Hug Sushi is a takeaway sushi restaurant located in Times Square, closer to the Hwy 7 side. It's underneath Dahu Hotpot & Dimsum. I strongly recommend ordering online or by phone ahead of time, as they don't have anywhere to wait if you order in person. They can also be busy during peak times, around 5-7pm. The fish is fresh and the service is good. Hug Sushi has never let me down before and I actually do prefer them over other takeaway sushi restaurants in the area. I had no idea this place existed until my friend recommended it. It's a small restaurant with take out in Time Square plaza. They offer delivery through delivery apps like uber eats. The staff who took my order over the phone spoke kindly and confirmed everything. Order was ready quickly. I ordered green dragon roll 10 pieces and torched salmon roll 8 pieces. Food was delicious - even though the "torched salmon" tasted more like grilled/fried. My other half and I have been exploring around trying to find a sushi place that strikes a balance between value and quality. Needless to say we have had a number of disappointments and usually end up back at Ai Sushi, as many other reviewers have mentioned. We have tried the more premium sushi platters from our local area and were left largely unimpressed for the price point and what was offered. Going out on a limb we found Hug sushi in place of where the old Ichiban sushi place was. A quick browse of their online menu showed that their price point was not bad, in fact quite on point with Ai Sushi, and looking at pictures online we decided to give them a chance, and we were pleasantly surprised. During initial phone order, they were quick to pick up. While placing the order they noted that they were out of Uni for the platter we were ordering and would we like to substitute something. Bonus points for being up front and informing us and giving us a choice rather then just not telling us at all and substituting something random. Order was ready in 20 minutes, and was exactly as described in their online menu. Sushi was just the right amount of rice. The salad included the dressing on the side which we appreciated. Back again at Hug Sushi. I saw mentions of 10% off with cash in previous reviews but they no longer offer a cash discount. In fact the whole place is just cash / debit. Prices still seem reasonable though - $11.49 for 10 piece red dragon roll and $7.49 for Hug roll. Good place to satisfy your sushi cravings but of course don't expect too much given the price range. We usually get the 80 piece sushi/sashimi/roll platter for $53. We just call ahead, which usually takes them 30mins to make, and come in for pick up. If you're paying in cash you get 10% off, but they do take debit cards as well. The sushi pieces are quite fresh, and I'm a huge fan of the jumbo prawn and scallop sashimi that you don't find at many similar takeout sushi joints. Found another good place to order on Uber Eats. Although the sushi was fresh, it lacked a bit of sweetness...the maki rolls were really good and we really enjoyed the unagi don (BBQ Eel on rice). The sashimi is quite fresh and not fishy at all, but at the same time I can't say they are super flavorful. salmon is fatty and good thickness too. The sushi has some room for improvement. There is not too much rice for the sushi. And the rice lacks the vinegar flavor but it's pretty common for sushi party trays take out. The Maki again I think the rice can be better but the size and rice ratio are good. If you are familiar with Ai Sushi, then you'll know what you're getting at Hug Sushi. They basically have the same offering (particularly the party trays) at similar price points, serving the same market (affordable sushi with decent quality) I have been to both Ai sushi and Hug Sushi a number of times, and my personal preference goes to Hug Sushi. First reason is the the quality is a bit better at Hug Sushi. Not only in terms of food quality, but the skill at rolling. The rolls are always perfect at Hug sushi. The rolls from Ai Sushi, on the other hand, are often poo poo and definitely need more training in how to roll. "pee pee poo poo" as Kevin O'Leary would call it. Secondly, the service is much better at Hug Sushi. More often than not, I've been left bewildered regarding the service at Ai Sushi as if they don't care about their customers and they're sloppy with how they deal with things. Hug Sushi service has always been great thus far. Lastly, the wait times. It seems like no matter what you order from Ai Sushi, there will be an hour wait. When you arrive, you wait even longer. If it's a weekend or holiday, it can take 2+ hours to get your order. Hug Sushi doesn't do this... they actually manage their logistics properly. All in all, try them both and see which one fits you best. read more

I live this place. It's been my go too place for sushi ever since I tasted it., The presentation is nicely done. I always take the combo menu 802- 35 pieces with something else on the side and it get me full every time! The presentation time is fairly quickly. And the service is good. The salmon was not fresh at all.. the colouring was so off that after eating one piece I just threw the rest out. The sushi was okay. I was looking for a decently priced sushi place that wasn't too far along highway 7 and came across Hug Sushi. The menu and platters reminded me of Ai Sushi from the rolls that were included to how the platters were styled. We opted for the 80pcs for $53. If you pay cash, you get 10% off. We ordered ahead of time so there was no wait when we got there. The platter came with an assortment of sashimi of the usuals (sashimi, tuna, tilapia etc.) and some more premium items like scallop, octopus and large shrimp. The rolls included a California roll, spicy salmon, green dragon, red dragon, a salmon with avocado roll and a avocado cucumber roll. I really enjoyed the rolls as I found their sushi rice super fragrant with the black and white sesame seeds. They also top off some of their rolls with orange and black caviar which is a nice added touch. I do find their rolls and nigiri light on the rice side compared to AI sushi so it's a matter of preference. I like a bit more rice in my rolls. We ordered this platter for a party of three and were about 75% full. So if you are a bigger sushi eater you may need more. Overall, I enjoyed this sushi platter for their variety, price, taste and minimal wait time. If you are in the area and looking for some cheap, but delicious sushi, check this place out. read more

Reason for Visit: Found this on Yelp and decided to give this take out sushi a try. Ai Sushi is getting kind of boring. Menu: So I opted for their 45 pieces sushi/sashimi tray for $40 (total including tax as there was a cash 10% discount). As you can see in the photo, the value is there as there is even scallops/ unis. No rolls at all so honestly speaking, this tray was great value for $40. You pay a tiny bit more ~$7 ish than the usual assorted tray but you get a lot more and no filler rolls. The fish was fresh, sashimi was very generous and as other Yelpers mentioned, the rice to fish portion was great. Only thing is I do find their rice falling off a bit, but that might had just been me keeping it in the refrigerator for an hour. You technically aren't supposed to refrigerate sushi rice so maybe I screwed it up. It is way too hot these days. Service: Take out service was efficient. Personally, I feel there's a lot of trust that goes into trying a new sushi place as handling is very important with all the raw products being served. Does anyone feel the same? With that being said, I recently gave Hug Sushi a try for the first time after seeing all the positive reviews on Instagram and was quite happy. As you can see, presentation looked pretty good. Overall, the contents tasted fresh, portions were fair, and variety was satisfying as well for the 40 pcs ($28.50, with the current 10% off). The ratio of fish-to-rice was also pretty good. One of my favorite things was the spicy-ness of their spicy mayo! My favorite roll is spicy salmon so this is crucial for me personally. Delicious. Improvements? Would have liked the maki to be more tightly rolled and since they don't use tempura bits for the crunchy topping, instead they use crunch "puffs", they got soggy and lost their texture. Still doesn't beat my favorite sushi takeout spot (Ai Sushi) when factoring all of the quality, freshness, and price...
