This is a place I've heard about for a few years. Glad we were able to try it out with friends, who also hadn't visited recently. Overall, this lesser known supper club, looking like someone's home is worthy of a visit. When we pulled in, the parking lot was packed; however, there was hardly anyone in the restaurant. Turns out they have a bar, just past the restaurant, that was hopping (we didn't check it out). Inside the restaurant, we were warmly greeted by our bartender and had a seat at the bar with friends. The establishment isn't huge, it also isn't fancy. It looks a little bit more like a bar with a dining room. That said, I don't go to a restaurant to see how it looks. If you want fancy, this won't match your requirement. Our bartender was friendly and knowledgeable. Our server could also be described with the same terminology. As it wasn't very busy, both were attentive to our needs throughout our visit. After drinks, we ordered and then found our table in the dining room. We then tried out the salad bar. I have to say it was well stocked and fresh. There was one soup available. It was well composed but lacked some flavor. I bring up the soup because the flavor was my general issue with our food. Well prepared but somewhat bland. I had a full rack of ribs. They were generous in size and fell off the bone, but they seemed simply baked. They needed to be smoked and seasoned. Sweet Baby Ray's also is kind of disappointing at a supper club. Three out of four of us had ribs. Our dining partners didn't say anything about the ribs, good or bad. Our other dining partners had Chicken Monterey. It was also generous in size and according to our dining partner was very good. Also, my dining partner and I were underwhelmed by the house loaded potato cakes. Aside from needing to be hotter, they needed a bit more flavor. In the end, the restaurant did a pretty solid job at a reasonable price. Would I still go there versus another "more well known" supper club in the area? Yes, certainly it is worth another visit. read more

Friday night fish fry - to go, so three pieces of cod, their loaded cakes and a small salad....$65. We were shocked! Also ordered extra tarter, didn't receive it and were charged $.50 extra. Also weren't asked what dressing we desired for our salad - received one french and one ranch. The food was good, but not $65 good. read more

We arrived and were informed that the waitress was "running late ".,,what?? Okay, we ordered drinks and sat to wait. When we were finally seated and ordered we found the salad bar to be sub par. Nothing special. Then the food we ordered was also underwhelming. The tenderloin tips were NOT tender. I mean...really?? This was a one and done! We would not recommend. Ordered takeout and when we walked in both bartenders just looked at us. No hellos / greeting. My daughter wanted a Shirley Temple so we ordered one and the woman bartender (dark shorter hair) rudely said you mean a kiddy cocktail. She clearly knows what a Shirley Temple but seemed to have to get a dig in. Our food came out and we received no thank you or goodbyes. Got home and the perch was really fishy tasting. Stopped in with plenty of bar space. Enjoyed a few stiff drinks with the wife. Meals were great for a Friday night. I had the platter which was more than ample especially with salad bar and soup. MJ's is off the beaten path in Hortonville, but when you pull up, they have a large parking lot. They don't take reservations right now, so make sure to get their early. They told us we would have no problem getting in at 5 on a Saturday. We got there at 4:15 (right after open) and still waited a half hour for a table, and by the time we got our food, there was no room in the bar. When you get inside, you check in near the bar, they give you a number and menus. You sit at the bar until your waitress comes to take your order and give you your table number. Not sure if our waitress was late, or got called in for back up, but we were waiting 30 minutes for our order to be taken when we spotted her running into MJ's with her jacket on. Within minutes, our order was taken. We were only #7 on the list, so I'm not sure, BUT they only have 11 tables total. So if you have a large group, you could be waiting hours for a table here. The food was really delicious, my rating doesn't reflect that at all. The salad bar had two options for soup and some of the best selections on a salad bar I have experienced. It had all the fixins, but had potato salad, macaroni salad AND cole slaw. We ordered the combination basket for an appetizer, because when I asked our waitress if it was just a few cheese curds, onion rings and mushrooms, she said "yes." It cake and had EVERYTHING. But only one to two of it, because they had mounds and mounds of fries underneath. Still a great deal for $15. We each got something different off the menu and it really was delicious. The only things that were subpar for food were the garlic mashed potatoes (dry), and the potato cakes were sort of gritty. But we are used to the smooth bite of potato puffs from Pine Tree Supper Club down the road in New London. Now, this is where some stars were lost. The waitress barely came back, and when we sat their first a while with our cards in our checks, I finally had to ask where we pay. Up at the bar, which is impossible to get to at this point. And it is where we checked in. There is a line to pay, a line to check in and a line to order drinks. The waitresses also can only enter the bar area from that small opening, and that's where the only register is. I think I waited almost a half hour right there. There was plenty of space by the waitress computer off of the dining room to put another card reader, so the waitresses can run cards too. And they only offer soda in cans, so they could also have a little mini fridge over there too. Would make their lives so much easier. I worked in a supper clubs for 10 years, and I cannot imagine working like that. It would be so frustrating! They have delicious food, but the hairball of how they run things isn't worth a second trip to me. read more

The entire evening was enjoyable. The menu choices, drinks, appetizers and entrees were all impressive. The food was beautifully prepared, it was delicious and done to perfection. The drinks were excellent. The ambiance couldn't have been better. Our waitress was friendly, efficient, and made us both feel so welcome. Stopped here based on the decent reviews. The place is nice with a large outdoor bar also. I got the walleye with the mashed potatoes cakes. The potato was very good. The fish was served very hot which was nice but it was a little fishy too (overcooked). It was a nice place but I'll try another new place next time. read more

Loved the broiled shrimp and the amazing service. Old fashioneds were good, and the salad bar was well stocked. We were a bit taken aback by the lack of Covid mask use by employees. They were amazing service providers. We all want this to end. Wear masks and spread out the tables a bit more. read more

We had not been here since last year and rumor was that the food was really good. This is true 4 of us went and all had really good steaks and sea food. Unfortunately they have silly rules!! Hostess was great said we could eat at the table in the bar. There were only 3 tables of people in the restaurant. The waitress then said she was "over ruling" the hostess. She literally made us move 1 foot away to the next table. It was ridiculous. Then she over charged us $18 for our drinks that had to be credited back........ so great food, lots of rules, waitress w a power trip! Too bad! If u have a super club in Wisconsin and it's 8pm and no one is in your restaurant, be nice, let customers relax and eat where they want! Then they will come back and feel like it's homey........ now there is no way I will go back! read more

My prime rib was fine but 2 other people in our party had very poor quality dishes one being also poorly prepared(scallops overcooked, dry and cold upon presentation). Horribly long wait and it would piss anyone off to see people that were seated after you receive their food, eat and leave all before your entrees come out. Nearly 3 hour visit when we were told half hour wait. They were just packing people in without honest wait times. If they had been up front about wait time we would have just chose to go elsewhere and they could've avoided me taking the time to make this review. I wouldn't give a bad review to a place that was honest, we would have just picked a different night to come out. Oh and absentee server too. After quite awhile we had to wave another lady down to get our waters refilled and at no point were we asked for refills on our bar drinks that we seated with. Maybe it was an off night but no acknowledgement from bartender as we left and she asked how diner was to which I responded "Long, we really didn't plan to be here 3 hours". Any acknowledgement or apologies from any staff at any point would have went a long way, might have swayed me to consider coming back but at this point I just don't see any reason to give them another chance. ****And to save the guy whom responded to my wife's review accusing her of being one of the people that didn't pay last night. Best place for supper club in this area. We love mjs. The owners are awesome and the food is delicious. Awesome outdoor party area.

We went to Black Otter Supper Club first with another couple in hopes of a having a great ol' fashion, fabulous salad bar and perfect prime rib. For some reason this Sat. Night at 5:15 pm the Otter was standing room only, and even outside. We checked other Hortonville supper clubs close by and decided to give MJ's a try. For a cold January night, MJ's was very warm and welcoming with that up north, woodsy feel. We were greeted by the friendly hostess and found a table in the bar to order drinks. As there were plenty of cars in the lot and other customers so we figured we were on to a good meal, and we were not disappointed. The salad bar was fresh and had my favorite cheeses and herring. We ordered perch(on a Saturday? I know!) and prime rib. Both were excellent and well presented. The perch has an over riding flavor of lemon, however. The house potatoes, a mush mash of potatoes bacon onion and cheese fried was not my favorite, but it could be yours. I rated MJ's a four because the drinks were not to be bragged about. Excellent service and staff was very friendly. I will for sure be suggesting MJ's to all of my friends and family. The old fashion is my favorite drink and I had been craving one for some time now. It was made just as I would expect, delicious! Prime rib was so delicious, it was just as good if not better than the well known local restaurants. The seafood platter had more than enough food, we never have take out containers when we leave, we did this time! The staff was friendly. The soup and salad bar was wonderful. The food was prepared well and delicious. The wait staff was excellent. Overall a great place to go. We usually go to the "Otter" place in Hortonville, however this evening at 4 it was so crowded you couldn't park within a block. So we tried MJ's and we will return there. read more

We were pleasantly surprised with the service, atmosphere and food. They had a salad bar that actually had mixed greens and spinach instead of ice burg lettuce.. with a nice variety of vegetables instead of liver pate. They make a great old fashioned... And dinner was great as well. We will definitely be back. read more

This place is terribly slow. I've been here twice in the last couple of months. Both times I've waited two hours for a table with terrible service at the bar. They will give you the "tag" and not even offer a drink. Old fashioneds when we finally ordered them were wrong. We ordered sour and got sweet. Food is average with instant potatoes as the "sides". Salad bar is decent when they still have soup left (were out both times) but the terrible service doesn't do it justice. I'm not a fan of having to wait until after 9 to eat. read more

Got to sit in a crowded bar for a while. No one seemed to go in for supper. Eventually we were taken into a smallish dining room with 13 tables, only 4 or 5 were in use. The salad bar is lack luster. Chopped mixed lettuce with toppings. Only the ladles on salad dressing are labelled, not the individual pots. I ended up with Blue Cheese which I don't like. Standard fare. I had the "hand cut tips in mushroom cabernet sauce". Translation? Pieces of meat and mushrooms bathed in Straight Salt. The "sauce" seemed to be canned commercial brown gravy which was chock full of salt. I ate about half of it. Took the rest for the dog. He didn't eat it either. By morning it had run straight thru me. My wife had shrimp scampi which was "o.k." The waitress couldn't answer pretty basic questions like "What is the seafood stuffing made out of?" without running to the kitchen to ask. Answer? "Same as stuffing for a turkey." They also advertise choice of potato with all dinners. I wanted the "loaded potato". When my meal came I was told that would be "extra" with the hand cut tips in salt sauce. We'll pass on future visits. read more
