We don't even live on the UWS any more, but for a minimum order of$50., Beacon delivered free (theater district). Original review: I ordered vodka for a friend with their online service on April 30. As of today (July 11), they have not delivered it, and they have ignored multiple emails from me for an update. Avoid this vendor. Update: They respond over a year after the original order (and nearly a year after the original review) to claim that they tried to deliver it. The hubby and I were trolling the Upper West Side, to see how the other half of the city live, and we stumbled on Beacon Wine & Spirits. The hubby was familiar with this shop but it was new to me. When we stepped inside, it was like wine nirvana! So many wines to choose from! We bought several bottles of wine, a few spirits and champagne (New Years Eve is coming!!). They even carry the ever elusive Veuve Clicquot demi sec. What was even more amazing is that they delivered our wine and spirits free of charge - on the Upper East Side! Solid spot for all kinds of liqour. I look for the most convenience to get the types of liquor I am interested in, specifically Japanese liquors, Sake's, and plum wines, among other things, like specialty import beers. Beacon Wine and Spirits is better than ever. Chris the manager is amazing kind and knowledgeable. As you walk in the door they say hello and ask how they can help. Everyone is kind and service-oriented. There is also a Venezuelan gentleman who is very knowledgeable. Unlike many other wine stores, they are not overpriced. The prices have gone up but they are not taking advantage of their customers. They keep a lot of wine in the refrigerator including a wide arrange of good half bottles and cans. They also do quick delivery. Everyone who works in that store is superb and helpful as soon as go to the refrigerator someone pops up to help me search for my favorites. read more

The UWS has no shortage of options for wine and spirits: Corks on Columbus (great owners), that place on Amsterdam around 70th, Wine 67. But I was at the Beacon Bar after picking up pies for Thanksgiving at Fairway (I had intended to buy at Citarella but a friend told me for apple and pumpkin, basic pies, Fairway would be fine: I got no end of s*** for this from the Thanksgiving host lol). I got a Sauvignon in the "manager's picks" section. Nice New Zealand, 2017. Also a Bordeaux. Friendly service and fair prices. read more

I'm not a big fan of rose, but what the heck. Found a nice bottle of rose Sancerre. Nice, friendly, perfectly helpful staff. A shop that acts like they actually wants your business and shows their appreciation. Always ask if you'd like help when you walk in, if you do they provide a real service - hearing the customer needs and assisting full-on. Then they leave you alone if you'd like to browse and finalize your selection(s) or continue to help you make your selection(s). Its been a very long time in this city that true customer service has gone a long way with ones overall shopping experience and this is the type of store which understands that perfectly. We've been using Beacon wines for delivery during the Pandemic. They have a great inventory, well represented on the well organized web site. Delivery is prompt and efficient. Most importantly, should there be an item which has gone out of stock, they call, and will happily suggest a replacement, or you can without concern say "Something similar in a similar price range" and they'll grab a lovely bottle. Excellent service - always friendly, they go out of their way to be helpful when you look lost, would like recommendations, or need anything, but leave you alone when you know what you're doing or are just browsing. They'll give you honest opinions too: Told me straight-up that the bottle I was buying wasn't "a home run" but that it was solid, especially for my price point (read: slightly more expensive than cheap). Yeah, that was right on the money. In general, this seemed to me to be one of the -- if not THE -- most reasonably priced wine shops in the UWS. It's with deep regret that I have to end my experience with Beacon wines &spirit in a negative note. Everything started with a great high note and I was so looking forward to spend $500 and purchase the holiday gifts here. Before today, I was so impressed with the service they provided and the knowledge their staffs have about their products. I almost never come to this side of the town, because I live in midtown east. However, since I was going to the Charlie Puth concert on Thursday, I decided to checked out this place while waiting for the show to begin. It took me by surprised that they carry the Japanese whiskey " Hakushu" I'be been searching for and also I was really interested in getting some wines from them for holiday gifts for my friends. I immediately put the whiskey on hold because they would be close by the time concert ends. I was told that they would hold 24 hours. Since I'm uncertain about if I can make it there before 10pm on Friday, I asked if I can pay over the phone in case I can make it on Friday. They told me it would be totally fine. On Friday around 6, when I found out I will be staying at work til much later, I called them and wanted to pay for the whiskey over the phone so I can secure the bottle, the guy who answered the call said they will definitely have it if I go on Saturday, there's no need to pay for it on the phone. With their assurance, the naive me believed it. I prepared myself to visit upper west side on Saturday for dinner, so I can pick up the whiskey, bottles of vodka that I tasted in Thursday, three bottles of Malbec and two bottles of Riesling. And, I found out when I got there that the bottle I placed on reserve was sold. They claimed that they weren't the person speaking to me over the phone and didn't know they still need to hold the bottle. I stood there blankly and speechless. I cannot hide my disappointment nor bring myself to continue any business with them. I'm mad at myself for listening or trusting what the guy told me over the phone, but I'm also very disappointed about how I was led to believe that I could just come on Saturday and the whiskey will be there for me. It's sad that things transpired this way, and my experience ended sour. I've learned my lesson and I hope that the staffs at the store will communicate better in the future. The shopping experience, trust, and the Consistence in service is a key reason why some customers keep on going back to the same store and I happen to be someone who wants to enjoy it when I spend my money. I cannot overlook how disappointed I was with my experience here and will do everything I can to avoid similar type of disappointment in the near future, which includes not visiting the store. I ended up purchasing the Hakushu from the store called " Shon 45 Wine and Spirit"on 50th and 8th for $20 less. If you are also having hard time looking for that bottle, the store on 50st still have quiet a few left! Hurry!!! read more

In reviewing wine stores, I will be up-front: there is only one perfect winestore I've ever visited, and that's Sam's Fine Wines in Chicago--a Costco-sized warehouse with regional wine experts perched at every aisle, followed by a kilt-clad Scotsman offering complimentary scotch tasting at the checkout. Still, Beacon does pretty well, considering it's probably a fifteenth the size of Sam's--and sans a Scotsman. The first index of a good winestore is ambient temperature upon entrace: if it feels warmer than 65 degrees, watch out! Anything expensive you may be trying to buy could be cooked into Kendall-Jackson swill. For that matter, anything worth drinking--at any price point--will be worse for the wear. Fortunately, Beacon passes the test--it's noticeably chilly in the summer and somewhat brisk in the winter: a perfect combo. The second index of wine-store-grooviness is--of course--selection. Now this is more complex than it sounds: the Burgundy Wine Store in Chelsea is jaw-dropping with (duh) Burgundies--but go in for a riesling and you'll be walking out with a pouty lower lip. Beacon has no specific regional concentration, but has a remarkable diversity of selection within each region: there's more to Rhone wines than Chateauneuf and Hermitage, just as there's more to California than Cabernet and Chardonnay. You'll find the adventures in between: Gigondas and Cote-Rotie for the Rhone, and Chenin Blanc and Pinot Noir for the California. The final index: price. Beacon--though in the UWS and thus not the cheapest of areas to buy wine--is reasonable, given the quality of the producers and the diversity of choices available. I often find the most helpful baseline is checking the price of the ubiquitous Yellowtail Shiraz Reserve--if it's more than $7.99 or the place doesn't sell it (!), walk out in protest. It's the cheapest available bottle of good red wine out there right now, and should stay that way: cheap ($7.99) and available (sold in every store). Beacon, perhaps most nobly of all, stokes that urge in all of us who (like me) are tempted to buy wines and store them indefinitely on our racks because they look nice. In fighting this urge, I recall what old sommeliers say to people purchasing wine glasses: "buy nothing that you can't afford to break." My thought: buy nothing you can't afford to drink. Beacon Wine & Spirits rocks. It should hardly come as a surprise but as soon as you walk inside you'll find a great selection of wine, and spirits. Throughout the shop there's floor to ceiling displays of wines from across the world with enough selection to satisfy even the pickiest of your sommelier friends. Beacon's sweet spot seems to be around the $12-$25 price point for a bottle and but they do have some for far more or less depending on what you're looking for. I haven't been in enough to truly tell but it feels like they rotate what they have and are often showcasing something new. From a spirits standpoint I've been impressed by their selection as well. They have a large number of different whiskeys and bourbons and also cover the vodka, gin, and rum end of things well too. I think what stands out most to me in the overall atmosphere of Beacon - it's large but not overwhelming, and the staff that works there is helpful without being pretentious like so many other wine shops. On multiple occasions I've had someone walk through the store with me finding wine that will fit both my taste and budget and it's much appreciated. I would love to see a few more in the $7-10 range based on my unsophisticated budget-conscious palette, but overall this is a fantastic shop for any wine or spirit you could want. read more

Came here today while waking in the neighborhood. Thought I'd see what their selection and prices were like. First, their liquor selection is pretty crummy and unbelievably overpriced. Then when I asked for a certain bottle they said they didn't have it, which was well enough, but they each made some jokes (under their breath-but loud enough to hear) that that brand of liquor was too low class to carry. The very bottle I was searching for has a 93 rating on wine enthusiast and is quite palatable and well worth one's time. I'd stay away from this place. If not for the shitty service then for the crappy prices. read more

My favorite liquor store on the UWS hands down. 4.5 stars because the employees can be hard to track down if you need help, but otherwise my visits here have been overwhelmingly positive. This might actually be the largest liquor store I've been to in Manhattan. Take that with a grain of salt though - my liquor store experiences are almost exclusively limited to the UWS. But considering how many liquor stores are scattered down Broadway at this point, I'm still working with a fairly sizable pool here. And Beacon is far and away the best. Like I said, this place is quite spacious. They have an impressive selection of whiskey (which happens to be my favorite liquor) and an even more impressive selection of wine. And once you do find someone to assist your with your beverage choices, they're always pleasant and helpful. The employee I've interacted with most is an older gentleman, who I have a feeling is the owner/manager. He's more of a wine connoisseur than anything else, but his whiskey knowledge has served me well too. When looking for a fairly high-end bottle of red wine for a good friend, he directed me to a chateauneuf du pape, among a few other things. My dad - who happens to be a wine collector - knew the winery, and encouraged me to go ahead with it. Great success. Positive experience #2 came when I was, again, looking to purchase a nice bourbon for someone. That someone being my dad, who rarely drinks bourbon. He knew my infatuation with Blanton's bourbon, and while he doesn't typically drink whiskey, he agreed to try it during my next visit to my childhood home. But alas, Beacon didn't have any Blanton's. Sold out, dammit. But fear not! They had something even better (and at the same price point): Widow Jane. My new favorite bourbon (though I'm honestly more of a rye girl myself). Great success. Positive experience #3: I was looking to buy a bottle of vodka to have for pregaming purposes. For a woman with mostly female friends, vodka is virtually always a safe bet. I will drink vodka if that is what's around, but I much prefer whiskey and gin. But for the purposes of satisfying a bigger crowd, I set out to buy some vodka. I was planning to make a beeline for the Absolut, but wouldn't ya know it, they had a vodka distributor positioned in the center of the store giving out samples! The vodka: Fair. Not fair as in just okay, Fair as in the brand. The sales rep told me it's made from quinoa, so it was already becoming a big hit. I had to hold back my scoff. I swear, quinoa and kale are on their way to world domination. But then a funny thing happened - I tried it, and all of a sudden, I ENJOYED the taste of vodka. Straight. What?!? I almost hated myself for this, but I obviously had to buy it. Pricier than I had hoped for, but worth it. read more

This review is based solely on Beacon's whisky selection which is impeccable. I have found some pretty rare whiskey's here including Yamazaki 18 yr, Bunnahabhain 12 yr, Lagavulin 16 yr, Ardbeg, Laphroaig, etc. If you're a whiskey fan then you can probably find what you're looking for here. The one whisky I wish they carried was Kilchoman's which is a newer brand. If you can't find what you're looking for here, just ask the staff and they can either order for you or redirect you. They're very helpful and knowledgeable. Beacon's is my local go-to liquor store in the UWS. Beacon has some of the most competitive pricing in the city. I don't know how they do it, but most of the whiskys here are a good $3-$5 cheaper than other liquor stores. It's a huge plus. read more

Large selection, but the few times I've been in, the unfriendliness of staff has been a big turn-off. The quality of the wines says that someone knows what he (and it would be a he) knows what he's doing, but the folks on the floor are not particularly knowledgeable. If you're in the vicinity, walk a couple blocks and go to Acker Merill on West 72nd - a GREAT wine store and a sophisticated staff. Just saying - you don't have to settle. read more

That said, I am rating Beacon Wines & Spirits on the taste of my friends who aren't lacking the alcohol-processing enzyme. Each time I've bought wine from Beacon Wines & Spirits, the salesperson was helpful in choosing a wine on my specifications of the dollar amount I wanted to spend and the party I was attending (light meal, hors d'oeurvre, full meal, etc.). I come to each party with my wine and people compliment me on my excellent choice. So, if you too cannot distinguish between a merlot and a malbec but would like to feign connoisseur status, the nice people at Beacon are quite helpful. read more

My wine shop of the moment. Why? Admittedly the proximity to Fairway makes groceries and vino a combined single trip. But beyond that (and the reason for 4 stars), these people are actually--gasp!--helpful. I've been to many a wine shop, both in NYC and in other areas and I have to say that generally speaking wine shops come in two varietals: (a) the snobby wine enthusiast owner who thinks he's related to Robert Parker himself, which makes him completely unapproachable and you feel like an idiot if you have even a question that exposes even the slightest ignorance ("would you recommend an Aglianico or Nero d'Avola for XYZ occasion?"). (b) the town drunk who, in an entrepreneurial moment years ago, decided to turn addiction into investment and opened up a corner liquor store where he can can booze at wholesale prices and talk to other drunks all day long. Usually there is an animal who resides inside the store (either an old lab or overweight cat, or both), and the wine selection is more-or-less an afterthought. There may be several options and some of them may be great, but good luck getting Mr. Ginblossum to offer you any substantive advice on which bottle to take to that dinner party you're going to tomorrow night. Now, Beacon happens to be a very unique wine shop category (c), in that it is well-stocked, accessible, has a huge selection at a variety of price points, and the staff approach you offering to help and don't judge you if you haven't memorized the latest issue of Wine Spectator. For some of us, wine is enjoyment, a social luxury, and perhaps even a hobby. But not a way of life and certainly shouldn't involve a stressful buying experience. Beacon gets that. And for that reason, I keep going back. read more

This place is great. I've shopped there before, but truth be told I've never had a particular affinity to one liquor store over another. There are a few other good ones on the upper west side and I'm often shopping in other parts of town anyway. But I recently came in during the peak of the pre-Christmas rush looking for an obscure item for a Christmas gift. The manager, Tom Feaster, not only managed to special order a case of it for me, he got it delivered to the store the next day. Even in the height of Christmas chaos, he took the time to communicate with me constantly to update me on the order status. He couldn't have been nicer and he really saved the day for me. In these days of online shopping and big box chains, it's the personal interactions with people like Tom that make all the difference. Went to Beacon Wines after shopping across the street at Citarella. I needed a bottle of Marsala wine for my recipe and the cashier wouldn't let me use my credit card tap pay on my phone because the sale was less than $10.00. I think it came to $9 and change. There was no manager on duty. She let me walk out even after politely asking her again. Isn't this against bank policy to have a minimum for credit cards? I'm going to report them. The prices here are insane! A bottle of wine that PJ Wines charges $9 for is $15 here! Same exact wine! $50 for a champagne I can get for $37 elsewhere. They used to have really good customer service, which kinda made up for it, but now that is seemingly gone. The guy they have working on Sundays has no idea how to keep long-term regular customers. (Hint - you look up how much money they spend in your store, and act accordingly.) I'm switching over to one of the more customer-focused shops in the area - there are tons of them. As soon as you walk in, there's a shelf of "manager's picks" - bottles of wine in the $10-$20 range that are can't-miss, as opposed to stuff the store is simply trying to unload. Prices are the best in the 'hood (not saying much, I know - still Manhattan prices), and one time, I told a staffer I wanted to spend $20 on a Malbec, and he said there was no point, because he knew of a $12 bottle that was worth twice as much. Finally, for the size of the place, selection is very good, unless you're a two-buck-Chuck sipper, in which case you'll have to shell out a bit more than usual. read more
