The down fall of this business are the 2 females that handle the office. I called them back in May due to a horrible moldy/mildew smell in my basement. I was initially quoted $1300. The gentleman came out an assessed the work, at which time, I was quoted $2000. They came in, ripped out the carpet, padding, and drywall. Fixed the problem from both the outside and inside of the house. Everything seemed sealed. It rained for almost a week during the time of the repairs so I started smelling the mildew again...but this time in the another area of the basement. I contacted them & the guy came out. He said he didn't find anything. Once everything was completely dry, I called to get a quote on replacement of the drywall, molding, & padding. I was quoted $385...for one, ONE, 1...count on your hands, one sheet a drywall (I probably only needed 2 sheets). When I complained about the cost, my emails & calls were never returned. Needless to say. My basement has that same smell again in the area where "he didn't find anything" and I am still in need of the drywall etc. Good thing I didn't purchase that expensive drywall. Now that money can go to another company to fix whatever is causing the smell now. If you want a half-assed job done with piss-poor customer service, then this is the company for you. read more

I have a couple of mixed emotions. Overall I was quite happy with the job MJ Home Services did. Let me first say the job that Mike did was great--the carpet looks excellent. The only issue was that I was told on the phone that the price was $25 a room. That's a great price, and was why I chose them. However, when the technician got there (in his unmarked Lexus), the price ended up being $195 for my two small carpeted rooms (after bargaining down from $330). Basically, it was $25 a room for a "once-over" cleaning (surface level). It doubled the price for a "deep cleaning" (plus about a million other options... teflon coating, disinfecting, etc.). I wish I had been told this in advance. Most frustratingly, I was told that if I actually wanted the carpet clean all the way to the baseboards, it would cost an extra $2 per linear foot for a scrubbing fee, which basically was an extra $140. My question is, who DOESN'T want the whole carpet cleaned? "Yes sir, please leave a gross gray dust line around the edge... That's how I like it!" If I had been told the price in advance, I would have been much happier. As it was, it felt more like dealing with a car salesman, and was a little uncomfortable because I really didn't know what I was doing. ("cash only, please." "how much CAN you afford?" "I'll lower it to this price, and if you want to throw in a cash tip, that would be great.") The whole experience would have been much better and felt less shady if I had known exactly what I was paying for up front. Not fun to be quoted a price of $50 and then be told it was $330 (after the super heavy machine was already hauled up two flights of stairs--clever!), only to have to haggle. read more

This company is great! My gutters, siding, and roof needed some repair work as part of an agreement for sale. The job is complicated because the bump out on my rowhouse only allows about a foot of clearance to do most of the work. John came out and assessed the situation on New Year's Eve. He has an amazing spirit, and he made me feel completely comfortable with him AND then also gave me the best estimate. His wife Melissa was also great -- prompt with paperwork and checking in via text and email about my decision, next steps, the work. MJ Home Services recoated my roof and I am very happy w/ the work they performed. Communication was excellent & professional. Responsiveness was great from Devan & the crew. The cost was $7,400 (includes silver roof coating, mold treatment, drywall removal, and disassembly & reassembly of the rooftop deck), which I think was reasonable. Overall I was very pleased. However, less than 18 hours after the work was completed, I received a phone call from John basically trying to strong arm me into paying the final installment and accusing me of "jerking him around". I was driving to work & couldn't pay until lunchtime, which he said was unacceptable. I don't think I've ever felt more insulated by a business, which is very surprising since I was extremely impressed by MJ Services up until that point. I pay my bills and he had no reason to assume I wouldn't have paid on time, so the assumption that I wouldn't just because other people may not have is uncalled for. I'm not sure what John's role is, but I would recommend that he show some professionalism if he wants to keep his customers. A few days later I sent them an email but they never responded to that either. I am very happy with my recent experience with MJ Home Services, especially since a small job turned into a very big one we could not have anticipated. We had some evidence of interior water intrusion, even after having a local roofing company come out twice last year to address it. The initial inspection was scheduled promptly, and the inspector did a thorough job of looking for the source of the problem. He found what he thought was the source of the water intrusion; I received an inspection report and estimate within a day. The work was scheduled, and we anticipated it would take about 2 days to complete, barring any unforseen issues. When the work crew came and opened up an interior wall, the water damage, and accompanying mold issues, were MUCH greater than we had thought. We had sustained major structural damage to our home, which understandably escalated the price and length of the job. We were able to reschedule the crew (to account for a longer time on the job) within a week. Brian and his crew fixed the problem at the source and proceeded to put my house back together. The removal of rotted floor joists, subfloor, drywall, studs, etc. was completed and new materials put back in. The work done on replacing the damaged portions of our hardwood floor was particularly appreciated. During the entire process, I was continuously kept informed by Melissa from the office and Brian from the work site. I received photos and written documentation for our insurance company, and was always apprised of any new issues that arose and what was being done to address them. The crew cleaned up the work site at the end of every day, and was incredibly respectful of our home (and tolerant of our barking dogs). I always felt Brian was supervising and performing the work as if it was his own home. To look at our walls and flooring, you would never know there had been any work done. While I would not wish water damage on anyone, if you do experience it I would recommend MJ Home Services to come and take a look. Our experience with MJ was amazing throughout the entire process. We had termite damage to our house that we needed repaired, and the location was tricky due to the proximity of a gas line. John came to give us an estimate, and he was a super friendly and nice guy. When the estimate came in, it was competitive and similar to other estimates we had received. Hey, Whoa! Some of the reviews here had me on edge. The only reason I contacted this company in the first place was because of the way the owner, Melissa, has responded to some of the negative reviews she has gotten. I see nothing but professionalism and care for her customers in writing and received nothing less than that when communicating with her over the phone. I told her my schedule was flexible but we made an appointment and she even called me to see if I wanted them done earlier because a spot opened up (knowing I had a holiday party to prepare for this weekend). I couldn't take the opening but was impressed they remembered that I was flexible. I was also contacted 1/2 an hour before the crew arrived to make me aware that they were en route. To the juicy stuff! I'm not going to sugar coat it, my carpets are horrendous! I have no clue how to clean or maintain berber carpet on my own. My couch is a whole different monster... I'll just say I have kids and everything gross that could possibly happen on that couch has happened. I didn't even want to sit on it anymore because it was sticky, stained, smelled, and looked filthy! Today I am happy and honestly a bit shocked to say that my couch and carpets have NEVER looked cleaner. My carpets look cleaner than when I moved in 3 years ago! They have amazing specials but this company works with your budget. My technician, John even looked concerned when I over paid him (they did a heck of a job) saying that he didn't want to make my budget too tight around the holidays! Lets talk more about John. He was so qualified. I was enthralled with his passion for helping people and doing what he obviously loves. He explained to me the proper way to clean my carpets so I didn't end up with residual staining or dark spots from cleaners. He even moved my couch, cleaned out all the billions of toys from under it and shampooed this area as well. I've never ever...ever encountered a technician that serviced my home with the professionalism and knowledge that he exhibited. He and his helper laid down towels and floor protectors to protect against damage from hoses and water and his helper walked around wiping up any spots of water that may have dripped from the hose during the cleaning from my hard wood. Call me impressed! I know this is getting long but I did sneakily ask him about his machinery because I read somewhere they used out of date equipment. His equipment was state of the art looking, very compact, and surprisingly not as noisy as I expected. If those reasons aren't enough to get you to choose this company, ponder this. I was told that MJ services donates 40% of their profits to charity. They believe in real life karma. Being selfless and good to others and having it come full circle. I would rather patronize a company that does good than one who does not. I would give them no stars if I could. This has been a horrible experience from the start. I contacted MJ in June for a leak in my roof. Their employee came out and spent less than 5 minutes looking at the roof, and said "it's the pipe collars." While I tried to ask him questions, he actually had his hand on my doorknob trying to walk out. I should have known then that I shouldn't hire these people, but their reviews are good on yelp so I figured I'd give them a shot. They came out and replaced my pipe collar ($525 for a pipe collar...unreal). One would hope that since they only spent 5 minutes diagnosing the issue that this would fix it. It did not. Next time it rained, large amounts of water came through the same spot, and caused greater damage to the drywall and ceiling. I told Melissa that I would like for them to come back since they guarantee their work, and that I would also expect that the drywall would now be covered, since it was damaged too badly to keep at this point. She got an attitude with me immediately, saying she didn't know why they would replace the drywall if it was already damaged-it was damaged beyond repair because they didn't fix what they said they had fixed! They came out again (after telling me that they were coming once before and not showing up, with no communication from the company telling me no one was coming), and applied sealant to some shingles, in addition to cutting a huge hole in my wall/ceiling so they can "see the leak." I can tell you from looking up there, you can't see a darn thing, and now I will be out a few thousand dollars to have a drywall contractor come in and replace the ceiling, wall, and paint it. They have been saying my shingles are not done properly-but never once quoted me to replace them. Interesting, given that they are a roofing company. Had they done this, I would have had them do the work. You will see in her reply that Melissa claims I "only wanted to work within the scope of my budget;" I am more than able to pay for my roof to be repaired if I need to, so this is her trying to cover up having never quoted me for a new roof. After that second appointment, there was a puddle of water on the other side of that same wall after it rained. Additional cost to remove/replace drywall, and paint. At this time, I asked for my money back, so that I could have someone who knew what they were doing come out and look at the roof. Melissa said she would have a check in the mail the same week. 3 weeks later, I still have no check, and have filed disputes with both Paypal (who they make you pay through...now I know why) and my bank to recover the funds. In her reply, Melissa also states that she was "happy to give a refund." Interesting, given that I never received my money back. These people are unbelievably dishonest, do yourself a favor and do what I should have done in the first place-hire someone else. read more

We had a minor flooding incident in our basement caused by heavy rain. I called MJ Home Services the next morning and John came out later that day. Based on his assessment we elected to move forward with carpet and water removal immediately, which started later that night. The two guys who came to do the work, Chris and Raymond, were exceptional! They worked steadily until just after midnight to complete the initial cleanup job, including moving a lot of our stuff around the basement to facilitate their work. The guys came back a few days later to remove any wall material that had been damaged. After inspecting the walls, we decided that no water had reached the drywall and it didn't need to be removed/replaced. This saved a lot of work, allowing me to begin the flooring replacement project much sooner. We opted to have a French drain system installed to mitigate future risk as well. It was a little challenging to schedule this project, but the guys completed that job in under a day as well. They also inspected the walls and foundation, and made a few repairs where needed. Melissa was a joy to work with throughout the process, always quick with an email or text reply to keep us informed about the scheduling progress. The overall cost was below what I expected to pay for such an extensive project and the service was top-notch at every turn. I hope the measures we now have in place will prevent a reoccurrence, but would definitely call MJ again to handle this kind of flooding recovery. Saturday morning, I found water in my basement which quickly escalated into a flood. I called a plumber, had the sewage line snaked but then realized I had a HUGE problem. I had standing sewage water in my basement. A couple restoration companies came by Saturday afternoon and not only were the prices astronomical but I didn't feel confident that they knew what they were talking about. As soon as John walked in to my basement, I knew I was dealing with a professional. He inspected every corner, pointed out cracks that were an entirely different problem (unnoticed by anyone else) and then explained to me the mold, bacteria and overall health issues I was facing. He was the only person who noticed the sewage water by my heating unit and told me my vents were contaminated and needed to be cleaned. I felt like I was treated with respect and honesty by a company who cared about my health. They also wanted to fix the cracks and make sure I didn't need to call them again any time soon. What company wants to fix things so you don't need to call them again?? Certainly not any of the other companies I saw on Saturday!! I bought my home in Baltimore City back in January, and had been noticing some minor issues creeping up. When the ceiling started dripping after a big storm, I turned to Yelp to find a company that would be able to assist with water damage, and I'm glad it pointed me to MJ Home Services. They were extremely quick to respond when I reached out, and had someone come and look at my house within a week. They had a contract drawn up the following week, and were more than willing to be flexible with me as I coordinated other home repairs that needed to be done, changing the contract as necessary. The work they completed was done in one day, and they even weeded my back patio while doing some work back there.
