We weren't sure we were in the right place when directions took us into the parking lot of a liquor store. Mo P's is near the back of the building. We were the only people who ate in the dining room while we were there, but they do a conservation amount of carry out orders. The collard greens, potato salad, and baked beans are all outstanding. The chicken strips may be frozen, but their fried chicken is stellar, and the perfectly seasoned skin stays crunchy. I have a lot of leftovers for lunch tomorrow from a two piece dinner. It was a little too empty when we came in and we got concerned. That soon changed as the smile behind the counter started shining! We ordered a few items and then waited for our goodies to get prepared. Folks streamed in after waiting for a few minutes, and after noticing not only the homemade cakes, but I asked about the barbecue sauce and was told it was homemade as well. Came 45 minutes to check this place out because I liked the way the chicken looked in the photos and they had nice reviews. I got 45 bucks worth of food. Whiting and chicken was pretty, but way to salty. The greens were really good cooked to perfection. The mac and cheese was bland, but had a really strong garlic taste. Never seen anyone put garlic in the Mac and cheese... I was really disappointed in the mac and cheese need more cheese. My wife said the yams were just ok need more sugar. Best chicken and fish in Ann Arbor and Ypsi, no one compares. Everything is always steaming hot and fresh as can be... a lot of these chicken and fish places the fish stinks like rotten seafood. This place is so good! Everything is fresh and made to order. I've had the catfish and the chicken (breast and thighs) and both are great. The chicken is so Juicy and has a ton of flavor. Yum, yum, yum! I haven't had fried chicken in many, many years because it's never been good enough to waste the calories. Not any more! Oh, my! How tasty! Mouthwatering spices. The skin was heavenly! I never eat the skin because it's usually so greasy and chewy. Not here! It's crisp and just so delicious. The meat is juicy and flavorful. Best fried chicken I've had in Ypsi/Ann Arbor area. And it's not really close. Fried perfectly with the chicken still being tender. The yams are definitely worth trying out if you like em a little on the sweeter side. Perfect for me, but tastebuds/how you grew up eating them differ. The greens are solid, but I like to add a little hot sauce for added heat and flavor. The red beans and rice are also a good side to try out. A little more mashed than I was used to, but they didn't let me down. Lastly, give the cornbread a shot. Okay, so we went yesterday and my husband was completely turned off from soul food after another spot in Ypsilanti let us down (hint: starts with a C). After reading the reviews we had to check it out. The place is a bit of a hole in the wall joint; I would not eat there as it smells like they cook there (not dirty but oily and I'm sensitive to smells). However I can't fault the authentic feel of a kitchen well used. That aside; the FOOD Is AMAZING and the cook/owner/cashier is friendly, helpful, and smart. We instantly felt at ease with the decision to try the food. We ate greens, red beans, and rice, Mac n cheese, chili cheese fries, chicken, catfish, and cornbread. All was amazing. The greens were my favorite and my husbands was the mac n cheese. Prices were super reasonable and everything was made for us right then. This really redefines restaurant food that stays under heaters or in the freezer. I was having flashbacks of Sunday dinners. It did take a while to cook so order ahead but truly it was worth the wait. :-) Will go back and rave about this spot to everyone I know. read more

WOW! Absolute best soul food around by miles, am so mad I didn't try them before. Had whiting dinner with yams and greens, thighs and wings of chicken and a piece of the lemon pound cake. It was just the best - Fish was well seasoned but not over breaded, the chicken was beyond reproach moist and juicy, crispy, not greasy at all. The one star is not a reflection on the food, but rather due to a strange non-experience. I wanted to give this place a try, since it's basically in my backyard, and I love well-executed southern food. I went out to grab a couple snacks from the neighboring party store (Buster's), and out front there was a chalkboard sign for MoP's. I was triggered. Everything sounded delicious and I was planning to order some fried chicken, a chili dog, mac and cheese, and okra. In my mind, this was about to be an epic lunch. So I walked in. Ghost town.... There were no patrons in the restaurant and not an employee in sight (even though the door dinged as I walked in). I figured my timing was bad, so I stood around for a few minutes. Then, I saw a sign at the counter that said "cash only." I don't carry cash. Who carries cash in 2015? But hey, I can roll with the punches. Buster's has an ATM. so I went and grabbed $40 bucks and returned to MoP's. Still utter silence (except for the door ding). I waited about five minutes before I grabbed a takeout menu and walked out. At least the takeout menu still smells of dirty fryer oil. I can sniff it and pretend I'm eating some greasy goodness. read more

Went in for lunch the other day and had a fabulous time. Mo P's is a local soul food shop with a real community feel. As a vegetarian I had some collard greens (I let the meat stock slide) with a slice of cornbread and a nice creamy home style mac & cheese on the side. All of which were delicious and really enjoyed my lunch in the laid back restaurant space. People were flowing in and out for lunch, most getting the special(s) or asking about the red hots. My friend had been in a bit before and reported that his experience was excellent, the perfect amount of butter and brown sugar on the yams and the greens weren't loaded with bacon or bacon grease. I kept eyeing the pound cake for dessert... and know that next time I'll be getting some as well as trying out the yams and okra. read more

I stuck with my nose and got the two piece chicken lunch special, but I got it with white meat instead of the dark. Let me tell you, it was a good decision. I got a breast, a wing, and some french fries. The wing was pretty good but the breast was absolutely phenomeal. The seasonings went perfectly the the greasy, fried to perfection chicken meat. The breast was also huge and very much worth the measly $5.99 I paid for the meal. My only complaint is the fries seemed to be light on salt, but otherwise they were solid.
