Rest assured no food goes to waste. What they cannot use, they will pass on to other organizations. They do have guest speakers available if you want to do a food drive for them or inspire others. I try to attend their events like the Souper Bowl... Be prepared, this event is a mad house, but so much fun... Soup stations all around the building, try one, try all and then vote for your favorite. Some soups are also available for purchase. Non-alcoholic drinks are usually provided. So next time you don't know what to do with food, your time or money, consider donating or volunteering for this organization. Well worth it.

I have a really mixed relationship with Broad Ripple Village, located six miles north of downtown…read moreIndy and the longest established of Indy's seven cultural districts. The area was established by Jacob Coil (which is where the recently established Coil Apartments got their name) in 1836 - Coil actually did name it Broad Ripple because "the ripple in the river at this point was the largest and widest in the country." Legend had it only one man, Isaac Simpson, could throw a stone across it. The area has nearly 17,000 residents and is known for its diverse population. It played host to White City Amusement Park in 1906 and The Vogue opened in 1938. The Broad Ripple Village Association was founded in 1969 to promote life in the area. Of course, many who've lived here for years will testify that the area's "village" vibe has lessened over the years as ramshackle buildings are replaced by high-rise apartments and indie shops are replaced by corporate chains. Crime is higher these days (though overstated in my opinion). The bar scene has always been pretty heavy in the area and the introduction of parking meters continues to be an unpopular decision. I find accessibility to be hit-and-miss in the area, though it has improved with recent construction efforts as curb cuts get better, accessible parking improves, and at least some stores have made an effort to improve access. Some of the older buildings continue to be difficult in terms of access including one-step spots right on the strip and those places in some of the older residential settings. Broad Ripple continues to be a great area for dining, the still under development Riverwalk, a handful of great coffeehouses, nightlife, and a general artsy vibe. The Broad Ripple Art Fair continues to be popular, the Vogue is still a great spot for indie acts, the farmer's market is great, and Broad Ripple Park (and family center) remains popular (Personal Note: It's also where I was baptized!). In terms of parking, there are quite a few businesses with lots, the parking garage at 62nd and College, parking meters, and the Red Line goes directly to 62nd and College. Despite lamenting some of the commercialization of the area, I still have a soft spot for Broad Ripple and spend quite a bit of time here. To catch everything available, check out the Broad Ripple Village Association website as there's an awful lot to do including the Monon Trail and the Indianapolis Art Center.

It is an artsy kind of place that is filled with public art. You will find some awesome murals here. You will also find some nice shops, art galleries, boutiques and restaurants here as well. Some cool restaurants include 317 Burger, Union Jack Pub, Rise n Roll bakery, Sun King Brewery, Broad Ripple Brewpub, the Egyptian Cafe and Hookah Bar, Hoagies and Hops, and Brickhouse Dueling Piano Bar, just to name a few. And some cool and notable shops to check out include Indy CD and Vinyl, Monon Plant Company, Uptown Pup, Prairie General, Indy Urban Flea, and the Indianapolis Art Center. It is also home to the 62 Acre Broad Ripple Park. Most of the area is covered with metered street parking with a few commercial lots also available. It is a relatively clean area that has a high class feel. It is very close to Butler University and is a popular spot for many students. This is a beautiful place that holds a large portion of the Monon Trail and runs some of the White River Canal. They host a farmers market every Saturday, year round, in the Glendale Town Center. This is definitely a place to check out and spend some time at if you are visiting. It is a cool place for locals to come to as well. I thoroughly enjoyed checking out the shops and wonderful murals in the area. This area is full of life and packed with history and culture.

And not just furniture, but kitchen goods, bedroom sets, knickknacks, silverware, flatware and lots of other things. I've been looking for a coffee table for a while, and I found three different ones that I would have taken home with me immediately. The tables -- and all of the furniture -- were quality, made of solid wood and many of them were mid-century style. I did end up buying one of the coffee tables, and I'm very happy with it! I'm actually planning on going back soon to check out what else they have, because I was so laser-focused on coffee tables. The person who worked there was very kind and helped me carry and load my table into my car.

It's the little things... :) -It is cash only but there are several change machines in store that work beautifully. -clean! The machines themselves are cleaned and well-maintained, the floor (even in the winter) is free of lots of spills and debris. -There are staff on site to assist with change, and and other questions. - They offer free Wi-Fi with excellent signage to know the code. - Kroger is in the same parking lot, so a 29 minute wash cycle is perfect to run in and grab a couple of things. Pricing is $3 to wash for a 2-load size washing machine. This is about the same size as our home washing machine. They also offer drop off laundry services at about $1.50 per pound. This is significantly cheaper than tide cleaners, which charges close to $2.75 a pound.

I've been a volunteer with Starfish for over 2 years now, and it has been the most rewarding…read morevolunteer experience I've ever had. The program matches college graduates with high school students who are typically going to be first generation college students and whose families' income falls within a range similar to the requirements for the 21st century scholars program. I was matched with a wonderful scholar who needed a rematch in her sophomore year because her previous mentor had to withdraw from the program. We took art classes, visited colleges, explored some parks, museums and ate out at fun restaurants. We also worked on college applications and stressed waiting to hear back...and I'm thrilled to say my scholar just started this summer at IU!! I'm looking forward to exploring Bloomington with her on my upcoming visits! If you're looking for a volunteer experience that will give you the chance to build a relationship and help make a difference for a young person I highly recommend Starfish! Time commitment needs to be regular, at least twice a month face to face with texting and calls in between, but can be anytime and anywhere that works for you and your scholar. I'm signed up to be matched with a new freshman in addition to staying on as a mentor with my now post Starfish college student. I'm hoping some other Yelpers will join me!

As a chaplain, among the various ways that I serve my community, I'm a strong believer that no human being should ever die alone (I also believe no human should ever live alone - except by choice). I've companioned more than I can count through the end-of-life journey and I spent 10 years working in an emergency room setting dealing with life-and-death on a daily basis. I love, and I mean really love, the Abbie Hunt Bryce Home. Started in 2004, the Abbie Hunt Bryce Home is tucked into a fairly non-descript corner near 47th & Keystone in an office park where it seems it would be wildly out of place. It's not. The staff and volunteers behind the Abbie Bryce Hunt home would tell you that this home is a home. It's not a hospice. It's not a nursing home. It's not a medical facility. It's a home where Indy's low-income and homeless individuals can live out the last chapters of their live in dignity and with respect. The home is free of charge and available to those with a terminally ill diagnosis. Features of the Abbie Hunt Bryce Home include: 1) Private single rooms with semi-private baths, kitchen facilities, living rooms and family room space. 2) Trained staff and volunteers who provide emotional, physical, and spiritual support to each resident, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 3) Medical assistance from community Hospice teams. 4) Full collaboration with other providers of homeless services in the community. 5) Leadership by a committed group of community volunteers, dedicated to providing the means necessary to carry out the mission. The Abbie Hunt Bryce Home accepts referrals from hospitals, hospice programs, charitable organizations including other shelters and social service agencies, physicians, faith-based organizations, family and direct referrals. While I've long been familiar with the Abbie Hunt Bryce Home, it was my recent experience with a friend who lived out his last days here that has prompted me to sit down and write a review praising the home and its staff and volunteers. Much like Legacy House, I'm always in awe of organizations that provide their services at no charge. It's rare. It's desperately needed. I'm even more in awe when those services and supports are of high quality. Quite honestly, the Abbie Hunt Bryce home is exemplary. The Abbie Hunt Bryce Home is always looking for volunteers. They have a community-based board of directors. The Abbie Hunt Bryce Home is a 12-bed home. The parent organization, Morning Light, also runs the nearby Pennwood Place - a 35-room building. Abbie Hunt Bryce used to fall under the real of VNS (Visiting Nurse Service) as it was run by their foundation. However, the foundation separated from VNS and sought an individual identity. It's just a relief that this vital project continues.
