2026 Birthday Series -- Stop #5: Toro Toro…read more I'm kicking off a series reviewing all the places I visited to redeem my birthday goodies in July 2026. Along with an overall rating, each spot gets scored on redeemability (how easy it is to claim) and actual value. Toro Toro Redeemability: 10/5 (no requirement - just ID!!, no additional purchase was required) Actual value: 5/5 (a free roll of maki!!) Taro Taro was AWESOME when it comes to birthday goodie. While limited, you can still choose very special rolls such as Rainbow Maki, double salmon or sunset maki (the one I got). The staff was very friendly and generous about the redemption, who also carefully packed your free rolls in a beautiful box, ready for you to enjoy. The maki itself was super delicious, which had actual crab meat in it. I was very surprised when I bit into it as I was expecting imitation crab or some sort. And the soy sauce was my favourite kind (dashi soy sauce) - I'll def be back to try their other items & goodies. It seems it's on the pricier end considering it's "take out" nature, doe?

So when he did go in the place was not busy and they hadn't even started the order. He eventually came home with it and yes presentation was nice. Quality was the fish was good but overall I feel that everything just tasted the same. Nothing was outstanding to me and maybe it was that I didn't pick the right items.

this is a popular local chain serving "western style" sushi. If you are a purist, this is not for…read moreyou. I think it may be Korean-run/owned. Their menu had some Korean dishes too like Bulgogi and LA galbi. I came for dinner with some relatives. We ordered a small combination platter for 4 and separate soba combo with tempura and sashimi. Food items: edamame - standard frozen stuff heated up. Needed more salt. 3/5. miso soup - watery, nothing in it. no tofu chunks, no green onions, etc etc. 2/5. Sashimi: atlantic salmon - pretty standard. some very sloppy knife work though, with uneven pieces and random thin belly pieces Tuna - looked like maguro, ahi, albacore - tasteless sadly. It had the right colors but the texture was somewhat mushy and didnt taste like much. Some pieces were semi-frozen yellow-tail - again, semi-frozen and tasteless octopus - a bit tough, really thick cut, served very cold and a bit off-putting Escolar - the "white tuna" that isnt actually Tuna and really just cheap Escolar that is awful for you. This is my tell-tale sign of a really low quality sushi place. sashimi overall - 2/5. At least nothing had gone bad. nigiri: atlantic salmon, maguro, albacore, and a mystery seared one with white flesh - I suspect this is Escolar. None of the rice was seasoned, there was no wasabi in any of them. The fish slices were sloppy too. One piece of tuna nigiri had 2 strips of tuna on it instead of a properly cut and formed slice. nigiri overall 2/5. green dragon roll - tempura shrimp inside with lots of avocado - it tastes the way you think it would. Heavy on the tempura batter though which got soggy fast. very one-dimensional. All you taste is avocado and mayo. 2.5/5. salmon lover roll - this is a bigger roll with spicy salmon inside and on top. Heavy on the mayo, also one dimensional. 2.5/5. Crazy Crab roll - this is a roll with imitation crab+mayo inside, then with a mound of more imitation crab+mayo stacked on top of each roll slice. This was just gross. You might as well spoon a jar of mayo and eat some imitation crab sticks. 1/5. Not a single bit of real crab in this. there were 3 pcs of california roll (with a chunk of more imitation crab stick in it typical of Toronto rather than the mayo crab salad in other places) and 3 pcs of spicy tuna roll. Both average for this type of place, 2.5/5. Soba noodles - the noodles were the dry kind they cooked and to my surprise it was not overcooked - texture was pretty good as far as dry noodles go. The sauce was served in a bowl made of ice. A bit of green onion and wasabi on the side. The ice bowl was the worst part of this dish - it just melted really fast and diluted the sauce to taste like nothing. Didnt help that their serve was so slow and it kept on melting while we waited. Tempura - 2 shrimp, 1 broccoli, 1 yam, 1 squash, and another veg piece i forgot. Thick batter, but crispy. Sauce was average. 3/5. free dessert of sliced (sour) oranges. Service: this was a huge problem. VERY slow. Each table has a call button but it was useless. Nobody ever came when we rang the bell (and yes it does work; we can hear the bell). We still had to flag them down. Even then half the time they forgot what we asked for. And we arent even being demanding. They completely forgot to give us utensils and dishes but brought the food out so we just sat there watching the ice melt into our soba sauce until they came after the 3rd reminder. They seemed overwhelmed and understaffed. Plenty of free parking out front in the plaza. The restaurant itself is clean enough but their seating arrangement is odd. They have dividers making it look like booths but really they are just chairs around a table. A bit awkward to climb in and out but doable. They do offer really big portions of food and you wont leave hungry. Overall, the quality here is severely lacking if you want decent quality sushi. It isnt dangerous though - nothing was foul or rotten/gone bad. Nothing about the sushi here is remotely authentic. If youve had good authentic sushi from Japan or sushi mecca's like LA or Vancouver, you will be appalled at what they serve here. But if you want typical "westernized" sushi then this place is similar to a typical AYCE sushi joint, except its not AYCE. I cannot recommend this place. I can safely say I will never be back here again.

The fish is always impeccably fresh, with rolls and nigiri bursting with clean, balanced flavors that hit just right every time. Servers checked in on us often. Food was good. I really enjoyed the Eel Pancake - probably the best one I've had! We got complimentary ice cream at the end of our meal. I opted for the black sesame but it wasn't for me. Something about it tasted off - maybe too creamy or milky? Either way - food was decent though!

We were told that a booster seat was available, but staff refused to provide it because it was being held for another reservation that was expected to arrive later. As parents of a young child, we found this unacceptable. A family already seated in the restaurant should not be denied a basic child-safety accommodation in favor of a future reservation. Rather than trying to find a solution, staff made us feel unwelcome and dismissed our concerns. This was not about special treatment. It was about providing a safe seating option for a toddler while we were dining. Customer service and common sense were both lacking during this visit. Based on this experience, I would not recommend this restaurant to families with young children. I hope management reviews its policies and provides better training on how to handle situations involving child safety and family customers.

Pros: - Friendly customer service- very generous with the extra soy sauce, wasabi, ginger etc - The ingredients tasted fresh. - lots of selection of rolls and different platters Some areas of improvement: - The size and technique: the rolls are extremely large here. I imagine it would be difficult to roll them tightly and pieces either fell apart or was difficult to fit in a bite. Personally, I'd prefer smaller pieces although it's clear that they are very generous. - Presentation: rolls were fit snug. This was an issue because they would stick to one another and cause them to break apart. A bigger containers with more spacing should fix this issue. - The rolls were drizzled in their special sauce which was tasty but it also caused all the rolls to taste the same. Overall great! I'd come back and try their sushi and sashimi. I trust the quality of their fish and to me, that's the most important aspect of any sushi bar.
