Before actually coming to the salon, I did a ton of research; It's not everyday you find a curl specialist near Syracuse! It's about a 20 minute drive from Syracuse University so this appointment was very special, since I do not have a car at school. Also, I had to budget this into my modest allowance. Kelly, the receptionist, helped me find a last minute appointment that I unfortunately had to cancel. She and I rescheduled for the following week for a DevaCut and Pintura Highlights. This was my first positive experience with MLO Salon. I called back three times and she was just as patient and sweet as each time before. The full service salon is cute, hip, and CLEAN! I walked in to a coffee and tea bar, with light refreshments. Every stylist (and even the customers) were so nice. About ten minutes after my scheduled appointment time, Maria called me over and we started chatting about my hair ideas. Maria is so attentive and while quieter than most stylists, so kind and humble. Let it be known that I've got crazy curls that are not the easiest to work with. I've had at least ten stylists turn me down and ask that I never come back! But Maria was confident and qualified so I told her what I wanted and we got cookin'. When she cut my hair, at first, I thought it was cute. After struggling (for literally six hours) to dye my hair the color I wanted, we settled on just covering up the myriad of colors that my hair DID actually take, with black. My hair fought Maria with everything it had. After we washed it again and styled it, I was so beat that I thanked her and left. She did everything she could to get my hair to the color I envisioned, however, it just wasn't working out. Maria did literally everything she could to help me get to the right color but it just wasn't sticking. Alas, it wasn't until I walked outside that I noticed the back was so chopped up and gnarly. Once again, my curls are VERY difficult to work with so I do not blame Maria at all. I started crying and felt horribly so I called my mother (big baby, I know). I didn't want to say anything to Maria because she has worked so hard and long to help me achieve the color I wanted. The last thing I wanted to do was tell her I was dissatisfied with the haircut as well. My mom called Maria and she offered to refund me for the haircut and color. Maria felt terrible. While I may not go back for DevaCut, if I ever wanted to do the Brazilian Blowout again, I would go back in a heartbeat. Maria displayed exemplary customer service, not only by refunding me, but also by doing EVERYTHING in her power to fix it. Also, Maria had three customers in between "The Great Dye Debacle of 2016 (AKA my defiant hair protesting color)" and did an amazing job with their cuts and color. She's a rockstar. I kept complimenting the ladies as they left because everyone looked so darn good! In summary, MLO may not be the salon for my dense thicket of multicultural locks I have learned to love, but I would still recommend her for folks with a little less texture. Please, do not get me wrong: Maria is a DevaCurl Specialist among other talents! But sadly my curls weren't a perfect match to her scissors. Ratings: I sit between a 3-star and 4-star rating because it is exactly what I would want in a salon aesthetically, staff-wise, and comfort-wise but I was unhappy with my haircut. Best experience ever! Barbie took her time, was educational, thorough, friendly and welcoming. My hair looks incredible. I did all over dye, wash, cut, and style. Maria and Barbie at MLO are easy to work with, responsive, and overall friendly and amazing! Planning a 'destination' wedding from across the country was challenging, to say the least, however Maria always responded to my emails within 24 hours of my sending them. I would highly recommend a 'trail run'; it gave me a great opportunity to discuss various looks with my makeup artist Barbie and ask questions which helped elevate stress on the big day. I was a little worried about someone doing my makeup I had never met but Barbie couldnt have been better. We had a minor mis-communication; I guess I never clarified what time I expected Barbie to arrive and we were outside of cell coverage... But she remembered my general timeline and showed up 30 minutes before I was expecting her ready to rock and roll. How awesome is that?! I had the option of strip or single applied lashes for the same price.... awesome! And some things I had mentioned during the trial (ie I usually use gel liner) she showed up with spontaneously! When Barbie was finished with my bridesmaids she even worked in my mom which I had not asked for ahead of time. I REALLY REALLY REALLY could not have asked for more, and for the price it was totally worth it. FYI, they charged mileage but no travel fee. read more

Maria is the best! I contacted her about getting my new human hair wig cut and styled. And she did a great job. She listened to what I said and cut it exactly as I asked. The experience was lovely. She is kind and soft spoken, and made me feel really pampered. She discussed with me how to maintain the style on my own and recommended products to keep the hair healthy looking. No pressure, just suggestions. I highly recommend this salon. read more

Front desk staff was nice and friendly. The stylist was not nice and treated us poorly. She did not welcome us and barely looked at me. I tried talking to her but she ignored me. I will not return or recommend this place to anyone! read more

I've been to the place a few times. The salon is clean and the people are always nice to work with. The prices are on the average to high side, with not too many discounts available. My last visit was for an eyebrow tint service, and the tint didn't last as long as I was told, it only lasted for 2 days for me. I was very disappointed and that was a complete waste of money. read more

This full service salon has something others don't -- owner Maria Orbinati, IMHO the best makeup artist and stylist in Central New York. For years TV production companies and modeling agencies have hired Maria to do makeup for shoots, and for good reason. She can make any woman look good (think "Extreme Makeover, CNY Edition" without the plastic surgery.) She's done makeup for visiting celebrities and local female politicians; and she's not only talented but affordable. I've had her do my makeup for TV appearances and my daughters' prom makeup and we've always been transformed by the results. She's also an excellent hairstylist and I've followed her to several different salons. Now that she has her own shop, she's able to do it all in an environment that is relaxing and intimate, with a hip upscale urban feel. You won't go wrong going to MLO for your next haircut, mani or pedi, waxing or eyelash services. I can't say enough good things about MLO and Maria. read more
