Unrealistically good skate shop for skateboard related things cant recommend it enough

    Skateworks Downtown Los Altos, CA

Family operated where you can chat with the owner on a daily basis. Great selection of boards, shoes and accessories. Knowledgeable and friendly crew. Love that they have a mini halfpipe in the back. They offer lessons too! Support your local skate shop. You might be able to find a board for less online even a deal from the manufacturer, but by buying local you're supporting folks who are your neighbors and/ or part of your (skate) community. And that's exactly what skateboarding is; a community and your local skate shop like Skateworks are still an essential part of it all.

I came in with my wife and son yesterday while waking around Los Altos and Jason helped me with picking out a longboard. My son has been into riding his scooter so I wanted something to cruise with him or just get outside on. Jason was super helpful and never pushed me in any direction or brand. Have some suggestions and gave me some time to look around. Ended getting a DB longboard and talked to him about building another board at a later time too.

These guys were amazing and so patient! I've never skated before, but both guys in there walked me through the entire process. They were super friendly and had such great insight. I'm amped to start skating!

Posting this as a cautionary tale for anyone buying shoes at Dick's Sporting Goods - Sunnyvale…read more This would have been a one star rating if not for Xavier in Footwear. Excellent service and attitude. I bought a pair of On Cloud shoes and within 5 days realized they were too big. The issue only showed up in real-world use: when walking downhill my foot slid forward into the toe box. That's not something you reliably catch by taking a few steps indoors. I went back to do a simple exchange (not a refund). The shoes were clean and in excellent condition. The only visible difference was very slight yellowing on the outsole contact pads -- noticeable under their bright store lighting but not dirty, or damaged. At first I was told the exchange would be fine. After further inspection, they reversed course and said the shoes were not "resaleable" due to wear. I spoke with multiple people (each initially identifying themselves as "the manager" before clarifying their role), and after a lot of back and forth the best options offered were: * 15% off a replacement pair, or * $60 store credit as a "no receipt return" value (they said this reflects the lowest recent selling price and excludes clearance). I ultimately took the $60 credit because my time is worth something and I needed the correct size. But the key takeaway is this: If you buy shoes here, assume you cannot test them outdoors -- even briefly -- without risking being denied an exchange. The 90-day return policy sounds generous, but in practice footwear appears to need to look completely unworn to qualify. I'm sharing this so others don't make the same assumption I did.

LOL My husband bought a pair of Nikes and it ended up being uncomfortable and caused a bruised toe, which never happened with any of his athletic shoes. My favorite thing about this store is that they have a demo program where, if you pay $40, you can borrow a different demo racquet for a week at a time to test it out before you commit to shelling out $200+ for a new racquet. And, when you finally decide to buy your racquet, they will apply that $40 to the purchase! Swetka's will also give you a discount if you buy 2 or more racquets. After salivating over the Babolat Pure Drive in college, the not playing for over a decade, I finally got back into tennis and wanted to try playing with that specific racquet. After testing out many recommended racquets from multiple different manufacturers and in many different styles, I actually ended up buying the Babolat Pure Aero instead, upon one helpful Swetka staff member's suggestion. And I'm super happy with my purchase! Swetka's also has a ton of options when it comes to all things tennis. Of course, they have a wide variety of different racquets to choose from, but they also have strings, racquet handle wraps, shoes, apparel, you name it and they have all of the tennis-related paraphernalia you can think of! All of the staff are obviously big tennis fans and are willing and able to give you technical advice if you want it. I appreciate their patience and professionalism and friendliness, and I hope to continue patronizing Swetka's for the decades to come!

Yesterday, my wife and I visited REI in Sunnyvale so that my wife could try on various shoes and…read morepurchase what she preferred. Although staff was helpful to her in her search for shoes, what made the entire experience terrible was how hard staff pushed us toward purchasing a membership. One staff member assisting my wife initially had done the sales pitch, and we listened willingly. Later on, another person gave the same sales pitch to my wife, and she kindly told her that she's already been told about the membership. When we went to the check-out counter, the person at the counter started giving the same sales pitch about the membership. I immediately cut her off, my wife told her that she has already been told about it, and I said "no thank you." The person at the counter again tried to give the pitch, and I cut her off again and said "no thank you." For a third time, she tried to resume the sales pitch. I got ticked and gave her a stern response: "NO PLEASE!" She finally stopped. That entire experience left a bad impression on me, and I wasn't sure if this type of thing was specific to just the REI in Sunnyvale (I normally don't shop at REI). So I did some research online and found out that this type of thing happens commonly among various REI stores. I even found an online article from 2015 that talked about this, even citing the CEO of REI who gave a response regarding this matter of pushing memberships. He came across as being understanding of this matter. But that was back in 2015. it's now 2026, and obviously nothing has changed relating to this. I'm not returning to REI after what I experienced yesterday. They've lost any potential future business from me. If they can't accept an initial "no" answer and thus continue to push the sale of a membership, they've lost my respect and my business. And should anyone from REI choose to respond to this post, it's not changing anything from me relating to REI.

Back in…read morethe day, like 10 years ago, they actually used to have a lot more designer shoe options. Like I'm talking really expensive designer at a fraction of the cost. I haven't seen designer shoes at this location for years now. It's unfortunate because that was one of my favorite aspects of shopping here. Now the only "designer" items, if you can call it that, they carry, are Kate Spade and Dooney and Bourke bags (which are hilariously kept locked in a glass case). I've seen the random higher end like Tiffany's keychain and Valentino sunglasses. But you're hard pressed to find any high-end designer items at this location. They do have a fabulous home section, though. Pillows and towels and decorative knickknacks at this location. And they actually do carry some great decorative furniture pieces too. I get some great deals on clothing for my six-year-old daughter. If she needs new clothes, this is my first stop before Target. I would say for the most part, the store is kept as organized as it can be considering how much product they have to put out in the space they have. The fitting rooms could be cleaner. There's always balls of dust on the floors in the fitting rooms. They could stand to run a vacuum through there every morning. I have always found the staff to be pleasant. The only annoying thing is when you are checking out they consistently ask if you want to get the Marshalls/TJ Maxx credit card. And they think they are enticing you with 10% off your purchase if you join. But if you actually do your homework, you'll see that the interest on their company's credit card is outrageous - making that 10% off irrelevant. Don't fall for it unless you plan on paying off your purchase immediately. Otherwise getting their credit card is kind of a trap.

I found a couple of cute St. Patrick's Day decorated plush cats. I got one for myself and one for my BFF. There selection of St. Patrick's Day, Valentine's Day and Easter decor and gifts is exceptional. They had a lovely selection of wrapping paper. I found a roll that had strawberries all over it. I had to get one of those. The checkout line was not bad. They had plenty of employees at the checkout which made the line move fast. Everything in the store is displayed so nice and is very organized. I definitely recommend shopping here.
