Beware of shopping at Mr Wright. A male salesperson berated my father today after we brought in corked wine to return. My parents have been loyal customers for two decades and this man was rude, unprofessional, and left me afraid for safety. Usually love coming to this liquor store because they have a great selection and the staff is so helpful/friendly. However the manager (5'6 bald man) is cruel to his employees. Loudly saying "are you fu**king ret*****?" to one of his employees. When another shopper called him out he said "I can speak to my employees however I want to. I should fire him." This is a very delayed review from my experience in May 2020. I wanted to send my friend who lives near E 96th St some champagne for her birthday. I first looked at some online retailers but they all had steep shipping charges. She lives in Manhattan so I knew there would be a lot of wine shops nearby, so I decided to see if any would deliver to her, and found Mister Wright. Surprisingly they have no delivery fee if you spend a certain amount ($25 since she lived so close by). The delivery form was easy to fill out, with a space for a gift message and special instructions for delivery (leave with doorman, etc.) as well as preferred time of delivery. It all went even better than expected. She sent me a pic of the wine and champagne - they not only typed up the note for me, but beautifully wrapped the bottles. I was very impressed how easy it was to send a nice gift to my friend during Covid times and would recommend Mr. Wright to anyone who needs to do the same. read more

Just don't spend money here. There are plenty of other places to help local businesses, but just not here. Owner/manager (white hair man) incredibly rude and just money driven. They are not customer driven. Saw how bad they treated a guy asking for a return for an unopened bottle and they were rude and condescending. Asked for advice and they will recommend high price point bottles, if you say you are under a budget, they just loose the interest and will give you what they have overstocked. Because yeah, I picked their recommendation and it was an awful wine for 15 bucks ended using for cooking. Also, even the sanitizer offered at the entrance, I woud not recommended going in. It is just so crowded with bottles everywhere that there is no space for social distancing at all. They don't limit the people inside either. Go to any of the several liquor stores in the UES, don't give money to this kind of people. read more

We were greeted by a super helpful and knowledgeable sales person who steered us in a great direction- Pouilly Fume and Chablis- both were delicious! I'd have to agree with all of the negative reviews about the workers being rude and condescending. The moment you walk in, there's a ton of workers just roaming the floor and jump at you and ask if you need help. It's a bit uncomfortable, as there's so many of them for no reason. It's not like the store is that busy and needs that many. I go to the checkout and ask the lady which of 2 wines I chose she'd recommend for cooking. She then broadcasted the question to the 50 million workers and they immediately began laughing about one of my choices. I had been a long time customer. This was my neighborhood place. I ordered several hundred dollars worth of booze today, but forgot one thing, then called back to see if it could be delivered. Mister Wright, Mr. RIGHT. Gotta say this place SLAPS. I actually took a group of non-native friends on a field trip here. That's how good it is. This place is a wonderland. It's jammed packed and busy all the time, but you can always find someone that is willing to help you. You could say to them, "I'm cheap af and looking to get drunk." And they'll reply, "I got u fam. Red or white." It's truly a non pretentious, easy breezy time. My only issue is that I always end up spending too much. It's the best liquor store on the UES and frequently has sales and is cheaper than the counterpart on the UES. Don't go in with a big backpack, because you will knock down bottles. I dunno about the actual Mr. Wright. He kind of just gets in the way, he loiters about the store and stands in the aisles. He seems like a jerk. My Opinion! I have been a customer for for a number of years. Order four or five bottles every two weeks. Bought a $25. bottle of Pino from willamette valley Oregon. Usually Pino from Oregon is the best , fruity and smooth. This bottle was acidic and harsh to the point of not drinkable. I opened it for a dinner party but did not serve it, both my wife and I tasted it a few times to make sure. I brought it back and the blond woman , who is unusual very nice but can get nasty if you have a complaint, said it was fine after she tasted it. I was amazed she would blow off a good customer over a questionable bottle of wine. I recently witnessed the owner be rude to a customer while I was browsing the selection. Customer was asking for wine recommendations. The owner demanded a budget range from the customer. When the customer didn't know, owner simply said "I can't help you" and walked away. Prices seem ok, but I was turned off by attitude of the owner. This place has it all and then some. Its great that places like this exist on the UES. The staff here are in every nook and cranny (in a good way). Always there to help you find the perfect chardonnay to go with your spicy thai food, very helpful in all the best possible ways. Top marks for the staff! The prices are pretty fair considering they are the only store in the hood that has this type of selection. That helps. They will have everything you could possibly want and the place is massive. For 9 years, I estimate I bought roughly 1 bottle of wine a week at this store...or roughly $7,000+. In 2019, they lost my business for good, and I'll never spend another dime there again, and now actively tell everyone I know who lives in the neighborhood - BUY YOUR ALCOHOL ANYWHERE BUT MISTER WRIGHT. Here's why. One night, while walking my dog -- at a time when he could only walk 1/2 block because he tore his ACL on one leg -- he briefly lifted his leg on the wooden sign out front before I could tank him away. A Mister Wright employee came out of the store and yelled: "Don't let your F$$KING dog pee on my sign." I was shocked. I apologized, he retreated into the store and glared at me. A woman bystander remarked that the way he spoke to me was unnecessary, rude, and she was as shocked as I was. This employee of Mister Wright then stood near the entrance, continuing to glare at me, as many people came in and out. He came out to yell at me again that there's a reason they call it "curbing" a dog. He continued glaring at me, while talking with a woman who I believe may be the owner. She came outside to talk with me. Her approach was reasonable, she never yelled. We discussed what happened, I apologized again for my dog. She apologized "if" this other employee cursed at me. He did. I reiterated this. She lamented that the sign comes inside at night and if dogs pee on it, that comes in the store. I apologized again. And I told her that while I appreciate this must be frustrating for the store, my dog is not the first to pee on this sign -- and he won't be the last. The woman who was a bystander suggested maybe they should move the sign closer, to which the employee responded that the sign is a good selling point, and brings in a lot of traffic. I noted that an employee coming out to yell at a long-time customer does the exact opposite. While I see dogs pee and poop all over that front area every single day, I'd never once seen something like what happened to me that night. What's more, one reason I shopped at Mister Wright over the years -- even despite the HIGH prices -- was because I appreciated how generally friendly the employees were, and that it was dog friendly. I understand that you won't miss the business of just one customer. But you really should consider who you hire to be in a customer facing role. In less than 90 seconds that man lost you a loyal customer of 9 years. read more

Make sure the seals or stickers are not broken. I purchased a rum sold with broken stickers. Although It's my bad to not carefully look at it, I thought i would be able to get it replaced if I go back immediately. However they refused to replace it with a new bottle, and told me this cannot happen because they make sure these stickers are sealed when they stock inventory... so nothing should go wrong... I got really uncomfortable drinking it so i had to throw away the whole bottle. The staffs are nice and friendly, and I always get help when I need recommendations. Always find an impressive selection and great sales here, including some hard-to-find and unique wines and spirits. Right now they have a fantastic deal on rose, so I've been stocking up. They are also one of the few places in town that carry our favorite sake, Narutotai. The employees are always friendly and helpful. My only small nit is that despite its wide variety of products, it's a small, tight space and sometimes hard to navigate the tight aisles and precariously stacked boxes. Well at least they have a sense of humour and a huge selection. (We've been buying here, - more properly largely avoiding the place because of the lack of impartial advice there, - for over 20 years) Staff's attitude is friendly but whenever one asks for a recommendation, its curious that the recommended wine is always the closest to the staff member's right elbow: And is uniformly lousy. Not always, but too often for comfort: It would appear that the precise geographical position where you are standing when you ask a question is no guarantor of an adequately OK recommendation? Occasionally their wine can taste decent but sometimes where the wine tastes OK, the act of leaving their wine open on the table for long enough for it to breathe can render an OK-tasting (badly produced) wine vinegary. I do know that some places have to drink just-opened wine, without letting it breathe. (Commercial functions? Where the wine has to be opened and poured immediately, - to be downed immediately) But I like to rely on the shop to steer me clear of that type of commercially produced gut-rot. Trader Joes manages it, why can't this place? Judging by their recommendations, someone running the place is a real vinegar connoisseur. They do, obviously, have some nice wines, it would be useful if their staff occasionally recommended them. I'm not setting out a general right-elbow RULE here, I would imagine the recommended wine could be the one closest to the left elbow if the staff member is left handed? But when they say something like "Yes, its smooth, and velvety with a hint of citrus in the finish" What they mean is "This one could very well strip the enamel off any teeth it touches on the way down" But our worst experience here was when my wife went in and asked for a recommendation for my birthday present. She said that I loved single malts and would they recommend one to buy for a special birthday present. Their recommendation was nothing short of disgusting. The absolute roughest single malt scotch I have ever tasted in my entire life, possibly longer. To use the word undrinkable would be a grotesque understatement. This was a curious experience for a single malt LOVER: The shop's recommendation effectively guaranteed the world's worst and most miserable birthday present ever. Should my wife have known that when it said "virgin oak" on the label, it was some sort of code and what it meant was "too inexperienced to know what D L she is doing" One is inevitably drawn to wonder why any self-respecting liquor shop would stock this stuff. Who is the target audience? Ten-minute-aged-moonshine drinkers looking for something new? I hope they got a laugh out of conning someone into buying it, to get rid of their stock. [I need hardly add, they tried saying they would take it back. And then, - when they saw how they had finally managed to get rid of one of those bottles, - cheerily refused. Alleging that as I had (self-evidently) tried it, I no longer fell within the class of customers who could say it was revolting. Seems they know precisely how bad it is, - and not just by the slightly blindingly obvious lack of any age-rating on the label. I can't help it! This is my favorite liquor store! Everyone that works here is so helpful and friendly. They have a huge amount of stock and selection is the best. One year I came in looking for a special wine. They had it. For holiday gift giving they make the gifts look pretty. Nice presentation matters. Plus they don't charge extra for wrapping. Since my family is into arts and crafts, I like it when they dispose of the wooden wine boxes. They sure come in handy for storage and keeping kids busy decorating them. Seems that Mister Wright does not treat all his patrons equally. Was in the store recently and witnessed a young black man being told to leave despite showing an ID that clearly showed he was over the age of 21. The store manager said he had to leave and did not give specific reason as to why and the kid had no option but to leave. I have gone there for 15 years and when recently I asked for her help in choosing a case, she added in bad wine, overstocked, that they need to offload. She is very rude when I call. And the man with white hair (I think Mr. W) attacked me about an order I sent back. He said no one else had complained. I asked him if he tried the wine. He said no. Fast forward a couple months, many complaints. I have tried to reach them about my most recent issue. They told me when I called that they were very busy with clients and to call back. I have been using Mr. W for 10 years now. They have extremely discounted "drinking", i.e., crowd-pleasing, wines which helps with a party. And to keep expenses within the budget. Other than the very low priced decent wines, they offer no advantage. What I find particularly disturbing is that, after ten years, I still feel like I represent money for them. However they can get it from me. Once when three bottles of the same (cheap) wine were horribly bad, I returned them. And they accepted. Like a $8/9 dollar bottle. No skin off anyone's back. But then, months later, I think it was Mr. W (white-haired guy) who approached me (when I was perusing selections in the store) and chastised me about returning the wine. I was thrown off. He said that he had heard I returned the wine, but no other customers returned it. Intimating I must have been wrong. I asked him if he or his staff had tried it. He said no. Several months later, I was told by a staff member that there subsequently had been complaints by others. Ultimately, they seem to be money driven. And somewhat rude. SO~ if you want a cheap bottle that is decent, yes, go to them. If you want a relationship or store that will give you an excellent wine, go elsewhere. read more
