I'm lucky that my work gives me a flexible spending account for medical purchases. In previous years, I've used it to buy cold medicine, band-aides, etc. but what with the new FDA regulations, I haven't made much use of it. As the end of October loomed closer, I decided I better see how much I had left to spend and was surprised to see I still had a significant amount. What to do... buy new glasses! I had been to Modern Eye last year and had a great experience. It's close to my office and staff is always very friendly. I couldn't find my prescription so I gave the store a call and Will, the manager, assured me it was no problem, they still had it on file. Great! I walked over today on my lunch break and was greeted with a "Nice to see you again!" from Bill, who I recognized as having been the one to help me choose frames previously. He asked me what I was looking for (shape, color preference) and then what price range I wanted to be in. He proceeded to pull out a variety of frames for me to try on and was honest about what looked good and what didn't. I spotted one pair on my own which I loved and Bill got them out for me, saying he knew I'd like them but they were above what I wanted to spend so that's why he didn't initially show them to me. Eventually, I narrowed it down two: the splurge and another great pair that had the uniqueness I was looking for but was within my price range. I was impressed that Bill didn't try to sway me towards the expensive ones. He pointed out the pros and cons of each and gave me time to think about it. Still undecided, he grabbed the other guys working there and asked them to watch my fashion show. Unanimously, the liked more moderately priced ones better. Sold! Bill wrote up my order and saw, on his notes from my last time there, our Temple connection. We talked about both being English majors and he ended up knocking a bit more off the price, in addition to giving me a discount for an online coupon (which I didn't even know existed). I left feeling great about my purchase. The staff of Modern Eye truly want you to be happy with and look good in your glasses and aren't merely concerned with making a big sale. I'm looking forward to picking up my glasses next week and will certainly be coming back again in the future. read more

I love eye glasses and MODERN EYE~ The first time I went in I was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere, collection of glasses and the excellent service they provided. Bil (who is now a Facebook friend of mine, a testament to an amazing sales person) helped me select glasses that suit my personality, needs and something that would highlight my features. I ended up selecting 2 pairs one for work one for casual and till this day I love them both. As an example, I accidentally left them at a hotel and drove back 20 miles to get them. Since my first experience, I have gone into say hello (secretly to check out the glasses) and also to adjust my glasses. All the times after purchase I have been warmly welcomed and remembered. The staff is wonderful. They are not pushy and don't mind if you bother them with selecting a pair. Even if you don't walk out with a pair you will leave wondering why you didn't purchase and come back for sure. The prices can be high but the service during and after is super and is certainly worth giving a shot. I am considering a 3rd pair...you see I'm addicted thanks to them. read more

I have gotten two pairs of glasses at Modern Eye. All of my visits there are really pleasant. The first time I went, I was there for hours, trying on frames and interacting with the staff. I felt like they were my buddies, nodding approvingly at the glasses they liked and being honest when I tried frames that didn't work. I really anticipate going to visit, so much so that I find it disappointing my vision plan doesn't include more than on eye exam per year. I would and have recommended Modern Eye to friends. I got some great new glasses here. Most of the selection ranges from hipster-chic to bauhaus-uber-ja. I was ready for a change and they were ready to give it to me! Salespeople were all really friendly and funny--they didn't give me the hard sell, but did push me to try on styles I might not normally have considered. I'm glad I did. On the way home, one stranger stopped me to tell me she liked my frames! If that's not positive reinforcement, I don't know what is. They take insurance and my glasses ended up being pretty cheap (under 100 bucks including lenses, with insurance). Their styles aren't as outrageously priced as I thought they would be. The year is almost over - I have to use up the rest of my FSA account or lose it!! I thought I'd stop by on a Friday afternoon to pick out some frames. At least 10 other people had the same idea at the same time. The place was packed! I was that annoying customer who walked in needing to find a pair of glasses ASAP and one that fit my budget - to use the rest of my flexible spending account money, which was well below what the 'average" price of glasses there cost. The customer service was excellent! The man helping me was very efficient, stylish, and friendly. He helped me choose a pair of glasses that fit my style and my small budget! I was in and out of there even faster than I thought I would be. I would recommend this place to anyone. I arrived on time for my appointment but the doctor was running 30-40 minutes late. I get it, those things happen but it would be nice to get a call so I can wait in the comfort of my own home instead of their small waiting room. Next I called in to ask them to fill out a form on 01/05. I faxed it over as they requested and then I never heard back. I followed up again on 01/16 and asked for the form to be filled out again. Still, nothing. Then I follow up again on 01/17 inquiring about the form. Again I hear nothing. read more

Hands down the best frame selection I could find in the city. I've gotten nothing but compliments from everyone, including friends and some random guy on the train who muttered: "Those are nice frames" to someone else. As others have mentioned, their wares are definitely pricey. But why go cheap on the way you present yourself to the world on a daily basis? The staff were really friendly, and it didn't hurt that my favorite MGMT song was playing in the background during my first visit. I'd recommend nowhere else. read more

If you're looking for unique glasses, this is the place to go. Great brand selection that you won't find at your typical chain eyeglass shop. If you want contacts though, LOOK NO FURTHER AND GET YOURSELF HERE!!! I resisted contacts for the longest time because of anxiety over touching my eyes and ruining my vision. The staff there was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and made getting the hang of contacts a breeze. Dr. Chris calmed me down, explained everything and multiple people there helped me out with insertion/removal of the lenses. By the time i left i felt like a pro. Even my boyfriend commented on how fast i had learned; he said when he started (many years ago in NYC), it took him a few weeks to get the hang of it! Everyone there went above and beyond for me, trying out a few different types of lenses (I apparently have freakishly dry eyes so it took a few tries) and giving a list of products to try AND the ones to avoid (re-wetting drops specifically for lens care) and explaining the difference between various eye drops. As for eye care, again, they know their stuff! Having a family history of glaucoma, I have been to a few specialists associated with research hospitals, but they do not do contact lens fittings. This office had what appeared to be the same machines used at the MD's office. And finally, everyone was just so cool, and people seemed genuinely excited to be there: a rarity these days! I seriously cannot recommend this place enough! read more

If you're the type who needs an alarm clock with extra large numbers and have to put your glasses right by your bed just in case you need to get up in the middle of the night, then this is your place. The staff is super friendly and they'll give you their honest opinion when your pupils are dilated and you're trying to pick out a pair of new glasses. I can call and order contacts and they'll usually arrive within a day or two. They give a thorough exam and have the coolest specs in the city. They don't accept all insurances, so be sure to double check before you hit them up. Even if they don't accept your insurance, they still give you a discount. Going to the eye doctor has never been so exciting! read more

I was so disappointed to find that, six years after PRK eye surgery, my eyes were changing again. I am in school, and suddenly found it quite difficult to see the white board at the front of the classroom...damn. So I went to Modern Eye. I made an appointment with the very friendly and matter-of-fact optometrist, who informed me that, apparently, law school ruins your eyes. I wish I had known that before I enrolled. He also gave me some tips on how to try and keep them from getting worse with time. After my appointment, I went downstairs and tried on just about every pair of frames in the store that were vaguely cat-eyed or an interesting color. The woman helping me made her own suggestions, found me alternate colors of the frames I liked, and stayed with me throughout the process, while other customers made their selections and left. She told me when a pair of frames was too wide, so the lenses wouldn't be well-positioned. She was patient while I narrowed it down to about a dozen frames, then 5, then 3, then asked for another color of frame I had already rejected, etc etc until I figured out what I wanted. I certainly appreciated that. However, I think she just told me that every frame that was the right size looked good, even though I could plainly see that some did not. That irked me a little, as it is hard to pick a style when you can't see very well. She also kept telling me about how they were going to go to a show soon, and would have so many new frames in in a few weeks if I wanted to wait, which was annoying because clearly I was shopping for glasses on that day. I kept saying "well, that's fine, but I can't see anything now" and she just kept telling me about all the new styles they would have in the future. I am not interested in theoretical frames that you can't sell me yet. I am interested in correcting my vision. In the end I got a pair of frames I loved, and actually the price was quite reasonable. They have frames there that, themselves, were priced at several hundreds of dollars, so your tab could be very high, but the frames I found were $140, really not bad for looking so good. It's also worth it to visit their website ahead of time and get the 50% off lenses coupon. A real deal right there. read more

I wear glasses, but have a very hard face to fit. I tried on 25+ frames before settling on a pair that seemed to fit, but after a few weeks of wearing (and many trips back to Modern Eye to have them readjusted), they were still not sitting right. (This was through no fault of Modern Eye-- the glasses just weren't perfect, and I'm super persnickety/ sensitive about fit). The folks at Modern Eye worked with me to get a new pair of frames that fit perfectly, and no one ever acted grumbly towards me for literally visiting the office 10+ times to ask for readjustments, etc. I do not know that I could have been that friendly and patient with a bothersome customer. Also, in general, they have a very well-curated collection of frames. I was on some sort of a budget, and they happily showed me a number of frames in my price range. They also had a good mix of trendy/younger frames, quirky/older frames, and simple/unobtrusive frames. Seems to be something for everyone. I had an eye exam with the doctor, and though I don't have particularly difficult eyes and am not the harshest judge of these things, the exam was thorough and friendly-- one of the better eye appointments I've had. I also visited the University City location to look at some frames when my first pair wasn't working out, and they have a different (and also great) selection, so I'd recommend visiting both locations if you're looking for exactly the right pair. read more

So one of the screws on my husband's glasses fell out. Screws fall out all the time, right? The world's an imperfect place. Luckily, we stumbled upon this little hipster boutique, which has an awesome Brooklyn vibe, despite the Philly locale. The guy who helped us was wearing Buddy Holly glasses and had a witty retort for pretty much everything we said. Us: What's upstairs? Him: Narnia Us: (double smirks) Him. Not that Narnia. I had 3 years of great, informative, thorough eye exams with Dr. Anastasiou at the Center City location. Then I moved to NYC and opted to go to an optometrist closer to my new home - and it was a huge disappointment. Modern Eye is simply one of the best eye and eyeglass retail experiences I've ever had. Dr. Anastasiou is extremely helpful, especially when fitting my contacts and as someone else mentioned he tells you a lot about the health of your eyes. I also love the store retail staff. They are knowledgeable, friendly and funny. Over the years, they've helped me pick out 3 terrific pairs of eyeglasses. I should mention that after the lousy exam I had up here, I decided to pop into Modern Eye on a Philly visit and use my prescription for a new pair of glasses there. Will was terrific and even mailed me the finished product. I constantly get stopped and asked about these last pair of frames. Walking into another store to help a friend pick out sunglasses, I had immediate cred because the frames are pretty awesome and the brand is highly respected. Pricier than the cheaper options out there. Perhaps. But the staff work your insurance and explain your options. The frames they sell are quality too. I think it's worth it as I wear my glasses a lot. So, if you're fortunate enough to live in Philly and need your eyes examined, as well as need new eyeglasses or a contact fitting - go here. These people are professionals and genuinely good at what they do. I just wish more places were like Modern Eye. read more

I can't say enough great things about this place, and I wish I'd found it sooner. I came here on a recommendation from a colleague whose frames were awesome. I'd gotten my eye exam a few months prior elsewhere and took my Rx to Modern Eye on 13th Street. I tried on about 20 different pairs of glasses, and settled on a gorgeous frame from Claire Goldsmith. Jess, who attended me, said it'd be about 10-14 days until I received my new spectacles. I let her know I'd be going away on vacation and she made sure that my glasses were ready before leaving. Got my new glasses, and the prescription needed to be corrected. Dropped them off to Josh, and they were ready in just 2 days! I picked them up the night before I left for vacation. From day one, I've had a wonderful experience. Their customer service is beyond superb! They really go out of their way to ensure the customer is happy, which is why when it's time to get new spectacles, I'll be heading back to ME. read more

Personally, I need to feel like the people fitting me for frames aren't 100 years old, concerned about their profit margins, or which supplier their trying to push. I need a professional opinion that says, "sir, yes I know you like the perfect circle John Lennon frames, but your head is bulbous and you look rediculous." For someone that went in alone, in a rush, I would put on a pair, look up at them, and the quick "yes/no/put it to the side" response was perfect and spot on. I'd resisted getting new glasses for WAY too long. This is a habit of mine because I've hated the "way too many choices" problem of getting glasses in the past. To be clear how long I waited, my pair had long screws sticking out the sides and were constantly crooked, and they had been that way for more than a year. My girlfriend had finally said "Enough!" and so the search for new frames began. Enter Modern Eye... Walking in there was a blast. Will (manager?/owner?) made choosing new frames easy and fun. He's totally funny and somehow knew exactly what I wanted. I didn't even know what I wanted. The experience was fast, and fun, and Will is not the only talented, cool person there. I love Kate, Dale and Dr. Kris (and sometimes the other doc that's really tall does my exam too but I forget his name!) I go here because they have quality stylish frames and for their interesting, wonderful team of staff. My insurance doesn't cover all of my needs here but I would rather go here than any other place because I know I'm not going to get ripped off with the glasses and the doc is honest. He even supported lasik for me if that's what I wanted to do. It's been 4 years now and I still get compliments on my two pairs of glasses I bought from Modern Eye. Anyhow, go here. I was very, very skeptical about getting my contact done at any other place except for my ophthalmologist in NJ. However, I am at school in Philly and couldn't go back and forth for so many trips to get my new contacts fitted. After looking and asking around I was referred to Modern Eye. I can't speak for the glasses, except that they are pretty pricey. I also cannot speak for any of the employees except for Brian Machamer. Dr. Brian Machamer dealt with me for about a month straight. I needed gas permeable contacts made because my eyes needed the added oxygen that GP lenses allow for. At the first appt, I was given a basic eye exam and they "mapped out" my eyeball. within a week I was handed a pair of contacts and told to be patient and not to hesitate to call with any questions. I took 4 or 5 remakes until the contacts came out absolutely perfect. I've never seen better. At my yearly check up, my ophthalmologist said the new contact fit perfect. If you need semi-hard gas permeable lens, definitely get checked by Dr Brian. read more

I wandered in off the streets window shopping and got hooked. Their selection of frames is awesome. The staff is excellent. I agree with Jennifer N. that they'll be totally honest about how frames look on you and if they don't like them you probably shouldn't get them. Everyone is really helpful and patient. Dr. Brian did my eye exam and explained more to me about my eyes than another doctor, in a good way. When I picked up my glasses they asked me if I was ready to see the best I've ever seen and I do. I honestly didn't know other people could see that far. Plus Dr. Brian is adorable. (And there are Bills fans here. Just sayin'.) I got compliments on my glasses regularly. I have a long-standing relationship with my optometrist in south Jersey. As thrilled as I am with the service my eye doctor provides me, I thought their selection of frames was lacking. Enter Modern Eye. Entering their shop was a little daunting, at first. I've never been in an eyewear store in which everything was housed in a display case, meaning that I couldn't just pull it from the shelf to try on. But the attendant who helped me was so knowledgeable about their product lines, and so attuned to what I said about my tastes and preferences, that this concern quickly faded. I eventually chose a pair of Carter Bond frames--a departure from my usual 60s-ad man styling, but a breath of fresh air. Some notes: although their eyewear and gallery are modern, their POS system is anything but, and did require that my card authorization be called in. Not the staff's fault, for sure, but a dedicated POS solution--like the Square stand--might be a really good option here. read more

Prior to my visit Modern Eye I was an eye doctor whore; I don't think I ever went to the same one more then once and I wasn't happy with any of them. That is until I stumbled upon Modern Eye. The doctors and staff are super friendly. Their prices are high, but in my opinion - worth it. And luckily I have good insurance that is accepted there. Modern Eye is a ruler in style for eye-wear. Their location has an awesome selection of frames from all over the world. They don't carry your basic designer frames like Prada that you can easily get in a mall, but carry unique lines like Mykita, Oliver Peoples, and Oncle. Truly unique styles that you won't see every other person on the street wearing. A couple months ago I tried on some sunglasses and I wanted to see them in colors that they didn't have in stock. They offered to order 3 frames for me just to try on. Now that's customer service. I wanted to buy 2 of them but had to be fiscally practical and responsible. They offered to hold on to one of the pairs for a month so I could scramble some funds together. So I was able to get myself a sweet pair of white ones for the end of summer then in October go back for my fall pair. What great service! On a medical note, I wouldn't trust my eyes to anyone else. Dr. Bryan and Dr. Chris are extremely skilled doctors and they perform eye exams like no other eye doctor I have ever been to before. Recently my employer unfortunately changed vision care providers so I begrudgingly tried a new doctor that was under my new insurance. That was my first and last visit. I would rather pay out of pocket to go back to Modern Eye because their medical care is far superior, their service is far superior, and the selection of frames is far superior. Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Excellent customer service. I always feel welcomed when I enter their store. They are the kings and queens of cool. Thank you guys! You can't say much more than these guys are as good as it gets. They know their glasses inside out and backward and they make finding eye glasses fun! I called yesterday complaining of dry eyes (related to my pregnancy). They put together of a bunch of contact solutions and eye drops for me to try. They went above and beyond - as always. These people are fantastic. I had a horrible experience with Warby Parker, and went to Modern Eye for help. WP kept sending me lenses I couldn't see out of, and the Modern Eye folks were extremely helpful in identifying the problem and giving me the vocabulary to understand and communicate it back to Warby Parker. When Warby Parker still couldn't get it right, I broke down and brought their frames back to Modern Eye to make the lenses. They were so friendly, and so helpful, and the lenses they made me are perfect. And they gave me a discount for coming back for help a third time. Absolutely terrible experience. The sales associate tried to tell me all they carry is what is in style and if I don't like their frames then I'm out of style (but way better options, including many frames I actually liked, can be found at Trend Eye Care in Northern Liberties. Trend Eye will also treat you better for a better customer service experience). She was also incredibly condescending. They take a very limited option of vision insurance making it difficult to have your glasses covered. And finally they told me the wait for the glasses would be 1-2 weeks (Trend Eye it took just 2 days). Stay away from this place unless you want to pay more out of pocket for a severely limited frame selection and a terrible shopping and customer service experience where you get insulted and forced to wait an unnecessarily long time for your merchandise. EDIT: I'm responding to your response Chris. I'm not surprised by it since you seem to always respond with hostility to bad reviews. It's not that I don't like you. The problem is I didn't like the way your store associate treated me. I never said you were rude to your customers. I said the customer service representative was condescending and tried to tell me that your store only carries what is in style, and if I don't like any of your frames, I must be out of style. I didn't make that up; my girlfriend witnessed it too. I ran my review of your store by her since she was there and she agreed with what I said. Both she and I are not ones to try to hurt someone's business. (Just look at my other reviews) The funny thing here is your terrible customer service continues as you can't take ownership of the fact that your store associate was terrible in making me feel uncomfortable about my options and my shopping experience. You should apologize and say you'll try to remedy the situation and prevent it from happening again. I don't know if you're the store manager or just the social media associate, but either way you are proving here how terrible you are at customer service. My only regret about this review, is I can't give you 0 stars. 2nd EDIT: if you're truly sorry and taking it so seriously, then STOP writing this off as someone making a joke, or her simply rubbing me the wrong way. I know what I heard her say, and my girlfriend was there to witness it. If it was meant as a joke, it was highly inappropriate and not funny. Nobody laughed or smiled, including your associate. I appreciate your apology, but it seems you're apologizing for the wrong reasons. I'm currently by chance at another business where I am quite friendly with the staff, and showed them your response. They are as shocked as I am. At this point my only hope is that you learn to correct your behavior by the time this review is "buried" behind other better ones, so that you don't treat more customers like this. I went here for an exam and contact lens fitting and agree with the Mary Anne review from several months ago. Lots of employees standing around not doing much but looking at their computers. They also seem quite disorganized as a young woman called me the day of my appointment saying that my eye follow-up appointment was not covered by insurance and I would have to pay out of pocket. When I went to the office it turned out they misunderstood that this was a second appointment and that I wasn't to be charged. Nice enough but they need to get their act together, this is a doctors office not a Tommy Bahama store. read more

Modern Eye deserves a congratulations, I guess, for being the store that's most inspired me to make use of my Yelp account ever since I created one back in March. First review for the worst customer service at the most pretentious store I have experienced in a long, long time. I wish I remembered the name of the sales guy that "assisted" me and my brother when we visited the store (as this review is really about him) but I was too overwhelmed by the guy's unfortunate salesmanship skills to retain such information. Anyway, this guy was unprofessional from the minute we walked in. The other employees were busy with customers so me and my brother browsed the store's underwhelming selection for awhile before catching the eye of the guy standing behind the desk...let's call him Mike. He finally acknowledges us by saying, "You guys need any help? I'm really busy and have a lot of stuff to do but sure, I can help you." Should've walked out of there right then but my brother really wanted to see a pair of glasses in the display case. The entire time we are looking at frames, guy just stands there with evident disinterest and an attitude that suggested that we, being students couldn't afford anything in the store and were wasting his time. When my brother told him what sort of frame he was looking for, Mike just stood there and shrugged helplessly and sighed as though he were trying to maybe communicate in hip people code that, "you don't want anything oversized, thick rimmed, and over 400 dollars? i simply cannot help you then." Mike didn't make an effort to give any suggestions, and responded with a bored, "No," when I asked if I could see what sort of frames were on display on the shelf behind him, and then turned his attention to the other customers nearby. My brother actually had made up his mind on getting a pair of frames he'd tried on. But the general vibe of the store was so condescending, rude and unprofessional that I refused to let him give them any of his money. So we decided to bounce. My brother holds his hand out to Mike and shakes his hand, saying, "I'm gonna think about it, but thanks." Mike responds to this loudly in an accusatory tone, "Well are you gonna think about it or do you know you're not gonna get it? No need to lie." Don't know what Mike's deal is but he clearly has issues. The other employees didn't bother interjecting either but just observed from their seats. Too cool to care attitude all around. We ended up walking into a store located in the ghetto mall a few blocks down, where the sales people were chill, courteous, attentive and professional. Got the exact same Ray Ban frames my brother wanted for nearly a hundred dollars less. Modern Eye is a terrible store with a "high end" facade, with pretentious employees who try to run a business by being hipster edgy but really come off as lacking class and professionalism. who looks forward to going to the doctor? frankly i usually only go when something's broke but in the case of modern eye i am great on keeping up with my regularly scheduled appointments because i love going to see them. i could try on frames all day. the staff is totally helpful and honest with the frame selection. and i love that they will steer you away from the boring, safe frames. i have a pair from them with a lime and purple grid pattern, and i get more compliments on them than i've gotten on any other item in my entire life. people LOVE those glasses, perhaps more than i do. :) nothing painful about the eye appt, and they're extremely thorough with checking you out and making sure the prescription is right. i see bryan (doesn't even go by dr such-and-such) and i recommend to anyone that will listen to go see him. the whole experience is just comfortable and not doctory at all. one of my all-time favorite businesses in philadelphia. I had an awesome experience in this place today!! I was just walking by & stopped in to check out their glasses selection. Sooooo glad i did! Although I was wearing my glasses, they offered me a free pair of contacts if i wanted to try-on (and actually see) each pair on my face. I took them up on that offer & after about 30 minutes.... I found MY pair!! Each staff member ( all 5) were very nice and most importantly, knowledgeable!! They weeded out the glasses i thought i liked, with those that fit my face & looked good on me. Um, going to the eye doctor, fun? Yep! And any eye doctor who also plays Radiohead in the lobby gets my awesome vote. Annual check-ups are never boring at Modern Eye. I LOVE my glasses that I bought two years ago - and I've never LOVED the way I look in glasses. These guys are glasses experts. Seriously - I was one of those people who only wore glasses if I chipped a contact or something. Also - I always find the eye exam process to be extremely thorough. I have had eye problems in the past - so I'm picky about my eye doctors. Previous to Modern Eye I visited a guy on South Street who was so amazingly slack that I had to wonder, "Is this guy really an eye doctor?" (Seriously - my exam consisted of "Read the chart on the wall," "OK you're done!") Also - as a side note, about six months after I bought my beloved frames, a bar of soap fell on them as I was washing my face and they split in two. (No joke, I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it.) I called Modern Eye, and brought my frame-in-two-pieces into the shop. (It was like a funeral procession.) I was completely surprised when they said, "We can tell you take care of these, there are no scratches in the lenses - it must have been a faulty frame to break so easily. When can you pick up the replacement?" I actually said, "Are you serious?" I was not expecting that at all. I almost wanted to say, "Really, you don't have to do that...." But alas, a few days later, I got a brand new pair of frames that I've rocked for the past year and a half. (And the crazy thing is, I would not have held it against them AT ALL had they not offered a replacement. It's not their fault that my glasses had a date with a bar of soap. Maybe I should just be more careful with my bathroom hygiene practices?) I need to schedule a new appointment next week, and I'm looking forward to it, as always. read more

While I did not wind up purchasing my frames here (too $$$), I was very impressed with the high level of customer service. (Drat - I can't remember the name of the nice lady who helpeed me.) It's a great place - too bad I can't afford it at the moment. read more

Update: shortly after reviewing Modern Eye, I was contacted by the business owner and offered a refund for the frames. I stopped back in last week and the manager was friendly and totally cool about it, and gave me a full refund. Thanks for the great customer service, guys! read more

hands down, modern eye is the best eyeglass store i have ever been to. the selection of frames is top notch (orgreen, cliff wexxler, paul smith, oliver peoples, prodesign) and the staff is unbelievably helpful. go ahead, try on every frame in the store. you will not get any attitude. the staff will even select frames that they think will work for your face. i really trust the aesthetic of the people who work at modern eye. if they are not enthused by a selection, you might want to keep looking. and they offer their opinions in such a friendly way. not pushy at all. i purchased a pair of orgreen frames today. i worked with john and he was friendly, helpful ,and professional. i rarely wear my glasses, but i like the ones i picked out today so much, i may be rocking specs more often. read more

I have been wearing corrective lenses for 10 years now. But after years of contact wearing, my eyes hate me. I've decided to start wearing glasses more often which means I need new public-friendly frames. Modern eye seemed like a decent start. Upon entering, I was immediately put off by the small selection and all the frames in a case. I would much rather try on the frames myself and seek assistance if needed. Instead, 2 hipsters (one with questionable frames himself) decided to swoop in. Don't get me wrong, they were very nice and attentive. But being that I am not a hipster, I found their taste in frames rather dubious. I was given ridiculous frames like old-lady cat eyed frames in thick black, a bright red and metal too small frame, and a neon orange/purple frame. Eventually I found one on my own that I really liked. When I asked how much it was he joked saying $700 and then said just kidding it's only $375. Are you still kidding me?! for a pair of plastic frames from a "designer" no one's ever heard of?! Then I was told how its such great quality, most glasses are more, etc. Their cheapest frame is probably wire-rimmed for $200. I know the whole vision industry is a sham, but $400 for a frame + lens cost is too ridiculous. I guess I have to go check out the "cheap" places. read more

The actual selection of glasses here is fantastic, and they did an excellent job of tweaking my prescription, and my new glasses were ready for pick up in 3 days. However I don't want help when I am shopping until I am ready for it. I was really put off by the fact that I had to ask to see any pair of frames I wanted to try on, and I don't want an audience. I do much better selecting frames somewhere where I am free to grab anything I like to try on, to look in the mirro by myself for as long as I want, and then maybe get someone's opinion when I got it down to 2 or 3 pairs. Modern Eye also had me chose my frames AFTER dilating my eyes, so I couldn't totally see what I was trying on. The glasses I got fit my face well, but are frankly a little boring because I felt rushed, and couldn't see what I was trying on anyway. I was really pleased with Dr. Chris, but probably will not return. read more
