The food is phenomenal. Everything tasted amazing and came out quickly. The portions were appropriate and the flavors were great. I cannot say enough how impressed I am at the Kitchen staff and how they executed the meal. I was a bit disappointed with the guest experience though. The staff serving us were relatively cold and somewhat dishonoring at times. I struggled to get the attention of the staff a few times in order to get things like water etc. I know times are incredibly tough given COVID and staffing shortages so I have grace for them for sure. I personally just feel like a bit more intentionality around guest respect and engagement would help elevate the guest experience. Things like speaking before reaching over a guest and being more careful when handing and taking away plates would help guests feel more comfortable. We also had a few entrees not be delivered to our table (which happens. No worries there) and when I asked the staff about it, they responded almost with frustration instead of apologizing and solving the problem. I've been to Mita's easily 20+ times. It's a great restaurant! I highly encourage reservations unless you'd like to sit at the bar (about 12 seats when available). Regardless, whether you're at the bar or at a table their margaritas are really fantastic and go well with everything. The staff is also very knowledgeable and passionate about every dish and drink so feel free to ask anything. I have been coming to this restaurant every year since it opened. A group of us, teachers, from all over the United States and Puerto Rico have enjoyed the food and their great service UNTIL TODAY! 10 of us arrive during happy hour and due to our size we were unable to eat in the bar area during happy hour. We asked the manager, Christa Ackerman, if she could give us Happy Hour prices on our pitchers of Sangria. She was extremely RUDE, rolling her eyes and VERY unprofessional. To the point that a person in our party reached out to shake her hand and she chose to give her back to him and walk away. We came for a company dinner and decided to try just about everything on the menu since there was 10 was of us. Some highlights: 1. Roasted cauliflower with figs: Absolutely delish with tender caulifower, pine nuts, and fresh fig halves 2. Spanish Omelette with black truffles and caramelized onions: Solid but I couldn't really taste the truffles. Slightly on the bland side but decent. 3. Beef short rib patties: The cilantro sauce is AMAZING. We literally used up every last plantain chip so we could finish the dip. It's the perfect blend of EVOO and crushed cilantro. 4. Burrata with heirloom tomatoes, croutons, and serrano ham bacon bits: This was a great salad and a unique version of a Caprese with extra soft burrata. Very good. 5. Blistered Shishito Peppers: Solid and a great starter. 6. Fried plantains: Crispy and a great app to snack on over cocktails. 7. Heart of palm salad with roasted marcona almonds, oranges, petite lettuces roncal cheese tossed in a sherry vinaigrette: Solid salad with a great dressing that paired well with the oranges and almonds. 8. Jicama and green mango salad with watercress, frissee, and cilantro vinaigrette: This was a bit on the tart side as the mangos are not ripe but it's a good app in the summer. 9. Cheese board: Loved the Machengo, Idiazbel, and Valdeon! 10. Serrano ham: This was just okay and a bit on the tough side. 11. Iberico ham: Fatty and slightly spicy. This was very flavorful. 12. Paella Valenciana: Absolutely amazing! The octopus was the best part: incredibly tender and flavorful. I think that I ate half the dish - among everything else! 13. Garlic marinated lamb loin with olive oil potatoes, sausage stuffed pequillo pepper fennel, and fennel: Loved the lamb loin which was incredibly tender and flavorful but the mashed potatoes were fantastic. Creamy and flavorful and absolutely delish when blended with the tahini cream drizzle. 14. Red fish and spanish octopus with shishito peppers, squash, chickpeas, and tomatoes: The octopus is just amazing! It really steals the show as it was cooked perfectly. 15. Grass-fed beef tenderloin with saffron rice cakes, leeks, spinach, in a Romesco sauce: Tender, medium rare tenderloin in a creamy, flavorful sauce. The rice cake was a perfect vehicle for sauce. 16. Watermelon sorbet: Solid but a bit too watery. 17. Banana nut ice cream: Fantastic! Very creamy and with embedded banana chips. 18. Roasted caramelized peaches with vanilla ice cream: Perfect blend of peaches and cream! 19. Chocolate tart: VERY rich and decadent. Great dish to share with friends so you can pair it with an extra dish of ice cream. 20. Red snapper ceviche with mango, passion fruit, chili, and chives: Solid but not the best ceviche that I have had. Alma de Cuba in Phila has a better version. Service was great and very attentive, although it took over 30 minutes to get our entrees. The location is very convenient and the ambiance is great - very modern with spacious seating. I seldom write less than 4-star reviews and from the start would like to say that service, food and ambiance were all good - 4-star level. What brings this down to a 3 (and I'm being generous) is value. I've been lucky to dine in Michelin-rated and tapas-style restaurants in different parts of the world and where the price tag is substantial. And I didn't mind paying crazy amounts of money for a meal (even a small meal) that is simply exquisite, where every single item on your plate was meticulously prepped just for you. Sadly, the only thing that was truly exquisite here was the price tag. One of the biggest shockers (I literally didn't believe it and had to ask the server a couple times, thinking it's just the first portion) was when a shareable 6-person paella costing $63 came out - which was sized like a regular main dish in any other restaurant, including Spain where I've tried paella many times. Again, fully understand the whole small plate-tapas style idea, but given the quality was just fine and not anything exquisite, paying for a 6-person plate of rice and shrimp more than $60 was a new experience for me. If you still decide to go, try Octupus - by far the best thing on the menu. Stay away from the dishes with chips - plantain chips are not made fresh, but are reheated from a large bin that was made earlier in the day. Hope this helps potential customers (especially if you travel and experienced Spanish cuisine) set expectations accordingly - you can find similar quality food at many places for half the price. First time at Mita's. Great location and the decor and atmosphere is very nice. We had a table right by the window overlooking 5th Street. Even though the restaurant was busy, the nose level was fine. We ordered two gin and tonics, Bombay Sapphire. Both of us thought something was wrong when we took a first sip. To me, it tasted as if it was a well drink gin. I thought the bartender must have used cheap gin by mistake. The waiter informed us that it was the tonic! Apparently, they make their own tonic and add spices. The flavor completely overpowered the taste of the gin. No point in ordering premier gin if you can't taste it. Who makes their own tonic water? Go and get some Schweppes. We replaced the gin with wine. We ordered a couple of tapas, followed by the chicken and salmon. The food was good, but a bit overpriced and the drinks expensive. The tapas was excellent, and if I go again I'll order a few tapas to share and stick with beer. I would have given Mita's 4 stars if not for the problem with the drinks. read more

Every single bit of food I put in my mouth here was five star! It was delicious! If I lived here this would be my spot. Started with the beef empanadas that were perfectly cooked and came with a great salsa verde tasting sauce. Practically locked the plate clean. Dinner had the chicken with perfectly crispy skin and juicy meat, on top of a garlicky chickpea hummus that again I ate every single bit of. My husband has the seafood stew which came with a similar salsa verde tasting broth. I got it all over my shirt due to excitement shoveling it into my fat mouth. I had high expectations for Mita's coming from Chef Salazar, and I'm happy to report that it was great! The tapas, sangria, and paella are perfect for group sharing, and I would highly recommend for a girls night out, date, or special occasion. First off, the restaurant is stunning. The extra high ceilings, Spanish tile, hanging lanterns, make this place look modern and cool, but still very comfortable. Ask to sit in a booth for a more private experience. Just reading the menu had my mouth watering. We came with a group of 4, and we ended up ordering the Paella Valenciana ($63, menu says serves 2-4, but it definitely serves 4 unless it's the only thing you get haha) and 5 tapas to share. We probably could have gotten away with the Paella and just 2-3 tapas, but I wanted to try everything! For tapas, we got the Short Rib Empanadas ($8), Duck Confit Empanadas Special ($8), Arepa with Chorizo and Queso ($8), Patatas Bravas ($6), and Shrimp Ceviche ($15). All of them were delicious, except next time I think I would skip the potatoes because they needed salt and could have been crispier. The ceviche was my favorite...The flavors were so well-balanced, only lightly acidic, and the plantain chips were crispy and paired great with the ceviche. Out of the empanadas, we preferred the short rib empanadas because that cilantro-chili sauce was mind blowing! We also loved the arepa (they kindly cut it in 4 wedges for us to make it easier to eat), which was surprisingly light and not oily since it was essentially a fried corn cake with chorizo and cheese on it. The paella was good, with crispy almost-burnt rice on the bottom, a light saffron flavor, and loaded up with a selection of seafood and meats. We especially liked the chorizo and the octopus in the paella. We left with full bellies and a bag of leftovers. After dinner, we all decided that next time we will get just a ton of tapas because even though the paella was super super yummy, we liked the tapas even more. Next time I will also save room for dessert because the dessert menu looked great (tres leches cake, I'm coming for you!). We ended up spending about $35 pp (including 1 beer and 2 sangrias), plus tip, so it's a little pricey, but I definitely think it was worth it for the delicious flavors, excellent service, and beautiful decor. Finally got to try this restaurant with the wife. We were able to make a reservation and were promptly seated. To get the reservation, we had to take an earlier time but the restaurant was not totally full while we were there. The restaurant is a fantastic space with high ceilings and lots of books and crannies for private table conversations. I liked that I could hear my wife but not the rest of the restaurant I really like the chef's other restaurant, Salazar, so I had high hopes for this one especially as they serve manchego and Jamon. You can't really go wrong with that combo. Unfortunately the food was a bit underwhelming especially for the price paid. We ordered the shrimp ceviche, the roast cauliflower tapas, pork belly with pineapple salsa, and the lamb loin entree. The shrimp ceviche was quite good served with fried plantains. It was pretty decent. The plantains were the highlight of the dish though. The pork belly and cauliflower tapas were good too but were on the salty side. There didn't seem to be anything too special about the pork belly. The cauliflower dish was very unique but seemed to not completely mesh together. The lamb loin was very tasty especially when combined with the potatoes. This dish was also a bit salty though. The dessert menu looked good although we were too stuffed to try it. I have my eye on the crema catalan. Our server was also really excellent. He was the right amount of attentive. I was so excited to try out Mita's as I heard the food was fabulous and the atmosphere was lively!!! As I looked in from the street, all that came to mind was "sexy"... Beautiful lighting, strategically placed tables and booths and sleek bar area. So the other reviews aren't kidding when they point out the plates are small! Here is what my friend and I ordered (along with our glasses of wine): Coliflor Asada, aceitunas, abellanas, granadas $7 Muslos de pollo frito $9 Vientre de credo salsa de pina, soja $9 Salmon Crudo $15 Our server suggested four plates would be enough for us, she obviously underestimated us! Food: We tried the cheese plate, empanadas and batatas for small plates. Our server helped us pick the various cheeses; I really liked the manchego and monte enebro. The empanadas were filled with tender beef, and paired with a wonderful cilantro sauce. I had the lomo de res, waygu beef, which was extremely tender and flavorful, with a wonderful side of varied potatoes. My wife had the salmon de rey, which was cooked perfectly and flavorful. We walked through the door at 6:45, and we're immediately seated. Our server was very helpful and gave great recommendations. This is the type of restaurant you go to when you care about spending time with your company than your looking at the clock. No, the service isn't slow. They actually let you rest and enjoy yourself without rushing. This is key. I was really impressed with the service here, to say the least. I do know they split their tips. This could account for the relaxed environment. The decor is gorgeous. It's airy and such a refreshment for Cincinnati. The tapas are good. I took one star off bc I felt there were techniques that could be employed to showcase the ingredients better. Let's start with this. Mita's is beautiful, whoever their interior designer was - let's be friends. Outside of ambiance and looks, this place also delivers. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because I didn't really get a chance to experience everything. I met a friend here for happy hour so we just snacked on apps and drinks, but what we DID have was great. The hits in my opinion? My husband and I booked a table for a Friday night excited to try the new Salazar but sadly, it didn't quite live up to my expectations. There wasn't anything horribly off and in fact, we got some of the best service we've ever gotten in Cincinnati and the location was very modern in decor with a ton of space giving guests lots of privacy for a downtown location, but the food was just not that impressive. We ordered the grilled cauliflower tapa, pork belly, shrimp ceviche, and the lamb. The highlight was probably the cauliflower. The combination of pomogranate, hazelnut and cauliflower was both creative and tasty. However, the pork belly was super fatty and one dimensional on the salty side. I've had significantly better shrimp ceviche at hole in the wall Mexican joints and the lamb ... unmemorable. Overall, I was disappointed given our high expectations going in. If I didn't have the benchmark, maybe I would have been closer to a 3.5 star but given the high price tag and the eclectic farm to table concept, I would have expected more yummy creative flare. It's not much food for the amount of money paid. Other downtown locations like Sotto or Boca may have been a better value when balancing taste, experience, and price tag. read more

We visited on the restaurant's month anniversary. There were definitely a few service related hiccups throughout the night, but that's not to be completely unexpected. I appreciate Chef Salazar's desire to do something a bit different and his attention to details definitely shows in this restaurant from the dinnerware to the decor. Well, it's official. I think I got gipped in the Grandma department. Bernie knew how to cook a mean casserole and make a strong Manhattan but she never made an empanada quite like Mita (It may have helped if she ever left the state of MI, can't hold that against her). I took my girl here for her birthday. We started off with a bottle of malbec and three apps: the chorizo cornmeal, cauliflower mix, and the beef empanadas. I think her favorite part of the night (yes I mean even the parts at home) was drinking the cilantro chili pepper sauce that came with the empanadas. AMAZING!! I came in here on a Saturday night with my sister and brother-in-law and we were able to find a seat at the bar right away. We ordered 3 small plates: ceviche del dia, trio de embutidos, and empanadas de res con pique. Between the 3 of us, we ended up trying all of the cocktails, including the red sangria. You can't go wrong with any of them. Our bartender, Andrew, made our experience 10 times better. He was awesome! I mentioned that it was my sisters birthday and he surprised her with a cocktail and cupcake that was on the house! We finished the night off with pastel del chocolate. Not sure if it was by design, but each came out of kitchen individually which allowed us to savor the intense flavor of each one. Followed with the paella which was good, but not great. Apple empanadas dessert was yummy. Except for having to wait for a table even with reservations, the service was very good. Waitress was knowledgable on both wine and cocktails and got us all into something we liked. She managed our crazy ordering...from an immediate "get us some food" (late night dinner, everyone was hungry!) to a questioning on other tapas, what about paella, did we get enough for everyone? I will definitely return and try other tapas and a different main. This place finally took me to a place I've not been to in Cincinnati in a looooooong time, a place where my tastebuds finally got a little xcitement, a little adventure. Maybe I was just primed for a good time thanks to the beauty of this restaurant. Situated in a cool modern building with floor to ceiling windows (I think...I might've enjoyed the wine a bit too much), it's swathed in sumptuous Moorish details: Moroccan style lanterns, rich colors, tilework, and elemental accents. I love many of the restaurants in OTR, and love the architecture and vibe down there, but this place is so urbane and cool--I actually felt like I was in another city for a couple of hours, and this is a good thing. Every plate we had was spot on: tart, herby ceviche with plump chunks of shrimp and odd chewy hominy that somehow worked, empanadas, tortilla (omelette) with a generous dusting of shaved truffle, and a perfectly bittersweet almond-crusted tart were some of the highlights. We also really liked the fried plantains (I can't remember what came with them) with smoked paprika. Service was decent--knowledgeable and appropriately warm. Our server was very good first off; very conversational and gave us some good recommendations, such as the empanadas and the octopus dish (which everyone should try). I went with my husband for my birthday, and we will definitely return. We tried several dishes, and really weren't disappointed in anything. In order of preference: shrimp/clam chowder (the broth is outstanding and addictive, the shrimp meaty yet tender), empanadas (it's the green sauce, but it's also the beef WITH the green sauce, which they could bottle and sell), salad with roasted carrots and cumin-yogurt dressing, mixed ceviche with plaintain crisps, gambas (shrimp in a fantastic garlic oil), and tostones, which really isn't at the bottom, either. Drinks were on point, as well - super creative without being obnoxiously pretentious. The pisco sour was memorable, and my husband's El Luchador was surprisingly fresh and spicy - really great stuff! Our server also recommended a *fantastic* Tempranillo wine, Conta Muda, that was unlike any I'd had before, and wrote down details so I could hunt down a bottle later. Beyond the excellent food, our service was just right - not too hover-y, but very attentive, and the staff genuinely seems to believe in, and love, this place and all it offers. Our server, Max, was authentic, enthusiastic and truly concerned about helping us get the most out of our first visit. This is a rare treat and one we greatly appreciated as parents to young kids - we don't get the chance to dine out very often and it is a true disappointment when we go to the trouble to arrange care for them and then wind up not enjoying our time out or getting an unremarkable meal. I also love the concept and the gorgeous artwork featuring Jose Salazar's grandmother, Mita, that graces the entry way. The restaurant really did put us in mind of the time we spent in Barcelona several years ago. I went to Mita's last week during lunch and I've thought about it a handful of times since (the linger factor alone warrants a good score). We got the Tostones (smashed green plantains with saffron-pimenton aioli) to share and I had the Caldo Verde (Portuguese potato, chorizo, and kale stew) to start my first tryst with Jose Salazar's newest culinary endeavor, featuring a Spanish- and Latin American-inspired menu. For my entree, I decided on the Cuban, which was delicious, if a bit much for lunch. (I took half to go.) As I mentioned, our service was really good. Our server was attentive, kept our glasses filled, and timed our courses pretty well, considering we were there for lunch and needed to get back to work. The prices aren't cheap, unfortunately, but I would highly recommend Mita's for a date night or special occasion. The food was delicious but service issues damped our experience. The food tasted great and I didn't mind the higher prices for smaller portions. While waiting for our reservation (30+ minutes late), we ordered drinks at the bar. The bartender quickly said "just a moment" and then avoided our group for 25 minutes. I mean actually ignored us. They didn't hear our "excuse me" and they were quick to look down or into their notebook when walking by. We were seated at the bar and the bar wasn't busy. The bartenders were more interested in cutting limes than taking orders. Once we finally ordered, multiple drink orders were wrong. Disappointing way to start the night. We called earlier in the day to buy a bottle of champagne for our table and we were told the bottle would be waiting for us at the table (a little incognito surprise for our group birthday dinner). After we sat down, no bottle. The waiter took a round of drink orders and still no champagne. After the second round of drinks and it had been 30+ minutes, I had to go up front to ask about the bottle. Dismissive at best and I was told it was coming soon. We cancelled it but I have a feeling it was never coming out. Glad we called ahead and paid for it. Note to self - don't surprise people here with rounds of drinks or bottles of wine because it might not come. These are just a few of the fumbles of the night. read more

Place was amazing! Bartender was very informative of the menu and drinks, and seems to be very enthusiastic when he shakes drinks. Wish there was more food offered then just small dishes. 10/10 on kabobs, meat pies, and sliders! read more
