Took my dog here recently so that he could run around, stretch his legs, and also to show him that we still love and appreciate him! ( He's been very needy and jealous lately since my son was born a few months ago). After being here once, I want to make it a regular thing. It was so awesome to see our dog being able to socialize with other dogs and have so much fun. Thre park is fairly big, very well taken care of, and even has a doggy water fountain for our fur babies. The one annoying thing is the flies! But what really can be done about that? I know there is a fern that will keep flies away. Maybe if there was some we could plant around the doggy park, it might help? Especially around the benches where the humans sit to wait... All in all, a really great place for our fur babies, and I look forward to returning again and again. read more

Suggestions: If you are not familiar with this dog park, especially for new time dog visitors, please read the park rules before entering. Here are a few most important tip you need to know. Do not congregate by the entrance gate, so that those dogs that are coming or leaving are free to enter or leave. There are free brochures with the park rules on the bulletin board near the park entrance, feel free to grab one. Please watch and pick up your dogs poop and tie the bag. This is an off leash dog park, leashes must cone off. No food or treats allowed. If your dog digs a hole (rule #18), the owner must fill the hole back up. - my dog broke this rule. There were issues with flies that may seem to be under control with fly traps. There is mulch in this park, a few picnic tables, a hillside and a nice big tree that brings shade to the park. If you are lucky (like I was), the volunteer coordinator is usually at the park maintaining and also monitoring the comings and goings of dogs. Closest dog park to my home listed on Yelp. You take the Tripler cut off on Moanalua freeway, turn left and take the first left after the stoplight (small road). There is plenty of parking shared with the basketball courts. Bring your own poop bags. There is a double gate to get in and then your dog is home free. There is a water fountain you can fill your dogs bowls with. I wouldn't recommend your dog using the bowl connected to the fountain. There are plenty of rubbish cans for poop and picnic tables to sit on. The one thing that made the park not fun is there are a ton of flies there. I didn't have any food with me and they followed me everywhere. I wish someone could spray the place or figure out why there are so many flies. I didn't see any loose piles of dog droppings that would explain the numbers. There are no separate areas for small and large dogs. All the dogs I encountered were friendly with responsible owners. I shall return with fly repellent next time. read more

What an amazing dog park. It's so big, plenty of room for your dogs to run and go crazy, very clean and I'm happy that people respect it enough to clean up after their fur babies. They also placed fly traps all over to help with the fly issue, I really appreciate they did this, even though flies are not so avoidable. I watch dogs part time, so this place is a god send when I need a place to have my energetic dogs run around. My friend and I took out our dogs to this dog park and while we were happy regarding how spacious the dog park was, we weren't so thrilled that there were owners (two in particular) that refused to pick up their dog's poop, claiming they had no bags even though the park provided these bags for them. It's a good thing to mention that the first thing we noticed when entering the dog park was the smell of poop and the amount of flies throughout the park. I think the culture within the park is to not pick up their dog's poop.... Fair warning, this dog park was majority dirt and wood chips so you can't really see if there is poop on the ground or not. So be careful! In addition, our dogs refused to drink the water that was at the water fountain which was a bit concerning since they were drinking our water and other people's waters. In conclusion, my friend and I would rather drive out of the way to Hawaii Kai Dog Park than to come here again. read more

I never learned how to appreciate dog parks until we got our puppy, Ginger, four months ago. This is the closest park to us at Salt Lake. The whole park isn't covered in grass. It's half grass, half dirt. Lots of raised tree roots on the ground. I know it's inevitable but there are a serious amount of flies at this park. I've been to a few parks that had less flies. They do have things that hang along the fences to get rid of them but they might need something better. We avoid bringing Ginger to the park when it's raining because it can be really muddy. There are a good amount of dogs that visit this park! There are usuals that come very often and ever since the first time we visited this park, I've noticed that they have built a familiar community here. People know each other and their dogs already and everyone else watches over the other dogs and lets the owners know if their dog has made a mess. One thing that could be changed about this place is their fencing. Today I witnessed two dogs jump over the fence and run to the road. It would be a lot of help if the fences were higher. Came here today with my friend and kali, my 9 month french bulldog and Hilo, 1 year old mixed frenchie and pit. Ample parking space! i love how its shaded, a bit forest-y in the back, a lot of picnic tables/chairs, and it has a water station for the dogs. Kali was so tired and the dog owners were very nice and friendly. Nobody bullied Kali today..lol.. it was a great day for my furbaby! read more

Great bark park. Lots of shade, covered parking. Playground for the human puppies. Has a wooded area where the dogs can play hide and seek with others. Didn't care for the mandatory off-leash rule, as my pup is still not the best behaved. Also another dog stole his ball and lost it in the woods. But someone at the tennis courts gave him a new one. Plastic bags are readily available, as donated plastic bags and not new purchased bags. If you do donate. Please stuff it in one by one through the top of the dispenser. My boys love this park. It's close to our house and very clean. Tom helped me get acquainted with the rules and owners. Everyone is friendly. The park is looking better every time we go. They're trying to fix the fly problem and providing doggie bags. This park is probably fine if you have a fixed female, but if you have an intact male i would be VERY cautious in bringing him here around the 5pm-7 window. The regular dogs there seem to single out intact males and it has happened since the first time we have come. Our dog is a target to mostly neutered and sometimes intact males from the moment he walks in. Usually it is swiftly avoided because we like to actually play with our dog at the park, so we're always close and able to protect him. That changed a couple days ago when our dog was basically mauled by every dog in the park. It started with one biting ours and my husband picked our dog up by his harness and, by the way, GOT BITTEN shooing away the first dog because he was the only guy right there with them to stop it (only person to actually see it too). Then the second jumped in (he is a huge Rhodesian ridgeback, intact, seemingly adolescent maybe about 7 mths with poor training and dominance issues, he had bitten my dog before, tried to bite his testicles off a week before all this) causing the harness keeping him safe to break and when he tried to run away the rest of the dogs at the park got into it and all started attacking him. The other owners refused to help my husband and I get their dogs off of ours and were telling us to leave them alone. My dog would have died if we left him in that frenzy. He was the only target! The worst part is he didn't defend himself at all besides running, until the very end of it when he was surrounded i think he did snap on one dog. Yet, even though our dog is COVERED in bite marks all down his whole body on his legs and face and neck, HE WAS BLAMED!! Not only did all the owners allow it to happen they blamed the victim without any apology! I don't know if they wanted to blame him because he's an American Staffordshire mix (pit bull type dog) or because they see him in small squabbles ever so often (he literally always gets jumped on I don't understand he's never started one) but either way HE is the one who was attacked and bitten first. The real problem with this park is that none of the owners watch their dogs; they are there for social hour. They let their dogs loose and don't bother to pay any attention to what they're doing. Their dogs obviously, as seen by how they react to commands, have no concept of not being the alpha in the home so they think they can pick fights against other males in public. You can argue against pack mentality and dominance training all you want, but the reason my dog doesn't start fights even though he is an intact male is because we show him that he is not, nor will he ever be alpha (no I don't beat my dog or hold him down, it's all about body language and making them understand I chose what our next move is or nothing will ever happen, dogs were bred to be followers). These dogs always nip and growl at our dog without a word from their owners. They walk all over their owners and they try to initiate fights to alpha over him, even though he is only there to PLAY and has never shown any aggressive behavior or body language. I think some owners just don't understand dog body language or any pack mentality so they think it couldn't be THEIR DOG right? Wrong. There are some serious dominance issues at this park and we wouldn't go back without airhorns to break aggressive outbursts and a spiked collar to protect our dog's neck. Ridiculous. Be warned and keep your babies safe; if you don't the whole park will blame your dog for getting mauled. I know those pictures don't look that bad, no he doesn't need stitches and he's not completely taken out, he's okay-ish, but our boy is pretty big and most of the dogs latched onto him were small, not-so-powerful dogs. If he was less stalky or shorter this would have been way more horrific. When you pet him you can feel swollen lumps all over his body from all the dog bites. My heart is sad for our boy and I am thoroughly disappointed with those owners. Also everyone who says the park is a good size is mistaken!! Especially if you have a high energy dog that loves to run! Its also always muddy and gross and weirdly smells like rotting meat? May be the fly traps, but they dont even work. Would much rather find an open field park and play with our dog ourselves with friends' dogs without stranger dogs running up to my baby and instantly aggressing him before he even gets the chance to greet them! The physical location of this dog-park is great. Located in Moanalua Gardens, right off the freeway. Its a nice sized park, shaded by large monkey-pod trees with a couple of picnic tables. It's next door to a city park with a basketball court and public restrooms that are relatively clean. Unfortunately, there are a couple of drawbacks to this park. One is the neighboring park. Almost every time I've visited, there were vagrants hanging out and drinking in the parking lot. It makes it feel a bit unsafe at times. The last time, I even witnessed a pretty big dice game going on. The second drawback is the cool shady environment. Be sure to bring your insect-repellant, because the mosquitos at this park are hungry. I once got eaten alive and learned my lesson. The real reason I come here is for my dogs, who love it every time. It gives them a chance to run around with other dogs, socialize and play. They get absolutely covered in dirt, so be sure to plan for a bath after making a trip here. The have a drinking fountain with a bowl, but I always bring my own water as the fountain is a bit far away from the tables. Lots of towels for the car ride home are also a great idea for muddy dogs. read more

I like this place. It has so much shade, and despite all of the recent rain (and threats of rain) it wasn't muddy. I'll say up fronIt, my dog does not like the dog parks. She prefers wide un-fenced areas. But for convenience (I wanted to get exercise and I had just given blood so I couldn't exercise) I brought her here, for the 3rd time in my life. Again, I fell in love with the hillside. I could see dogs enjoying themselves this in terrain...in my mind's eye anyway. Usually there are one, two or none dogs when I go, lol. Of course, I didn't appreciate the large dog poops that were left behind by careless and inattentive dog owners, but I've done it before. Just always got to keep an eye out for the land minds. I did appreciate the blaring 80's music coming from somewhere, which I swear has been playing since, well, the 80s. Like every time I go there, there is music. I don't know. Of the dogs that did show while I was there (one small and 2 large) all of the owners were super responsible. I have to say, in comparison to other areas, maybe because Moanalua/Salt Lake is more transient the people are more hesitant around strangers, but I did appreciate them being attentive to their pooches. I still believe dog parks are a lovely feature for any area and I hope it continues to be utilized and enjoyed by the dog community. read more

Located right next to the basketball & tennis courts near Moanalua Intermediate School [Ed. Note: What's with the "middle school" name change?] and beneath the on-ramp to the Moanalua Freeway. Lots of parking if you arrive before the "rush" (8-9AM weekends, 5-6pm weekdays). I believe the park closes for maintenance every Tuesdays until noon. I'd say this off-leash dog park is 70% dirt and 30% grass, with an option for dogs to "hunt" through a small woodsy hillside behind the dry fountain. Volunteers have been known to leave an arsenal of plastic bags in case you run out, so there's absolutely NO EXCUSE for anyone to leave their dog's poop on the ground. [Ed. Note: I don't care if you're busy chatting it up with a fellow dog owner. Get your peripherals on and be on high alert when your dog starts circling and squatting!!] Every so often, someone will be nice enough to leave a few tennis balls or random dog toys behind for all to enjoy. There are three picnic tables, but I wouldn't recommend anyone to actually have a picnic there since a lot of small dogs chill out on top of the table. This dog park is so nice! I took my puppy (don't worry, she's full vaccinated) here a few times now and she loves it! There's lots of trees which provides good shade and around 3-4 benches to relax on while your pup runs around. They have water fountains for you and your pup, and there's even random tennis balls that are either forgotten, or they're there cause the park provides them? Not sure. There are a variety of dogs here which is sometimes worrisome because my puppy is so small and sometimes large dogs don't know their own size. But we always make sure to keep a close eye on her. There are a lot of flies and mosquitoes here, but as long as your dog is on HEARTWORM PREVENTION and you wear long pants, the flies and mosquitoes shouldn't be too much of a problem besides being annoying. After all that being said, it's conveniently located near where we live, so we'll definitely be going there again. read more

Not the prettiest dog park around but it sure is the friendliest! Tom is the main man in charge and he takes the time to meet new dogs and owners. He has done so much to revamp this park over the years. I love how the regulars will just talk story with you and their dogs are just there to play. The park is large and there's even a sloped area at the back if your dog wants to go off roading lol. The main con is that there are a lot of flies and not a lot of grass. I just wear long workout pants and I'm good to go! My dog loves all parks but I feel most at home at Moanaloa Dog Park because of the people and their friendly pups. read more

In my brief stint as a dog watcher, I came over here at an off chance to just hang out with the K-9 and just to get away from the urban life. This park is nice, but could have been better. Like some Yelp reviews have hinted on, this park can get bad, especially when people come here to drink and get loud. It makes it for a bad situation for the dog park users. While I did see some of that while I was there, I didn't have a bad situation mount to anything else. I just minded my own business and that was that. I guess it's like that anywhere: just a location that just happens to be that way. Located in Moanalua Gardens, you can find it and it's just off the freeway. This was the last time I took the dog out before handing him back to the owner. He seemed happy when he saw my friend, which was pretty good. Homesick, I'm sure, but I had some fun with him after hitting up two dog parks. I enjoyed the open spaces, as I am sure everyone else including the dogs did too. Never had a bad situation, although there can be times where the owners won't care about their dogs when they get into fights with other dogs. "Oh they were just playing" isn't really a good excuse, when you really witness biting, abnormal barking, and clawing at each other. It's good to have social interaction for humans with pets. It's more for the dogs than the humans, but it helps the humans too. While I am not a dog owner yet, I felt pretty cool about being here and hope to have one of my own sometime soon. Let me share the TRUTH about this park.. I have been to all the parks on this island.. It is by far the CLEANEST park you will find.. The community here really goes the extra mile to ENFORCE park rules for the safety of the dogs and owners. Unlike most parks with dirt and grass, moanalua dog park has wood chips to make it much more dry to play on rainy days.. People are always on the watch to make sure NO ONE is allowing their dogs to crap all over and Not clean up.. They are also watching the behaviors of the animals. This Is the biggest park on the island. If you have been to the original first dog park on Oahu over at diamond head you will see the difference in size and appearance. Not many dogs in the early parts of the day, and since the state complained about the fly traps the park has more flies then before. Overall a great park and if you decide not to visit because you don't like rules the rest of us will be happy for you read more

My favorite dog park on the island. There are large grassy areas for the dogs to run. Picnic tables for people to sit and socialize. A faucet for the dogs to get water. And the majority of the owners there watch their dogs and never let "dog disagreements" get out of hand. Don't come directly after a heavy rain because the park can get muddy at times. read more

Friendly people but the park is in a bad place, it's dilapidated and covered in flies which makes me worry about the amount of feces on the ground. It's right next to a tennis, skate, and basketball court which creates a lot noise that aren't necessarily helpful for more nervous dogs. Usually there is loud music blasting so don't expect a quiet evening. Also don't expect to sit or the flies will find you. They have bag traps hanging around the park, and signs everywhere with someone complaining about who has to buy park dog bags and whatever. There's a fountain in the back that looks like it's been broken for a while and just kind of creates an abandoned feel. The smell is also kind of strong. Overall, not a friendly place for you, your car, or your dog. read more

My first experience at the dog park was not fun. I have a small dog (8lb) he was probably even smaller since I went after he had received all his shots. I thought it would be nice for him to socialize with other dogs. It was super easy to find and really close to my home and I envisioned many play days with my pooch in the future. But that's where it ended As I entered through the double gate, I still had my dog on his lead, 2 dogs ran over to him and pinned him to the ground right at my feet. The owners were sitting on the bench with there baby in a car seat. The husband had to run over And control one of the dogs and then the wife had to get the other. I yanked my poor dog through the air while still attached to his lead, into my arms he was covered in dirt and slobber. Not harm was done and the owners felt horrible at what happened. I was just in shock. So that was my first experience at at this dog park. So it has dampened my dreams of mid day park runs with my dog. I have gone a few more times, (with my husband to ease my terror) and in terms of other dog parks I've been to it's on the lower end of my list. I find even though there is lots of shade, this seems to lead to A LOT of flies,More then any other park I've visited. And although there is a grassed area at the back, the majority of the park is dirt. To me the biggest down side is that they don't have a small dog section. I feel much safer with my dog at the park when I know the jaws of bigger dogs he may annoy are behind a fence. read more

Honestly a wonderful place to let your dogs out to run and play with others. Very kind and unbothered place for the dogs to be themselves, it is always nice to see other dogs to and to talk to the owners about there story of there dog, how they take care of them, how they are, what they eat and etc. just wish there was more big trap because every time I go there. Always end up with mosquito bites. Not to sure how it works if we were to bring our own or something. But highly recommended bringing bug repellent if anything. Funny cause there are random tennis balls lying on the grass of the park. So if you forgot to bring there toys, do not worry. Especially the dog fountain. Part Six in my "Moanalua-A-Day" neighborhood Series. No, I don't have a dog, but if I did, I'd bring them here to play with their fellow canines. Moanalua Dog Park or 'Ilio Hau'oli Paka, meaning "happy dog park" in Hawaiian. It was opened in 2004 and was the first C&C of HNL off-leash dog park. I always pass this doggy oasis, which is part of the Moanalua Community Park, on my runs and it's a nice change in scenery to see all sorts of dogs roaming about, playing, sniffing butts, sometimes ripping each other apart while their owners chat on benches or try to pry their dogs off each other. 'It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt'; I guess that can apply to dogs too. There's a water fountain here with a lower faucet to fill doggie bowls. As people mentioned in other reviews that the Moanalua Dog Park is in a great location and the dog park itself is pretty big, BUT the reason I have to give this place 1 star is because of a situation that happened when I first got my dog. I was all for taking my dog to a dog park to socialize and was looking forward to it; my fiancee said that he didn't think it was a good idea, but I ignored him and we took my dog there anyway. I should have listened to him. At first, there was only one dog there and it was pretty tame. A little later, that dog left, and a guy with three dogs showed up. 2 were medium-sized (I can't remember what kinds of dogs they were) and 1 small dog. My dog's pretty small (Shitzu-Maltese mix) and he wanted to play with the dogs, so I let him play with them. The 2 medium dogs started rolling my dog like a log around the park while the small dog constantly barked at my dog. I could hear my dog whining and crying. The owner did NOTHING to stop his dogs while my fiancee chased them down and was able to pick our dog up. The owner of the three dogs saw what happened, but made no motion to apologize or anything. I was super upset and near tears since it was a terrible experience for me and my dog. We vowed NEVER again to go to that dog park and have always driven farther out to the dog park at the Humane Society. At least the owners area actually watching their dogs there and we have the option to take our dog to the small dog park located farther up near the employee parking lot. read more

Visited Moanalua Dog Park the other day for the first time and it may actually be my last. Don't get me wrong, people there are very friendly, the dogs are very friendly as well... But there are TONS of flies there! I couldn't enjoy myself because flies kept landing on my legs. There is also lots of dirt than there is grass, so my dog got completely dirty afterwards. I like how convenient it is since it is the closest dog park to where I live. There is also lots of shade and seating. I just couldn't stand the flies and dirt! If I have nothing to do and I'm in a good mood, I'll probably come back so my dog can play. But I don't plan on coming here on a regular basis. read more

I can say that this is my favorite park on the whole island. Like any other park it has it's good and bad points. I have a husky and she loves this place. We're here almost every Saturday and Sunday. Love the diverse crowd and friendly people. Bad Points: - Not much grass - Next to a elementary school and kid's park (we've seen little children going in and out of the park with no parental supervision) - We've seen a bum sleeping on one of the tables for the past 2 weeks. - My dog has only gotten into 2 quarrels here. People were very good about watching their dogs so both incidents were very quick and harmless. Our dog enjoyed his time there. Yes there is a bit of red dirt there, but dogs are supposed to get dirty! If you don't wash your dog after taking him to a dog park anyway, c'mon. But anyway, I enjoyed my first experience there and I'm sure my dog did too. There's this lovely memorial set up by a gentleman that lost his dog and I think it's touching that he wanted to do that. Just goes to show you that it's a very close community. We actually met a friend for our puppy there -- a big german shepherd. Good park, lots of area for the dogs to roam and play. Just wish they had more grass so my dog that's white doesn't always need a bath after playing lOl. I have a little dog and when we go, usually there are lots of big dogs and very few small dogs. So when he tries to play with them they're just a little too rough for his taste or end up tripping over him while running cause he's so small compared to them so he gets a little timid. Not sure if its just the time or days that I go. They do leave plastic bags in case you need some but it's better if you bring your own baggies and leave those for need only cases. SMALL DOG OWNERS BEWARE!!! Just left the park ten minutes ago. The park itself is alright, needs to be more green if you ask me. Lots of flies, as most reviews mention. But the thing that got me most upset is the fact that NOT EVERYONE FOLLOWS THE RULES, especially the one to always watch your dog. I get it, you wanna talk story with other owners. But please watch your fricking dog. My dog got bit all bc its owner wasn't paying attention and probably socializing with another owner. Russo is small, maybe about 12 pounds. He's a miniature pinscher/chihuahua mix. Today there were more big dogs than small dogs, I'd say a 1 to 5 ratio. We went over to the area where there were the smaller dogs, just to be safe. The owners of the dog Russo was playing with began to pack and I overheard them say "let's go because some assholes don't know how to handle/watch their dogs". Sure enough, a big dog comes over and starts chasing Russo. It was all fun and games until I hear the bigger dog snarl and try to bite Russo. What did the owner do, you ask? Nothing. So we decided to leave. Mind you everyone likes to sit on the benches and talk as their dogs run around. That's fine, as long as you know where your dog is. As we were walking towards the gate, my bf put Russo down to have some water at the water fountain. Out of nowhere, this huge German Shepard and two other big dogs start chasing Russo, and one pins him down AND STARTS BITING HIM. My dog starts crying his loud pitch cry, all while my bf is trying to get this dog off and I'm screaming for help from the owner WHO CANT BE FOUND. Russo got away with a few bites, we don't know who the hell the owner was because no one came up to apologize to us, but then again we just wanted to get the hell out of there and get Russo checked out. It just bothers me that we didn't know WHO the owner was and it's most likely bc he/she wasn't watching their dog to know that it was biting other dogs. If you have smaller dogs, just beware. Not all big dog owners are as negligent as some I've encountered in this park, but still, this is your warning. read more

Nice size, fenced in, easy parking, and plenty of shade. Loses a point or two for having more dirt than grass and for having a lot of flies. Most (with a couple rare exceptions) of the humans and dogs are friendly. read more

This dog park is nice and inclosed. It looks like the woods part isn't but it is. Everyone there seemed really nice and all the dogs when I went were friendly. I'll definitely be bringing my dog back. read more

love this place bc of location ..10 min drive from home. been here twice and my dog loves it but mostly when there's dogs his size. I think best time to come out be mid afternoon when other dogs are there too. parking never seems to be a problem. lots of space for the dogs to run and keep their own space whichever they prefer. read more

Went to this park for the first time on Saturday. Had a very hard time finding it as its UNDER the freeway. Don't let that discourage you though, it's a great park. Good size, lots of parking, and even a wooded area on the hill for the pups to play in. Two thumbs way up! read more
