My best shot to date on hole 10, right off the tee box.

Pretty new to the game and playing different courses in the area. Gotta say, had a blast playing here for the first time yesterday. Never felt rushed, greens were nice, front 9 was cool and challenging layout. Definitely learned a lot and will be back to play more, shout out to Paul and associate in the pro shop with their assistance and knowledge. Had my best shot ever.. stuck the green on hole 10.

Wanted to get back into golf since I had a lot of time on my hands and my friends were already members at this club so I decided to try it out. The golf course is short and the greens and fairways are decent. So if you are looking for a course that makes you feel like your Tiger Woods than this is the play because the par 4's and 5's are reachable for eagle putts. The membership is great, around $42 a month for free large bucket range balls, $25 for 18 with cart before 2 and a free drink, and $15 for 18 with cart after 2 and 2 free drinks! Also you get 10% off all merchandise in the clubhouse. Great deal that I utilize frequently! So if you are in the mood to play a decent round of golf and work on your short game then this is the place for you!

Biggest problem at The Trails is missing the fairway and the tall grass swallows your ball. Lower cut grass made my day!

Reasonably priced course with excellent challenge and very well kept greens. This is definitely a sleeper course in San Diego.

The moment you step into the clubhouse you realize the vast history of the location. For example, some parts are in need of major repair, but there are also nearly 100 years of player trophies and accomplishments on display in a large lobby time has not touched (nor cleaners, painters, renovators...but I digress). Don't miss the unbeatable hilltop views out the back of hole 1 and hole 18 side-by-side with the cityscape in the background. The same view can be seen from the restrooms, giving this place the best view from the loo award. I played the regulation 18 (they also have a nine hole executive course). The course was in good to very good condition. It's a fun, unique track and there are some very narrow holes, but fair enough because they are shorter. Accuracy off the tee is favored over length on most of the holes. There are also a few challenging elevation changes, but not many blind approach shots, which I don't think anyone enjoys. It's a fun track that keeps you on your toes. Many holes are lined by canyons so errant shots on those will be lost. Another unique aspect is that Balboa Park sits under the landing path of the airport. I tried to catch an airplane in my photos and it was pretty easy to in most all of them. Pace of play was fine at 4.5 hours on a weekday afternoon. Staff was friendly, but they deal with a lot of people so I could see how things could go sideways as some reviews have mentioned. Just exercise the golden rule. If you play golf and live in San Diego, I say this is a must play at least once. I'll be back again when I'm in the right mood.

Pros: all main 18 holes ranges from par 3s to par 5s offering great range of your golf set and challenges your skills throughout your clubs. There is plentiful amount of parking near hole one and the driving range. There is a separate 9 hole course that's smaller par 3s that you can choose between which is a nice feature. The views along downtown San Diego across the course was a great addition to the course. There is a cafe with food and drink next door to the main golf shop which is a nice feature. Cons: this place does get very busy so make sure to book way in advanced. Be aware that golf carts are an additional cost on top of your tee time. You can walk this course but with people playing behind you in carts, you might need to go faster than normal. Verdict: I would play this course again and again. With tee times ranging between $40 in twilight and upwards during the day, it's a solid choice for a great game

The green fees are $85, but my friend informed me he paid a $25 advance hold fee per person, so make that $110. I doubt one would be able to simply walk on to this course. We booked a few weeks in advance and only had two tee time options. We had an 11:30 start time, but didn't tee off until 11:50 due to a tournament, which was backed up. That said, I was both surprised and annoyed to see they allowed the foursome ahead of us to walk versus take carts. We were held up all day and didn't finish until just before 5 PM (sunset was at 4:45). My only other caution is there are at least two holes which run along heavily trafficked streets, where a lot of construction was also underway. If you're easily distracted by noise, this is probably not the course for you. We saw the cart girl on two occasions. Cold beverages and cold food, only. If you want hot food, you'll have to order before you start, after you finish, or between the 9th and 10th holes. I do not recall seeing any bathrooms on the back 9, so be sure to moderate your drinking or else roll the dice if you can't hold it.

The course is about a 20 minute walk from the Del or a five minute Uber. Club rentals available, driving range, chipping green, putting green. The course isn't hard, but there is definitely water that comes into play. If you slice you can certainly end up wet...or in the street on a couple holes. Greens were aerated when I played (a little annoying), but otherwise the course was in great shape. I would 100% play here again.
