Today I had the pleasure of eating at this establishment. It had been recommended to me by so many and I was in the area so I thought I'd check it out. As soon as you walk in, you are in the battle of the drums between the Kumasi and the Djembe. So loud I couldn't think . I did ask to turn it down a few times, in the middle of my meal the Chef said I could eat outside. On that note I ordered way too much. The fried chicken was delicious !! Not greasy at all. But huge, sorry today I ordered two thighs that were the size of one large breast. A little condiment of shaved coconut and chive was on the side. Any sides were à la carte. I did try the " Cabbage Salad" that had a nice flavor, but was overdressed and is mostly iceberg lettuce, and rice with surprisingly sticky rice , so it was kind of yummy. The chicken came with one sauce I got the curry. It was divine.. & my friend got the chicken bites and some kind of mayo. I was going to leave a five star review because the food was that good however, on the receipt they charged $.92 for the containers and eating utensils. I'm disheartened because if they offered an alternative like a plate and regular silverware, I could see not adding it into their cost. If I refuse to pay for the containers, how would I eat it on that note the chef was nice enough to me to have me try a couple of items that I didn't have to pay for. Which I greatly appreciated and that is why I'm leaving such a nice review. I do recommend eating here, but take it home. Or call for delivery, they have their own AP. I was in that area, driving from one point to another. I wanted to pick up something really quick on the way. I decided to order Spam Musubi (rice and spam), a Byte (mini fried chicken), and tapioca tea! My girl went into the store and had the food ready within 3 minutes, which is really awesome as we were in a hurry. However, we were really disappointed by what was inside that bag, as none of them were as good as we expected. 1) Spam Musubi's rice was lost in texture itself. It tasted like old rice. Yet spam was well not bad. We ate all of them. 2) bytes( mini fried chicken) they were overcooked. I attach the picture of it. So hard to chew and meat was nothing there. And I requested mayo but it was not there. But spicy sauce was with them instead in the box. The kids were complaining it was too spicy for mayo. 3) boba tea, I ordered with boba with extra fee. But it was not there just milk tea with brown suger. Later my girl who went to there to pick up, told me the server continued to speak to her even though my girl told to write down as she was deaf. When it comes to customer service, they truly nailed it. So much so that I'd visit just to have interactions here or watch the others interact with the staff during service. Why? They are truly amazing with the way they interact with just about everyone who steps through the door. Perhaps, that man was the owner? I don't know and I don't care. Whoever he is, kudos to him for being awesome. But my reviews are always going to be based on the food alone. And that alone I write of: Beautiful presentation. Arrived fast and furious like I was about to trash this place if it didn't. Hot and steaming. Screaming for me to partake in delight. Everything about that part was amazing. And I accepted it like my life depended on it. Hoorah! Now comes the slight issue. It looked mad good. It smelled mad good. But it wasn't!?! Mochicho Hawaiian brings a little bit of Hawaii to the greater Boston area. The menu is extensive and offers a wide range of delicious food and drinks. Don't skip out of the chicken - it's so flavorful and chicken was so tender. The loco moco burger was something I've never had but absolutely delicious. It's a bit messy so I recommend lots of napkins or eating it with a fork and knife. The space itself is small but minimal seating and some outdoor tables. Staff was very friendly! read more

Mochiko Hawaiian is my favorite take out spot! I always get their mochiko chix plate, I've tried other chicken plate before and I think this one is still the best (as evident from me indulging in it before taking a good photo). Food is soooo good! People were nice and helped us with our order. Such cool art and nice ambiance. We were even given some free sides and extra pieces of chicken! The boba quality was also okay, but not the same as a dedicated boba store like you'll find in the area. We really wanted to like this place but it just flopped for all the wrong reasons. I think they're better off trying to be a food truck and cutting down the menu. The food really needs to be refined as it's super heavy and just doesn't taste that good. The good: Food seems to be made fresh but quick. Restaurant is very clean, service seems friendly enough. The bad: Food doesn't taste that good. They rely on a lot of style over substance and it makes for a weak foundation of the basics. Their seasoning is seriously lacking but they try to make up for it by drowning everything in over the top sauces that just taste artificial. Every dish seems overly sweet and just heavy with the sauces, it leaves a weird after taste and makes it hard to eat. Ordered Almost 90$ of food and the only parts we really enjoyed were the tots and hash browns. The ugly: The drinks are offensively bad. It's prob the first time I've ever gone through two bad teas in a row. The first one was lychee black tea and it tasted soapy like the syrup tasted off and it's similar to what happens at KF lychee tea. After telling the owner he offered a free swap out and I tried the sweet tea with jasmine tea and that was awful too. Literally only took one sip of each drink and by the 2nd drink I just tossed it. Not sure if it's the tea or the syrups and flavoring they use but these items shouldn't be on the menu at all. Final gripe is the music is deafeningly loud. It's a family suburb, not college city Allston. You can barely order or hear anything inside and the choice of music seems like a club. read more

Amazing - food is so delicious and service was great. Everyone just seemed happy. Music and ambiance is fun. Portion sizes on chicken thighs pieces is huge - you do not need 4 pieces unless you are starving. Smoothies are on point. Highly recommend. Order the new Curry Chicken. After opening it only a few drops of Curry Sauce maybe 1.5 oz. I didn't check at the store I wish I did. . It was my first time there. To late to call the store. So today I returned with 90% of the order. Told the lady at register what happened, then I guess the owner came over looked at the order, saided there's Curry sauce on it, see the yellow. I just looked at him and laughed i said are you serious. He saided that how we prepared it. And if you want more Curry I could of paid extra. I said you got to be kidding me. He made me feel like it was my fault. I said is that how you treat a new customer? He did give me a credit. But I didn't need to hear and deal with his attitude. Nice people, good service, interesting space, Decent bathroom. Definitely a place for young people to eat, with things like chicken and ground beef, but there is salad and tofu for grown-ups. You know it's bad when your friend asks what was worst and you can't pick. The only thing that was fine was the staff-they were sweet! First I had the spam musubi. First thought was "the spam-rice ratio is. new. it's tall?" and last thought was "tastes like burned spam" Next I got the garlic soy chicken sandwich. It was very salty but somehow the least egregious of the things I ordered. It was mediocre all around. Then were the tetris tots. They were pure grease and tasted like nothing but oil. This is when my body began to feel weighed down by the grease. I tried the gochujang mayo but it was rly bland and granted me no solace from the tots. Second to last was the mac salad. Just like the tots, it tasted like they bought a bunch of cheap, bulk Food™ from the supermarket and upsold it. It was bland too! I don't even have words to describe how nothing it was. Finally, I tried the $9 taro milkshake. I wouldn't have paid a dollar for it if I had known what it would taste like. It was liquidy nothing with a hint of taro. I tried to drink it but couldn't make it past a couple tired sips. I went in with no expectations and, in fact, was somewhat excited. I could not handle the heat but it tasted so good that I continued on eating it anyways. We had a snafu with one of our allergy friendly orders but they were super supportive and remade our order despite closing time. They were friendly and didn't hold it over us for keeping them late. I miss Hawaii, besides the beautiful weather and beaches, I also miss the food. Growing up in an asian household, some of the local Hawaiian flavors are very familiar and bring me back to some of my fond memories of my childhood with my grandparents. Although they never made loco moco's they made something very similar so I was excited to see I could get one here! This is more of a takeout spot but they have a couple of picnic tables outside if you want to dine there. The menu has a number of popular local Hawaiian dishes like mochiko chicken, garlic shrimp, spam masubi and Kapalua pork. I had my eyes on the loco moco. Ground beef patty with a mushroom gravy over rice topped with an egg. The ground beef patty tasted like a frozen patty because the meat was more gooey like it was stuck together and my dish didn't have enough gravy. The rice needs to get smothered in gravy, so every bite is bursting with flavor. The egg was cooked perfectly but was topped with lots of furikake (a Japanese mixture of seasonings, seaweed and sesame seeds). I would've preferred the furikake on the rice because the egg over powers any flavor from the furikake. Overall the dish was ok hence the rating. read more

I've enjoyed the food here on many past visits. Good flavors, good serving size, nice staff. But my last visit was not so wonderful, so I had some issues that I wanted to share with a manager or the owner-basically someone who would care about what their customer had to say directly to them. It's not easy to send a message. There is no contact info on the website, unless you go to the merchandise page and hit "contact." Their Facebook page has an email address, which I used to send a message. I wrote that I had questions about my receipt. There was a 3% Plastics/Container charge. There was a 3% Service fee. What's that? I included a custom tip-it was noted on the receipt but not added to the total. I also said that I wanted to talk to them about their default suggested tips. They suggest 25%, 20%, 15%. That seems to me very high suggestions for take-out food, and I assume the employees are getting regular wages, not lower "tipped worker wages" like in a sit-down restaurant. To top it off, the food was not so great this visit-though that was not included in my message. I concluded "who can I talk to about this?" I got a reply from "M" asking if I wanted help on an adjustment and "how can we help you?" My reply was "I'm not mad-just want to share my experiences with someone who might want to hear." I got a reply from "S" asking "how can we help?" and do I want to talk to someone on the phone or email. I gave them my phone number. That was three days ago-no response. So now my reply is "Sorry you don't have the time to speak to a customer who had some problems or questions you might want to know about-as a manager or owner. If you find the time, you can read about it on Yelp." This is a local place that I have enjoyed in the past, but won't go back with this kind of customer attention. read more

I'll start off with the positives. The fried chicken is solid. The batter they use to coat it is nice and fluffy and doesn't take away from the amount of chicken, which is a nice change compared to other fried chicken places where it's typical that there is more batter than chicken. The sauces they use for their chicken is also very unique and tasty. I'm giving fewer stars because of the cleanliness of the store. We ate in the store and there are only about 5 chairs to eat at. When we sat down, the counters and floor were quite sticky. I thought the spam musubi was just okay and the thai tea was too creamy and had a strong coffee taste. Was excited to try this place as it advertises as a Hawaiian Chicken spot. Unfortunately was very disappointing and cannot confidently say it was authentic. Food: I got the Classic Mochiko Chicken Sandwich. The sandwich itself was huge, and the chicken itself was a little dry and the breading was too sweet for me. The breading was also too grainy/powdery and was too tight on the chicken and I could tell they over-fried it 6/10. We also got the Tator tots. These were just straight up way too greasy and almost tasted like they fried frozen tater tots 5/10. The matcha boba was decent and not too sweet 7/10. Ambiance: They have unique game-center vibes. Definitely a good spot for high school/younger people to hang out 7.5/10. Price: $10 for the enormous chicken sandwich so the prices are definitely good. Super sad to counteract my own previous review. I love the food here BUT I cannot overlook that I have now had food orders given to me with my allergens buried under other food multiple times. I have informed staff and have had good conversations with them about allergy safety but it seems that some of the evening staff do not take allergies seriously as this is when issues have occurred. I have given the benefit of the doubt and i have tried the restaurant after previous issues. First time without having a problem, only to have issues the next time, ending with me having to take benadryl and manage allergic reactions more than once. It's ironic and a sad joke to take a photo of my allergen on an allergy safe sticker. read more

Food is great, service is great, always a great choice when you're in the mood for a fried chicken sandwich

Mochiko is a fun and unique spot that dishes out Hawaiian food, amidst an otherwise pretty stale dining scene. It's a breath of fresh air full of fun attitude and a little razzing, all in good fun. You'll first notice some loud music outside and will come inside a cool space - a large room - which features an open kitchen and some bar-style seating facing the window, as well as a few chairs. They don't themselves seriously but are some of the friendliest peeps around. And that fun translates into their menu. They have everything from smoothies and bubble tea to chicken sandwiches, açai bowls, and all kinds of other porky and chickeny entres. They expanded the menu recently too so there's a little of everything for anyone. We proceeded to order chicken Bytes ($5) as well as Tetris Tots ($4). Both video game themed and both were fun and perfect for our 6 year old who went to town. Surprisingly big portions too for the price. I went with a Hawaiian classic the Moco Loco plate ($14) which featured a burger patty, some rice, a fried egg, some gravy and a side salad of sorts. The gravy was decent and the dish ate well. I did not love the Mac salad ($3.50) I got though which I found bland and under seasoned. My wife's BBQ chicken sandwich ($10) was massive and she loved it. They fry their chicken in Mochiko (rice) flour which makes their Bytes and chicken sandwiches absolutely delish, and craggly and crunchy. It's awesome. Overall I'd consider this a great gem of an establishment. Again, I want to give the staff a shout-out, they're fun and awesome and the fact that they have been able to bring Hawaiian fare out to the East Coast is no easy feat but they killed it. The artwork is also neat. A fun place to dine alone, with friends and especially with kids. I very much look forward to returning. read more

An interesting spot. You are greeted by interesting decor with a loose video game theme which I can appreciate. The staff were very nice and great you with a smile so that's all a plus. The food itself was good, but, slightly expensive for a fast casual place due to the fact that they charge for utensils and other additional service fees I was unaware of. As I ate at the restaurant how else am I supposed to consume my meal? It does seem primarily like a takeout place, but, if you want to charge for utensils then have reusable ones. Hawaiian restaurants are rare in Boston, so when I found this one I knew I had to try it. I got the Mochiko Chicken as that seems to be a staple choice to compare the dish to. So so juicy and crispy. The mochiko chicken is seasoned and fried wonderfully. There is a light, creamy miso glaze on top which is unique and adds substance to the plate overall. Also comes with mixed greens salad and mac salad as well. Both were great, pretty standard but the chicken was what really made the dish. I've been to plenty of Hawaiian restaurants (outside of Boston / MA) and this is definitely a top 3 for mochiko chicken. Critiques: I wish there was some acidity to the plate (e.g. pickled vegetables or an acidic salad sauce) to balance the chicken/miso sauce as it can become slightly salty after multiple bites. I think that would have elevated the plate to 5 Stars. Additionally, I got the Tiger Tea and the boba was kind of soggy - but I didn't have high expectations ordering boba from a place that's not a boba shop specifically. HOWEVER, the actual drink itself, Kona coffee and black tea was AMAZING. Overall more like a 4.5/5. Will definitely come here and try other entrees on the menu! read more

I had wanted to try this place for a bit because of its GF options (and GF fryer!) and it did not disappoint. We found ourselves in a friendly, colorful atmosphere decorated arcade-style with eccentric wall art and a unique menu display. With easy to read allergy labels and kind staff, navigating allergies was not issue. I got the soy garlic fried chicken over rice with salad, and my partner got the three piece fried bbq chicken. It was fresh, tender, and the flavor was deep. The rice was soft and the pickled veggies were delicious - but I could've used more of them! The food we ordered lasted us for a couple days and reheated wonderfully in an air fryer. I don't remember what drinks we got exactly but I know mine was a lychee boba, and it was delicious.
