Welcome to 1977. The wood paneling, the oil lamp, the ambiance you would expect from a steakhouse that never let the 1970's out of their sight. Phenomenal steaks, loaded bake potatoes & homemade garlic ranch. Service with a smile and just the perfect amount of Northern Wisconsin charm. Definitely a great experience!!

Went here on a whim for a birthday dinner and boy were we happy we did! Excellent ambience, service, and food! We order the chicken and the cheeseburger soups which were hot and delicious! Next we had our salad and this is one of the few places still in the valley to serve hot bacon dressing too! After being told so much about it i was glad to finally try it! We had cheese curds appetizers with home made ranch which was also amazing! Our server recommended after-all the owner has been snacking on em for decades (something we saw with our own eyes here too ) Our steaks were cooked perfectly too! We will definitely be back! Oh and can't forget the cherry desert!

Stopped in because we were recommended to try it out for a good steak. We wanted an early dinner so we came right when they started seating dinner and we had a table instantly. This is an old building with a cool bar and you can tell this place is a blast from the past. It truly looks like it hasn't been updated in 40 years, but that's the vibe they are going for with this traditional "supper club". Our service was very quick and organized. She asked for our drink order but we never received a drink menu so she went and got one. That's when we noticed they had appetizers on the drink menu, which we also would have never seen. So we ordered some beers and cheese curds. The curds were delicious and she brought us their house made garlic sauce. For my meal, I got the porterhouse which included bread, a salad, soup, and a potato of my choice. The amount of food was incredible. The tomato bisque soup was hot and tasty. I wish my baked potato had more than just sour cream but that's all she offered. Overall, an interesting old building with pretty good food. The portions were massive for a reasonable price for a steakhouse.

Solid steakhouse in the middle of downtown. Friends and family gather in this dark-paneled den for fine-dining. My steak was cooked perfectly, with just the right amount of sear, and it tasted great. Good cuts of beef, with a garden salad, and recognizable side-dishes ciled me up. I was too full for dessert.

I heard this place gave the cheddar cheese and was a nice little steak house. We called and made a reservation. We were seated on time and it was a nice little place. The service was good but a little slower. Our dinner was 2.5 hours long. The soup was very good and flavorful. The salad was poor with a lot of pieces that were bad. The onion rings on the steak were thin and good. The steak was okay. Not the best but not terrible. I would eat it again but I wouldn't rush back for it. Overall it was a decent experience.

We arrived around 4:30 pm on a Wednesday and were seated immediately for the two of us, which was lovely. I started with a filthy martini (one part vodka, one part olive juice)... and they nailed it. Exactly what I asked for. My mom ordered a whiskey old fashioned press, which she enjoyed. For appetizers, we ordered the French onion soup, deep-fried mozzarella, and bacon-wrapped scallops. My mom also had the soup of the day, which was a turkey pot pie soup. Everything was very good overall. One small note on the scallops, and this is important for context: I personally have a strong aversion to seafood, and my mom is usually careful not to order seafood around me because even the smell can make me nauseous. However, scallops are usually an exception, as they don't tend to have a strong seafood odor. In this case, there was no unpleasant smell at all, which I appreciated. That said, the scallops themselves appeared under-seared and very pale, and the bacon was undercooked. Not raw, just soft and not crispy. My mom agreed it could have used a few more minutes. A minor miss, but worth mentioning. For my entrée, I ordered the French dip, which came with carrots... and honestly, the carrots deserve their own moment. They were tiny, perfectly cooked, beautifully seasoned, buttery, and balanced with just the right amount of sweet and salty. I love carrots, and these were exceptional. Highly recommend. My mom ordered a Wednesday special trio, which included barbecue ribs, pineapple glazed ham, and a turkey dinner with stuffing, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce. I'll note that the ham itself was delicious, but the pineapple glaze wasn't quite for me personally, as it leaned a bit too tangy for my taste. That said, the turkey was phenomenal. I had a bite, and it was moist, flavorful, and absolutely something I'll come back for. The mashed potatoes and gravy were excellent. I love stuffing, but this one wasn't my favorite; it tasted slightly sour or underdone to me, though that could simply be a preference thing. I'd still order the turkey dinner again without hesitation. Because it was my birthday, our server Jenny surprised me with a slice of chocolate cake, which was incredibly sweet and thoughtful. I was very full... but yes, I ate the cake, and it was delicious. We also split a Pink Squirrel for dessert, which was rich, nostalgic, and the perfect way to end the meal. Service was excellent throughout the evening. Jenny was warm, attentive, and paced everything perfectly. Food came out efficiently without overwhelming the table. The hostess was also welcoming and kind. The dining room was clean, comfortable, and nicely decorated. The lighting was just right, not too dark. We also arrived at a great time, because shortly after our entrées came out, the restaurant quickly filled up. One small suggestion: the website mentions half-price apps and drink discounts, but it isn't clear that those specials are bar-area only. Not a huge issue for us, but clearer wording online would help manage expectations, especially for guests who can't sit at high bar seating. Overall, this was a really special dinner, especially after years of hearing about the Red Ox and never going. More positives than negatives by far. Final rating: 8.5 / 10 We'll absolutely be back... especially for the turkey dinner and those carrots.

The food today was just okay. I had the fish, and it was good. The birthday boy had a steak and he said he enjoyed it. Two others had sandwiches, and they appeared to be satisfied. Two at my table ordered Chicken Cacciatore and they both said it was too salty--really salty--as in, they didn't eat it. I did mention it to our server who was very gracious and said she'd pass it on to the chef. Again, generally good, but they just didn't hit it out of the ballpark today.

Arrived 27 minutes early, figuring we could sit at the bar and have a drink. Wrong. Their website says "Unwind with friends and family in the inviting Brunswick-style bar and lounge..." but the bar only has about 10 seats. All were occupied with people eating dinner at the bar. We were directed to go sit in the hotel hall outside to wait. That was one of the high points. The whole experience was just blah. Service was slow. The place was not busy - about 50 percent occupied I would guess. My wife's dirty martini arrived without an olive. There is a huge list of pricey wines by the bottle, but only maybe 5 reds by the glass. And after a wait, I was told the one I ordered was out. The French onion soup we ordered was pretty good. Steak was good, a small filet mignon. But - it was just plopped on a plate by itself. A grey piece of meat in the middle of a white plate by itself. For $47. No garnish, no effort to make it attractive. Sides were wrong, ordered twice-baked potato, almost got a regular baked potato. Overall, food was OK, just low effort at presentation and slow in coming. There's no dessert menu. Would have been nice to have a cup of coffee and a piece of cheesecake. It's not like they were looking to turn the table, took us two hours start to finish. Though I noted on the reservation it was our anniversary, that didn't get carried through. We don't need to be treated like royalty, but why ask if it's a special occasion if you're not going to acknowledge it? The check was wrong. I was charged for the glass of wine I didn't get. Had to wait again while that got fixed. The restrooms aren't in the restaurant - you have to leave and hike down the hotel hall to find one. It's just not the 4-star experience you would think from the billing and the big prices on the menu. Look elsewhere if you are looking for that fine dining experience.

We chose a spot facing the entrance which was fun because we could watch the bar tender and see what types of drinks other patrons were ordering! I saw alot of old fashioneds being ordered. Of course, I followed the trend and did the same. I ordered mine sour it was great! Watching him make mine and by the taste, I could tell they make their own sour mix. It added a uniquely sour, yet flavorful touch. My friend ordered a dirty martini that was also perfectly made! Not to mention, they have homemade seasoned pretzels at the bar. Seasoned pretzels and an old fashioned was a great way to start this experience. We ordered our meals at the bar and then were given a number that correlated to the table we were to sit at. I had no idea this was how supper clubs worked but I liked the idea of sitting down on our own time. We were having so much fun at the bar that we didnt make our way to the table until our second drink. When we got to our table our salads were already waiting for us! I got the house salad with blue cheese. Although a simple salad it was delicious! The blue cheese dressing was super good- if thats your thing I would definitely recommend ordering. I also got the french onion soup which was amazing. Perfect ratio of soup to bread to cheese. They also serve bread when you sit down. I tried to avoid eating too much bread but found myself eating two slices. I got the perch as my entree. It was a large portion of fish, battered and fried served with tartar sauce. My friend ordered the steak and that was cooked to perfection too! I was told that when here you have to get a grasshopper drink on the way out. So I followed their recommendation and did. It was so good and I don't even like mint that much! It was served in a small martini glass. Overall I would 100% go back to and recommend the prime steer.

We didn't initially plan to go to the Prime Steer; but the restaurant we called claimed to have a long wait. I'm glad they were full because it gave us a chance to check out a restaurant that we've long talked about going to. This is what you want your Wisconsin supper club to be; good drinks, good food and great service. While the building and dining room won't make the cover of Architectural Digest, the drinks, food and service will bring you back. I was immediately impressed by the friendliness and efficiency from the bartender. She poured good drinks and the prices were reasonable. No, the old fashioned wasn't muddled, but it was a good drink. Our waitress rocked it. She proclaimed to be a newbie and apologized for being slow. We didn't mind the pace of the evening and liked learning more about the restaurant from the waitress. Myself and a dining partner both had the T-bone steak. We agreed they were perfectly cooked and well seasoned; however, they were a little bit tough. Not enough to complain. Another dining partner had his usual French fries and cheeseburger. He said they were both delicious. Our other dining partner had a combo of broasted chicken with a tenderloin. They said it tasted great and the steak was flavorful and properly prepared. A salad and cup of soup preceded the main meal. I enjoyed a cup of seafood chowder. Two others had the French onion. They said it was just good, not great. A basket of bread also came with our meal. Overall, we enjoyed our first trip to the restaurant. Quality service and reasonable prices go a long ways in our book. While there was some room for improvement, we will definitely give it another try in the future.
