A shabby chair at Mjr Chesterfield

Good popcorn and snacks. Like the rewards program but its time to replace the lounger chairs.

This is the map of the theater these days. The seats are still there, in the row, but you can't buy more than 2 together.

I heard that movies were reopening a few days ago, and I couldn't wait to go. I didn't even care about what movie I was watching, as long as I got to do it in a movie theater. I don't know why this is one of the things I missed the most during the pandemic. MJR is handling things as safely as they can possibly can. There are gaps between the seats, and you buy tickets in groups of two. But, families can slide over if they want, because they don't do anything to block the intervening seats. I saw a guy in the restrooms with a giant, insecticide style disinfectant tank, making sure everything was safe. The concessions stands are largely the same, but expect the same adjustments you see at restaurants. There are no giant mustard and ketchup dispensers, but instead they have ketchup packets and mustard packets. They add salt and butter to the popcorn, rather than you getting to adjust it yourself. And, the soft drink mixer is closed, but they do have basic beverages. Everything else is as you remembered it in terms of availability. The thing I am happiest with is that the bar is still available, and the guy behind the bar who I saw most of the time was there, and he remembered me and the drinks that my wife and I liked to get. That was pretty awesome. As with the concessions stand, the prices haven't changed. And, the movie going experience, most crucially, has also not changed. I had a chance to forget about the world for a couple hours as I sat in my recliner seat and enjoyed the show. It really didn't matter what I was watching, but rather that I was able to do it in a movie theater. I'm very happy they're back in business.

I usually go to this location or Partridge. I used to go to this one far more because Partridge Theatre is always full, busy, and filled with young teens. Sometimes those teens like to be rude during movies or before the movie. Like throwing popcorn or laughing loudly. Being kids I suppose. This location used to be a more quiet spot. Seems it is hard to find that though on a Saturday. I ordered my tickets online and used my QR code to get in without a wait in line. I love not having to wait in long lines. I also love the fact that you can look at seats available and choose some. The seats are comfortable red recliners. I feel like I am sitting on a cloud. There is so much arm room as well. I have not been to this location in a bit, so we decided to go here when the mall was full seating. We got some popcorn, and I must say that I was dissapointed. The popcorn was way too salty! A few bites and my lips were starting to hurt. My sisters and boyfriend agreed with me. It did not taste good at all. I can not have pop and I am not a fan of their other drink selections, so I had to sit there with this awful taste in my mouth. It makes me think they oversalted it on purpose to make you thirsty. I didn't want to get up during the movie to go drink from a water fountain, or try to find something to buy in line. It didn't completely ruin my experience because the movie was great. The theatre was clean and the staff were nice. They also have a bar section for adults.

This particular theatre has been serving Chesterfield for over 20 years. It's been thru it's share of remodel and expansions. Theatre is always exceptionally clean and staff is really help when it comes to selecting a movie to watch. Why I really love is the free refills on pop AND popcorn, any size. This is the typical hangout every weekend for most middle and high schoolers but this particular location actually has security to keep everyone under control. Props to them! The concession prices have actually gone down over the years...shocking I know! Large Pop and Popcorn deal for $9.50. It was nearing $11 last year. During the summer MJR has free popcorn every Tuesday with the purchase of every movie ticket. Any size. Free refills. Bonus! Sign up for the movie rewards program! Free stuff every 50 points. 10 points each ticket. Maximum of 20 points per day so basically every 3 visits if you bring a guest. Reach 500 points and get two free tickets, two free medium pops, two free popcorns. What's not to love? Cheaper tickets are before noon on the weekend ($5) but between noon-6pm all tickets are just $6..aka not an arm and a leg. They offer student, military and senior discounts. A few of the theatres could use a makeover. New paint on walls, new seats and better speakers but overall this is an awesome movie theatre for the age of it. Very well kept!

    Falling apart seats

Gross! falling apart seats, sticky floors, and dirty bathrooms. Service was good though. Most of the seats don't recline either.

We arrived and I scanned my phone to get my tickets and we waited in line at the concession stand. The guy that called us up was rude and did not want to do his job actuallynone of the kids looked like they wanted to be there nor help anyone! We wasn't asking for alot, we were not rude or anything to him at all. All we asked for when he mumbled what can I get you was a medium water (because I do not like Aquafina) and some sour patch kids they had in a cardboard display behind the counter that was smaller than the ones hanging out by the line where you wait to be called up to cash out. He look at me like I was stupid when I said sour patch kids. So I had to point at the display and say the sour patch kid right there behind you, and he rang up a Aquafina, I said no just a medium drink because I don't like Aquafina we will put water in it. I thought by my husband saying medium he would have understood the assignment but he didn't lol. I had to ask 3 times where the bathroom is to him and he didn't hear me. So my husband with a louder voice said where is the bathroom?. He finally answered ...... we watched Moana @ the 4:45 showing in theater room 10. We walked up the stairs and I went to use the railing and I was so sticky and when I went to put my heat on my seat even set on high wasn't working at seat E6 and I never had Flys bothering me while in a dark movie theater but last night 7/19 was a first .. Needless to say my first and maybe last experience here was not good at all

They consistently appear understaffed, and cleanliness is an ongoing problem. There's frequently popcorn and debris behind the concession counters and around the concession area near the auditoriums. Nothing is necessarily disastrous, but the details are constantly being missed. Customer service is also completely forgettable. The employees aren't necessarily rude, but there's very little energy, urgency or personality. It feels like everyone is simply getting through their shift. There's no real culture or sense that the team is excited to have customers there. To me, that ultimately comes down to leadership. A great theater manager should be visible, set expectations, build culture and create a team that is friendly, fast and efficient while keeping the building looking great. I just don't see that reflected in the operation at this location. The frustrating part is that MJR has an opportunity right now. People still love going to the movies, but theaters are competing with incredibly convenient home entertainment. If theaters want the experience to remain relevant, they have to give customers something they can't get sitting on their couch. That starts with a clean building, great hospitality, efficient concessions and employees who actually add something to the experience. This location has potential, but almost every part of the operation could be tightened up. Better leadership, stronger training and an actual focus on employee culture could completely change the place. Right now, it feels like they're doing just enough to keep the doors open rather than trying to make going to the movies feel special.

The owner still hadn't set a hard date for closing when I visited last week but is saying September so if you read this soon you might be able to hit last call at Ye Olde Cinema. It's strip mall location might not have the romance of a classic stand alone single auditorium theater but there is a thrift store just a stone's throw away and hey, business owners have to work with what they can get. Two theaters give this a little variety and it definitely doesn't feel like a multiplex. The popcorn is much ballyhooed to the point they sell it to go for folks who don't even want to buy a movie ticket and they're discussing doing pop ups with the popcorn machine after this 40 year old institution goes the way of the dodo. I found it better than most but nothing out of this world either. It scores high with the butter but the kernel size is smallish with more crumbs than you'd usually find. I do greatly appreciate Romeo Theatre offers a small popcorn and drink combo at a cheap price. All the corporate multiplexes charge nearly the same price for a small drink and popcorn as they do for a large combo leading me to gouge myself on more unhealthy snacks than I'd otherwise consume and oftentimes throwing so many leftovers in the trash bin. My last trip to Emagine I took my 3/4 full monstrous cardboard popcorn bucket home with me, put tinfoil over it and it lasted several more nights by which point it was far from appetizing. No such nonsense like that here though. Admission was reasonable, too. I'd already seen The Odyssey and I knew the end here was nearing so I opted to see The Brink of War, a misnamed talkfest starring a miscast Jeff Daniels as Ronald Reagan and the always excellent Jared Harris having a second go as a Russian as Gorbachev. I think the filmmakers got Gorbachev a little confused with Khrushchev as Gorbie lost his composure and pounded the table 4 or 5 different times. It wasn't the worst movie though it wasn't the most subtle at giving propaganda at certain points. As other reviewers have noted cup holders attached to the seat in front of you can pose potential problems but even with the eminent closure I had no problem finding a spot with an empty seat in front of me. Everyone in that theater less than a third full looked like they could remember the principal characters in that Iceland summit. I'm glad I made the trek out past 30 Mile though I might be kicking myself if a much more appealing film gets shown before the lights dim here for the last time.
