I ordered online to pick up. My order was ready when I arrived. When I came in, the bartender ran outside to take a phone call, then handed me my order stating he assumed I was the one who called in my order. (??) I ordered the Spartan sandwich. I really wanted to like it because it sounded good on the menu, but I just did not enjoy it. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing. The steak meat was very salty (even for me) and incredibly greasy. I could not pick the sandwich up to eat it, I had to use a knife and fork. The gyro meat was just in huge chunks. Nothing seemed like it was cooked, but had a reheated texture to it. I thought it would be fresh tomatoes on the sandwich, but they seemed to be stewed or previously canned maybe? The tzatziki was good, but the rest did not deliver for me, especially when there's so many other good sandwich shops nearby. Not sure I would come back here.

Great no nonsense place to get drinks and some really great sandwiches, at a reasonable price too! Their sandwiches all looked amazing, with their egg sandwich with mozzarella sticks being unholy and delicious. Sadly they don't come with fries, but I absolutely think they're worth getting as a side, they were the best kind of classic crinkle cut.

Can I say the brunch food here...top notch! Granted all the food at Modern Cafe is excellent but the brunch food, chefs kiss. Flavorful, perfect temperature and great presentation.

First time here, have driven past it many, many times. Went to grab a quick bite before a concert. Menu is fairly decent size. Have some interesting hot dog and burger options. Surprisingly have numerous Greek inspired dishes. Decent bar list. The bar itself was nearly full when we arrived. Seemed like a local hangout for folks after work. Some were eating and grabbing beer and others were having a liquid dinner. I ordered a Greek cheesesteak which sounded interesting. I asked the balsamic type dressing on the side as it wasn't something that made sense in my palate to have on the sandwich. The sandwich wasn't bad, I kind of liked it. My wife ordered a Rachel. She wasn't as thrilled about her sandwich. Sandwiches don't come with any side. When doing some online research about the place before arriving I saw numerous folks comment to make sure to get the onion rings. So we did. We slit the rings. They were good, not amazing as some past reviews made them out to be. The serving size wasn't large for the price. The place has an old school vibe inside. The service was decent. I'd say it's a 3.5 rating from me.

If you're looking for a local, cozy spot, this is your place! With a menu of interesting wraps (including a gluten free wrap!) with flavorful options to delight the picky to the tricky to please plus a list of interesting apps. Our server was kind and thoughtful - and everyone seemed to know everybody here! A community vibe you have to see to understand. I'm excited to return and try the stuffed grape leaves...!

This was my first time trying Modern Cafe and I LOVED it! It was a super yummy burger and I loved the fries as well! It was ready within 15 mins and super quick to pickup. It was also my first time going inside the restaurant and I thought it's a cute decent sized bar! Much bigger than I thought honestly. I loved it and will definitely order again!

I can't believe I've never left a review for Modern Cafe, but I finally took a photo of my food so here we are. I've been going to modern for years now as a neighborhood resident. It's a great classic dive bar if you just want some drinks and a good time, but it's also an excellent choice for a casual lunch or dinner. Some of my favorites include: the Mediterranean dip, gyro salad, turkey Rachel, and their fabulous crinkle fries. They recently added hotdogs to the menu and they are to die for. I just tried the Greek dog which features Greek chili, mustard and onion. Modern cafe also has a great happy hour each day and some specials during the week. My favorite is 1/2 off bottles of wine on wine Wednesday. You can't beat it.

    Spicy Sicilian
    Spencer S.

Ordered a spicy Sicilian for takeout during covid. The wait was only 10 minutes, which was great because we were out walking the neighborhood. I'm a sucker for Italian meats and spicy peppers. (Though I don't enjoy a ton of heat, and this was not so spicy that it was unenjoyable by any means). The sandwich was grilled to perfection, juicy, flavorful and delicious. The establishment was clean and they did their best to gingerly hand the food as well as my credit card back with as little touching as possible. I'd love to come back and try more sandwiches sometime. They all look very good!

BEST PITTSBURGH WING…read more We were absolutely not expecting this and still can't believe it. We didn't have major expectations but hoped it would be at least a top 5 wing and average meal. It was beyond that The French onion soup we saw online and everyone seemed to enjoy that. We're whores for it so had to get. I like mine a tad bit salty which this was and PACKED with onion chunks and breaded leeks on top. It was impossible to get a spoon fully without any inclusions. My new favorite The Tavern Burger. I'm coming fresh off 9 years without 5 Guys (elite) and this rocked me harder than that. This isn't a stupid smash burger. We got a juicy COOKED PERFECT RARE 8oz patty, topped with sautéed onions, and bacon that isn't crisped to smithereens. I like my bacon medium rare and that's exactly what I got. Then covered in one of the craziest sauces I have ever had, their gorgonzola cream. I could drink that by the gallon The wings.... I have never had a wing itself cooked more perfect in my life. The smoke and meatiness on them was so nailed that I could get 2 dozen plain and still have the same reaction. We got the Buffalo Garlic and Dry Cajun Ranch. These wings don't need drenched in sauce by any means or it would honestly ruin it. The buffalo doesn't ned to be creamy either. Perfect amount of sauce to cheese ration. The dry cajun ranch was a fucking knockout. For how great the wing is I would love to see more dry season options with them Cam got a Tavern Dip. I hate dips. I loved the shaved ribeye on it and horseradish, but I have never been an Au Jus man. Would 100000% eat it without the au jus Then the fries. Always team psoriasis through and through. Not sure if I'm coming off the Five Guys high but their cajun boardwalk style are even better. Get some spicy honey aioli to dip them in. Truly just shocked at how amazing this place is. Right over the bridge and cannot recommend enough going here before a game and walking over. Great spot right before, after and during sports. Very high Pittsburgh atmosphere going on I will be back so many times and absolutely worth going Downtown for

Unfortunately that's were the good ends. First and always foremost, how was the food? An absolutely mess. Impossible to enjoy bc the sandwich falls apart immediately, simply can not pick up without losing everything inside, and greasy as all get out. I should have expected this to an extent, but a nearly $20 grilled cheese at a place that "specializes" in them, I would hope could do better than this. Service was very, very slow despite many open seats. The part that probably sent it over the top was the plate runner constantly spilling the tomato soups everytime they brought out someone's meal. Mine dripped all of the ground as he sat it down, my wife's got on her tray so the bread was just mushy on the bottom, and we saw it constantly as he walked by delivering others. Cool idea, cool location, but the rest was just bad.

We also asked the host if someone could help us, but were told she couldn't because she wasn't a server and that our server would eventually get to us. After waiting that long with no service, my wife and I decided to leave. We were genuinely excited to eat here, so it was disappointing to walk out without even getting the opportunity to try the food. City Works Pittsburgh -- Sports, Salmon & Sinfully Good Cheese Curds…read moreVisited: Wednesday, July 29, 2026 4.5/5 Seven hungry road-weary hooligans rolled into City Works Pittsburgh around 6 p.m. on a Wednesday looking for three basic human necessities: food, alcohol and enough televisions to ensure nobody was ever forced into sustained eye contact. Mission accomplished. The place has a modern, spacious, casually polished feel--comfortable without being stuffy, energetic without sounding like someone dropped a silverware drawer down a flight of stairs. There are TVs seemingly everywhere, which makes City Works an excellent headquarters for sports fans, large groups, wandering degenerates, or seven friends who simply need a civilized staging area before whatever questionable decisions occur later in the evening. We initially sat in a booth before realizing that seven grown adults plus drinks, menus, appetizers and our collective egos required substantially more acreage. Our server--a very cute, friendly young lady--handled our relocation request without even the faintest visible urge to poison us. She was attentive, pleasant and took excellent care of the table throughout dinner. Food-wise, City Works did exactly what I wanted it to do. My main dish was the blackened grilled salmon salad, and this thing was no sad little punishment salad designed for somebody who lost a bet. It was a substantial bowl of greens, vegetables, egg, cheese and a beautifully seasoned piece of salmon on top. Fresh, filling, colorful and flavorful enough that I could temporarily pretend I was making responsible nutritional decisions. Then we ordered the fried stuff. The fried pickles were superb--crispy, salty, tangy little discs of comfort-food righteousness begging to be dragged through dipping sauce. And the deep-fried cheese curds? Dear God. Warm little golden nuggets of dairy sin. Crispy outside, molten cheesy joy inside. Somewhere a cardiologist felt a mysterious disturbance in the Force, and I regret absolutely nothing. The wings circulating around the table looked properly sauced and substantial as well, and there was enough food flying around that our table began looking less like dinner and more like negotiations at the United Nations of Cholesterol. What I especially liked about City Works was the balance. It's social and lively but not obnoxiously loud. You can watch a game, drink a beer, eat something substantial and actually hear the human sitting across from you without communicating through semaphore. For a group gathering, I think this place absolutely nails it: plenty of room, relaxed atmosphere, lots of TVs, good drinks, genuinely enjoyable food and service that comfortably handled seven traveling idiots changing tables and descending upon appetizers like raccoons behind a Wisconsin supper club. Strong recommendation. City Works was exactly what we needed that evening--a comfortable Pittsburgh gathering spot where the salmon lets you pretend you're healthy and the cheese curds immediately expose you as a liar.

It took another ten minutes before I was able to get a refill, and she never asked again for the rest of the time we were there. The people sitting beside us arrived later and ordered similar food to us, and they somehow received their food quite some time before ours came out. I am almost certain the bartender forgot to put in our order. Halfway through our meal (which was okay at best), someone turned the music up so loud that we couldn't hear each other speak.
