Love lunches there! Nice people and places. Haven't been there yet at night. Hour away but worth the trip.

They were fairly busy for 6pm on a Tuesday but the wait was pleasant. Place is nice and clean and doesn't smell musty or dirty like some supper clubs can. The bar area is spacious to wait either at the bar or in some small lower tables. We came for the salad bar and were a bit underwhelmed. It says Fridays have a limited salad bar and if you asked me what that looked like tonight's is what I'd say. Lettuce, a few standard veggie toppings, your usual dressings, croutons. Missing things like pickles, carrots, corn or peas, three bean salad, cottage cheese. But it was all fresh and crisp and had the most important things for a supper club: cheese and liver spreads with crackers and hot bacon dressing. They also have two soups nightly, lasagna (flavorful and not sweet like some places) and ham and potato (perfectly thickened but not like glue and not too salty). I love that they have perch every night. I was a bit skeptical on all the combos being with tenderloin because I don't like that cut but it was tender yet not mush, perfectly charred and crusty outside but a spot-on medium rare almost to the rare side. Seasoned well and made me a believer in tenderloin. The perch was some of the best I've ever had. Large. Moist fillets and cooked to perfection so it was crispy cracker crumb outside but moist and flaky inside. The broasted chicken was crispy and juicy but a bit salty for my taste. Potato puffs were a fun take on potato sides and well seasoned. Ambiance is what you'd expect, dark wood and "homey" ambiance. Waitresses are fairly attentive and get the job done. It's also absurdly affordable, we paid more for a burger lunch earlier that day and here we even had leftovers. read more

The place is old and tired. Long waits for a table are the norm. They do pour a decent cocktail and the other patrons waiting along with you are a terrific crew. The salad bar was well stocked and our dinner entree's we very good. We'll definitely be back! read more

This supper club is so charming, it might just make you want to start a fan club dedicated to its existence. I rolled in with two friends, ready to feast like royalty. I opted for the broasted chicken, which was so perfectly cooked that I started to wonder if they have a secret chicken whisperer in the kitchen. Each bite was a flavor explosion that made me question why I ever bothered with takeout. My dining companions went all out, with one ordering three generous lobster tails and the other diving into a prime rib that practically demanded its own zip code. The lobster tails were so impressive that if they had a social media account, they'd be influencers in their own right. And the prime rib? Let's just say it looked like it was ready for a photo shoot on the cover of "Meat Monthly." The salad bar was a highlight too, featuring a hot bacon dressing that was so good I almost considered pouring it into a to-go cup. The staff at Dick and Jones were friendlier than a golden retriever at a petting zoo. We arrived at 4 on a Friday and had never been here before. If you are in the same boat, keep reading for some tips. There isn't any signage in well-visible areas of how to get a table. No signage, no hostess stand. We had to bother the bartenders while they were busy making drinks to learn anything. It wasn't until we were sitting the upper bar area and completely parallel to the bar that we noticed a lot sign scrolling with, "start serving at 4:30, tell bar you're ready to order." So at 4:30, we asked for a waitress and she came shortly to take our order, and about 5 minutes later, came to tell us our table. On Fridays, they don't offer a full salad bar or all the potato options, so keep that in mind when planning. But their prices are some of the most reasonable we have seen Our dinners were delicious! We also ordered the combination appetizer basket, which has onion rings, cheese curds and mushrooms. We all seemed to get a combination for our entree, as well as the tenderloin. But we tried broiled scallops, fried haddock and stuffed shrimp. We all ordered the sautéed mushrooms to share between couples as well. You get a soup cup of mushrooms, so it's perfect for two people to have with their steak. All of our meals were delicious. The only reason for the four stars is that when we were asking questions on the process, the women were extremely rude to both us and an older couple who were also curious of the process. Tried to experience The Waters in New London. Arrived at 3 on a Wednesday and the place was packed. Unable to register for a table until 430 in an unorganized scramble. There was no hostess at the front counter and the bartenders are very busy. Went to the back patio to check for a place to wait, it was packed with smokers. Gross.!!! read more

This long standing staple in Appleton is a classic supper club in both look and feel. This no frills restaurant is a local favorite, and rightfully so. The large rectangular bar offers plenty of room to enjoy Brandy Old Fashions and pile up pull tabs, while ample seating options can accommodate both small and larger groups. While the bartender was not overly friendly, she was quick in getting us our orders. The waitress assigned to our party of 17 was very friendly, attentive and also quick with our orders. My husband ordered the stuffed shrimp with fries, and the shrimp was just ok. While the shrimp were of good size, there just wasn't enough flavor in what I suspected was the cream cheese and shredded crab stuffing. I on the other hand had the scallops with tenderloin and twice baked potato. The dish of scallops offered about 10 smaller sized but well flavored scallops in butter sauce, the tenderloin which I ordered medium rare was beautifully pink in the center, and the twice baked potato was a nice size and delicious. Everything was served nice and hot. Our waitress also brought out, fresh from the oven, homemade bread which was amazing! My dinner choice also came with the salad bar, which was relatively small and a bit cramped, but offered a nice variety of options. Wisconsin supper clubs are a classic thing, and worth the stop. Service from the moment our entire party arrived (5pm) was horrible. We had a lady in an electric wheelchair a toddler, baby plus 8 other people. We wanted to be seated as soon as possible...for obvious reasons. We were told no. One person in our got very drunk unexpectedly...asked to close bar tab for him and was told NO because our group wasn't being seated yet. Fortunately, the drunk was cooperative but unable to walk unassisted to table. Waitress brought meals out and all the plates were lukewarm to almost cold. Went on a Friday night and it was crowded so I knew it would be a long wait, but WOW! They take your order while you're in the bar and then bring you to a table when it's ready. Seemed like a good system, but we put our order in around 6:45pm and were lead to our table at around8pm without a word. We sat there for an extended period before deciding on our own to visit the trimmed down salad bar. When we finally got our main course, we were one of only 4 or 5 tables left in the restaurant. Got the stuffed tenderloin which was lacking in much flavor and I never did figure out what it was stuffed with. Wife got the fish, which was lukewarm and a little over cooked. Even with the restaurant somewhat empty, we rarely saw our server and had to wait a bit for our check. There are too many supper clubs in the area to put up with bland food, long wait times and poor service. Not going back. read more

Went to Dick and Joan's for Friday fish fry last night. The employees were hard working and friendly despite being understaffed. The food was very good. So why a 2 Rating. THE WAIT. Our party of five arrived at 6pm. We were seated at 7:15pm and our food came at 7:45. The people next to us , a party of two, arrived at about 6:55 pm and they were already seated when we were seated. This restaurant does not take reservations so our party of 5 waited over an hour to be seated while a party of 2 had a much shorter wait time. Somehow I don't feel valued as a customer. This was the third time we ate here in the past 40 years. Some things just don't change. We won't be back anytime soon. My hat is off to the employees for working at this restaurant- understaffed, apologetic, but still treat customers well. Cooks did a great job too. Owner / manager will not change how things are run and for their loyal customers there doesn't seem to be a reason to. I really don't like leaving negative reviews but the experience here was pretty bad. This review is mainly to give a heads up to Yelpers who are trying to dine safely as we are still dealing with this damn Covid-19 pandemic. We are fully vaccinated but will continue to wear masks until ONE everyone is vaccinated (never gonna happen) or TWO the pandemic is over (eventually gonna happen). That said, we totally get it that businesses desperately need to reopen and we are more than happy to support all businesses as we wiggle ourselves away from this pandemic. However...walking into this supper club we were instantly transported back to 2019. It was *PACKED* and there was ONLY ONE other person wearing a mask. We were given dagger-eyes and smirks from other diners the moment we walked in. Not ALL the diners but enough that it was palpable and extremely uncomfortable. We made our way through the crowd and asked the bartender about how this supper club worked since we'd never been there before. We were handed menus and told that someone would come by and take our order then move us to the dining area. We stood around holding our menus but nobody ever came by. Twice we were told someone was coming to take our order. The bartender and waitress were not rude but we began to feel very unwelcome and purposely ignored. By this time about 15 minutes had ticked by and I was becoming very anxious. When I overheard a waitress tell someone "you make your own salad over there" I was in disbelief. I sauntered over to where she pointed and - sure enough - around the corner was a full on self serve salad bar! Yep, like the ones with a "sneeze guard" that does nothing to prevent peeps from breathing all over the food or keep them from grabbing items with their hands instead of using the pseudo-sanitary community tongs. Yep, like the ones that existed pre-covid but disappeared after the world went into quarantine. Yep, the self serve salad bar is back. Well, at least HERE it is. That was too much for me. On the way out I handed the menus back to the bartender and kindly said "thank you" and hightailed it out of there. I seriously think I was holding my breath the whole time and it was a good thing we left when we did or I would've passed out. We have been there a good 6 times over the last couple of years. And we have never had a bad meal! Waitress Sandy was excellent! Bar tenders were very knowledgeable. And the people arond us last night ( December 30th 2023 ) were a lot of fun. I'm not sure who were the regulars and who wasn't. They had snowflake lights arond the bar which made it very nice. I'm not originally from WI, but I've noticed that locals seem to love their supper clubs for the large quantities of food at a reasonable price. Coming from CA, I prefer quality over quantity and fresh ingredients. I wasn't expecting Michelin Star quality, just a good Traditional American dinner. Ambiance (1/5) - You enter the restaurant from the rear entrance and have to pass by the crowded bar area to find the restaurant seating in the back. There's no sign or anyone to greet customers at the front, so we found this a little confusing during our first visit. The restaurant is dimly lit, old fashion, and has a slight musty smell. Service (2/5) - Once making our way past the bar, there was no Hostess or anyone to greet us. We found a waitress and were promptly seated since we arrived at 5:30p and most guests were still in the bar enjoying a cocktail. Our waitress brought our menus and took drink orders, but seemed rushed and didn't take the time to ask if we had any questions or make suggestions. Overall, the waitstaff seem overwhelmed and stressed. Food (2/5) - Between the three of us, we ordered the Grilled Haddock, Shrimp Scampi, and Petite Tenderloin - a good sampling of the seafood and meat options. None of these dishes stood out as tasty, quality dishes that I would return for. The menu prices are written in on the menus in the restaurant and are about $2 more per entreé than what is currently reflected on the restaurant's website. All of the entrées listed below come with your choice of potato and a salad bar. We tried the Twice-Baked Potato, which I found to be lacking in flavor and missing cheese on top - the best part of a twice baked potato! The Salad Bar is quite limited as the toppings include iceberg lettuce, cucumbers, cauliflower, and olives. The other end of the Salad Bar includes baby carrots and toast with three types of pub-style cheese, but that's not really my thing. I will say that the Soup options looked quite good and that the Pepper Soup (peppers, rice, tomatoes, and ground beef) was quite tasty! The Broiled Haddock ($13.50) was a generous piece of fish, but seemed a little overcooked (dry) and tasted a little fishy in my opinion. The Shrimp Scampi ($16.50) came with 6 generous size shrimp, but they were not as sweet as previously frozen shrimp that I have cooked at home and I did not care for the garlic butter sauce. Also, all of the seafood dishes come overly dusted in paprika. The Petite Tenderloin ($15.50) is a small size for the price, and I have had better tasting steaks at other steakhouses in the area. Overall, I was disappointed and will not return. If you like All-You-Can-Eat type restaurants this may be your place, but if you're more of a foodie like me, skip this place! read more

The food was great! Had steak and shrimp. Cooked perfectly! However, the service at the bar takes a long time, and one of the bartenders is very unfriendly. Never cracked a smile, not even once while waiting on me or said thank you. We wanted after dinner drinks, and this bartender didn't seem too pleased. she kind of threw the drink menu at me and walked away. Finally another more friendly bar tender came and took my order and made the drinks. Just made for an uncomfortable experience. It's been a few years since I've been in as I live out of state. And a few things have changed because of covid. But it just wasn't the same. First, we have to check in with the bartenders and then they have to somehow let a server know. We were lucky and had a server talk to us as well. We were given menus in the bar area and told they would come back to take our order and then would seat us afterwards. In the meantime, we're in the way of people in the bar and in front of the specials board. I would think this would be counterproductive with covid as we're standing around a bunch of people in close quarters. Our server took our food order and told us what number table to sit at. There was water on the table, but we had to wait awhile and ask for her to take a drink order. No refills offered on sodas or another round of drinks. Steak just wasn't the quality I remember. One person asked for a steak medium and it came back rare (raw in the middle). Never said anything because it took awhile to see the server...will just cook more at home for leftovers. The bartenders are friendly and quick to get you a drink. The are always made the way we like them, they don't skimp. The food is always spectacular and the service is top shelf. We love the prime rib and seafood. The seafood platter is awesome. They have a great salad bar. One of my favorites on the salad bar is the pâté. Who ever makes that should get an award. Saw a sign that indicated to register at the bar. Went back to the bar and waited a while, trying to figure out what kind of system they were running here. Another great meal at dick and Joan's. Whenever in Appleton we make a point of eating at Dick and Joan's. The staff is great, friendly and really work hard to make sure you enjoy your meal. The food is simply great. Let's start with the SUPPER CLUB staple of the salad bar. It's got all the goodies, cheese and crackers and HOT BACON DRESSING. Absolutely greats broiled steaks are always perfectly done. You ask for medium rare and that's exactly what you get. Great cooks. One more note, the on-site baked table bread is simply fabulous. This was our first time at this restaurant and it was not a pleasant experience. The bar opened at 3:30 and dinner began at 4:30. We were only interested in dinner, with maybe one drink. When we walked in, there was no hostess and the bar was pretty crowded with only one bartender, who didn't acknowledge anyone coming in with a greeting. We walked past the bar to find the dining room with waitresses standing around so we asked for a table. One of them said we had to register at the bar and she showed us a sign in the dining room that stated to resister at the bar. Why was this sign not placed in the entry way for people walking up to see the registration rules. We were not the only ones that walked into the dining room to get a table only to be told to register back at the bar!Well, we walked back to the bar and waited at least 10 minutes before we finally waved for the bartender. She was a very grumpy woman who didn't smile at us and said we had to look over the menu, decide what we wanted, then a waitress would be assigned to us. She never even asked for a drink order! We waited 10 more minutes for a waitress to be assigned to us and she took our order and told us to go to table 27. Once seated, we went to the salad/soup bar and our meal came out before we finished our salad course. Food was ok, but I've had better at other Wisconsin supper clubs. When we got our check, we had to go back to the bar and pay there. Fortunately, another bartender who was very friendly was helping out the grumpy woman. So, this is my first time at this restaurant and probably wouldn't go back. To start with, the salad bar was ok but not as good as the Black Otter. The seafood plate was ok, however, the containers that they served the sauces in were paper and basically soggy when the food was served. The worst part of this entire night, as soon as we went to sit down, we walked past the bathrooms and all you could smell was urine. They need a hostess area. You have to tell the bartenders who are busy and forget about you. The old fanshioneds were good but the sad thing about supper clubs is that the food is always bland and boring. I'm sure the older crowd loves that but places need to step it up for the 40 and under crowd if they want to keep business. The waitstaff was good and it is a nice facility. I debated about writing a review because I know restaurants are struggling after all the virus nonsense. However, I'm hoping this will spur them into action to change what is happening there. I have gone to D&J's frequently in the past as I have relatives in the Appleton area. However, after last night's experience, I don't think we'll be back. We came early and were the only diners. Lots at the bar, however. Even so, we had to go to the bar to order. The bartender was not a bit friendly. She finally took our order and a waitress came and got us. The dining room was dark, badly in need of updating, and smelled like manure. The salad bar was pathetic, only lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers on it. In order to use the salad bar, you were required to both sanitize your hands AND put on latex gloves. The food arrived quickly and was okay. However, as I got up to go to the ladies room, the waitress grabbed my plates and then started pulling out my partner's plate, even though he was clearly in midst of still eating, the fork somewhere between the plate and his mouth. It was like she wanted us out of there quickly, although there were only 4 others in the entire dining area. We won't be back, and I'm sad about this, but there are many other places to eat way better than this. When the ambiance is this unpleasant, the food better knock your socks off. The only stand out thing was the bacon dressing on the salad bar. It sounds weird but it's actually pretty good.
