Where do I begin!? Tex's Riverways just provided me with the ultimate adventure out on Moab. When I…read morewas invited to come out this way for a friends wedding, I began thinking of what adventures I can could fit into the trip. I pondered on base jumping, off roading, flying... but then I read about canoe camping through Tex's Riverways and the choice was obvious!! From the first phone call to their office and speaking with Claire, I knew I made the right decision. They provided me with the choice of a 15' or 17' foot Grumman canoe or a kayak, and I went with my personal fave, the 15' footer. They also provided me with shuttle to the launch site, paddles, emergency flotation, advice on possible camping areas and hikes, and an emergency number for the parks rescue team. I purchased a map and rented a portable camping toilet. Aside from the above, you're pretty much on your own, which I loved lol. Yes, I decided to go canoe camping solo for 3 days and 2 nights. And indeed, it was a true test of my mental and physically abilities in every way. I feel grateful for the experience and was in complete awe of Mother Nature the entire time. Through the intense winds of the first day, paddling against the current to backtrack to the only feasible campsite for miles, starting my own fires with sunburnt fingers and 15+ miles of paddling in total, I truly felt alive. And the only times I used my cell phone were to take photos or to sent satellite texts to my loved ones to give them periodic updates. Ahh what a feeling to be disconnected from everything and to be present in the moment. I highly recommend this to everyone, though with caution and knowing your own limits and abilities. On second though, I highly recommend you go with a group and a guide, unless confident in your paddling and navigation skills!

He is full of information and a great storyteller. Our group ranged from 8 years old to people in their 80s with different astronomy backgrounds and Alex was able to keep it engaging and entertaining for everyone. My 8 year old is now planning his science fair project from something that he learned from Alex! It's important to be flexible as weather doesn't always cooperate. We thought we had the perfect plan since it was new moon but it turned out to be cloudy and windy on most of the nights we were in Moab. Alex tried his best to reschedule us for the better forecasted days and he chose a spot that was shielded from the winds. There were still some clouds on the night we went but he shuffled his plans aroundto show us things that were not covered. We saw star clusters, nebulas, and planets on his telescope but the highlight was seeing Jupiter and its moons high resolution. He was patient and gave everyone time to adjust their eyes on the telescope to made sure everyone saw each object. He encouraged questions and comments so it was engaging. I would definitely do this again next time if I had even more time in Southern Utah.

It helped also that we were out in the desert and could walk away from the group when things got overwhelming. Our guide did a wonderful job of incorporating her and accommodating her. Our guide had an extensive knowledge of the night sky: stars, astronomy and astrophysics. He has a true love for what he does and that showed in his presentation. Everyone got as much time as they wanted looking through the telescope. It was set up with an auto tracker and he provided a stool that allowed everyone to look through it comfortably. For my daughter, the highlight was also the finale - a certain large planet that she loves. Highly recommended.

You can either meet at their location, where you can get some merch, sunscreen, use the facilities and ask any questions you have, or you can pay a small fee to get picked up from your location. From their place to the river, we did one of their raft tours, with 2 other couples we met there, and Josh, our guide. From beginning to end, Josh had a lot of information and history to share with us, and he made everything interesting and fun. He enjoyed answering questions, sharing his knowledge with us, and taking all the pictures we wanted. We even stopped for a quick hike on our tour (and those that didn't want to join were welcomed to stay on the raft). This was an amazing way to see a lot in a "short time" and learn.

I was searching on line and found Navtec. The river ride on the Colorado sounded like a great way to see the park. And it sure was, we nailed it. We arrived at their location downtown Moab a little while after checking into a hotel downtown. They offered to pick us up but it was a nice 10 minute walk to get to their office. It's a nice spot with plenty of last minute necessary's like sunscreen. Within minutes of rallying our group of 6 we were off to the launch point for the tour with our motorized blowup boat. We had a stop along the way at the great wall to see hieroglyphics. The boat ride was great, with information on spots and stories as well. Our guide Josh was excellent. Happy to say we had a great time.
