I love the attention to detail and craftsmanship involved in every piece. We have purchased a wallet, dog collar, dog leash, and watch band and have been extremely impressed with our items. They have an international client base which shows how sought after their services are. Mitchell's leather is a part of Third Ward and Milwaukee tradition, and though the signage and entrance is a bit dated, you can't not be impressed by what you discover inside. I came here not to buy any leather goods, but just some leather for my own goods and was very impressed with both the selection and service, especially during the week of Christmas. Beyond that, their products are amazing, and the factory is a part of Third Ward history. I would suggest that you check out their website to get an idea of what they make, who they are, and their general philosophy, then stop in some time for a tour of the factory. Their bags can get pricey since they're hand made and custom made, but they also make belts, wallets, and valet trays (which you may have seen at Third Ward festivals). If nothing else, stop in for a tour. David and his mother like to show off the factory, and it's really great to have a place like this in the Third Ward. read more

I had another 5 star experience with Mitchell Leather this week. Even though it was near closing time and in the middle of their busy season, I got the personal attention that makes this place shine. The odd hours are because this small family business is getting a ton of orders over the Internet these days, and they spend a lot of time making the product. The cool thing is that if I'd needed something made up with different leather, they would have it ready in a week. One of the neat things about buying in store is that they try to use cool one off hides for their signature pieces. While they have their line of product, you can get some really interesting leather if you go in person. read more

My valet tray (Horween Dublin in Italian Brown) arrived last yesterday (less than one week delivery) and it is way nicer in person than the photos on their website. They have a video on their website describing the way they manufacture their trays. Upon handling the tray, I immediately felt the quality they put in making this piece. While I haven't visited their factory and store, I really appreciate the quality and craftsmanship in creating this beautiful piece. I recently purchased the Mitchell money clip wallet in brown Chromexel leather without logo. I was so pleased with my new wallet that I had to send Dave Mitchell a thank you email, and now I've discovered I can also leave a Yelp review. The wallet is of the finest leather I have ever owned. In fact, I did not know leather could be this fine. I can only decribe the feel of it as "creamy". The card slots are perfectly sized and cut, and the money clip design is pure ingenuity. For the last 7 years I carried my cards and cash in a single money clip, and while I liked the thinness I was never quite satisfied with the organization. The money clip wallet was the perfect solution, providing a thin, functional, well organized wallet with the added bonus of being absolutely beautiful. I've been searching high and low for a standard, billfold wallet made with shell cordovan. The only one I could find online that looked any good to me (design and workmanship-wise) was from Brooks Brothers for $388, sometimes on sale for $291. I also saw some historic posts that listed an Allen Edmonds version for $108, but that must have been close-out pricing as they no longer offer that item anymore. Then I luckily stumbled across Mitchell Leather. He does not offer a standard billfold, but rather a money clip wallet. It wasn't exactly what I was looking for, but for a very, very fair $99 it was definitely worth a try. After eagerly awaiting its arrival, receiving it, and "trying it on for size"... I LOVE IT! I own a couple of pair of Allen Edmonds shell cordovan shoes and this wallet is easily on par with them. I ordered it in burgundy and it's gorgeous! The card slots are a generous size too, so you can easily fit 2 credit cards comfortably into one slot and it's no hassel getting them out when needed. That surprised me. The money clip approach is something new for me, but I have no doubt I'll get used to it. Just as in his online videos, the money slides out quite easily without dislodging the other bills. And no, the clip is not loose and the bills only come out if purposely pulled. The workmanship is impecable. The other offerings that I've seen online (pics) are unsightly and very amateurish looking, especially when it comes to the stitching. Now, while some may like these styles, (ex. tan stitching on a dark colored wallet, or flaps that have snaps), they're not for me. I like something subtle and classy, not something that would fit right in at the local Renaissance Fair. The stitching with this wallet is close to the edge, dyed the same color as the leather, very uniform, subtle and neat. Plus the edges of the wallet, where the interior and exterior pieces meet is smooth and tight. No gaps or raw leather edges. Delivery turnaround was also very fast! I ordered on a Wednesday. The charges/shipping happened the next day, and delivery was on Saturday. 4 days from order to delivery! Plus, lovingly packaged. I would recommend Mitchell Leather to everyone! read more

I was looking for a wallet and stumbled upon the website for this store. I decided to pay the store a visit to take a look at what there is to offer. I was surprised at the facade of the store, but don't let that fool you. Yes, the hours for the store are odd, but that is because everything is handmade and you can talk to the owner of the store, who hand makes essentially everything sold in store. Really nice quality, Third Ward manufactured leather goods. I bought a briefcase from Dave's dad about 10 years ago and continue to marvel at the quality of the construction. If you are interested, talk to Dave about getting a tour of the factory. Note the historic printing on the stairwell "no spitting" in reference to fears of tuberculosis transmission many, many years ago. He also sells some nice luggage. read more

Havent visited Dave at his workshop, but I own one of his wallets, and it is one my most cherished possessions. The fact that he makes every single one by hand and the ingenious money clip spring is locally manufactured in Milwaukee, using Chicago Horween leather, if you still own a Fossil or other made in China mass produced wallet, retire it immediately and do yourself a favor and get one of these. Youll be glad you did. I own the Dublin Leather in walnut and it has patina'd into a nice reddish brown with darker edges. Gorgeous. read more

I had ordered the card wallet about a week back, and when it arrived I was struck by the craftsmanship, quality, and the design. And the fact that it wasn't what I had ordered. It was a money-clip wallet instead. It was no big deal, and I thought about just keeping the money-clip wallet given the quality. But I called early the next day and left a message explaining what had happened and asked to trade in what I'd received for what I'd ordered. Rather than have me send the money-clip wallet back in, Dave Mitchell called me within hours and comped me the money-clip wallet. Just like that. I protested because it was an honest mistake, but he wouldn't have it. I've more often had a retailer deign to sell a schlub like me their products, let alone do something like this. Bottom line is I unconditionallt recommend David Mitchell and Mitchell Leather to anyone, anywhere in the market for best crafter leather briefcases available. My experience with David Mitchell was second to none. Mr. Mitchell is a gentleman and professional and kept me informed throughout the process of the build. He preferred to call and talk with me as his client before email which impressed me and is a rarity these days. My customer service experience was outstanding and again, I recommend this company to anyone. The briefcase was completed 2 weeks ahead of schedule and is by far, the finest work I have owned or had the opportunity to inspect. Well beyond that of Custom Hide, Saddleback, Ghurka or Mulholland, all of which I have owned at one time or another. Although I wasnt able to do so, Mr. Mitchelle told me that clients who are local are always invited to come inspect the work in progress anytime they like. Also, clients are invited to tour the workspaces, hand pick their own leather for the build and modify plans to fit their needs. Quite the experience. I couldnt be happier. Thanks David.
