The braids I had did not hurt at all, and I would often forget I had them on my head (my entire hair was up, not down). And my braids lasted the entire Burning Mud 2023. This is what I wrote the night after I came back from April's hair salon: "My braids are the type of braids that go along your head, not the ones that hang down. I have small braids on the sides (above my ears) and then I have one large French braid in the middle. My scalp is non-stop throbbing from pain. She saw me curling up in the chair in pain (the entire time) and continued to braid them insanely tight. She was cracking up and kept repeating some phrase that basically communicated how they needed to be tight. I am a white girl who has no idea how braids should be done. So I believed April, but I thought they would stop hurting later. I did have braids last year, also for the burn, and nothing was hurting. I have had surgery done on my big toe without anesthesia, I had four premolars extracted when I was a kid without anesthesia, and April braiding my hair is No. 3 most painful experience in my life. For hair?! Is that normal? I am in so much painful discomfort it is difficult to put into words. I am supposed to pack for Burning Man, and I literally cannot do anything because I don't know what to do with myself. I just noticed Yelp deleted my review and considering there are so many negative reviews on here…read more(which left me appalled) I am re-writing mine. Also, check the bottom where it says "filtered" and you will find that there are over 39 reviews that are positive 5 star reviews, which Yelp filters for some reason. I've gotten my extensions done by Alicia many times. I had extensions in for over a year in which she would maintain. I NEVER experienced any negative experience with Alicia. If anything she would always go above and beyond for all her clients even doing house calls if they couldn't come to her salon. I haven't seen her new salon, but I am sure it's fantastic. I have recommended her to a lot of my friends and they were all thrilled with her services. Her business has flourished from a start up to a wonderful salon that offers many services, I am not sure how that would've been possible if she provides this so called "poor service." The sad part about the Internet is that it allows anyone to write a poor review without expressing their concerns to the business owner. I am sure that if they would've talked to Alicia she would've tried to accommodate them any way she can. I can't recommend her enough and please go in for a consult. I only asked for 3 or 4 hot pink extensions - just as accents in my hair. The consultation was fine. I was a little surprised that they had a dog running around the salon - but hey, it's out of someone's house and I like dogs so it wasn't a big deal. When they called me back to make my appointment after the hair came in, I couldn't hear anything on the phone because the dog was barking like mad in the background. I asked them to call me back when it was quieter because I couldn't hear anything, and I was at work myself so I couldn't really be yelling into the phone to have them hear me. I never heard back from them and they never responded to my emails after that. You'd think people would be trying to get as much business as they can since there is a recession going on - especially for a service like extensions which is really just something people want, not something they need. Takeshi worked on my highlights, then cut my bf's hair while I was getting a head massage, then back to finishing up cutting my hair. I love our conversations while Takeshi cuts my hair. There was never a moment that I felt uncomfortable. He and his staff were SUPER NICE and POLITE. With highlights and a cut, the bill came out to be $190 (including tips). To me, this is pretty pricey for any hair cuts, but according to my bf Takeshi has given me a great discount. Regardless of the price, I would come back again. Initially, he seemed annoyed that I had a groupon and also wanted color on top of my cut even though I clearly mentioned that in my text to him when making the appt. He later seemed to relax and open up and I had a great time chatting with him. We didn't really discuss which color I wanted. I basically said brown and he mixed up a pretty dark brown. He is great with thick curly hair like my own. He didn't seem overwhelmed or stressed about it at all and did an amazing job. It's obvious he knows what he is doing and is very precise about everything. The cut, color and blow out took about 2 hours. He blow dries your hair to make sure the cut looks good. Parking is annoying in the area but they have some public lots that are free for the first two hours but afterwards it starts adding up.
