there was amazing. In the end, I used a 10% coupon code for checking into yelp which saved me some tax. Skateboard total was ~$130 which I think is not bad, definitely not as cheap as buying the parts but hey, I got it set up for free!. read more
