Foie Gras
Crystal Y.

Love the interior and ambiance but the service was a bit lacking, forgetting to place some of the things we ordered and feeling like we received very slow attention. I enjoyed all the dishes but the steak for the steak frites was overcooked and not really a quality piece of meat. Everything else was good, in particular the appetizers. We got the foie gras and garlic snails which were delicious. I recommend the side of truffle mayo to eat with your fries!

Steak frites

The place is lively and loud , but still able to have a convo. The music is lovely, we purposely booked our seating around the time live jazz is on. We had two sets of the two course deal, with snails and tuna tartare to start and steak frites and cod as mains. We also ordered à la carte, the lamb chop and then for dessert, the Palais Royale. I would say the prix fix menu items are just ok. The lamb chops were a bit undersalted but otherwise good. The dessert was good if you like chocolate and hazelnut. This is the second time here, the last time we still remember we had the duck confit that was really yummy. This time around the food was not as impressive but overall we enjoyed our time there .

This was such a special meal for me and my family during our first visit to Old Montreal We stopped in for an early dinner and from the moment we walked in, we knew it was going to be good. Our server Christian was awesome...so attentive, welcoming and kind. The space was so beautiful. We were sat in the more quiet part of the restaurant which we enjoyed. The areas that have live music were more busy and had a heightened energy. The stand out dishes were the nicoise salad and seasonal apple tart. Definitely will be coming back when we return to Montreal

We stopped by Modavie for lunch, and the space was quiet. The service was good and the tartare with bone marrow was actually quite nice, and flavourful without being too heavy. Unfortunately, that's where the meal peaked for us. The rest of the dishes didn't really hit the mark. The duck confit, in particular, was underwhelming. It was greasy with a strong duck smell that lingered. It just didn't have the balance you'd expect from a good confit. Overall, it wasn't a bad experience, but nothing that would make me want to come back. Maybe the dinner service with live music has a different vibe, but lunch didn't leave a strong impression.

Speechless. It was phenominal! They serve French cuisine, like many in Montreal. I started with the Escargot (garlic snails). The Montreal version comes baked with a local cheese on top! It is to die for...the butter and garlic might cause a heart attack, but your last moments on earth will be heavenly! I love duck confit, so had to order and was not disappointed. Fall of the bone tender. The sauce was loaded with umami. The spinach and baby potatoes on the side were perfect match. I paired with glass of Bordeaux (only one in menu by the glass) and it paired very nicely. After dinner I enjoyed a glass of Sauternes. It wasn't on menu but after asking they admitted they had some. The sweet wine was perfect ending. They have live jazz music starting at 7pm. I couldn't get reservations, so I came early before the music. It would be truly magical to dine with live jazz. It just requires scheduling in advance. UPDATE: I ended up staying for music and ordered cheesecake (topped with blackberry puree). Cheesecake was super sense and house made puree was decadent. The music this night was more blues than jazz, which was great because I live the blues!

Our newest fav in Old Montreal. The service was impeccable. Thank you George. Off the charts! Live music! From specials to wine to creme brulee not a bad bite. Must gets- beef tartare and escargot au gratin.

Modavie is an absolute 10/10 date spot if you're simply visiting Montreal or live around the area. The ambiance and the live music was a 10/10. But the highlight of the meal, was our server's demeanor and the profiterole we ordered at the end. Special mention to the mushroom risotto and the sweetbread appetizer. Yum. The lamb chops were cooked great and almost perfect, if it weren't for the fat cap that was proportionately overwhelming compared to the amount of meat on it. Some people are into that. Us, not so much. All in all, a great finale meal of the trip, with a very memorable dessert and server!

There's a lot of great food and great music in Montreal. Modavie has both. Upon our hotel's concierge recommendation, we went to listen to some jazz and have some good food at Modavie, and were blown out of the water. We didn't think we needed reservations for a Monday night but we got there and it was packed. They made space for us at the bar and we ordered. The band was amazing and we were told there's a larger room upstairs with a different band. Now for the food: spectacular all around. We ordered poutine with lamb, the chicken and the salmon. I expected it to be good because everything in Montreal up to now had been great, and for a first time poutine taster, I was a bit apprehensive but OMG was it insane good! The fries were cooked to perfection, the sauce was like no gravy I've ever tasted before and the lamb melted in your mouth faster than the cheese curds. For my first time, it feels like all downhill from there. How can we top it?! With delicious salmon and chicken dancing on the palate. All that while listening to the most angelic sounds coming from the vocalist of the band made our experience the very best of Montreal. Modavie is now on my must-do list. I will definite be back.

My favorite restaurant that I visited while in Montreal! We were promptly seated upon arrival and settled in for a wonderful meal. Our server was knowledgeable and helped guide us through what to order while being very realistic and honest on portion sizes and how many apps our table needed (always appreciate not being over sold!) Each app and dinner was better than the last. My personal favorite was the poutine with lamb (so tender and flavorful) and the duck confit. The French bread basket for the table was INCREDIBLE - our table could have made meals off that alone! The only "lacking" part was the dessert. The creme brûlée was fine, but was not living up to the expectations of all dishes leading into dessert. Bonus that they have live music - a great touch and not too loud where you can't talk with your table! Highly recommend making a stop at Modavie next time in Old Montreal.

A great option for a French dinner after a stroll around the beautiful streets of Old Montreal. We arrived a little after 5pm and there was no wait for a table. Service was very pleasant but a bit inattentive since water refills were sparse throughout our meal. We were seated at a corner table and got a wonderful view of the cobblestone streets outside. The food: Loved: - Complimentary bread and butter- Served fresh right out of the oven! - Lamb chops- Cooked a perfect medium rare. Very juicy and flavorful. - Mussels and fries Ok: - Scallop grenobloise- The texture of the scallops and the flavor of the sauce was good but it was $25 for 3 very tiny pieces of scallop. You might as well order another main at this price point. - Garlic snails- I think I've only had escargot once before and honestly forgot what they taste like but the ones here were very small and pretty much disintegrated once I started chewing on them so ended up not really tasting like anything. There's an option to add cheese and usually adding cheese to anything makes it taste better but not in this case. The cheese was very strong and completely overpowered the flavor of the snails. If I were to come back I'll probably sub the scallops and snails for duck confit and salmon filet since we saw other tables order these and they looked delicious. But overall, quite an enjoyable dinner in a picturesque part of town. Note: I saw a review that said that there's a requirement for each member in your party to order a main dish and this was confirmed when I contacted them prior to our visit. However, when we were seated I asked them again and our server said that there is no such requirement. It's perfectly fine to share mains.

Live music, intimate dining and rustic decor in the heart of old port, montreal!!!what a memorable experience to spend a spring evening. The service is exceptionally good, our server Caroline was friendly, spoke English well and very accommodating. Her recommendations were apt. Go with their recommendations. She was very thorough with us and careful of little details. It was good to exchange pleasantries with her. Food: There is a decent selection of wine, alcohol, cocktails and beer. I went with a mocktail which a loved! Quite refreshing and thirst quenching. We chose the 3 course menu option and I went with beet salad, and mushroom risotto for my mains. Both were good but the risotto was one of the best I have ever had. Enriched with mushrooms and cheese , topped with toasted pine-nuts, served with a side basket of warm bread & butter , it was certainly the most delicious one. Portions were generous. The dessert was delicious and big. But 3 of us shared 2 of those chocolate layers cakes. The ambiance is very European and you can spend your evening enjoying music and chat with loved ones.

Enjoyed a nice meal in Montreal at Modavie restaurant. They have live music and a cool atmosphere. I had lamb chops with vegetables which was excellent. Creme brule dessert also was delicious. I can't recall the red wine we ordered but they have a good selection. Nice meal after all.

Foie gras and salmon tartare

Welcome to a beautiful building with jazz flowing through transporting you to another time and place. Be seated and attended to by the kind and knowledgeable staff. Start with apps! Don't pass up on the foie gras. Pair with a salmon tartare for an impressive contrast. The table voted my lamb pasta best entree of the table. Rack of lamb was a close second, though the crust wasn't quite as crispy as desired. The wine recommendation paired perfectly with the rich flavors. A must stop in Montreal!

Our waitresses recommendations were fire. We enjoyed: Complementary bread: it was soft on inside and appropriately crunchy but not overly so on the outside. Plus two huge pieces cut into 4 pieces individually. Beef tartare: at 20 cad it was a little pricy for how much you got but the taste was great and I'm a fan of comte cheese. Plus it didn't have capers which imo overwhelms tartares. Duck with carrot: as a Chinese person I've had my share of duck but this might be the best duck I've ever had in my life. Then the leg had the perfect crispy fatty skin to meat ratio. Yum yum this is a can't miss dish here Burger: husband got this. I took a bite. It had a nice smoke to it and was perfectly medium rare. BEST "BYOB" FRENCH BISTRO DURING RECENT TRIP…read more This is the best dining experience in our recent Montreal trip. I'm glad we made reservation since the place was quite packed when we arrived. To be honest, our first impression wasn't too great. We were seated in their main indoor dining area which was a bit too warm. We asked if we can be moved to their fully covered / heated patio area, but unfortunately the restaurant was full. Fast forward 15 minutes, we have placed our order and were enjoying our bottle of wine and a basket of bread. Our server came over and offered to move us to the patio area since a table had opened up. We were pleasantly surprised because (1) we didn't ask again and (2) most restaurants wouldn't change tables once customers started eating/drinking. The restaurant setting is unpretentious with a casual and cozy vibes. The staff are so friendly that we feel like having a family dinner! They offer a pre-fixe menu in which we thoroughly enjoyed! For appetizers, the escargot dish gave us a pleasant surprise. They wrapped the escargots and blue cheese sauce in a thin crispy crust! It's hard to describe, but it's sort of like having an escargot "crepe"! The few main courses we chose were excellent, and the rack of lamb was probably our favorite - tender, juicy, and perfectly cooked. As for dessert, their creme brulee was one of the best I've had - creamy custard topped with a perfect, crisp caramel top.
