The cafe is very cute and sits below street-level right on Main Street. There always seems to be a line and the staff takes it in stride and very polite. Atmosphere aside I was not impressed with their iced coffee. It was exceptionally week and tasted more like tea then coffee. I also found their incentive system a little stingy. Their punch card proclaims, "Any Coffee or Tea Drink After 10 Cups!" then in small letters underneath, "$2.75 Ma Value." :/ They have decent reviews here on Yelp, maybe I just need to try another drink the next time I'm in Brattleboro. read more

I sometimes stop in here to play some cards while sipping the mexican hot chocolate. During the summer though I will get a lemon lime fizz or a mocha Joy drink instead. Many consider it to be the best coffee in town and will drink no other. Mocha Joes is a fixture of Brattlboro life with both familys, business men, and hippie types all joining in for something to drink. I do think they should get a more variety of pastries and goodies though. read more

It's an okay coffee shop. The coffee is okay. The baristas aren't very happy to see you. The atmosphere is cute peppered with the random, smelly person coming in and sitting next to you. It's probably a great place if you smoke since I always see half a dozen smokers drinking coffee and smoking outside the place and blocking half the sidewalk. Oh God. So many hippies. And unfortunately the place is in the basement, and has rather echo-y walls, and it was (in October) full of fatter tourists and their screaming kids. I felt a little claustrophobic. No free wi-fi and only one outlet, so it's not a great laptop venue either. I have to give three stars because, well, the coffee was good (although EXTREMELY SLOW -- again -- hippies!) and if you are looking for this kind of grungy vibe, this is where you'd go. read more

Great iced coffee and a Maple Syrup Latte that knocks the socks off any Starbucks sugar filled frappa whatever. Next time I'll ask for it a little less sweet, ended up mixing both the iced coffee and maple latte, but most people will like the sweetness level. Mocha Joe's is a charming local favorite with a nice selection of hot beverages. It can get really busy because of its central location and somewhat slow service. The seating area is small however and can fill up fast. There is also a dearth of electrical outlets so if you want to work online come prepared with a fully charged battery. Also the bathroom could use a good scrubbing and a more sanitary soap dispenser. read more

I read the reviews of this place and was excited to "check it out." Imagine how disappointed I was when I asked the server what the difference was between the Costa Rican and Brazilian blend and she answered, "They're from different countries." And this was the answer AFTER she checked with another server because she could not answer! If this wasn't bad enough, she proceeded to give me $2.00 change when she owed me $14.00. I think the servers/cashiers should receive more training at this cafe. On the plus side, it does smell awesome when you walk in. read more

After reading all the good reviews my wife and I came in for an early cup of coffee and a muffin on the first day of our weekend get a way. When entering this lovely coffee shop is when things went wrong. We greeted the barista with a friendly "Good Morning" who's response was a gruff "We're cash only today!" She then proceeded to make the big pots of coffee without asking us if we wanted anything. (We were the only customers in the shop!) We then asked if they had muffins. She said "Just what's out!" in the same gruff voice even though we could see 2 boxes of muffins on the back counter. She then recommended that we go across the street to Amy's for muffins and coffee. We still ordered the coffee which was good and then proceeded to Amy's where we had amazing pastries, a lovely experience and a welcoming staff. Needless to say we will be going to Amy's for both coffee and pastries tomorrow morning. Stopped by this cozy coffee shop on the way home after a full day of skiing at Stratton Mountain. I ordered a tea fog which is tea steamed with milk and my fiance got a hot chocolate with an artistically drawn leaf on top. Both were delicious, as well as the chocolate chip cookie we got too. It was pretty busy in here around 5pm, but we managed to snag a table. If I lived around here, I would probably be a regular. I would love to try other drinks on their menu. Definitely will have to swing by again when we are up in VT skiing. read more

Cozy downstairs location, fresh roasted french roast beans that glisten, interesting & changing artwork on display. It can be a little crowded on days like today when some bozo with a booming baritone decides to talk on his cel phone in the back (he was sitting there with nothing in front of him on the table and kept calling people and saying he was working on something for the next hour...) but this is a fluke -- really it's a great place to work or socialize. If you need a plug for your laptop, look up -- they're all in the ceiling. One strange feature is that if you're here at dusk, it always seems later than it is -- it's about 3/4 underground, and the windows open to the E, w/a row of buildings across the street. Going here today made me miss Brattleboro. Stopped in early on a Sunday morning from out of town and the line was already a bit long at 7:45am. The absolute sweetest and most patient/personable barista was calmly and attentively taking and making each other. I was so impressed with her and the space was super cozy and inviting. I liked the atmosphere, and visited Mocha Joes twice again after my first visit this weekend. Its centrally located and has good hours. I liked the freshness of the food, the good bagels, and the coffee was fine. A bit strong, so I just added some water. I had a croissant sandwich, a raspberry oat bar, and huevos rancheros, in my three visits. The eggs are Vermont eggs, they use good cheese and fresh veggies. I found the service cheerful, and one young man today went out of his way to be amazingly helpful, and make sure I got what I'd asked for. Nice, nice fellow!! I enjoyed breakfast there, and there were sufficient tables and space, so that I spent a leisurely hour, reading and eating. It was perfect. Why did I not give it 5 stars then? Traveling on my way back from Mount Snow, I decided to stop into Mocha Joe's to pick up some whole beans for my wife. This is a great little cafe in Brattleboro, and we will certainly be making it a point to stop here every time on the way home from Dover. The beans were expertly roasted and aromatic. Great coffee. Really yummy scones. Barista makes it hard to feel like older female patrons are welcome. There was a line of 4 people waiting to order, some of us trying to squeeze in a coffee on a work break...as my turn came up, the barrista felt is was more important to turn his back to the counter and begin drawing extra blue accent lines on already completely legible letters on a graphic behind the wall. When I asked if I could order, the answer was basically no, I have to get things done with the wall....Thats cool - I can go elsewhere. Thanks man! Good luck with your art. read more

This place might have been the most unfriendly coffee shop I have ever been to and I have been to Dunkin' and Starbucks. I arrived at 3:50 PM and the barista was trying to kick everyone out of the shop due to the closing In 10 min. Yet we still had 10 min left to place our orders. She was not polite in the slightest. She explained that it takes 3 min per drink to make and really was rushing us through. Not to mention the name is Mocha Joe's and they didn't even have chocolate to make a mocha latte. No apologies, said they make another...another 10 minutes wait and I returned to the counter to see the mocha sitting there...no announcement, didn't come to tell us...just a nice cold mocha at that point. Nothing special in terms of the coffee- the Americano was rather weak IMO. But they did have some other fun, vermont-inspired flavor. I'm rating this place low, because I agree, "Meh. I've experienced better." more than any of the other choices. The oatmeal cookie was BEYOND OLD. .... like something that the reduced section of a bakery wouldn't even serve. I bet it was sitting there for at least a week. I tried to dip it into coffee, but yuck - it was still OLD and there was no way I could pretend it was biscotti. Found this place while driving through, took a look at the reviews and decided to give this place a shot. Ambiance/Waitstaff: Located at a busy intersection in the heart of downtown Brattleboro. The door to enter the place seems as if it was made for little people/elves which I rather enjoyed since it made me feel like a giant having to stoop down to get through the doorway. Down a few stairs and you arrive at the counter to order your drink and peruse the delicious goods they have on display. A pretty modern look with several small tables a bathroom and polished/stained concrete floors. I was fully intending on just getting a coffee (roasted by them which is always a plus). Then I heard the siren's call of their Aztec brownie ( dusted with cinnamon and cayenne pepper). The woman behind the corner caught me staring lustily at the Aztec brownie (I was a little embarrassed). She demurely stated that the Aztec brownie was one of her favorites so I naturally got that as well. Coffee/Pastry: The coffee was quite good, I got the medium blend which was just right for strength and acidity and paired nicely with the brownie. The brownie was pretty incredible, I actually called back to sing my praises to the girl who recommended the brownie (you rock). Pretty phenomenal, probably not for everyone, my lady wasn't as enthralled as I was with the brownie (bonus... more for me) I'm thinking this was the cayenne that she wasn't too crazy about. Bottom Line: I would emphatically recommend this place to whomever would listen. Ensure you enunciate the size of your drink, as the employees here cannot differentiate 'small' from 'large.' I find pointing at the cup size helps them comprehend - visual cue. The coffee is decent.
