WOW! What a change! Sooooo disappointing! Sooooo many reasons I've looked forward to frequent stops: ** Great pizza (love the 'toppings bar' and the ability to completely customize your 'pie') ** Upbeat atmosphere ... terrific 'crew' -- professional, upbeat, customer friendly. ** Fast and efficient service, all while making you ("me") feel welcome *every* time. Stopped by a week ago (4/27/19). What a mess! Waited in line 45 minutes for my pizza. What took so long? Instead of what had previously been one line for order placement and fulfillment, there was one line with two 'stations.' The crew member at the first station was filling online orders ... took orders from those in line only when all online orders had been filled. The crew member at the second station was dedicated to those waiting in line. It looked like a crazy game show -- instead of 'fast and efficient' the pace was 'feverish.' In order to fit the toppings from one 'buffet' line into two lines in the same space, the containers holding the toppings were smaller. So, in addition to two crew members working to fill orders, there was a 3rd crew member dodging in and out refilling the containers. Net losses: ** The rhythm and speed of 'assembly line' pizza making. Ask Henry Ford why he replaced his equivalent of this Mod's new system (where each crew member makes a pizza from start to finish), with his equivalent of this Mod's 'old' system (where each pizza moved 'down the line' from crew member to crew member). ** Sliced tomatoes. Although there are still diced tomatoes, sliced tomatoes were absent. (Maybe they take up too much space.) I asked what was going on -- why the change(s)? -- and was told they were implemented by a new manager. When I asked to speak to the manager, I was told that she wasn't there ... supposed to be there, but wasn't. Important note: Be clear -- Online orders take top priority. They're filled first. Some of the people in line pulled out their phones and ordered online. Yep! -- they moved themselves to the front of the line. Also, Yep! -- it's a brilliant move, 'cause 'jumping the line' is rewarded with faster service. I didn't, only because I was curious to see how long it would take to just 'come in and wait in line for a pizza' now. Fast Forward to Tonight (5/4/19). Stopped by to see if the 'new system' was still in place. Happily surprised to find no one in line. Not one person. Happy there wasn't a long wait -- heck, no wait at all. At the same time, it was eerie -- I've never been there when it's been so empty. Saw only 2 familiar crew members. Asked the new person working the pizza oven if they'd 'fixed the new system.' Her reply -- stone-faced, no smile -- abrupt; curt -- "No, it's the same system. Sales are up ... no line ... haven't heard any negative feedback from anyone else ... it's the same system." True -- there was no line. Implication was that customers had been quickly served. Wonder if customers had truly been quickly served or if there just weren't many customers *to* serve. Curiously, she didn't ask what I meant ... what my feedback would have been. Though I have no way of knowing, I'll bet my favorite socks I was talking to the new manager. I just checked the Mod website. Interesting to see: "We're looking for smart, savvy leaders who aren't afraid to have a little fun and let their personalities shine." - and - "MOD's always looking for people who want to work in a fun, fast-paced environment." You'd never guess *that* if you walked into the Mod on Cedar Hills Blvd. in Beaverton, OR now. What counts there? Sales and speed, apparently. As for Their Crew? Don't know how they could be more clear -- their interest seems to stop at 'sales and speed.' Why else would they complicate an efficient, streamlined system and leave the Crew Members to 'deal with it' while Customers watch? And, Customers? Be clear -- Online Customers are valued more than in-house Customers. They go to the front of the line. Probably related to the 'speed' factor -- it's much faster to pull an online order from the printer than it is to ask a Customer (face to face) what they'd like to have on their pizza. Happily there are lots of great dining options in the Portland Metro area. Still, it's sad to see a unique and fun Portland restaurant disappear into a faceless corporate machine ... where people -- Employees and Customers alike -- matter only in terms of the numbers they represent. read more

I went into MOD for the first time this last weekend. My pizza was only ok. The first time around, they burned it; not a little wood-fired char, either, but totally burned and inedible. So I asked the cashier if I could get a new one, which I did get, but she didn't ask me why and given her eye-roll when I asked for it, I assume she didn't care. I got my new pizza, but it didn't have the same toppings on it as I ordered the first time. When I brought this to her attention, she said "so you want ANOTHER pizza?" I explained that she could just refund my money and I would leave, and she reluctantly agreed to remake my pizza again. When I finally got the right pizza cooked correctly, it was fine. Not great, just ok. The toppings tasted bland (the pepperoni was oddly seasoned) and the crust had no character. Originally, this would have been a 2-star review. The problem is this: the day after MOD, I visited one of their competitors that JUST opened. There was a line out the door because they were giving away free pizza as some sort of promotion. While waiting in line outside, a small group of MOD employees came up and placed MOD stickers on this other restaurants' building and outside garbage cans, while giggling like naughty children and high-fiving each other. If business is so bad at MOD that they have to resort to trash-can advertising at their competitor's location, then that tells me everything I need to know about what kind of operation they're running. When we walked in the door, the staff shouted out to welcome us. This restaurant offers thin crust pizzas with all the toppings you want for $7.17. My wife and I split the Mad Dog Pizza (pepperoni, sausage and meatballs), which was cooked in a wood fired oven, giving it a unique flavor and crispiness that conveyor ovens don't. The crust was crispy, but not burnt (my compliments to the man cooking our pizza) and overall the pizza was very good. I was most pleased that we were able to find a clean table with no effort at all (dirty tables are my #1 pet peeve). We really enjoyed the holiday music playing. Overall great food and beer at a great price with an energetic happy staff. This place was easily the highlight of our holiday shopping experience. I give MOD Pizza my highest recommendation and sincere thanks for a great evening! read more

I love this place ... I'm there once a week... Great Pizza and the people there are wonderful.... except tonight ... The people were working extremely hard and were great... however new manger decide to change the way they take online orders and slowed the entire line down. Normally even with a line it take me 10 mins . Tonight it took 45 mins.... yes I timed it. I saw at least 12 people leave. Some people got frustrated in line and used their phones to place their orders and got served before the people in front of them who were waiting in line. People in line were not pleased. The manger, who decided to take the night off and leave this mess to the workers needs to fix it. Also ... NO tomato slices. read more

MOD pizza is definitely a departure from the traditional pizza. I think it's good in some ways but it misses the mark of what's essential in a classic pizza. First of all I didn't like the cracker like crust. Some parts were burnt and just too crispy. The thing that bothered me the most was when I noticed that the person who was making my pizza seemed to be hesitant to me asking for more than four or so ingredients, as he kept asking me some weirdly phrased questions that sounded like he wasn't happy with adding more ingredients. Oh dear, where should I start? I came here with my husband for lunch yesterday, the table we sat at was sooo sticky, I asked them to clean it politely, they said "ok we will in a second" they never showed up, so we moved to a different table. I went into the bathroom and I found what looked like mouse droppings in a corner where i set my purse down. I was disgusted, but hey sometimes mice just get in! When we got our pizza it was slightly over cooked and soggy. I was disappointed because I wanted to like this place! Oh well, maybe it was just a bad day? This place is amazing! They have amazing menu pies, of which my husband had had the Calexico. I had a bite and loved it. I built my own pizza, which is the same price, by the way. The staff were all in good spirits and laughing with us as we made our pizzas. They made the order process not so daunting with so many toppings to choose from. They also suggested the Marionberry lemonade. To die for. I had 3 cups! ha ha. Just the vibe and service of this place is what will definitely have us going back for more. I needed 18 delicious pizzas by 11:30 last Saturday. I arrived at Mod at 11:23 to find the preorder not yet started. I then witnessed the best hustle I have seen in years and I was out the door by 11:36 with all hot delicious pizzas and home by 12 and the party for 43 people. Great food for the value! My son and I loved the flexible topping options and no additional costs for toppings, no matter how many you want to add. The pizza crust was super tasty, thin, and crispy - and the wood-fired pizza oven made for great texture. The pizza size was perfect - the "mini mod" for my 6 year old, and the regular size for me. Omg so I decided to come back here after eating blaze pizza. BIG MISTAKE. Crust was burnt, bland, chewy and you could tell it was not freshly made like Blaze pizzas dough!
