This place had a huge selection of stuff. Everything from gag gift items, to baby shower goodies, to kitchen gadgets, and games. Ended up finding a few of what I needed, and some of what I didn't. Like other similar shops, the shelves are crammed with more than you can imagine, but at least there are sections to guide you through their treasure trove. I was particularly appreciative of the complimentary gift wrapping when I purchased a bag for all my goodies but I wasn't totally impressed with the quality of some of the items for sale. Mixed Bag reminds me of my mother-in-law. Lots of colorful flags, spinner things and windchimes to hang on the back patio. Inside, the place is crammed floor-to-ceiling with gadgets, games, knick-knacks, beads, and other good cluttery stuff for your house. I got a bell for my bike for $4. I like it. It's kind of a clean version of Spencer's Gifts, mixed with the randomness of the first floor of Evangeline's Costume Mansion. They have the weirdest stuff, for example a mechanical pig that rolls around on the floor and sadistically giggles when it detects motion. I will not shop at Mixed Bag again because of their $10 minimum sale policy to use a debit or credit card. I have shopped at Mixed Bag for several years, and have never noticed their sign, because I usually spend much, much more then $10. When I handed the lady my debit card to pay for an $8 greeting card, she pointed at the sign on the counter and suggested I buy something else (to make the sale worth their while). I told her never mind, I'll go somewhere else. I found the same card at Target, and they were happy to take my debit card. read more

After shopping at this little store around the corner, I was surprised at the selection they could fit in the small space. The variety was fantastic. After reading some of the reviews I was shocked at the bad stories I read about the employees there. As a frequenter of stores for over '40' years, I think I know something about how a customer should be treated, and the staff was personable, helpful and friendly in helping me find what I needed and helping find the ideal selection. This place is interesting. They have everything from gifts for a baby to gifts for your mom to maybe for your grandma. The place reminds me a lot of a hallmark except no holiday memorabilia. It's a bit overwhelming when you come in because everything is unorganized. However, its a great place for knick knacks. This was my first time and my last time at this store. I found a few things that I liked and I lined up to pay. I was unaware of where to line up so I walked up to the counter and was waiting behind another customer. I waited there about 10 minutes. Finally the snarky cashier tells me I'm suppose to lineup behind some red arrow they have hanging in the ceiling. She made me feel like an idiot and looked down to me like I was unworthy to stand in her presence. Give me a break lady. I like to support local businesses but not if they treat their customers this way. I don't appreciate being treated like an errant child. I do not agree that this place is like Evangalines. Evangalines to me is a bit tacky, but Mixed Bag has an unbelievable assortment of unique gifts in all price ranges. This is definitely the place to go when you have no idea what to buy someone; you will definitely find it here at any price point. I have been going to the mixed bag for years and I love it. It always has the most fun and unique nick nacks for any occasion. I live in midtown so I am able to frequent Mixed bag and the staff has always been helpful and curtious. (To the previous negative comments about the staff- the road goes two ways. Having worked retail I know how INCREDIBLY frustrating it is to have people come in 2 minutes before closing- not cool. If you want respect then you'll have to be respectful to begin with). I have never had a negative experience with the people who work at mixed bag, they have always been great! Mixed bag does accept credit/debit but the purchase amount must be above 10$. This can be inconvenient, but you have to understand this is a small business trying to make it in California. Support your local businesses here and work with them! I love this place. It's right near my work, which is dangerous. They have an amazing selection of seasonal window clings, ornaments, wrapping paper, great gifts for babies and lots of other things I enjoy shopping for (because in my heart, I am a 75 year old grandma). The staff is always friendly and the store is stuffed with cute chatchkas that will entertain you for hours... that is, if you, like me, appreciate things like decorative seasonal window clings. Wonderful store for midtown. Their definitely needs to be that one store with knick-knacks and doo-dads novelty items. Just like the few stores if Old Sac, Mixed Bag carries all those items and more. Giftables, novelties, gardening and more. Super fun to look around in, and a great place for gifts. This year I went crazy at Christmas for lavender lotion, cute baby stuff for my new nephew, small cooking gadgets, and tree ornaments. One year I bought a bunch of purse holders. If you buy a gift bag (even a cheap paper one) they wrap it up pretty for you with tissue and ribbons. I had a very unpleasant experience with one of their employees. I loved the store and the items it carries but I'm not planning on ever going back to shop there. One of the two ladies working there was very rude to us, yelling from across the parking lot that we couldn't park there because she thought we weren't going to shop at her store. As we were getting out of our car, a couple of napkins accidentally flew out, so she yelled : "pick your garbage"! She assumed that we were littering her parking lot and that we weren't going to shop at her store. All the unique, atypical gifts in the world are not worth the unbelievable rudeness of the staff in this store. Being that the owner herself is rude, it is little wonder that she has abrasive, discourteous and negative workers. The store is so damn jam-packed that you can't move without knocking something off the shelf. And what is with the handwriting of the receipt, wasting a huge piece of paper for sometimes a card purchase and the time it takes to do it is a waste of MY time. New and friendlier gift shops are opening and anywhere is better than this store. Getting a present here is convenient but their high prices and being treated like they couldn't care less about your patronage tells me all I need to know.
