5 years later I now have a 2015 mazda cx-5 touring and here I am back & getting all four tires replaced after buying my suv back 2017 from Mazda Dealership on Capitol - My suv was in desperate need of new tires the new yokahama that I had on when I bought my suv, are now low thread. Used Charles for a pre purchase inspection at the dealer. Money well spent! Charles was very thorough with his inspection and pointed out trouble spots. He talks thru the severity of the issues and gives an estimate. He will also give you his opinion on whether he'd buy the vehicle or not. I was buying a used car and so called Charles for a pre-purchase inspection. He reached on site right on time, did a rigorous inspection and emailed me the report. I didn't even have to be onsite! I booked an appointment for Charles to come out to do a pre-purchase inspection on a used vehicle we were planning to purchase at a dealership. I booked through the website and he got back to me by text with the total price verification and meet-up location. I would highly recommended his service before buying a used vehicle. It really gives us a peace of mind to have someone come out to the dealership and inspect the vehicle for any possible problems that are not communicated to you about the vehicle from either the dealership or carfax. He brings all his equipment and will test drive the vehicle either with you or for you. He did mention some things that might be a problem with the used vehicle we were planning to buy and how we might approach negotiating the price with the dealership. Charles is knowledgeable about cars but the price is not worth it. I requested help to look at my car that was not starting and had a coolant leak. I told him over the phone that it is probably the starter and the water pump. His charges were $50 to come out to my place and another $120 per hour. I thought that if he replaces the starter then it will be worth the trip. So I made an appointment, he showed up slightly late but I can understand there could be traffic. Looked at the car showed a trick to start the car and gave me a quote of $730+ to fix both and he told me that each requires ~1 1/2 hrs for a total of ~3 hrs. Additionally, he said that he did not have that much time that day so he will have to come back. All this he finished in ~15 mins and charged me $170. I felt ripped off to come and give me a quote of $730+ initially and then bringing it down to around $675 saying that since he did not use the complete hr he can give $60 towards the repair. I got the complete repair done in the shop for less than $475. So in a nutshell I got charged $170 to show the trick of starting the car with a bad started which is already available on youtube. The lesson learn't is before picking a mobile mechanic one needs to estimate whether the job can be finished in one hour, if not then it is just an expensive diagnosis call. read more

I had a problem with my car starting it up. I thought there was a problem with my starter and battery, I ordered the parts just to make sure it can be replace right away when Charles gets here. Charles was fantastic! My husband and I called him to inspect a used Prius we were considering buying off Craigslist. He was able to come the same day, but understandably he was busy so he had a limited window (a good sign!). While the owner told us the car had never been in an accident, Charles was able to point out multiple signs to us that the car had possibly been in a large wreck and how it had been repaired. He also wrote up a clear list of what needed to be repaired in general, and how much that would cost us, which we were able to us as an arguing point with the seller to get him to lower his rate. My car wouldn't crank. These days it's easy to check the battery so i did, but the problem was further into the circuit. I didn't want to have it towed in, so called Charles. He explained all the possibilities over the phone, including how he could have parts for the most common failures (in this case, starter motor and solenoid, and perhaps some others). He actually has a pretty good system worked out: when you decide on him, you just text him a message with your location, then confirm the day before. (I had to do it on a weekend to avoid missing work.) Anyhow, he came out, and worked systematically from the most reachable parts of the starter circuit (the battery) towards the starter. He verified the state of the battery, and discovered pretty quickly it was the solenoid. Actually, i guess i should say the 'remote' solenoid, as this vehicle has one that's close to the top and another close to the starter itself. Charles explained all that to me, and the rationale for why it was done that way, and then replaced the unit. (He also explained why there were so many cables connected to it, besides just the switch, input, and output.) His testing was pretty methodical, going from the most accessible elements of the circuit to the least accessible ones. Because he was so fast, i thought i'd bring up another problem that i had, which was the way the transmission had been behaving. He said, "Let's check", and did so very quickly. This was not something he could have prepped for because i mentioned nothing about it on the phone. It was low. So he verified with his database that he had the right sort of transmission fluid for the car, and brought it to the right level. He showed me how to read it, and also how he could tell that it was at operating temperature (so that the readings would be correct). And even in bringing it to the right level, he was methodical, not just dumping in a bunch at once, but putting in a little, then a little more, and so on until the reading was just right. So not only does the car now crank, but it drives a lot better than it did before. He seems to have good tools, and understands how to use them well, as well as knowing a lot about cars. So i'd recommend him very highly. read more

(UPDATE) - 10 min after I leave this review, this guy also rudely calls people back and harasses them about any reviews they leave... Called and started to explain my situation with my truck, that I attempted an oil change and cant get the filter off. He cuts me off and says he doesn't work on diesels and doesn't do a job some one already started. I was like, " I just tried to take off the filter and cant get the angle to get a grip to take it off". He told me to put a screw driver through the filter... Based on that response, I wouldn't trust him to work on my cars. Say you stick a screw driver through the filter and its still too tight and all the screw driver does is allow the filter to pour oil all over itself (making it more slippery, and further impossible to take off). Another thing that can happen is the metal and filter tear, you tear the bottom half of the filter off and then you are really screwed with a broken filter on your engine thats frozen on there and impossible to grip or take off. ***SHOW SOME CLASS*** read more

Hi Chuck, We bought the Astro van from you a month ago and had been trying to reach you for two weeks. The van broke down in less than 200miles after we purchase it from you. The transmission was completely gone. We were stranded in the middle of 5 freeway and the van was towed to nearest body shop. We definitely did not expect the transmission was a complete lost since you said it was rebuilt a year half ago. Without any better option and not able to reach you for advice, we had to dump the van and all the money was down the drain. It was definitely a very bad experience and also make us lost faith. For those of you thinking about buying a new used car call Mobile Auto Works before you do. It will save you money in the long run to know if the car you intend to buy has hidden problems and Charles can help you negotiate a fair price. Here's my experience: I was hoping to buy a 2010 Honda Fit from a private party, but didn't know very much about the inner workings of the car. I met with the owners, seemed like trustworthy people, test drove it, and everything seemed fine. We agreed to meet up the next day to fill out a deposit form in order to hold the card till Monday, when I could get the money I need from my bank. This sounded fair to me, but I wanted to make sure everything was in order before I put any sort of deposit into the car, so I called Mobile Auto Works, I was a little hesitant to hire a mechanic because I thought I was already going to be putting a lot of money into buying the car; I didn't want additional expenses. But I'm extremely happy that I did. I had told the car owners that I would be over with the deposit at 2:30pm and that I had hired a mobile mechanic to take a look at it before we transferred any money, they agreed. When I arrived the owner began to rush me telling me that they had to leave soon and that they had other people that wanted to look at the car, I told them that I was serious about buying the car, and so long as everything was in good condition (like they said it was) I would not hesitate to buy the car. When the mechanic arrived the owner began to look nervous and agitated asking him how long it would take, when Charles said it could take up to an hour, the owner said she had to leave right away. Charles, My girlfriend, and I were all starting to become pretty suspicious... Charles defended me and spoke up to the owner while I just stood there baffled and confused. In the end the owner then said she had to go to work and got in the car and drove away. I don't think I need to tell you that I didn't end up buying the car. If not for Charles I would most likely have been suckered into buying that car or just leaving them a deposit and having them run off with it. It was definitely worth the money to hire Charles, I intend to do so again when I look at my next used car. read more

I called up Mobile Auto Works on a very short notice - had decided on buying a used car and wanted to do it soon, but needed a professional opinion. Based on Yelps' suggestion I called Charles Armstrong. I asked him whether he could drive down to a dealership in a couple of hours. Can be done, he said. So that was that. I was not sure whether spending money on another "opinion" was good idea. But I was convinced otherwise in a very short time. Charles scrutinized the car closely, uncovered that it had been in a minor accident that the Carfax report didn't show (!), spotted a coolant leak, a shock leak, and bunch of minor issues. Had I not got his opinion one or more of the following would have happened: 1. I would have discovered each of these things during my first servicing of the car and felt cheated. 2. Something would have broken down before I got to my first servicing. Apart from the cost of the fix, I may have had to suffer through hauling the car (or paying for it) from the middle of nowhere to a workshop. 3. If I discovered the problems individually, on separate occasions, I'd have to pay for service charge (say, for diagnosis) piecemeal. Now I have been told everything that is wrong with my car in one go. You'd agree none of the above look very appealing. Based on the report Charles handed me (he carries a printer in his vehicle, true Lincoln lawyer style) the dealer has agreed to negotiate. Now I don't know yet how much would they lower the price - too early to say - but nevertheless, I am very happy with the service and decided to leave a review. If you're a layman considering purchase of a used vehicle, don't think twice - get this guy to look at whatever you have decided on. If nothing, it will help you factor in the costs of maintenance and fixes needed down the line. read more

Went and picked up the part to find out the part store have gave him a coil that did not fit in the car. he went back grabbed a better coil at no additional cost.
