I never knew an optometrist could be so hip/cool/down-wid-it. All the workers look like they possibly have side jobs at M.A.C. makeup since they have that funky-fresh alternative look to them. Dr Anastasiou is really down-to-earth and down-to-business. This place claims to be "the hippest most modern eyewear in the land" and to have "an over-dedicated, very-involved, non-comission staff that won't let you leave with a pair of eyeglasses that looks bad." The Ucity Modern Eye is great. I went there roughly three years ago and got a pair of specs that I'm still wearing today. The selection is great and the staff are very helpful. I was back a week ago looking for new glasses and the same gentleman that helped me pick out a pair those years ago was working. He helped me pick out the new ones as well. Really nice guy and very helpful with his feedback. The name escapes me at the moment. The other Modern Eye location has a great selection as well, but I found it to be a little hectic and harder to try on a high volume of frames like I was able to do at the Ucity location. I took both my son and myself in to see Doc Anastasiou. I could not have been happier with the care we received. My son is 11, and was a little nervous about getting an exam. The Doc sensed this and was extra comforting. The rest of the staff was silly and fun and over all we had an excellent experience. I had to revisit Modern Eye last week to see if one of the embellishments on my frames could be replaced when I noticed it fell out. They not only replaced the frames for free (because it was within my one year warranty) but the fella behind the counter even noticed the lens was scratched and took it upon himself to have those replaced as well, so I didn't need to waste my time making another trip. I went to Modern Eye because of all of their fabulous reviews on Yelp (thanks Yelpers!) and I wasn't disappointed! Dr. Chris was great and the staff was knowledgeable and very helpful. I found super cute frames and the prescription is perfect . I've never had glasses that were fitted as well as these were, thanks to the great staff. I went in to get glasses a year ago and was surprised by how impatient the staff was. They acted like it was a huge inconvenience for my to try on more then 3 frames. After about 5 minutes of trying on frames another person starting "helping" me while the original person went to help another person. After I got my glasses I noticed that the right side lens and the rim around it tipped forward a noticeable amount. Imagine holding a lens in each hand and twisting the right one forward. That's what happened. When I brought it back and asked if it could be fixed, they acted like it wasn't completely their fault and expressed doubt about whether it could be fixed. When I asked about heating the frame up and bending it back, they said it might work, but then asked for my consent to do it in case the frame snapped. Again, they acted as if they were doing me a favor instead of what was really happening: they were fixing a defective pair of frames they sold me. Even then they didn't completely fix the problem. If you want a patient staff and a wide variety of both pretentious and non-pretentious frames go to Trend Eye Care in Northern Liberties. They fixed the glasses I got from Modern Eye in two seconds and didn't act like it was a strange or difficult request. They also patiently helped me pick out new frames. read more

Love, love, love! First of all, coolest eye doctor office I've ever been to. They are quick, efficient and this doctor really took the time to explain the options to my complicated eye needs. I visited them for the first time last year and have since moved out of Philly. When I called to refill my contact lenses, they could not have been more helpful. In fact, since I had waited too long to refill and was literally out of contacts for one eye, they quickly offered to send me a few samples to get me through until I received my delivery of the refill. I recently got in touch with her about needing an emergency pair of contacts. Kate was incredibly helpful, even allowing me to come in after regular office hours for help. On another occasion Modern Eye was able to get me a replacement pair of glasses for me even after my warranty expired. OK. So I wanted to actually wait until I got my glasses to write a review but I just can't hold off any longer. Modern Eye is ultra fab!!! I came in a little early for my appointment a few days ago so I could browse around their selection. I was impressed to say the least. Come time for my appointment I was greeted by a very tall Dr. Bryan who was uber friendly and courteous throughout the exam even though I was a bit freaked out because I was trying contacts for the first time. I'm not all that squeamish but having something sit on my eyeball all day is a bit of a mind-f to me. OK. After the exam, I was greeted by a super sweet, extra friendly Thom who very patiently brought out frame after frame while I tried them on unsure of what to settle on. All the frames seriously looked good so it was a VERY tough decision. After receiving compliments from Thom, another salesgirl (sorry, i forget her name), another salesman Dale, and a random customer in also picking out frames, I was set! And it only took a mere 3 hours!! :-) Word of advice, bring a trusted buddy with you to help shorten your visit and help make decisions because with their wide selection you'll be sure to be in there awhile! Prices are fair. I don't know what all the other comments about them being super pricey are about. Granted I have insurance so maybe that's what it is. For the exam, contact fitting/instruction, frames, and lenses with all the fixings I ended up paying around $190. I also got a free trial pack of two-week contacts and box of dailys because, as a first time contact wearer, have no idea how often I'm going to use them or if I'll even like them. Update: The two week trial pack of contacts that I got fit funny in one of my eyes. I called them up and had a replacement trial pack by the time I finally rolled out of bed to pick them up! AND Thom remembered and addressed me by name when I went in (my name is in no way easy to remember or pronounce)!! Now that's what I call customer service!!! read more

The staff have managed to make a bad impression for the place. They're standoffish and inattentive, and came across like they couldn't be bothered over four visits to the place. They also hung up the phone when I called, and made no apology when I called back. Their appointments are unreliable, and even though they knew my insurance they said they couldn't perform the visit I was scheduled for unless I paid out of pocket, and that they couldn't give any discount even though I was supposed to have the appointment through my insurance. I was also unimpressed with their selection-- it was overpriced and limited. If you want the option of something quality but classic, look elsewhere. I won't shop here again, particularly when they charge so much for sub-par service. EDIT: Upvoted one star because the manager promptly contacted me to try to clarify any misunderstandings. Still didn't love this place, but I appreciate the attention to feedback. EDIT 2: Upvoted one more star. The manager followed up again to let me know they had resolved the phone issue I experienced. Modern Eye has cornered the eyewear market in Philadelphia for fantastic customer service. They are unfailingly positive, upbeat, and will go out of their way to help you out. The store isn't huge but has a great variety of stylish options. I'm sure their prices are relatively high, but they are also very good about making sure that you maximize any eyecare insurance coverage that you are entitled to. Bravo! read more

This place is great! I was tired of the same old selection of frames at the mall stores, so I gave this shop a try. I am so glad I did!! Kathy was wonderful. She selected 4 or 5 unique frames for me and they were all spot on. She has a gift! The service was speedy and my glasses fit well and look fantastic. I have a customer facing job and not a day goes by that I don't receive at least 1 compliment on my glasses. I didn't get my eye exam there, so I can't speak on that end, but I did get my frames there. The staff was awesome and non-commissioned, which makes a big difference on your wallet. I told them I was planning on spending around 175 for frames, and instead of doing the typical talk-me-into-something-nicer, they pointed out cheaper ones that worked well, (actually pushing me toward the sale frames first) advising them over the pricier options. Actually, the frames I wanted, they didn't have in my color, except for on one of the employees' faces, so she offered to let me try them on. How nice is that for a non-commissioned sales staff? Then, since they were plastic frames, they (Bill) advised going with just a plastic lens since it would be cheaper than the upgrades, and the frames would hide any lens thickness, so it wouldn't matter. I upgraded anyway, and got lens coatings that he didnt even mention, let alone try to push on me. In the end, I spent a hundred bucks less than I would have had to at OnmiVision (where I got my inspection, also a pretty good frame selection actually, but not as cool as Modern Eye), for frames that are a little more unique and spared me any brand names emblazed across the arm. Definitely the best place if you're looking for unique frames. For me, I like to go subtle but sharp (clear plastic classic shape), but you could get anything from plain wire frames to orange ones with palm trees if you wanted. Definitely five stars. read more

Modern Eye has a relatively large and trendy collection of frames to choose from. The staff members are all young but friendly. The frames themselves are quite expensive. I found frames I really liked but when I went back they were gone, which was sad. I thought they had numerous of each frame but I guess not. I picked out a different frame and they told me that it would take about 3-4 days until my glasses were done. I called them after about 10 days and they told me that the frames were in and that it would be ready in a couple of days. Today, at day 19, I finally called them in a huff and they finally gave them to me. Fortunately I had another pair to wear but it was very frustrating to have to wait so long for the glasses without any communication from Modern Eye about what was going on. read more

My most recent experience at modern eye was the best I've ever had getting new glasses. Vanessa was patient with me and did not try to talk me into any frames to keep me moving along. She was considerate and made a recommendation of something that was not in stock. They ordered this frame for me taking the risk that I might not keep it. Well, Vanessa nailed it and I did end up keeping them. I even went back in and they helped me ordered lenses for a pair of glasses near to my heart and even helped refit them for me at no cost. I visited my sister in Chestnut Hill and wanted to get a pair of glasses at her favorite eye glass place, so we hopped on the train and went to Modern Eye. As soon as we walked in, three staff members said hello and acknowledged us....and one very friendly, competent woman helped me through the process (Laura...what a wonderful woman who really knows her stuff!) Their selection of eyewear is amazing, and a little overwhelming, so I asked Laura to help me pick out glasses. Every pair she picked out were ones that felt fantastic on my face and actually looked pretty great (I'm critical). In fact, I was so thrilled with the selection that I ended up with three pair....and had ZERO pressure to even buy one. Here is the best reason why I couldn't wait to write a review of their services...The minute I first interacted with Laura, I said that I needed the final product in 4 days, as I wanted them before returning to my home in California. She said she would do everything she could to make that happen, and was true to her word. She stayed on top of the status every day and kept me informed. I really wasn't counting on her coming through with final glasses in such a short time period, but sure enough, she had them ready for me in time! I can't wait to come back to visit, and when I do, I intend to go to this place and get another pair of beautiful, unique, stylish glasses....and give them a more reasonable time period. My experience was great at Modern Eye until I realized that the glasses I had picked were not a good fit for me so I went to change them and it happened that the ones I like were $300 cheaper than the initial ones but they do not refund you ... But I had paid cash so he ended up refunding me cash, thank you guys you rock and I will come back in 2 years for my new frame!!!!! read more

I have lived away from "home" for 15 years now, but always waited for return trips to visit my beloved family eye doctor. He is amazing. And Modern Eye was amazing enough to make me make the switch! I have now been a customer here for about 5 years, and I couldn't be happier. The docs are great, the customer service is phenomenal, and while my glasses were a little pricey 3 years later I still love them. The staff really has an eye for what looks good on you, and helps you find a frame that looks good and meets your budget. I recently had trouble with my contact lenses, and Dr. Bryan was excellent - he kept working with me to try drops, different solutions, and different lenses until I found something that worked. I couldn't recommend them more highly, and I imagine that once I leave Philly I'll once again be saving my eye appts. for return trips. read more

I'll never buy my glasses anywhere else. I was skeptical at first and bought a few pairs of crappy glasses from those shops with the 2 for $69 deals - ill never do that again. I picked a pair at Modern Eye, was quoted a price (and given a discount), and decided to go for it. Expecting a wait of a week or more, I paid, and they told me to wait. I feel compelled to write a glowing review of this eye center. Modern Eye was highly recommended by several people on yelp, google, and a host of other sites, and being that I needed to get my eyes checked, as well as a new prescription of glasses, this seemed to be the safest bet. Their eye exams are very thorough, and their doctors are extremely knowledgable. (I have been going to eye doctors for over 20 years, so I do know quite a bit) The pair of glasses I got were great, until recently they broke. I contacted them the next day, and within the same day, they ordered a new pair, no cost, and sent me home with a back up pair of glasses, only paying for the frame which was discounted. I would highly recommend Modern Eye. Their doctors are terrific, and their service is amazing. read more

Good selection, helpful staff. Frames are behind desk which precludes one from trying them on yourself. After purchase, adjustments to custom fit the frame were not thorough -- this is relative to my experiences in the past in multiple other cities where I lived. When I first went in it was for an adjustment for glasses I bought out of state -- but they helped me without a charge and were incredibly friendly. Then, having to buy frames a couple of years later, I looked into a sea of frames with no idea how to choose a pair that would look good on me. The sales guy pulled out three frames almost immediately and they all looked great on me. So, I always go there for my frames, and I love the people who work there. Although I thought spending a couple hundred dollars on frames was a lot, they have lasted for years, and so they've been a very good value looks-wise and money-wise. read more

I've just come home from my second experience at Modern Eye and it was so terrific that I felt compelled to write a review. My first experience was similar to many others... great glasses, lots of help making the selection and terrific, friendly service. But this most recent experience takes the cake... This time I was there with my teen daughter who wanted to get contacts for the first time. She got glasses from Modern Eye at the same time I did so I decided they'd be a good option for the contacts as well. She had an eye exam with Bryan (Brian?) who was terrific with her! Explained every little detail as he went along with no hurry or rush. He took lots of time to be sure the prescription was just right... much more than our usual eye doc. But one of the nicest things was that he talked to her... not to us... really treating her like an adult. He was just terrific. They spent plenty of time with her, showing her how to put the lenses in and take them out herself, and how to clean and care for them. All in all it was just a great experience. Price for exam, fitting and trial lenses was $102 which I thought was very reasonable. They will also file our insurance paperwork for us. Most of their frames are pricey, but they also carry more moderate frames and do sometimes have sales. Next time I need my exam, I'm going there instead of our usual doc! read more

I took in a pair of sunglasses to have nosepads put in or the frames tightened. The fellow who helped me--I believe his name was Tom--assured me right away that tightening the frames was a far better option, both for aesthetics and cost, and he set to work. While he was working on the frames, he pointed out to me that the lenses were bowing out slightly, and promised to get them fully back into the frames. In the process of getting them back into the frames, unfortunately, one of the lenses cracked. He was immediately very contrite and went straight into the storeroom to look for matching lenses. They had matching lenses in stock, so he promised to replace the lenses that afternoon. The sunglasses were fixed within half an hour. Tom had me try them on again and made a few additional adjustments to the fit--and then didn't charge me. I hadn't expected him to charge me for the lenses, but he didn't charge me for the significant time and effort he'd expended on the fit, either. As ever, the staff at Modern Eye is attentive, helpful, and incredibly thoughtful. I look forward to paying them next time, as this is a business well worth supporting. read more

This is such a great place to get glasses. I have been going there for years and every time I end up with the coolest glasses. We always start with what I think I want and by way of fun and lots of testing different rims, I end up getting a fun and different pair of glasses. I now view glasses as an accessory and have started a collection with a few pairs for different moods. The sales people are awesome and fun and very competent.
